The Beaches Department of the Mijas Town Hall has given a positive assessment of the recent improvement and refurbishment work carried out at various points along the Mijas coastline. As a result, “the municipal beaches are now in perfect condition”, said the councillor for the area, Daniel Gómez Teruel (PP).
“We have an enviable coastline: kilometres of beaches perfectly equipped for the enjoyment of both residents and visitors. This is possible thanks to the tireless work of municipal staff, who strive to keep everything in perfect condition not only during the summer, but all year round”, explained the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP).
Among the tasks completed, “the areas equipped for people with reduced mobility have been painted and cordoned off, making the beaches, car parks, and bicycle parking areas even more
accessible”, highlighted Gómez Teruel.
All this work is part of the necessary process for Mijas to renew its Blue Flags and Q for Quality certificates this September. “By continuing along these lines”, said the councillor, “we will achieve these certifications, just as we did last year when we regained the Blue Flag for the Riviera Beach”.
The councillor also thanked all those involved in the maintenance and improvement of the municipality’s beaches, “because thanks to the work carried out by the municipal staff, the beach manager, the environmental and beach technicians, and also the Basic Income workers, we have idyllic beaches”, he said.
According to the councillor, “you only have to step outside the municipality and see what other towns have to offer to appreciate what we’ve achieved here. It makes us feel very proud of our coastline, of the work we do and

Regarding the uniqueness of the Mijas coastline, Teruel recalled that “we have two Posidonia meadows, the Laja del Almirante, an area rich in flora and fauna as well as marine species, and, of course, the crown jewel, which has been highly praised, El Peñón del Cura beach. It’s true that being featured in such prestigious magazines and receiving worldwide publicity for Mijas’ beaches shows that the work is being done quite well”.

A small cove that combines nature, tranquility, and stunning views
P.M. Snorkelling on the Malaga coast offers a direct way to explore the underwater world. One of the most popular spots is El Peñón del Cura, a small, secluded beach full of charm, which is featured in the local press this week. With just a pair of goggles and a snorkel, and when sea conditions allow, you can discover schools of fish, crabs and mussels clinging to the rocks and even posidonia meadows. This spot provides direct contact with nature and is an ideal environment for those seeking tranquillity, clear waters, and picturepostcard landscapes. he beach lies right at the base of a steep cliff, very close to the A-7 motorway. Despite its proximity to the road, it maintains a very relaxed atmosphere.

Mijas records the lowest unemployment rate in the last 17 years
Editorial Department /J.P.
Last July, Mijas recorded a total of 5,369 unemployed people, representing a year-on-year decrease of 2.59%. These figures are encouraging, as they mark the lowest number recorded since December 2008. Furthermore, they reflect a decrease of 134 people compared to the same month last year.
With regard to Social Security affiliation figures for May, the most recent month for which data is available, Mijas registered a total of 28,261 people with Social Security, representing an

increase of 194 more than the previous month.
For the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), “these figures show that jobs are being created in Mijas, so from the Town Hall we will continue to promote policies to encourage employment so that the people of Mijas can access the labour market”. For his part, the councillor for Economic
Development and Employment Promotion, Juan Carlos Maldonado (PMP), also commented on the July unemployment data on Tuesday 5th. “The truth is that the figures are encouraging. Above all, we must thank the business community, the self-employed and entrepreneurs, because they are the true driving force behind job creation”.

