OF OPPORTUNITIES A SHOWCASE Opportunities its I Training and Job MIJAS CELEBRATES Fair
The main objective of the I Training and Job Opportunities Fair (FDEFOL) held at the Centro Andaluz de Formación Integral de las Industrias del Ocio in Mijas (CIOMijas) is to directly connect companies looking for employees with people who are out of work. The event was inaugurated on Wednesday 26th by the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), the territorial delegate of Employment of the Junta de Andalucía, Carmen Sánchez, and the councillor for Economic Development in Mijas, Juan Carlos Maldonado (PMP).
“What we want is that there is always a connection between
employment and training and that all Mijeños have the opportunity to be always training, but also the opportunity of having a job in the municipality that allows them to live with the dignity that everyone deserves”, said the mayoress.
Training and employment
The aim of this fair is to provide a meeting point between companies and people actively seeking employment, encouraging the creation of job opportunities and professional development in the municipality. “The idea is to offer a showcase of opportunities. There are many companies here that need to recruit people who are interested in working and many training companies that need students to train and then offer their services to the
labour market. An increasingly changing and competitive labour market that needs qualified and
trained people”, said Sánchez.
For this first edition of the fair, 31 entities have participated, including administrations such as the Chamber of Commerce of Malaga and the Subdelegation of Defence. In addition, there were hotels, social groups, service companies and training academies. Some 200 people attended.
“The truth is that the fair is being a success and I have to thank the thirty entities and companies that have participated in this first fair of training and opportunities because the employers themselves have thanked the Town Hall for this initiative, because for them it is a direct vehicle to recruit those profiles that are in demand in their company”, said Maldonado.

In an increasingly competitive market, many young students are training to face the future with optimism. Alejandro M. Luque and Álvaro Ruiz are students of the Mitur training programme.
“This fair is quite good, I have visited all the stands, I am a tourism student and here there are offers for all areas”, said Luque. Ruiz agreed: “When looking for a job, I think that many times we get obsessed with looking for a specific job and in this type of fair you have the opportunity to see more options”. “It is an important day for CIOMijas and we are proud to host this fair, because we are a training centre and training for employment is our ultimate goal”, said the director of CIOMijas, Raquel Hidalgo
UNEMPLOYMENT in Mijas
The area of Economic Development in Mijas has promoted the first edition of this FDEFOL. In addition to the stands, the programme was completed with a series of presentations and round tables on topics such as ‘Your employability, your future: attitudes vs. aptitudes’, ‘New paradigm in vocational training: Dual training’; ‘Artificial intelligence and new job opportunities’ and ‘Job orientation with UAS/Drones’.

The Employment delegate stressed that “Mijas is the fourth municipality in Malaga with the highest level of employment, currently with 24,929 people affiliated to the Social Security, however, it also has more than 6,000 unemployed, and although unemployment has been reduced by 8% compared to the previous year, we must do everything possible to continue to reduce this figure”.
According to municipal sources, it should be remembered that, according to the Andalusian Institute of Statistics and Cartography, the self-employed in Andalusia represent 16.6% of the total number of affiliations. By provinces, this percentage is highest in Malaga (19.3%). Among the municipalities with more than 10,000 affiliations, 19 have a percentage of selfemployed workers above 20%.
Mijas is in second place with the highest percentage of selfemployed workers, 31.2%, which represents an increase of 1.4%.
The year 2024 closed with 8,476 self-employed in Mijas, which is why these fairs are beneficial to encourage entrepreneurship and promote job opportunities.

Mata: “Collaboration with the private sector is important to increase employability levels and promote training”
M.L./M.F. “One of the priorities of the Mijas Town Hall is the development of employment promotion policies, so this initiative is aimed specifically at those who want to enter the labour market. We have the collaboration of some thirty entities that are a sample of the rich business sector in our municipality. It is important to highlight the collaboration with the private sector to increase the levels of employability and promote training. This first job fair, which will not be the last, highlights the companies we have and their needs, and connects them with job seekers”, explained the mayoress, who had the oppor-

Maldonado expressed himself along the same lines: “From Fomento de Empleo we are very clear about this, the entrepreneurs are the real generators of employment and the Town Hall has to be that vehicle for growth, together with the private alliance, which makes it possible for the unemployment figures we have to be reduced as much as possible”.
For her part, Sánchez congratulated the Mijas Town Hall for this initiative: “It is a great day for Mijas, for CIOMijas and, above all, for all those people who are loo-
Regarding the unemployment figures in the town, “in Mijas the number of unemployed has decreased compared to February 2024. Last year we were at 6,584 unemployed and now we are at 6,057 unemployed, which means that we are doing something good together”, said the first municipal authority. Mata also added that “within the ranking of self-employed that has grown throughout Andalusia, we are the autonomous community with the highest number of selfemployed, in this past 2024, and Mijas occupies the second position in this growing number of self-employed that are making their way”.

