The Town Hall invites bars and shops to join this campaign against harassment of women

The Mijas Town Hall is launching its second annual campaign against harassment of women, called ‘Pregunta por Angela’ (‘Ask for Angela’). This safety initiative originated in the United Kingdom and is used in bars and other venues, mainly nightclubs, to help people who feel harassed or in danger. ‘Ask for Angela!’ is the key phrase of this campaign. In Mijas, it was initiated by the Viogenex Group (Gender Violence against Foreign Women) and has had an international impact.

The mayoress of the town and head of the Family and Equal Opportunities Department, Ana Mata (PP), visited one of the establishments, Biddy Mulligan’s, on Thursday 26th with representatives of this group to thank them for their involvement. According to Mata, “this is a campaign that will be extended to all establishments that wish to join in. At present, there are already about 50 participating, and we want it to reach all three centres: La Cala, Mijas Pueblo and Las Lagunas. The aim is that any woman in Mijas can ask for help or assistance simply by asking for Angela”. The mayoress also explained that “the Mijas Town Hall takes a cross-cutting approach to tackling gender-based violence. The Department for Foreigners is also showing particular sensitivity by involving all the associations in our municipality and helping to raise awareness of issues of concern”.

The Mayor’s Office has sent letters to hotels, restaurants and shops inviting them to participate in this campaign, which also has the support of the Local Police and Civil Guard, and other

Women who find themselves in compromising or threatening situations can approach staff at these participating venues, who will act discreetly to avoid any risks. On Thursday 26th, the campaign was presented at one of the participating bars, which are placing posters in the toilets so that only women are aware of the initiative. David Reilly, manager of the Irish pub Biddy Mulligan’s, said: “It is very important that women know they can ask bar staff for help if they need it. The signs are in the toilets. If they feel intimidated or need assistance, they can go to the bar and ask for Angela”.

The mayoress also highlighted the work carried out by the Viogenex working group, which focuses its efforts on combating gender-based violence among foreign women. “I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the groups that make up this working group, which, together with the Departments for Foreigners, Family, Equal Opportunities and Social Inclusion, as well as the Local Police and Civil Guard, meet regularly to monitor cases of violence in our municipality and propose actions”. ‘MIJAS CON + ORGULLO’

celebrates diversity this Friday

At 11:00 hours, the institutional manifesto for LGBT+ Pride Day will be read at the diversity mural

June 28th marks International LGBT+ Pride Day, also known as Pride Day, a celebration that brings the world together in support of freedom and diversity, encouraging people to be themselves and reject any prejudice based on their sexual identity. Mijas is once again joining in this celebration and this Friday, 27th of June, under the slogan ‘Mijas con + orgullo’ (Mijas with + pride), will raise awareness by reading the institutional manifesto at the diversity mural, located in Mijas Pueblo next to the Town Hall, at 11:00 hours. The event is organised by the Department of Family and Equal Opportunities of the Mijas Town Hall and the Red de Municipios Orgullosos (Network of Proud Towns). The mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), explained that “in Mijas we reaffirm our commitment to equality and diversity, because we all have the freedom to love and discrimination has no place in a fair society such as ours. Of course, we remember the historic struggle of all the individuals and groups who have worked and continue to work for true equality”.

This struggle remains ongoing, as highlighted by the president of

the LGBT association Colega Torremolinos, Santiago Rubio, who said that “there is more diversity now than in the past, but there are still certain patterns that lead us to believe there will always be a need to continue fighting for the rights we have already achieved to be respected”. He also explained that “most of us are more engaged in making this a reality, and adults are increasingly educated about diversity and the acceptance of different identities, which coexist perfectly well. However, more education is still needed for younger generations, we must explain things more clearly and remember the is changing”.