Maldonado pointed out that, among other factors, programmes such as Nexo and the job fairs promoted by the Town Hall have contributed to these positive results: “They have helped ensure that this public-private partnership can connect our job seekers with the labour market”, adding that “without a doubt, these public-private initiatives by the Town Hall through the Nexo programme have also helped to revitalise the labour market”.
According to the Argos Observatory of the Junta de Andalucía, the councillor emphasised, Mijas leads Andalusia in terms of selfemployment (29.9%): “We are the leading municipality in Andalusia for the creation of self-employment, which is not only significant in terms of Social Security registration but also for the entrepre-

He also highlighted the training programmes promoted by the Mijas Town Hall to boost employability. “Through the quality system we’re implementing in the Town Hall’s Employment Promotion Department, we’re identifying new areas for job creation, with priority given to training initiatives backed by the Junta de Andalucía”, explained Maldonado, citing roles such as qualified staff for hospitality, home care, maintenance services and gardening. He concluded by saying that “we will finally achieve our goal of continuing to add people to the labour market, ensuring that the year-onyear employment rate continues to rise and that the unemployment rate remains negligible in our municipality”.

APPLICATIONS ARE NOW OPEN
for subscriber spaces at Los Santos car park
On Tuesday, 5th of August, the Mijas Town Hall reminded residents that the application period is still open for one of the 176 subscriber parking spaces available at the new municipal car park currently under construction in the Los Santos neighbourhood of Las Lagunas. This was announced by the councillor for Facilities Management, Juan José Torres Trella (PP):
“We estimate that this car park will open at the end of October and, prior to this, an application period has been opened so that local residents can register as subscribers”. The councillor also explained that “if demand exceeds supply, a public draw will be held”.
To be eligible for one of the 176 parking spaces in the future Los Santos car park made available to residents by the Mijas Town Hall, you must be a resident of legal age, own a light vehicle registered in the town, with up-to-date road tax (IVTM) and valid insurance. “The subscription price is 50 euros per month,

OPENING SOON LATE OCTOBER
“We estimate that the opening of this car park wi take place at the end of October. Pri to this opening, a registration period has been opened to aow local users to sign up as subscribers”
which amounts to an annual fee of 600 euros”, said Torres Trella.
Priority for the allocation of these spaces will be given to residents registered within the area of influence defined by this department.
The application period will remain open until the 15th of October. Applications can be submitted in person at the Las Lagunas Branch Office or via the electronic office.
Rotating parking spaces Torres Trella also pointed out that, of the total 234 spaces available in the Los Santos public car park, 58 will be designated for short stay-use by the general public. “As this is a municipal car park, it follows the same pricing as the others: the first hour is free and it costs one euro in total for up to nine hours”.
The Town Hall improves the sewerage and drainage networks in several streets in Las Lagunas
at any time. The councillor for Infrastructures and Works at the Mijas Town Hall, Juan José Torres Trella (PP), explained that “a shaft is dug on one side of the motorway to insert the tunnel boring machine that passes the pipes through. On the other side of the motorway, near the La Palma bar, another shaft is dug, where the sewerage and rainwater pipes will be connected to the existing network”.
The purpose of the project is to install two pipes for the drainage of sewage and rainwater, with diameters of 1000 and 800 milli-
metres respectively, connecting them downstream to the existing framework and urban networks currently in service. This area required intervention due to several existing problems. As Torres Trella explains, “in this area we have a problem with rainwater accumulation, and because the sewage and rainwater systems are combined, we also face health concerns. This new construction involves, firstly, the separation of the sewage and rainwater systems, and secondly, the connection to the existing sewage network.
234 PARKING SPACES
Eventually, it will be linked to the so-called storm tank”.
The work was scheduled to take three months, but it had to be halted during August. “We encountered compact, hard rock during excavation, which means the work will be paused until September. After that, a manual construction method will be used to remove the rock, adding approximately
three more months to the project timeline. The cost will not change; it remains approximately 1.090.000 euros”, added the councillor. The project also includes the renovation of the upper part of the square on Calle Verónica, as well as works on the other side of the motorway near the La Palma bar, and on San Bartolomé and San Bernardo streets.

