UNEMPLOYMENT RATE SINCE 2008 figures
The municipality ended the month of June with a total of 5,322 unemployed people, the best figure in 17 years
Report by Editorial Department and Carmen Martín // Info: Patricia Murillo
Last June, Mijas recorded 5,322 unemployed people, which translates into a year-on-year decrease of 12.05%. These figures, according to the government team, are good news, as they are the lowest in the last 17 years. One would have to go back to November 2008 to find similar data. In addition, these figures represent a decrease of 347 people compared to the same month last year and 142 fewer than in May 2025.
For the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), “the figures are excellent news for Mijas and its residents and an incentive to continue working for the well-being of our neighbours. There is no doubt that having a job is synonymous with prosperity, which is why the Town Hall will continue to promote policies to encourage employment”.
Registration data
With regard to registration data for May, the latest month for which statistics are available, Mijas registered a total of 27,967 people affiliated in Social Security, which represents an increase of 1,173 registrations compared to the same
month last year and 481 more than in April 2025.
Data provided by the Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration show that the number of employees under the general scheme stands at 18,852, while the number of self-employed people is 8,793.

The Town Hall and the Community of Municipalities are launching a progressive plan to modernise the collection of this waste
Beatriz Martín
Mijas has launched an ambitious plan to progressively renew a total of 1,500 recycling containers for paper and light packaging by next April. This measure, driven by the ‘Mancomunidad de Municipios de la Costa del Sol Occidental’ (Association of Municipalities of the Western Costa del Sol) in collaboration with the Town Hall, will entail a comprehensive modernisation of the selective collection system, aiming to facilitate separation at source, improve service efficiency and strengthen the municipality’s commitment to environmental care. The mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), expressed her gratitude to the Association for its direct involvement in this project and stressed that “the containers are being renewed and modernised as part of a firm commitment to the environment and compliance with current regulations”. She explained that “an initial batch has already arrived” and that the municipality will receive “around 1,500, for the collection
The renewal of up to containers begins 1,500 recycling
of light packaging and paper”.
She also highlighted the awareness-raising work carried out by the Cleanliness Department and pointed out that “although we are already above the national average in recycling, we must continue to surpass our targets”.
The president of the Association of Municipalities of the Western Costa del Sol, Manuel Cardeña, pointed out that “with 26% for light packaging compared to 21% nationally and 22% for paper/cardboard, Mijas exceeds both the national and Andalusian averages and, given its commitment and pace of work, I
would not be surprised if it soon becomes one of the municipalities that recycles the most in Spain”.
The councillor for Street Cleaning, Eloy Belmonte (Vox), detailed the improvements of the new model: “We are going to move from rear-loading containers to a faster, safer and more efficient sideloading system. Many residents may think there are fewer containers, but in reality each one has a larger capacity, so the service will be more orderly and efficient”. Belmonte also reminded that this advance is accompanied by ongoing awareness campaigns.
SOLIDARITY
Soroptimist International stands in solidarity with those affected by DANA in Valencia
The group is seeking support to enable a resident of Paiporta to reopen her academy
C.B. Last October, flooding caused by the DANA storm left a trail of destruction across the province of Valencia. Among those affected, were people who not only lost their homes but also their livelihoods, including Carol, a resident of the municipality of Paiporta who ran a ceramics academy.
To support the community, Soroptimist International Costa del Sol, along with other Soroptimist clubs in Spain, launched an initia-
tive called ‘Soroptimist a tu Lado’ (Soroptimist by your side). The group has already secured part of the funding needed for Carol to reopen her business, but she still needs additional help to purchase a kiln. They are therefore asking for donations to raise the remaining funds and help her make her dream a reality. If you would like to contribute, donations can be made via Bizum 10787.
