Budget amendment approved of Over 15 Million Euros

Mijas will allocate almost six million euros to infrastructure works until the end of the year, as well as over one million euros to security and emergencies

Opposition reactions

At the plenary session held on Wednesday 11th of May, the government team of Mijas Town Hall approved the second budget amendment of the year, this time for just over 15 million euros, from the Treasury surplus. According to the councillor for Economy and Finance, Mario Bravo (PP), this credit modification includes investments and new projects which, he said, have been agreed upon with the various municipal departments, “which have justified their necessary and urgent nature, considering that it cannot be postponed until next year and, based on these criteria,

Around

which this government team also shares, we are bringing it to the plenary session today”.

Regarding the budget allocations, the councillor for Economy highlighted those aimed at improving the machinery, equipment and work of the Local Police, those that will maintain the home care service, others that will increase subsidies for family aid and local groups, as well as funds for the maintenance of the Gran Parque, the new swimming pool in La Cala and municipal car parks, among other areas. There are also almost fifty project proposals, including the development of social housing on the Finca El Maro area, the restoration of the Los Malagueños and El Cortijuelo farmhouses, the improvement of the Centre for Active Participation in Las Lagunas and the construction of a new fire station in Mijas.

After this point was presented, the PSOE Mijas expressed surprise that this budget modification did not reserve funds to “immediately” repair the roof of the Las Lagunas swimming pool, “which currently prevents thousands of users from swimming or attending backstroke classes; however, it does include nearly half a million euros to sponsor three sporting events, and we will see what economic impact these have on the municipality”, commented the Socialist councillor Josele González

In response, Bravo explained that “the Infrastructure Department is already working on putting this work out to tender, which is more complex than it seems, and it may not be possible to award the contract before January 1st, so we prefer to use this credit modification for other actions and include this repair in the 2026 budget, with a future credit retention”.

For his part, the spokesperson for Ciudadanos, José Carlos Martín, criticised, among other things, that “the investment of 150,000 euros to redraft the project for the new fire station, when there was already one that was about to be implemented and has now been discarded”.

On this point, councillor Mario Bravo stated that “the project planned by the previous government team was going to cost several million euros, as it also included an emergency school, but I believe we have other priorities and, furthermore, this government team considers that this infrastructure would be better located elsewhere, specifically on the plot currently occupied by the vehicle impound on Camino Viejo de Coín”. Finally, the opposition voted against this point, citing, among other reasons, the unfavourable reports they claim were issued by the

One of the most important initiatives, according to the government team, is the drafting of the technical project for the execution, by the council, of 40 dwellings on the site known as Finca El Maro, covering an area of 5,731 square metres. A sum of 150,000 euros has been allocated for this purpose. Once the draft has been prepared, and after the various projects have been submitted, they will be prioritised due to the social importance of this initiative, which the Town Hall describes as “the biggest boost to public housing in the last two decades”. In addition to allocating funds to design a new building for Social Services, the budget amendment, which allocates more than €1,259,000 to this departmen, plans to increase the budgets for family financial aid as well as home care service benefits. ALLOCATED to social care

“Now 150,000 euro are being invested to redraft the project for the new fire station, when there was already one that was about to be implemented and has now been thrown away”

The amendment also includes the drafting of the technical project for the improvement of the Centre for Active Participation in Las Lagunas (80,000 euros), the repair of the roofs of the sports pavilion in La Cala (150,000 euros), as well as the drafting of projects to improve the adjacent football pitch in Las Lagunas (55,000 euros) and the football pitch in Osunillas (100,000 euros).

HISTORIC INVESTMENT

TO STRENGTHEN security and emergency services

The Town Hall approved a budget amendment that includes a direct investment of over one million euros to strengthen security and emergency services in the municipality. This measure will significantly improve the resources available to the Local Police, Fire Brigade and Civil Protection.

The first deputy mayor and councillor for the Local Police, Juan Carlos Cuevas (Vox), described the approval as “a very important step towards meeting needs that have been pending for years”. Specifically, he pointed out that “over 800,000 euros are being allocated to the Local Police, including extraordinary credits (385,930 euros) and credit supplements (418,599 euros), which will allow us to renew equipment, strengthen service operability and improve conditions for the force”.

