Proclamation and unveiling of the poster for the La Cala Fair 2025

There’s not long to go before the La Cala de Mijas Fair begins, which this year will run from the 22nd to the 27th of July. One of the most eagerly awaited events of the summer, the fair now has both a poster and a full programme. On Friday 11th, in the Plaza del Torreón, locals and visitors gathered to hear the proclamation, that officially marked the start of the festivities, delivered this year by neighbour Paco Lozano, who shared some heartfelt words about his beloved hometown, his “favourite place in the world”.
The event began with performances by the UP groups led by Víctor Rojas, who gave their all on stage in what marked the almost official start of the La Cala festivities.
Following the dancing, last year’s town crier, Loli Arroyo, introduced Lozano, “who belongs to one of the most well-known families in the coastal village. In fact, there is

no event in La Cala where someone from the Lozano family is not helping out, representing the town, or simply enjoying themselves”.
This was echoed by Lozano during his speech, which was full of memories and heartfelt words for La Cala. “Let’s not forget that this town has not only been a fishing village, it was also a farming community, with its low houses and dirt roads, where we all knew each other by name and a single look was enough to tell if someone needed something”. The town crier also recalled “the voices calling from door to door, games on the beach, and the first fireworks that marked the start of the summer fair, when simple things meant everything”.

“From the library we also collaborated with the Festivities Committee, organising our poetry competition, which drew a large number of participants”, recalled Lozano.
The town crier also looked back on other important events linked to the La Cala Fair, such as the sports competitions, in which he has also been involved over the years. He praised the way the fair has grown, becoming one of the
key summer events on the Costa del Sol: “It’s now full of life, colour, different accents and joined hands.
Where once there were just a few paths, there are now thousands of stories crossing”.
The proclamation was warmly applauded by everyone in attendance, including the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), who began her speech by congratulating “this town crier who, without a doubt, has helped us remember, and also learn about, many of the traditions
that, thanks to people like him, have kept the spirit of La Cala alive”.
The councillor for Festivities, Silvia Marín (PP), also dedicated a few words to the town crier:
“The Lozano family represents so much in La Cala. His speech felt too short, as he shared so many stories and experiences that his whole family has lived through.
Congratulations to Paco Lozano for this beautiful proclamation and for sharing these memories with us all in such a special way.”
Singer Erika Leiva brought the evening to a close, in front of a large audience that included residents, friends and family of the crier, representatives from the various political groups, and, of course, tourists visiting La Cala. “The La Cala Fair is one of Mijas’ unmissable summer events. We work tirelessly to ensure there is something for everyone, thanks to the dedication of our municipal staff”, the mayoress concluded.

Natura
2000 reaches Calahonda beach
P.M. On Friday 11th, a Natura 2000 Network workshop was held in Calahonda — the first time such an event has taken place in Mijas. This educational activity aimed to raise public awareness about the importance of these protected areas and their vital role in conserving European biodiversity.
The Natura 2000 Network is a European ecological network of protected areas designated for biodiversity conservation. Calahonda is one of these areas, thanks to its seagrass meadows, a threatened species that we are fortunate to have in Mijas.

