“Las Lagunas has traditionay experienced flooding problems, and this action aims to put an end to them” Mayoress of Mijas ANA MATA
Report by Beatriz Martín / Design: I.Merino
The mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), and the councillor for Infrastructures and Works, Juan José Torres Trella (PP), accompanied by the managing director of Acosol, Matilde Mancha, visited the construction site of the storm tank being built in Las Lagunas on Wednesday 21st. This is a major urban water infrastructure project designed to relieve the sewage system during periods of rainfall. The work is already 70% complete and, according to reports, could be finished by autumn.
A storm tank, also known as a spillway or rainwater tank, is an underground reservoir that forms part of the sewerage network. Its main function is to store rainwater, especially during heavy rainfall, and regulate its flow to treatment plants. This helps prevent treatment plants from becoming overloaded and discharging It

untreated water into rivers or watercourses. In the case of Mijas, the tank is located on Avenida de Andalucía, where it will be buried underground and will serve three
areas of the town: Las Lagunas North, Las Lagunas South and the area around the Fuengirola river valley. In total, it will benefit around 15,000 homes, although
According to the mayoress, “this infrastructure solves problems that often cause so much damage to the citizens. The Town Hall is closely monitoring the development of this major infrastructure because it is linked to the development of this part of the municipality”. Ana Mata also expressed her gratitude to “the technicians for the great work they are doing”. The councillor for Infrastructures and Works shared a similar view. Juan José Torres Trella emphasised that “the tank mainly benefits the entire Las Lagunas area, where, due to its age, there is no separation between rainwater and sewage pipes. During heavy storms, rainwater and sewage mix, creating a funnel effect. It is in the storm tank where the separation takes place, retaining all the waste”.
it has the capacity to relieve the sewage network of up to 40,000, according to the project’s technical report. The work has a budget of five million euros.
Acosol will take over the management of the tank once it comes into operation. In this regard, the managing director of the company, Matilde Mancha, explained that “it has taken around four or five years of processing” and described the project as “an example of publicprivate collaboration”. Mancha highlighted the ongoing cooperation between the joint entity, the Town Hall, and the compensation board, the body promoting the project, throughout the development of the works.
For his part, José Antonio Jaimez, construction manager alongside Rafael Escassi, pointed out that “there are times when the treatment plant cannot absorb all the water it receives, which is why storm tanks are designed for this purpose. Mijas is innovative in this respect, as this is a necessary but very costly infrastructure”. He added that the tank “is cleaned automatically, thanks to four flushing systems developed to discharge seven cubic metres per second, which will help prevent potential contamination, particularly of the Fuengirola River. It also has sieves to stop wipes, cotton buds and solids from ending up in the watercourse”.

The infrastructure is located on Avenida Andalucía in Las Lagunas, will be underground and is expected to be operational in autumn. The Mijas Town Hall, Acosol and the compensation board, which has been the promoter of the works, are working on its development.

MIJAS AWARDS TWO SECTIONS OF THE COASTAL PATH LINKING La Cala and Fuengirola
The work will be carried out by a joint venture with a budget of 4.1 million and will be completed by the end of the year, following a six-month implementation period
Report by Carmen Marín / Info: Beatriz Martín
The Mijas Town Hall has taken a decisive step towards ensuring that the continuation of the Coastal Path from La Cala de Mijas to Fuengirola becomes a reality after three years of bureaucratic processes, as an initial tender was unsuccessful due to prices not aligning with the market and the company awarded the contract for the second tender declined to carry out the work. “This work marks progress in completing the Coastal Path as it passes through Mijas, an infrastructure that has become a hallmark of Mijas. In fact, I
would like to remind you that it has once again been awarded the Blue Trail Flag, which reflects its excellence”, said the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), referring to this infrastructure.
The councillor responsible for Procurement, Infrastructures and Works, Juan José Torres Trella (PP), explained last Friday 16th that the contract had been signed that week: “We have already awarded the contract to the joint venture that will carry out this section of the path with a budget of approximately 4,100,000 euros (including VAT)”. Now, added the councillor, it is time to draw up the certificate
of commencement and begin gathering materials, mainly wood. Torres Trella clarified that these will be “the first works” to be carried out by the joint venture, formed by the companies Sardalla Española and Herysan 2007. “Then, in mid-summer, around August, the wood will be laid on the path”, explained the councillor, adding that this section will run parallel to the motorway, so the beach area will not be affected by the work, which will be carried out with minimal disruption to beachgoers and tourists. This work will complete the Coastal Path, with 2.3 kilometres still to be put out to tender. Specifically, this contract corresponds to two sections of the route, approximately 5.3 kilometres long, linking La Cala with Fuengirola: the first of these sections runs from La Cala to the El Sheriff restaurant and the second connects the El Faro
restaurant with Fuengirola. The section linking these two remains pending and, according to the councillor, is still subject to sectoral reports. Once completed, the 12 kilometres of the Mijas Coastal Path would be finished, connecting the entire municipality along
the coast, from Marbella to Fuengirola. “There is an area between the awarded sections for which the project is still with the DPH (Public Water Authority) due to some complications regarding the beach line,” explained Torres Trella, who nevertheless pointed out that this section between the El Sheriff beach bar and the El Faro restaurant already has pedestrian access, so the continuity of the path is guaranteed.
The deadline for completing these two sections is six months from the signing of the contract, meaning that by the end of the year, Mijeños will be able to enjoy this new section of the path for walking and cycling.

