The mayoresses of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), Torremolinos, Margarita del Cid, and Ronda, María de la Paz Fernández Lobato, led “Ellas gobiernan. Ciudades en transformación” (Women in government. Cities in transformation), a forum held on Wednesday 14th at CIOMijas where they discussed urban regeneration, quality tourism and the city model of the future.

Mijas thus inaugurated this series of round tables organised by the media outlet Artículo 14, with the aim of creating a forum to dis-

C.Bejarano. The countdown to the Romería de Las Lagunas 2025 has begun. Last Saturday, 10th of May, the official poster, designed by Aída Gómez, was unveiled.

The poster announces this popular celebration in honour of the Virgen de la Paz (Our Lady of Peace), which this year celebrates its 40th anniversary and will be held on Sunday, 25th of May.

“Behind all this, there is a great deal of affection, love and dedication, and when things are done with love, they turn out just as they have today”, said the president of the brotherhood, Bosco Rivas

The poster design

cuss the future of the main cities governed by women and to learn about the local strategies and city models promoted by their mayoresses, who, according to the event’s presenter, are credited with “greater organisational skills and empathy than their male counterparts”.

The Mijas of the future

Ana Mata, who hosted the event, said that “the city model that needs to be implemented in Mijas

is one that is compatible with the people who live here, who want to grow in Mijas, that doesn’t force anyone to leave, a place where you can raise your children and find employment, a model that is also compatible with tourism, the kind of tourism that have a second home here”.

For the mayoress of Mijas, it is also important that the Mijas of the future is built on pillars of respect for the environment, that promote accessibility and are centered on

people, “a sustainable model, a model where accessibility is feasible, as it is necessary, and where green spaces and sports facilities are developed so that children and families can share moments together.

As I always say a Mijas with soul, that Mijas that we people undoubtedly seek, with a model based on people and their needs”.

Equality, a fundamental pillar

All three mayoresses, those of Mijas, Torremolinos and Ronda, highlighted the importance of the tourism sector for their towns and the need to always work to defend equality. This was emphasised by Margarita del Cid, who stressed that, “without hesitation and without shame, equality, diversity and freedom must always be the beacons that guide our public action as a government. We are half

of society and we must claim our space in all areas of society, while also ensuring that this is always respected”.

Connection between a dministrations

The three mayoresses also highlighted the importance of establishing relationships with other administrations, institutions and entities in order to achieve changes that will bring about a positive transformation of the city. In this regard, María de la Paz Fernández Lobato said she felt “proud to share the table with them, to present our vision of a city. Obviously, there are significant differences between the municipalities of the Costa del Sol and those inland, but, in the end, we are women who govern, women who implement the policies needed to transform our cities”.

The poster is not just a work of digital art, it is a reflection of identity, values and devotion. As Rivas said, Gómez “has managed to capture the essence of the pilgrimage.

“It has been an afternoon that already heralds the joy of the pilgrimage, of experiencing it as a community”, said parish priest Manuel Jiménez. In addition to the presentation, during the event attendees were able to

enjoy an exhibition of some of the posters that have announced this celebration over its fortyyear history, and two plaques of appreciation were presented.

One to the author of the poster, Aída Gómez, and the other to Mijas Comunicación for their collaboration.

The pilgrimage will take place on Sunday the 25th, starting at 11:15 hours, and this year the Peña Caballista de Mijas will accompany the Virgin on her arrival at Esparragal.

Mijas renews the BLUE FLAG

f the Coastal Path

This recognition highlights the commitment to the preservation and restoration of trails for sustainable enjoyment

The mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), and the councillor for beaches, Daniel Gómez Teruel (PP), raised the Blue Trail Flag on the Coastal Path on the morning of Friday 9th of May. This is a distinction awarded annually by the Association for Environmental and Consumer Education (Adeac) and which the municipality has renewed this year.

The town has once again received this recognition, which highlights the commitment of towns and administrations to restoring and preserving trails and routes that promote environmental education and the sustainable enjoyment of our environment.

The mayoress recalled that Mijas has held this distinction since 2016, for which it complies with a series of indicators and criteria divided into four categories that have been evaluated by the organisation: characteristics of the trails and routes; information, signage and infrastructure on the trails; conservation and management of natural and cultural heritage; and public use of the trails.

“This recognition is great news that encourages us even more to continue working to offer the best services and ensure that Mijas continues to be a benchmark. It is everyone’s responsibility to care for and maintain our environment and public spaces. Distinctions such as the Blue Trail Flag also highlight the richness of our coastline”, explained the mayoress.

A DISTINCTION HELD since 2016

Mijas has once again received this recognition, now for the ninth consecutive year. To qualify, it must meet a series of indicators and criteria divided into four categories, which have been evaluated by the Association for Environmental and Consumer Education (Adecac):

In addition, the mayoress also referred to the five blue flags awarded to the municipality, while highlighting that, for the first time, “we have achieved recognition for sustainability, not only for the preservation of the coastal fauna and flora, but also for the educational workshops held to raise awareness among young people of the importance of environmental education”.