New awareness event within the ‘Mares Vivos’ campaign
The aim of the event is to raise awareness and protect submerged forests. It will take place on the afternoon of July 19th on the Torreón Beach in Mijas
Cristina Luque / Beatriz Martín
On the 19th of July, a new awareness event will take place to promote the dissemination, protection, and conservation of submerged forests. ‘Mares Vivos’ (Living Seas) is the name of the campaign run by the Mijas Town Hall in collaboration with the Aula del Mar Mediterráneo Foundation, and it will be held on Torreón Beach in La Cala.
According to the councillor for Beaches, Daniel Gómez Teruel (PP), “we will be joined by residents who have dedicated their entire lives to the sea. It is also important to highlight the activity of cleaning the sea surface by kayak. As the Spanish saying goes, being clean doesn’t come from cleaning more, but from getting dirty less, and we have to understand that the sea is something we all must care for and, thanks to campaigns like this, we are getting closer every day to having the coastline and the sea we all want”.
For this reason, ‘Mares Vivos’ returns with a new awareness day dedicated to the protection of submerged forests. Here in Mijas, the Posidonia meadow off El Chaparral beach is one of the main examples.
Following an in-situ study carried out by professional divers from the Aula del Mar Mediterráneo Foundation, an open day for the general public has now been organised. The aim is to raise awareness of the marine biodiversity in order to encourage its protection. The day will feature various activities such as a submerged forest laboratory, marine workshops, storytelling sessions, and fun activities for children. According to the president of the Aula del Mar Mediterráneo Foundation, Juan Antonio López, “the workshops will be very dynamic and engaging. We will have a laboratory where participants can learn about the unique features of endangered species. There will
In June, the ‘Mancomunidad’ removed five cubic metres of waste from the waters of Mijas
This action is part of the Water Quality Plan, which is carried out by the joint authority throughout the summer seasons
J.P. The Water Quality Plan, once again launched this year by the Association of Municipalities of the Western Costa del Sol (Mancomunidad de Municipios de la Costa del Sol Occidental), has begun to release its initial figures on water quality and marine waste collection.
As in previous years, plastics remain the main item collected in the waters of the Costa del Sol. However, the amount recorded du-
ring June was slightly lower than in the same period in 2024, as was the case with fatty residues and algae. The quantities of organic matter and other waste remained virtually unchanged. There was, however, an increase in the collection of wood and reeds. Smaller amounts of polystyrene boxes, fishing gear, and beach equipment (such as chairs and umbrellas) were also retrieved.
In Mijas, 5.07 cubic metres of waste were removed in June, making it the third municipality on the Western Costa del Sol with the highest volume of waste collected, behind Estepona. The maintenance boats operate along the coastline of Torremolinos, Benalmádena, Fuengirola, Mijas, Marbella, Estepona, Casares and Manilva.
In total, 15 vessels, four coastal and 11 for beach areas, are tasked

In addition, Ariba Málaga is organising a seedling-watering event on Sunday 20th, starting at 8 in the morning, at the most recent reforestation site in Sierra Alpujata, Entrerríos, next to the Infoca water reservoir. The event is open to the general public. For more information, please call 670 066 122.
N.L. Swifts are extremely important for agriculture, human health, and maintaining healthy biodiversity. Seeing them in our skies is a sign of a well-functioning ecosystem. In Mijas, the Environment Department has organised a talk and workshop on this subject, to be delivered by Silvia Montero, a veterinarian and collaborator with the SOS Vencejo Association. The talk will take place on Tuesday 22nd at 19.30 hours at the la Cala Branch Office, with free admission until full capacity is reached. Xeriscaping work has recently been completed at the Riviera-Calahonda roundabout, next to the AP-7 motorway
Although the severe drought is now over, the Town Hall continues its efforts to save water. This year, the push buttons on the beach showers and footbaths operate for 15 seconds as a control measure, while public spaces have been modified to avoid the need for continuous watering, using sustainable materials.
In this regard, the Parks and Gardens Department, headed by the councillor Daniel Gómez Teruel (PP), has spent the past two weeks working on the roundabout at the Riviera del Sol and Calahonda residential areaas, next to the AP-7 motorway, where xeriscaping has been carried out to beautify this entrance to the municipality. “We have been working on this roundabout for two weeks, which had not been attended to for some time, and it now looks very attractive. The neighbours are very grateful for this work”, said the councillor, who stressed the Town Hall’s commitment to gardens cultivated with highly ornamental, low-water plants.
“A design based on stones, peb-
bles and glass has been chosen, along with drought-tolerant plants such as oleanders, dwarf palms, agave and olive trees, the latter being the most distinctive tree we have in Andalusia”, explained Gómez Teruel.
The councillor highlighted the work carried out by his department, “led by Joaquín, one of our gardeners on staff. We are fortunate to

Regarding the Town Hall’s investment in xeriscaping, the councillor assured that “it is much lower than previous expenditures on plants, as many materials used are recycled, such as glass for decoration, or inexpensive, such as white pebbles and gravel, as well as pine bark and volcanic rock, which are generally far cheaper
than ground cover plants”.
In recent months, similar work has been carried out at various points across the municipality, including the roundabout leading to Calahonda. Other interventions have taken place on the roundabouts on the road up to Mijas Pueblo, on Calle Miguel Hernández, the entrance to La Cala from Marbella, Lagarejo, alongside Pueblo Don Silverio, in the area known as Puerto de Mijas, at the fountains near the Teatro de Las Lagunas and in Plaza Virgen de la Peña.

