As part of this plan, the Local Police have carried out an extensive surveillance operation across the municipality, covering Mijas Pueblo, Las Lagunas, La Cala, and other areas, both
coastal and rural areas.
Since the 11th of April, a total of 15 arrests have been made, most of them related to arrest warrants. These actions have been possible thanks to the increased identification and surveillance work in strategic areas
of the municipality, in coordination with other security forces.

On Thursday 24th, the Mijas Book Fair 2025 began in the ‘Plaza de la Candelaria’ (Candelaria Square), this time with the children of CEIP Los Campanales as protagonists, who participated in a reading motivation workshop, sharing the morning with the writer, Virginia Rodríguez
The mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), and the councillor for Culture, Juan Carlos Maldonado (PMP), inaugurated this great event dedicated to books, which aims to promote reading among all citizens, especially among the youngest members of the family. In her speech, the mayoress recalled that books are also an educational tool for many families “because it is true that sometimes it is difficult to communicate with children and teenagers, especially when there are screens in between, and we forget how important it is to have that moment of reading with them, in the afternoon or when they go to bed before going to sleep”, she said.
For his part, the councillor for Culture assured that “this year the fair looks very good, firstly because of the location, right in the centre of Las Lagunas, with parking, a children’s area and a lot of people around”.
To each their own, in tastes as in books
A group of schoolchildren took part in a reading motivation workshop and discovered the first children’s story by Virginia Rodríguez who proved to be a great reader, “I love it much more than watching TV, the last book I read was ‘Persepolis’, about the Iranian Islamic revolution, and also another one about Hitler’s time, because I like history a lot”.

In the book, she recounts her experience during the pandemic with her two young children (one of whom had heart surgery), who continued their studies while, like us all, being locked down at home. “I decided to transform our experiences into magical things, and what started as survival turned into a very beautiful jour-

Valtocado celebrates the centenary of the arrival of its Virgin
to this rural area
The image of the Inmaculada will be taken on Friday May 2nd next to the hermitage of the Virgen de la Peña and there will be a Way of the Cross through the village
Report by C. Luque / Design: I.Merino / Translate: C.Arroyo
The neighbours of Valtocado are celebrating the centenary of the arrival of the ‘Virgen de la Inmaculada’ (Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception) in their rural area. For this reason, on the 2nd of May they will celebrate a religious ceremony in the hermitage of the Virgen de la Peña, where a mass will be held, followed by a transfer and Way of the Cross to the Parish Church of the Inmaculada.
On the 29th of April 1925, the neighbours of the Valtocado district, led by the school teacher
The association wants to celebrate the beginning of its pilgrimage with this special event
at the time, Genoveva Ferrero, obtained an image of the ‘Virgen de la Inmaculada Concepción’ for this area with the authorisation of the ecclesiastical and civil authorities. The small sculpture, which became known as the ‘Virgen de Valtocado’, was installed in a small chapel inside the building that housed the school, the ‘Casa El Cortijuelo’. To welcome the image, the neighbours also make a pilgrimage from the old town hall in the village to the new chapel.
According to the vice-president of the Valtocado Neighbourhood Association, Antonio Tamayo, “we have a very important date coming up because we want to celebrate the centenary of our Virgin and also of the pilgrimage. We believe it is the oldest documented in the municipality. We would like to invite everyone in the municipality to join us in this celebration”.
The association will hold a mass at the hermitage of the Virgen de la Peña at 20:00 hours, followed by a transfer to the Parish Church of the Inmaculada Concepción in the gardens of La Muralla, stopping at the Casa Museo, the old town hall. Also during Sunday Mass there will be a special mention of the image of the ‘Virgen de la Inmaculada de Valtocado’.
The mayoress of Mijas Ana Mata (PP) received the representatives of the association at the Town Hall on Tuesday 22nd to support the event and congratulate the neighbours for their initiative. According to Mata, “this is an unusual event that the neighbours have been able to maintain, it’s good that these traditions are preserved because ‘Mijas con Alma’ (Mijas with Soul) represents these customs. From the Town Hall, as a local authority, we join the actions that the neighbours are organising next weekend to commemorate this special event”.
SOME HISTORY
‘LA VIRGEN DE LA INMACULADA’, IN THE ‘CASA EL CORTIJUEJO’ since 1925
On April 19th, 1925, the authorities of Mijas signed the handover certificate of the image of the Virgen de la Inmaculada Concepción to the neighbours of Valtocado. This document established the festivity of the Virgin, which was moved to the so-called ‘Casa El Cortijuelo’, on the third Sunday in April.
According to the records of the time, on the morning of the 19th of April 1925, a group of neighbours from the rural districts of Valtocado and El Hinojal went to the parish church of Mijas Pueblo to receive from the hands of the parish priest José Jiménez del Pino the statue of the ‘Virgen de la Inmaculada Concepción’ (Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception), “giving rest to their bodies to give occupation to their spirit”, according to the records. or the first time, the
image was taken on a pilgrimage to the so-called ‘Casa El Cortijuelo’, which served as a school, in the Valtocado district.
Present at the handover of the image were the then mayor of Mijas, José Liceras Aguilera and, among other authorities, Genoveva Ferrero de Costa, a teacher by profession, who was named caretaker of the Virgin and president of her court of honour.
n this certificate, it as also established that the ‘Virgen de la Inmaculada’ would henceforth be the patron saint of the district
of Valtocado, whose feast day was to be held on the third Sunday in April.
The manuscript also included a series of requests that the neighbours of this district made to the local authorities, such as a medical service, a first aid post, their own cemetery, new roads and a postman service.