After being postponed due to inclement weather, the ninth edition of the Equestrian Route along the beach will be held, weather permitting, this Saturday 29 of March. It was scheduled for Saturday 22nd of March, but the continuous storms forced the postponement.
This path is a unique route in the province of Malaga, which last year 2024 was attended by 325 riders. The Livestock Department of the Mijas Town Hall is once again organising the initiative in collaboration with the Peña Caballista de Mijas.
The original route will be maintained and the journey will start at 09:30 hours from the booth of the Peña Caballista de Mijas located in the park El Esparragal in Las Lagunas. From there, the riders will go through different parts of the municipality, regrouping on the plain in front of the El Chaparral school at around 11:00 hours, before reaching the beach of La Cala at approximately 12:30 hours, where the horses will ride for about an hour by the sea. The day will end in Los Olivos Park at around 15:00 hours, where there will be a social gathering with a meal, flamenco singing and dancing...
An event of interest
The organisation points out that people from all over the world participate in this route, this year there are even riders from Madrid, interested in the event and who will stay in Mijas, bring their horses and participate with them on the beach, because it is something
very attractive, they said.
Mijas is one of the municipalities in Andalusia with the strongest links to the world of horses, with more than 2,300 registered

horses. The organisers have indicated that if any new developments take place they will keep those interested informed.
During the presentation, the councillor for Livestock, Eloy Belmonte (Vox), stressed the importance of this activity, which has become one of the most important in the equestrian field in Malaga.
“It is the most important route in Mijas and the one that has made
us known abroad”, he stressed. “Every year it grows in participation and is a unique event in the province, attracting riders from all over Andalusia and even from other parts of Spain”.
Belmonte pointed out that “it is a unique experience because on the same route you cross the countryside, the city and the beach, and then we finish with a gathering where gastronomy and flamenco also play an essential role”. “The most eagerly awaited stretch is the walk along the beach because it is something exceptional that you can’t do at any time of the year”, he added.
The councillor pointed out that “we will have an ambulance, Local Police officers to regulate traffic, as well as the support of Civil Protection volunteers and an emergency vet in case anything happens along the way, and a farrier from the peña”.

Week Proclamation
The event will be on Saturday 29th, at 20:30, in the parish of the Inmaculada Concepción
C.M. After the presentation of the official Holy Week poster on Saturday 15th of March, the church of the Inmaculada Concepción in Mijas Pueblo will once again be the setting this Saturday 29th for one of the most awaited moments of Lent: the proclamation of the big days, which this year will be given by María de la Peña Leiva in an act that will start at 20:00 hours.
Linked to the Brotherhood of the Santo Entierro (Holy Burial), of which she has been acting president since last year, María de la Peña was born in the village on the 17th of July 1974. In 1986 dressed in a ‘Mantilla’, she took part in the procession of this brotherhood and has belonged to it since it was founded.
She has also been a sister of the Archconfraternity of the Dulce Nombre de Jesús Nazareno y María Santísima de los Dolores, also since she was a teenager, although she has only paraded with it on two occasions, in 1991 dressed in mantilla and later as a Nazareno with her daughter.
With the Santo Entierro, in which she has also held the position of secretary, this year she will parade dressed in mantilla with the parish priest, Hermán Marcel Lunar, as she is acting president, although in previous years she has done so, as well as in mantilla, behind the throne as a member of the Mijas Municipal Music Band.
She has been a member of this musical group since 2018 playing the flute and has participated in other processions
in Mijas, specifically in the processions of Palm Sunday, Holy Wednesday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday, as well as in the procession of the patron saint, the Virgen de la Peña, which takes place every September 8th.
Some years she has also played with the band on Friday of Sorrows in the transfer of the statues of the Archconfraternity of the Nazarene and in processions in towns such as Los Barrios, Fatima and the capital of Malaga.
Catechist since 2015
Married and mother of two children aged 20 and 15, María de la Peña Leiva has been a catechist since 2015 in Mijas Pueblo, where she has been running a churros and fritters stall in the Plaza de la Constitución every day in summer and on Sundays in winter for 13 years, something her mother also did for 23 years.