Mijas is a town for entrepreneurs and professional growth. This was confirmed on Wednesday 16th by the mayoress, Ana Mata (PP), who visited Fran Ortiz’s new establishment in the heart of Mijas Pueblo, Corte de Autor, his second business in the municipality after establishing himself at his premises in Las Lagunas. The mayoress highlighted the courage of self-employed entrepreneurs, recalling that Mijas is among the towns in Andalusia that has experienced the highest growth in selfemployment. “We must value the self-employed, those who get up every day hoping for a good day, who look forward to welcoming customers and who risk their assets to make things work”, she said.
Mijas, forefront of Andalusia According to Social Security affiliation data for June, among the municipalities with more than 10,000 affiliations, Mijas tops the list with the highest percentage of self-employed people, reaching 29.9 per cent of the total number of affiliations. Entrepreneurs, insisted the mayoress, must be recognised: “I always say that we have to support our local businesses by visiting their shops, buying local products, and in this case, trying quality local products such as those offered by Corte de Autor”, said Mata.
Regarding the difficulties faced by any self-employed person, Fran Ortiz stated that “there are problems every day and we have to put out fires frequently, but it is important to have a positive attitude and always try to get up with enthusiasm. In the end, everything works out”.

The shop is run by members María José Rueda and Trinidad Lebrón, but it will be the volunteers, “the most important people in the organisation”, according to the association’s president, Paqui Lebrón, who will take charge of the day-today running of the establishment, working in rotating shifts.
Among the items on sale are men’s and women’s clothing, household goods, and handmade crafts created by the users of AFA’s centre in Fuengirola. According to Lebrón, the proceeds from the sale of these items
“will go towards maintaining activities and computer equipment, as well as supporting the development of the vegetable garden outside our Adolfo Suárez Day Centre, so that we
collect essential items each day.
The councillor for Volunteering at the Mijas Town Hall, Mari Francis Alarcón (PP), was present at the event and praised the initiative, noting that “all three associations are doing valuable work: Soroptimist with their donation, and the Red Cross and Nueva Cultura del Desarrollo by ensuring it reaches those most in need in the municipality”.
For her part, the president of the Nueva Cultura del Desarrollo Tzoani Association, Tamara Soto, expressed her gratitude: “We are very grateful, as this is not the first time the association has made donations to us. They support us two or three times a year and are always there for us, even at Christmas, when we collect gifts for the children”.
can offer users activities such as garden therapy”. The shop is open in the mornings and afternoons. The establishment located in Fuengirola on Calle Palangreros / AFA Fuengirola-Mijas Costa
FOREIGNERS
Coworking for businesswomen and female entrepreneurs
Around ten women meet every Wednesday at Play restaurant to network and build connections
P. Murillo. The aim of the initiative is to bring together women from different backgrounds at Play restaurant, located in Playa Marina, to create synergies and share ideas. The restaurant’s event organiser, Georgina Fasciani, commented that “they are all businesswomen, entrepreneurs, who come here to work from 9:30 to 14 hours, always with a project underway. The idea is to complete one project by the following week and always start a new one”. Since the beginning of the summer, around ten women have been meeting every Wednesday in this space. As leadership coach Susanne Drews told us, “here you can work outside the home; I love that we are
SOLIDARITY
connected with people working in different sectors and that we take breaks, chat and connect; I’ve found that working here is much more productive than working at home”.
The municipality’s Foreigners Department collaborates with the initiative. The coordinator, Katja Thirion, said that “our involvement consists of promoting the event, as there aren’t many offers like this on the coast, especially during the summer; that’s why we thought it was an innovative project, because it’s offered during the holiday months”.
The initiative is open to anyone interested. All you have to do is contact Costa Women organisation or Play restaurant.
The Lions Club celebrates summer with a barbecue
Ed. Dept. On Saturday 12th of July, the La Cala Lions Club gathered at Club La Naranja in Calahonda to celebrate summer with a charity barbecue. During the event, a raffle was held and there was live music. In addition,
members of the club presented a donation of 2,000 euros to the association Afesol. Thanks to this dinner, the organisation also raised a further 1,300 euros, which will help them continue offering support to those most in need.
