Now you already have a few must-see spots for your visit to Mijas Pueblo, but there’s more. “I recommend visiting the Virgen de la Peña (in the hermitage), the parish church of La Inmaculada, La Muralla, where we also have

Just a few metres further on, we meet another local, Javier Martín, who sends us back to La Muralla, “an idyllic place with lovely views, the parish church, the bullring and the remains of the old wall, all great places to visit. There’s even a tower from which you can see the whole town”.

On Friday 8th, La Cala de Mijas once again became a shining example of multiculturalism and integration. The Southern Andalusia Folklore Association organised the IX La Cala de Mijas International Folklore Festival. An event that aims not only to showcase and promote our own culture, but also to bring dances from around the world to the stage. “This festival was born in 1989. I founded it with the group I had created in 1974 when I was just a girl. Due to circumstances, there was a hiatus, but a few years ago, with the help of the Town Hall, we resumed it and have now been running it for nine years. Here we are, and we hope it will continue for many more years”, said the president of the Southern Andalusia Folklore Association, Rafi Cuevas
After the parade, the councillor for Culture in Mijas, Juan Carlos Maldonado (PMP), took to the stage to welcome the groups and the audience. “This is now a well-established festival and Mijas is proud to host folklore from different parts of the world in La Cala. This also reflects the spirit of Mijas, which is open to the world, and La Cala is a perfect example of peaceful coexistence. We will continue to work from the Department of Culture because, at the end of the day, that is what culture is all about: integration and values”, he said. In addition to Andalusian folklore, there were dances from Peru, Bolivia and Nepal, with the latter group travelling to Mijas exclusively to take part in the festival.

The Mijas Local Police evicted three homes that had been illegally occupied in different areas of the municipality in just 72 hours. The interventions, which took place in El Faro, Miraflores and Las Lagunas, were made possible thanks to citizen collaboration and increased surveillance in areas particularly affected by this type of crime.
“We acted immediately on the reports we received and managed to recover these three homes without the use of force, thanks to the professional intervention of our officers”, explained the deputy mayor and councillor for Security, Juan Carlos Cuevas Dawson (Vox).
In all cases, the occupants left the properties voluntarily af-
ter the Local Police intervened, ensuring the safety of residents and those involved at all times. The legitimate owners were informed of their right to file a complaint. Cuevas stressed that “our Local Police are fully prepared to handle these situations

I.M. Following Blues Night, on Saturday 9th, the Department of Tourism opted for a new musical style to enliven the tonw’s summer evenings. On this occasion, it was folk music that drew a large audience of fans to the Miguel González Berral Municipal Auditorium.
“Folk Night shows that Mijas is capable of attracting international artists and offering first-class shows in a privileged setting. In addition, we have added a charitable component that has been very well received by the public”, said the councillor for Tourism, Francisco Jerez (Vox). “These are the performances we have today on a fantastic night, and for both the people of Mijas and visitors alike, it is lively and excellent”, said the councillor of the Mijas Town Hall, Mari Francis Alarcón (PP).
The first to take the stage were the members of the duo Jones & Kid, composed of the talented guitarist Kid Carlos and the voice of Txako Jones. They opened the festival with a tour through classic American and Spanish folk songs from several generations.
However, the star of the night was Asturian musician Hevia, inventor of the electronic bagpipe and the world’s best-selling bagpiper, with three million albums sold. The musician, accompanied by his
band and the Banda de Gaitas Xándalu, made up of musicians from across Andalusia and conducted by Carina Linares, brought some of the melodies from his homeland, Asturias, to Mijas, blending them with tribal rhythms. The artist publicly thanked “Mijas, the organisers, our band and technicians, and the Xándalu Bagpipe Band for accompanying us on the ‘Busindre Reel’. It has been a very special night”.
The event also had a charitable element, although admission was free, attendees were invited to donate non-perishable food and personal hygiene products to Cárita. In addition to the concert, the auditorium hosted a bar run by the Archicofradía del Dulce Nombre de Jesús Nazareno, which served food and drinks.