We more than meet all the requirements, as certified by the external audit. The effort made by all the sectors involved is commendable; we work 365 days a year to ensure this is the case”. He also pointed out that the Adeac has congratulated the

The mayoress of Mijas stressed that the Town Hall is continuing to work to ensure that all the beaches on the Mijas coast maintain the same “homogeneity”. “It is important to offer a unified image”, explained Mata, highlighting the importance of working together with beach entrepreneurs because “unity makes strength and we must always liste to and respond to their needs”.

For his part, the representative of the Mijas Beach Entrepreneurs Association, Carlos Morales, who was also at the flag-raising ceremony, said that “this flag is the result of a job well done and is another badge of honour for our coastline”. With the start of the high season just around the corner, Morales said that “we all have to work together so that Mijas continues to grow. We are already at the top, but we have to go further. There are more than 20 beach businesses and, for our part, we are always 100% ready to offer the best”.

Family and Equal Opportunities

Every 15th of May, the International Day of Families is commemorated, and the Mijas Town Hall is going to celebrate it in style. A full calendar of activities aimed at families has been organised, which will take place in the three main areas of the municipality.

“The family is the fundamental pillar of Spanish society, which we must preserve so that it has all the services it deserves, because providing for a family is difficult; that is why both the Department of Social Inclusion and the other departments are at the disposal

In addition to reading texts they had written themselves, the schoolchildren took part in this commemoration with drawings they had made in class, in which they explained how they see their families. These drawings were used to create the mural ‘My family, my home’. “It’s very important, because they are always there for you, they look after you, protect you, and always love you”, explained Alba Madrid, a 4th year student; her classmate, Anais Moreno, added that “for me, family is very important because they look after us, put up with us, protect us and love us very much”. The mayoress, for her part, recalled that the Town Hall has its own Family Department, “from which we will organise special activities, but also work throughout the year on specific actions to help all the families that make up the great family of Mijas”.

“Mijas wants to take families into account in all its actions”

After reading the texts written by the children, the mayoress of Mijas read manifesto from the Town Hall in which she highlighted the importance of the family

“Mijas wants to keep families in mind in all actions carried out by the Town Hall. In fact, we will soon be publishing the call for applications already announced in the budget: birth grants. We want to support families so that they are not alone and know they can rely on a team of professionals within the Town Hall”, added the mayoress and councillor for Family and Equal

Opportunities.“Do you know who my family is, apart from my mother, my husband and my kids? My family is also the municipality of Mijas”, said Mata, addressing the 4th year students from the San Sebastián School. The mayoress also invited all neighbours to participate in the programme of events designed by the Family and Equal Opportunities Department to commemorate this occasion.

Infrastructures

Work on the Los Santos car park in Las Lagunas is now 70% complete.

This was announced on Thursday 15th by the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), during a visit to this new infrastructure, accompanied by the councillor for Works, Juan José Torres Trella (PP).

The car park in the Los Santos neighbourhood will occupy almost the entire area beneath the La Cala, Mijas and Los Olivos squares, connecting them all via Calle San Matías in a four-storey underground structure with a total of 234 parking spaces. The cost of the project is 15.7 million euros.

“Of the total, 190 spaces will be allocated on a monthly subscription basis for residents in the area, with nine spaces reserved for people with reduced mobility and six equipped with electric charging points”, said Mata.

Entrance and exit ramps

The project also includes a vehicle entrance ramp to the car park from Calle San Jorge, next to the connection with Plaza de La Cala, and a vehicle exit ramp from the car park in Plaza de Mijas. The two ramps are located on the central island, partially occupying the pedestrian area and parking area.

In addition, two pedestrian accesses will be provided from the outside, equipped with stairs and lifts, in compliance with regulations on the removal of architectural barriers and ensuring accessibility.

CONSTRUCTION

To build the car park, the retaining walls that support the structure were constructed first, followed by the upper slab. Afterwards, construction continued underground down to level -2, and then to level -4. Finally, the intermediate levels -1 and -3 will be built.

ACCORDING TO PINA, THIS METHOD GENERATES LESS NOISE and causes less disruption to access to doorways and garages.

will be completed in mid-June

The Town Hall apologised to residents for the inconvenience caused. “This project has involved large team of engineers and specialists”, said the mayoress, who stressed that “from the very beginning, despite how complicated the work was, we tried to cause as little disturbance as possible to the neighbours”. “We know that any construction work involves some inconvenience”, added the mayoress, who assured that things are now calmer and that “from next month, residents will no longer hear the machinery that has been working in the area over the last few month” In this regard, Pina explained that “we expect that by mid-June or perhaps week earlier, the excavation equipment will have left the site, as it is the equipment generating the most noise”, with noise limited to the days when concrete pouring is necessary.