Mijas trains its tourism sector in artificial intelligence

The Town Hall and the Provincial Council join forces to provide local professionals with digital tools

P.M. /F.M.R.. The real qualitative leap forward for a tourist destination, beyond sun and sand, begins with the knowledge and innovation of those who promote it every day. With this in mind, the Mijas Town Hall and the Malaga Provincial Council strengthened their commitment to cutting-edge tourism with the launch, on Friday 20th of June, of the course ‘Artificial intelligence (AI) applied to the tourism sector’.

The event, held at the Las Lagunas Training and Employment Building, was very well received and brought together numerous professionals and companies from the sector, keen to adapt to the new challenges of the digital age.

The councillor for Tourism, Francisco Jerez (Vox), highlighted the importance of this training initiative, stating that “it is not enough to offer sun and beaches; today it is essential to innovate, analyse, personalise and anticipate. That is why we wanted to bring this cutting-edge training to Mijas”. During the workshop, attendees were given practical guidance on how to apply artificial intelligence to key tasks such as content creation, customer service, data analysis and internal process management. For the councillor, AI is not a threat, but “an opportunity to improve the visitor experience, optimise processes and open up new avenues of growth for the sector”. For his part, the technical director of Training and Employment at the Provincial Council, Manuel Robles, praised Mijas’ involvement, saying that “these sessions aim to increase understanding of AI in the business world and to demonstrate how easily large volumes of information can be effectively managed”.

Suspiros de Cuatro Patas is appealing for volunteers to continue its work. Anyone interested can contact the association through its social media channels. “We ask for commitment from people who can come for four hours, either in the morning or in the afternoon, to dedicate that time to the dogs. Ultimately, we need at least three people per shift, and if those volunteers don’t show up, the dogs don’t get to go out”, said treasurer Tamara España

it is important for the dogs to build some bond with people. There are dogs that have been with us for a year and need uo to four months before they will allow themselves to be touched”.

In such cases, dedicating just one hour is enough.

At the shelter, as volunteer Lucía Martínez described, people help with different tasks depending on their availability: “When I can, I come to walk the dogs, other times I prepare meals or take them to the vet and when

Mijas participates in the latest edition of the Green Flags movement

The aim is to reward the efforts of the local hospitality industry and the activism of coastal municipalities towards a more sustainable summer

C.M. Mijas is once again taking part in the Green Flags Movement organised by the nonprofit organisation Ecovidrio, now in its sixth year. This initiative involves 181 local councils and more than 15,000 hospitality establishments and aims to reward the efforts of the local hospitality sector and the activism of coastal municipalities in promoting sustainability during the summer, particularly with regard to the proper waste management.

“This campaign aims to highlight and recognise the commitment of the local hospitality sector and our Town Hall to glass recycling, environmental protection and progress towards sustainable development”, said the councillor for the environment, Marco Cortés (PP), who encouraged the hospitality industry to take part in initiatives like this.

Participating municipalities

I don’t have much time, I share posts (on social media) because that also makes a big difference”.

Suspiros also noted that the situation becomes more challenging in summer, with a continuous stream of calls reporting abandoned animals. Without more volunteers, they will not be able to rescue more animals. “All shelters need a helping hand, and since we’re all volunteers with no paid staff, without enough volunteers there will come a time when we have to say we can’t take in more dogs because we need three or four people per shift”, stressed España.

from six autonomous communities will compete for the Green Flag for sustainability, hoping to take the title from the previous winners. In the case of Andalusia, last year’s recipients were Algeciras and Barbate. At the end of this summer, a total of 10 Green Flags will be awarded to 10 different municipalities, including two from Andalusia. This movement also involves restaurants, bars, beach bars and catering establishments in

As these volunteers assured, the experience is very rewarding. “It’s very comforting to know that, thanks to the fact that we’ve come together and made an effort, these dogs end up finding a family”, said the treasurer, while Martínez encouraged others to volunteer and said that “if you want to spend some time in the company of animals, with other colleagues, it’s very rewarding, there’s not much to think about”.