Mijas will host one of
the two semi-finals of the 11th Costa del Sol ‘Espetos’ Competition
Ed. Dept. The Mijas Tourist Office was the venue for the official presentation on Tuesday, 22nd of April, of one of the semi-finals of the XI ‘Espetos’ (skewered sardines) Competition, a major gastronomic event on the Costa del Sol which this year will feature an important new addition: the celebration of two semifinals, one in the eastern part and the other in the western part, Mijas being chosen to host the latter.
The western semi-final will take place on Saturday 24th of May, from 18:00 to 00:00 hours, at the Torreón beach in La Cala, and will include the participation of ‘espeteros’ (sardine roasters) from municipalities such as Manilva, Estepona, Marbella, Mijas, Benalmádena and Torremolinos, with a jury made up of gastronomy experts. In addition to the professional competition, there will be a large public ‘espetada’ (sardine feast), live music and bar service, making it a festive event.
The president of the Circle of Entrepreneurs in Mijas, Adolfo Triguero, emphasised that “this year we will have 12 semi-finalists

who assess family’s situation and decide who needs this break”, The Ronald McDonald House has already selected its first five families, all of them with sons and daughters in the process of recovery from an illness, “and they are truly grateful because they really need this break”, said the head of communications at the Ronald McDonald House Malaga, Paula Olmo

For his part, the councillor for Tourism, Francisco Jerez (VOX), stressed that “it is an honour for Mijas to be part of this initiative, which highlights the value of our most authentic gastronomy. Jerez also stressed the importance of preserving the local culinary heritage: “We are living in a time of great gastronomic richness and diversity, in which innovative proposals coexist with others that are deeply rooted”.
Ed. Dept. The Senior Citizens Department announced on Wednesday 23rd of April, that the Civil Guard will hold a series of talks to the elderly of the municipality aimed at preventing and improving the safety of the group under the name ‘Plan Mayor Seguridad’ (Greater Security Plan). The talks will take place in the centres for active participation in the municipality during the second week of May.
The aim of this initiative is to improve awareness of security risks that affect them, such as mis-
treatment, theft around banks, scams, purse snatching and online fraud, among others.
“What we want is that our seniors know all the tools available to them and to be able to quickly identify a crime. That is why we are grateful to the Civil Guard for this initiative which, for the first time, is being carried out in Mijas”, explained the councillor
for the area, Silvia Marín (PP). The various talks will provide safety advice across multiple situations. For instance, if someone falls victim to a crime, they are advised to remain calm, look for details details that could help identify the perpetrator, contact the Civil Guard or Police, report the theft of cards and cheques to their bank as soon as possible, and avoid resisting if targeted in a robbery, among other recommendations.

The roof of the Las Lagunas pool is to

to its serious deficiencies
The Town Hall claims that reports from the Fire Department and Infrastructure had already warned of the need to implement the change back in 2022
Editorial Department
The Mijas Town Hall, through the Sports Department, has announced that the complete replacement of the roof of the Las Lagunas swimming pool will be put out to tender. This decision, explains the government team, was made after confirming the poor condition of the facility “due to the lack of preventive maintenance that the municipal facility has undergone in recent years”. The Sports Department announced on April 11th that the

Las Lagunas pool would remain closed during Holy Week for a technical inspection of the roofs. Following these inspections, it has been determined that a complete replacement of the roofs is necessary, “in order to safeguard the physical integrity of both workers and users,” as
recognised by the councillor for the department, Mari Francis Alarcón (PP).
This decision has been made following reports prepared by the Fire Department and the head of the Infrastructure and Works Department. In the Fire Department’s report, dated April 16th, and after visiting the facilities the day before, it is noted that “several years ago, two nets were installed, one more resistant to prevent the possible collapse of structural elements inside the pool, and the other with smaller holes to prevent the rust from falling”. As a result, the report reminds that the department had already intervened on the 14th of April 2022 due to two metal sheets that had lifted from the roof, and a second intervention took place on the 24th of June 2023 to provide provisional stabilization of an iron bar in the

basketball court’s structure. The report also makes it clear that rust remains are visible on the protective mesh, having fallen from the roof. Based on all of this, it records the “poor condition of the pool’s roof.”
Together with the report issued by the Fire Department, the report from the Infrastructures and Works service concludes that there has been “a lack of preventive maintenance at the facilities that have led to their current condition”. It also recalls that there is a previous report, dated 31st of May 2022, which warned of the need for a complete replacement of the pool roof “due to the lack of maintenance and conservation of the roofs of these sports facilities, as well as the need to address water ingress issues and improve energy efficiency to continue with the use for which they are intended”.
In addition to this, there is a report issued by the company that provides services at the swimming pool, which reinforces these same conclusions and points out that this situation means that compliance with the regulations on labour risk prevention can not be guaranteed.
J.P. On the 1st of May, International Workers’ Day, the Plaza del Torreón in La Cala de Mijas will once again be the setting for the traditional ‘sardinada’ (Sardine Feast), which in this edition will distribute more than 600 kilos of sardines among the public.
The event will start at 12:00 hours. This was announced on Thursday 24th by the councillor for Festivities, Silvia Marín (PP), who encouraged neighbours and visitors to take part on a day in which there will also be live music in the large marquee that will be set up in
the square. In fact, concerts are planned by the musical groups Alboreá and Radio 80, whose performances will begin at 13:30. A total of 18 ‘espeteros’ (sardine roasters), a job traditionally carried out by workers from the Operational Services Department, will be in charge of preparing this typical Malaga delicacy and will represent one of the most characteristic images of the 1st of May in Mijas. In addition, there will also be a bar service run by the La Cala Youth Association, which will offer other tastings and drinks at popular prices.