Almost a thousand people enjoyed July activities at
TERRITORIO JUVENTUD
In its first month, up to 825 people enjoyed the activities offered at El Torreón Beach
A.L. There is still a whole month left to enjoy the summer with activities such as kayaking and paddle surfing on El Torreón beach in La Cala, through the Territorio Juventud programme, promoted by the Youth Department. In July, its first month running, 825 people took part in these activities. This was announced by the councillor for the area, Melisa Ceballos (PP), who highlighted the great reception this initiative has received. “July has been quite intense, with high of participation on both Fridays and Saturdays, and we hope August will be just the same”, said Ceballos.
Each day is divided into six 30-minute sessions between 17 and 20 hours, with a capacity for 200 participants per day split into different groups. Kayaking and paddle surfing are the main activities offered, although if sea conditions are unfavourable, an alternative plan is activated, featuring games on the sand “such as Jenga or beach paddle”, said one of the instructors, Ismael Luque, from Exploramás, the company coordinating the programme.
Territorio Juventud also has a stand offering lemonade, fruit and energy bars. Registration opens
every Wednesday at 10 hours via the website www.experiencias. es and is open to young people and children aged 8 and over, as well as entire families. Once registration opens, simply sign up and enjoy.
The department highlighted the value of this type of activity in promoting healthy habits and sports. “This initiative offers a different way to enjoy the summer, providing sports activities for young people and families all in one place, while enjoying the sun and the beach”, concluded Ceballos.
Ed. Dept. The CCOO, UGT and CSIF trade unions returned to demonstrate on Wednesday 6th outside the Town Hall to demand ‘fair stabilisation and compliance with the court rulings’ that have been issued. Additionally, workers from the Home Care Service (SAD) also gathered to protest against delays in the payment of their wages and have begun an indefinite strike. The Executive stated that the stabilisation plan proposed by the previous government team received unfavourable reports and was therefore modified. Regarding the SAD employees, it confirmed that the latest invoices approved at plenary session have been paid to the concessionaire and that the service has now been awarded to a new company.

The sun safety campaign
comes to an end

There’s no excuse for leaving the house without sun protection. With this message in mind, the Youth Department of the Mijas Town Hall launched a summer
awareness campaign entitled ‘Mójate con tu piel’ (‘Dive in with your skin’). The initiative, which concluded on the 6th, aimed to raise public awareness about the effects of sun exposure on the skin. It was held at the AquaMijas
The Youth Department successfully concludes the youth campaign on sun protection, ‘Mójate con tu piel’, held at AquaMijas
water park, in collaboration with experts in the field and the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC).
“Young people have been very engaged and are walking away with an important lesson”, said the councillor for the area, Melisa Ceballos (PP), who attended the closing session. The young people taking part in the campaign, aged between 14 and 35 and who had signed up in advance, attended an informative talk on sun protection and also took part in a series of activities. They then enjoyed a full day at AquaMijas.
“Our main advice is to never lose sight of the fact that the sun is always there, that ultraviolet radiation causes skin cancer and that the best way to protect ourselves is to know that we have to use sunscreen all year round, as a routine, and not just during the summer, although we should use more in summer. Protect children and the elderly in particular, and bear in mind that if we use sunscreen all year round, it will be easier to get used to it in summer because it will be part of our daily routine”, insisted the head of Prevention and Health Promotion at the AECC, Elena Ybarra

Initially, Youth had planned two rounds of the campaign, “but we had to extend it to a third due to its great success”, said the councillor Melisa Ceballos. “Thanks to the campaign, we have even gained two new members for the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC), and it’s wonderful to see how young people are getting involved in the cause”, added Ceballos.

In fact, scientific data points to a 40 per cent increase in the incidence of skin cancer in the last five years. “Our families weren’t aware and didn’t put sunscreen on us, which is why it’s important to protect yourself”, added pharmacist Aixa Galán from the Mare Nostrum pharmacy in La Cala de Mijas.
When it comes to skin protection, experts point out that many myths still circulate today that need to be debunked. Another fact to bear in mind: “Twentyfive per cent of solar radiation is received during childhood and is closely linked to future cases of melanoma”, Galán pointed out.