Cuevas detailed that this investment includes the purchase of body cameras, new breathalysers and speed measuring devices, mobile radars, surveillance drones, illuminated signalling systems for public roads, and modernisation of the shooting range. It also includes funds for maintenance of security systems in municipal buildings and improvements to the ventilation

system in the police headquarters garage.

Uniform renewal Funds will also be allocated for renewing uniforms and specific supplies, as well as reinforcing standard weaponry and ammunition, enabling the continuation of practical training programmes and ongoing exercises. This is in addition to materials already approved in previous budgets and soon to arrive, such as new motorcycles, a communications centre with its IT system, and bulletproof vests, all of which will further enhance the operability and safety of the Local Police.

Fire Brigade and Civil Protection

For his part, the councillor responsible for the Fire Brigade and Civil Protection, Francisco Jerez (Vox), expressed gratitude for the plenary’s support of a measure that also includes spe-

The Town Hall has recently submitted a request to the Junta de Andalucía for the repair of three rural roads that have been severely damaged by the rains: Camino de Entrerríos, Camino de la Alquería and Camino de la Fuente del Algarrobo. These actions, proposed for inclusion in the Andalusian Government’s in-kind subsidy plan, would improve not only the accessibility of these areas, but also the safety of residents, farmers and emergency personnel who travel through them.

cific allocations for both services. “Investments of this scale haven’t been made for years. Thanks to this budget modification, we will be able to advance in modernising the services and improving the response capacity”, he added. Among the planned actions for the Fire Department, Jerez highlighted the purchase of new helmets and personal protective equipment (PPE), as well as the drafting of the technical project for the future fire station building, with an initial investment of 150,000 euros.

Civil Protection will receive an investment close to 200,000 euros. Planned improvements include the supply of medical materials, emergency and intervention equipment, and road safety gear. Also included are the repair and modernisation of the high-pressure system, outfitting a logistics support vehicle, upgrading motorcycles, acquiring specific motorcyclist equipment, and a new drone for search-andrescue operations and emergency support.

During her speech, Mayoress Ana Mata (PP) praised the local government’s commitment to driving key projects for citizens, many of which had already been announced and which, by being allocated a budget, “demonstrate that our commitment is firm. We are not talking about words, but about actions”. She also took advantage of her final speaking turn to defend

the management of the current government team, “it requires order, seriousness and rigour to comply with the rules and legal certainty that every local administration must uphold”, while also reporting that “we have already begun working with the new comptroller to develop an economic and financial plan to optimise the Mijas Town Hall’s expenditure and investments”.

“I open my heart to this blessed land, with a firm voice and without fear, I give you who I am. To the people of Las Lagunas, I offer you my soul today”. These were the words with which the flamenco singer Isabel Guerrero Alarcón concluded her speech, an emotional and elegant announcement of the Las Lagunas Fairs and Festivities 2025. The event took place at the Manuel España Theatre in Las Lagunas, in front of a packed audience devoted to the artist.

“It is a pleasure and a great privilege for me to be here today. Being the town crier for the Las Lagunas Fair 2025 is a gift that honours and fulfils me, but it is also a great responsibility. Today, I open my heart and my entire soul. My father was from Fuengirola and my mother from La Sierrezuela, and it is from these two great springs, these two rivers, that this heartfelt proclamation is born, one that unites two towns and their people with immense and genuine affection”, said the singer, who was accompanied by guitarist Andrés Cansino

An elegant proclamation Guerrero, daughter of the renowned flamenco singer Cristóbal Guerrero Escalona known as ‘Barquerito de Fuengirola’, delivered a truly elegant proclamation, combining recitation with singing. The speaker took the audience on a journey through the municipality, its streets, its squares and its people. Throughout her speech, Guerrero made several heartfelt mentions, beginning with her mother, who is no longer with her and to whom she paid an emotio-

Her son, Ángel Rayo ‘El Barquerito’, also had a special place in the proclamation, not only because she had some heartfelt words of admiration and affection for him, but also because the young artist sang for the occasion, to the surprise of many.

The speaker also had words of admiration for her father and for Las Lagunas, its streets, its corners and the laughter of its people, “for whom I lose my senses”. Guerrero mentioned the Peña Flamenca La Unión del Cante, where she tea-

Congratulations

The mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), gave a speech to those present and thanked the singer for her proclamation. “It was a very moving proclamation, full of emotion, taking us on a journey from her childhood, remembering her father and mother. In the end, it is the people who make us who we are and those memories so deeply rooted in our land, in our Mijas, which is also part of the announcement of the upcoming Las Lagunas Fair which stirs so many fond memories”.