In this regard, the mayoress sta-

The execution of the work, which covers an area of 2,800 square metres, is proving complex. “It is being built underground, so in this specific case, we are going down to level -2, constructing the entire slab on that level, and then going down to level -4, constructing the bottom of the car park, and from there we will build levels -1 and -3”, explained the representative of Gyocivil in Andalusia, Ángel Pina

ted that “this is a very complicated project due to its location, as it is surrounded by homes, which is why a large team of engineers has been involved. The aim is to provide this area with the car park it so badly needs”, adding that “out of political responsibility, we are continuing with the commitments we have made”. She also announced that “if everything goes as planned, the work could be completed in October”.

The mayoress also announced that the application period for parking spaces will open soon “so that when the work is finished and we are handed over the keys to the car park, so to speak, residents will know which parking space they will have”.

On Saturday, 10th of May, a walk for suicide prevention took place in La Cala, which was held simultaneously in many other cities around the world. The event, called ‘Darkness into Light’, had almost 50 participants and was coordinated by Afesol Mental Health.

This campaign began in Dublin 17 years ago through the Pieta House Foundation and Afesol Salud Mental joined the initiative a decade ago. “Starting at night, symbolises the darkness in which many people, who even think about suicide, find themselves, but the dawn

reflects that light is coming, both for those going through it and for their families”, said one of the parti-

F.M. Romero. An invitation to slow down the frantic pace of everyday life and reconnect with the essence of the earth. This is what multidisciplinary artist Jessica Persson proposes in her new and evocative exhibition, ‘Colours of the Land’, which opened on Saturday 10th at the Centro de Artes de Mijas Pueblo, where it will be on display until the 8th of June.

A refuge for the soul and the senses in the heart of the Virgen de la Peña Square in Mijas Pueblo, with a collection of ceramic pieces that are literally born from the Mijas landscape that surrounds and nourishes this creator, who also teaches at this centre.

González, added that “our group continues to fight and demand more resources to prevent suicide, a subject that has been taboo for many years, although little by little more and more people are talking about it”.

Every year in Spain, around 4,000 families are affected by the loss of a loved one, which means that 10 people take their own lives every day in Spain. This is why it is so important to continue promoting this type of activity to raise awareness of this issue. “The Mijas Town Hall has also joined this cause, above all to highlight the work that Afesol does, offering unconditional support to people suffering from mental health problems and trying to prevent suicide”, said the councillor for Social Inclusion, Mari Francis Alarcón (PP), who also attended the event. The walk concluded with a social breakfast gathering in La Cala.

Mijas Felina prepares for its tenth anniversary

Ed. Deparment. Mijas Felina is celebrating its tenth anniversary by organising a very special day, which will take place on Sunday 18th of May, from 10 to 15 hours in the La Cala Branch Office Square. The celebration will feature belly dancing, bachata, crafts and markets, as well as tapas, homemade sweets and refreshments. All proceeds will go towards the sterilisation, feeding and care of community cats. With this event, the group wants to celebrate the 10 years they have been working for the welfare of community cats. “We have organised this with the collaboration of the Foreigners Department, whom we would like to thank for always being there to help us”, explained the head of Mijas Felina, Manuela Bernardo

me”, Persson confessed during the opening. Her creative process is one of total immersion, as she works “where I live, directly on site, choosing a place that inspires me and moves me”. The artist carefully collects terracotta, sienna and amber-coloured clays, stones, wood and even bones, elements that she then incorporates into her works, using her hands

as her main tool and letting the environment dictate the textures and shapes. The result is organic ceramics, full of tactile surfaces that explore the boundaries between everyday objects and sculptural pieces.

But beyond aesthetics, ‘Colours of the Land’ is a tribute to nature and a reflection on “loneliness, freedom and finding our

roots in an anxious world that is spinning faster and faster”. As the artist herself explained, “sometimes we don’t see our inner light and we are left without answers. However, when we stop, connect with nature and listen to it, we can find and see the solutions”. It is a call to “reconnect with yourself” and to “stop to find calm”.

A vibrant centre

The president of the Mijas Arts Centre, Pernille Knudtzon, did not hide her satisfaction during the presentation: “Jessica is a teacher here, she makes very spectacular art, so it is a pleasure to invite everyone to come and see this exhibition and contemplate what we do here. Because we have a professional art centre and I am proud of it”. Knudtzon recalled that the centre, founded more than half a century ago thanks to a donation from two American citizens with “a deep love for art”, remains true to its vocation of offering artistic opportunities, “especially to children”.

That is why the Mijas Arts Centre, as its president explained, is a hub of activity, with exhibitions that are renewed every month, the next one, arriving in June, will feature work by Ludmila Serra, with sculptures and drawings, and a wide range of regular classes that include ceramics, painting, drawing, decoration and even Pilates, as well as specific workshops such as mosaics for children and abstract painting.

A complete artist Jessica Persson, who holds a degree in ceramics from the San Telmo School of Art in Malaga and has an international career, brings her vision and expertise to this melting pot that is the Mijas Arts Centre. Her ‘Colours of the Land is, in short, an opportunity to see the landscape of Mijas transformed and, perhaps, to find in these pieces an echo of our own need for connection and serenity. An exhibition to look at and feel calmly.