Rotary Club’s generous heart beats strong on its eighth anniversary
F.M.R. The Rotary Club Mijas International has celebrated its eighth anniversary in style with a gathering that brought together founding members, current members, friends, international guests and even two former British District Governors. It was a celebration to reflect on the journey so far and look ahead to the future, always guided by the motto that inspires its members: “Service before self”.
The president of the club, Katja Range, thanked the foun-
The club celebrated its anniversary by looking back at its projects and reaffirming its commitment to Mijas ding members, highlighting their “foresight in forming this thriving club”. In her speech, Range reflected how the ambitions of 2017 have evolved, transforming the club into an entity “with a business-like” approach that supports projects both at home and abroad.
Among recent achievements, the president proudly mentioned this year’s successful commu-
nity project: the installation of sun sails in the garden of Adimi, the Association for People with Disabilities in Mijas. A contribution that provides shade for their outdoor activities. But Rotary Mijas International’s vision goes beyond our borders, as demonstrated by its work to support organic farming in Peru.

The UNMS addressed the challenges facing the English community
F.M.R. Attention to the growing community of English-speaking seniors on the Costa del Sol was the focus of the summit organised by the United Nationalities of Marbella Summit (UNMS) on Tuesday 20th. The meeting took place at The Harbour restaurant and for the first time expanded its focus beyond the host city. The initiative, under the slogan ‘Before it happens to you’, was spearheaded by Nicole King, president of UNMS. King explained that “the British consulate is extremely concerned that it is not prepared enough to deal with the increase in the number of elderly expatriates and is well aware of the areas that are not covered”. The event brought togethe around 40 people, including various charities, associations and administrations. Among the participants were representatives

One of the outcomes of the summit was an agreement to hold follow-up meetings every three months between the UNMS and the Mijas Town Hall, a collaboration that King greatly appreciated. This is another step towards building a more effective support network for those who have chosen the Costa del Sol as their home, and where Mijas is demonstrating its commitment.
A setback that will certainly not diminish the club’s commitment. Eight years is a long time, but knowing the spirit of Rotary, they are surely already planning new projects to continue leaving their mark of solidarity in Mijas and around the world. From Mijas Comunicación, we wish them a very happy anniversary and many more years to come.

Mijas strengthens its protocols against gender-based violence
Local Police, Civil Guard and Town Hall hold key meeting to improve comprehensive support and safety for women at risk
Francisco M. Romero / Beatriz Martín
Coordinated action and comprehensive care for victims. These are the pillars of the technical round table on violence against women held on Wednesday 21st at the Las Lagunas Branch Office. The protection of women at risk and the ongoing improvement of action protocols were the focus of the monitoring committee meetinge, which brought together all the agents involved with a clear objective, as expressed by the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP): “We want a municipality free of violence against women. We do not want violence against women in our municipality and we all have to work together”.
Mata also stressed that “education is essential and, for this reason, the Town Hall is also working to reach young people who are the present and the future of society”.
This technical meeting was attended by officials and technicians from the Mijas Local Police, including its chief and the SIMA team, which specialises in gender violence; the Civil Guard, represented by the captain of the local command; and the Family and Equal Opportunities team led by the mayoress herself, together with professionals from the Municipal Women’s Centre. Mata stressed that the system, “works in Mijas thanks to the daily coordination carried out by all those who have met today”. In fact, these meetings serve to address new situations, update regulations and, crucially, ensure that information flows “so that all women experiencing gender-based violence in our municipality feel supported”.
Protocols and tailored care
From the Municipal Women’s Centre, its lawyer, Encarnación
Daunis, said that these meetings, “which stem from the need to coordinate on issues of gender violence, are fundamental for us. In principle, what we have discussed is how to coordinate and, if possible, further improve the organisation between the security forces and our work area”. In these sessions, the “Local Police, the Civil Guard and ourselves talk about victims by name and we can see what each person needs or how we can help others”, allowing us to make protocols more flexible and offer more personalised and comprehensive care, while always safeguarding privacy.
Unconditional support
The mayoress of Mijas wanted to “convey to all citizens, and especially to those women who may be experiencing genderbased violence at home, that they should allow themselves be helped, that they must break free from that cycle of violence, and that we have a team of highly trained, experienced professionals who will support them every step of the way”.