The councillor for Festivities, Silvia Marín (PP), also had words for the town crier: “Not only did I like it, I loved it”, said the councillor, adding that “the truth is we really enjoyed the event, not just the performances by Ginés and Salma, which were fabulous, but also that wonderful proclamation by Isabel Guerrero, with her melodious voice and the heartfelt emotion she brought to it”.

On stage, the mayoress of Mijas presented the town crier with a plaque on behalf of the Town Hall as a token of gratitude. After the proclamation, the poster announcing the Las Lagunas Fair and Festivities 2025 was unveiled by the town crier and the mayoress. The image, created by Mijas Comunicación, announces that the festivities will take place from the 25th to 29th of June. Ginés González from Málaga performed at the beginning of the event, while the young Salma brought the evening to a close. It was, without doubt, a night full of emotion.

The Town Hall awards the contract for the collection, transfer, shelter and management of animals

The Mijas Town Hall has signed a contract for the collection, transfer, shelter and management of pets and other animals. This contract has a budget of 1,387,592.72 euros (including VAT) and will be valid for four years. The total cost is distributed over the following years: 173,499.08 euros in 2025; between 2026 and 2028, 346,898.18 euros per year; and in 2029, 173,499.10 euros.

This was announced by the councillor for Animal Welfare, Marco Cortés (PP), who explained that the aim is to ensure “the welfare of all animals in Mijas and their proper treatment”. In this regard, the awarded company will be responsible for collecting and sheltering animals considered abandoned or lost in public spaces, always following the principles of animal welfare at the centre and acting in accordance with the procedures established by law.

Cortés emphasised that this contract includes a 24-hour service every day of the week for urgent cases, that is, those that pose a real danger to people or cause severe suffering to animals. This service will be activated fo-

ENVIRONMENT

Among other actions, the successful bidder will actively promote the adoption of the animals taken in

llowing notification from the Local Police or, failing that, by the Municipal Health Service, “with all that this entails for speeding up police action”. The company will be required to collect animals when owners no longer want them, animals found on properties involved in judicial proceedings, or those affected by diseases that may pose a risk to people, among other situations.

Accommodation

Additionally, the contractor must provide shelter for collected animals at their facilities, where the animals may

be put up for adoption. During the shelter period, necessary procedures will be carried out to enable the recovery of lost animals. Regarding abandoned animals, the company will actively promote their adoption using its own resources, social media platforms, and collaboration with animal protection societies. In addition, veterinary treatments will be provided, and the contract also covers an emergency veterinary service that includes transport and a daytime emergency service until 22:00 hours and nighttime emergency service operational from 22:00 to 10:00 hours.

So, here we point out where it lives, in this Special Area of Conservation (SAC)”, said the coordinator of the Creamar groups,, Patricia Gutiérrez This marine plant is very “impor-

tant” for the environment “because it produces oxygen and absorbs large amounts of CO2. In fact, one square metre of Posidonia oceanica produces ten times more oxygen than one square metre of terrestrial forest. THE Junta to TENDER THIS YEAR the project to expand the IES La Cala

The project has a budget of over four million euros and will provide five additional ESO classes and five Bachillerato classes at the school in La Cala

María José Gómez / Design: Isabel Merino

The Regional Ministry of Education and Vocational Training will put out to tender the project for the expansion of the La Cala Secondary School (IES La Cala) during 2025. This was announced on Friday 6th by the regional delegate, Miguel Briones, and the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), who were accompanied by the councillor for Education, Juan José Torres Trella (PP); the headmaster of the school, Sergio Sánchez; and Luminita

Nicolescu, representative of the El Torreón Parents’ Association (AMPA EL Torreón).

The mayoress of Mijas expressed her satisfaction with this announcement, which, in her opinion, is a firm commitment from the ‘Junta de Andalucía’ to provide the municipality with infrastructure in line with its growth: “The population of Mijas has grown significantly. Many families choose to live in our municipality, which makes it necessary to have adequate infrastructure. In this regard, working with the various administrations is essential and, in the

specific case of the education department, this relationship is very close and we are working towards a common goal”. According to Mata, “the centre will go from having two Compulsory Secondary Education (ESO) classes and two Bachillerato classes to having five ESO classes and five Bachillerato classes, that is, 12 more classrooms, in addition to a restructuring of the centre, which currently provides education for many children in the area. This restructuring will also be adapted to this growth”

During his visit to Mijas, Briones recalled that the IES La Cala,

Infranstructures and Education

which was built around 2006 with a D2 B2.2 structure (two lines of Compulsory Secondary Education and two lines of Bachillerato), “has gradually expanded its educational provision to meet the needs of the school population, which has led to the installation of temporary modular classrooms. At present, the school has 620 students”.

The planned expansion will provide the centre with five lines of ESO and five lines of Bachillerato through the construction of a new building adjoining the existing one, which will include 12 new classrooms for secondary and Bachillerato, along with the other teaching spaces required. Additionally, the existing building will be reconfigured and renovated to provide the rest of the necessary

facilities. In order to carry out the project, which has an estimated budget of 4.12 million euros, a new plot of land, similar in size to the current one, will be incorporated into the centre, bringing the total area to 10,575 square metres.

The headmaster of IES La Cala, Sergio Sánchez, expressed his gratitude that the project is “moving forward” and added that “little by little, we are making progress. What matters most is that we eventually recover the spaces we lost and, ultimately, it’s the students who benefitnts who benefit”.

Mayka Hernández and María Vega showcase their work and process

The Mijas Town Hall, through the Department of Tourism, inaugurated a new exhibition of local crafts on Friday 6th, featuring the creators Mayka Hernández and María Vega, members of the Mijas Craft Association. The exhibition can be visited throughout the month of June at the Mi-

The councillor for Tourism, Francisco Jerez (Vox), highlighted the importance of this type of initiative. “These exhibitions reinforce our cultural identity and support local talent. Mijas is a municipality with a rich craft tradition and it is essential that both residents and visitors can learn about and appreciate the work of our artisans”.

He also stressed that the Tourism Department “is committed to initiatives that connect culture and art with the visitor experience. This exhibition is an opportunity to discover not only unique pieces, but also the stories and processes behind each work”.

Mayka Hernández presents part of her copper jewellery work. “I wanted to bring a small sample of

what my work as a craftswoman involves. Not only the final result, but also the process. We often see a piece and are not aware of the craftsmanship behind it”, she explained.

Mayka, who learned her technique in Chile, pointed out that “after fifteen years in the trade, I have focused on copper for the last four. I buy sheet metal, wire, profiles... and from scratch, with a saw, file, fire and hammer, I build each piece”. Her jewellery, inspired by nature, is marked by an organic aesthetic.

For her part, ceramist María Vega aimed to use this exhibition to showcase her hourney as a craftswoman. “I’ve focused on telling my story from when I first started out to where I am now. Soroptimist International shows its charitable side at its spring dinner

C.B. On Saturday 7th, Soroptimist International once again held its traditional spring charity dinner, which they organise every year to raise funds. Around 50 people gathered at the Benavra restaurant, where they enjoyed an evening among friends and members. The event highlighted the importance of community support, sustainability and women’s empowerment, demonstrating this group’s commitment to society.

One of its members, Giovanna Hurtado, told us that “Soroptimist brings together the common sense of a group of professional women who are sensitive to the

The artist presented an expressionist blend of sculptures, poetry and paintings that invites visitors to discover themselves and transcend the limits of illusion. With a sensitivity that goes beyond the purely visual, Averanova’s work unfolds as a map to one’s inner self. we are going to present the poster”, explained the president of the group, Daphne Theunissen. This is the Soroptimist ‘Feed your optimism’ Award. An awareness campaign focused on promoting sustainability that seeks to identify companies and organisations in Malaga that are leading sustainable initiatives by promoting responsible consumption and supporting local producers.

Other activities

Theunissen also clarified that “with the dinner we are also going

to raise money for our basketball team. The girls are now 12 years old and are playing very well. They don’t always win, but that’s something that happens in life. We are also preparing the leadership academy for women, which will be held in November and will feature 24 young women from all over Europe. We are working nonstop but we are doing well. It’s an evening with lots of friends, so it’s a joy to be here”. For more information or to collaborate, please contact the association atsoroptimist.costadelsol@gmail.com.