The Town Hall is focusing its efforts on the maintenance and conservation of the coastline after the storms, which have affected several beaches, including El Charcón, where, as the councillor for this area, Daniel Gómez Teruel (PP), pointed out, “we are going to add 3,000 cubic metres of sand to ensure it is in perfect condition”. Sand is also being added to beaches such as El Bombo, La Luna and El Ejido. The work is being carried out by the Departments of Operational Services, Beaches, Basic Income and the General Directorate for the Coast and the Sea. “In El Bombo, three specialised machines are working, which belong to the ministrg”, explained Gómez Teruel on Thursday 27th, who clarified that “this winter a significant amount of sand was brought in, as a lot was lost on this beach last year”.
In addition to this action, algae is also being removed from the coast, which this year has arrived earlier in Mijas. “We are cleaning the coastline of algae on a daily basis, it

SCULPTURE AND FLAMENCO
Ceramics and dance: an impossible combination that works out well
F.M.R./C.B. What happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable element? Usually it’s a real disaster. However, neighbour Anette Skou and dancer Victor Rojas succeeded in this challenge of their own making. The story is simple: since the 7th of March, the Danish artist has been offering in the La Cala Cultural Centre an exhibition of ceramic sculptures in which she has invested more than two years, entitled ‘Ana’s World’. After receiving a large number of visitors, on Thursday 27th a party was held to close the exhibition in a big way. A guided tour in Spanish and English took place in
the exhibition hall, which brought the attendees closer to the artist’s work and served to reveal some of the most unknown details of her pieces.
But the highlight of the meeting was when Rojas put flamenco at the feet of Skou’s figures with a performance entitled ‘Dance between sculptures’ that left no one indifferent.
The closing ceremony was attended by a large number of people, including visitors who were unable to attend the inauguration and took advantage of this last opportunity. Anette expressed her satisfaction: “It was a won-

derful experience, Victor’s performance added a special touch. His dancing among my sculptures was unique, and people were delighted”.
For his part, Rojas, who performed sevillanas and bulerías, highlighted the importance of uniting different arts, as he thought it was “super original to combine flamenco with ceramics and clay. It is a way of reaching a different kind of public and showing the value of these disciplines”.
A display of reflection
During the exhibition, visitors were able to see the 28 sculptures. Each one of these pieces is charged with symbolism and emotions, dealing with topics such as the relationship between man and nature, stories and characters, and issues such as gender violence.
In addition, permeable concrete flooring and equipment for selective waste collection have been purchased.

Last Tuesday 25th, the Crime Prevention and Dissemination of Mediation in Education programme was presented at IES Villa de Mijas (Mijas Pueblo), with the presence of the territorial delegate of Justice, Local Administration and Public Function in Malaga, Teresa Pardo, and the territorial delegate of Educational Development and Vocational Training, Miguel Briones
This new prevention programme is being developed by the Diagrama Foundation in Andalusia and is aimed at young secondary school students from educational centres in the eight provinces. It will run for five years.
Consequences of a crime
According to Pardo, “it is absolutely essential for minors to be aware of the act, the consequences and the scope of each of their actions, and to know where the limit between a tolerated attitude and a crime may be. This is the work on knowledge and crime prevention. Young people must know that their misbehaviour can be criminalised and, therefore, they can be involved in juvenile court proceedings, as foreseen by the law, and be setenced. This can include deprivation of liberty in a youth custody centre, an open regime centre or community service”.
These talks inform minors about which behaviours may constitute a crime and therefore

The staging features a large cast of actors and actresses as well as live music, which means about twenty artists on the stage of the Manuel España Theatre.
This is not the first time that this cultural association has collaborated with Afesol, in fact, it has already offered other performances for this group as well as for others. “We do solidarity plays for associations, groups and brotherhoods. The play
At the presentation of this cultural event, the story told by Federico García Lorca in this play was recalled: “It is about a marriage of convenience, in which a very young woman marries an old man. At the beginning she is very dynamic and fanciful, always flirting with others, until her husband gets tired of her, of the fights and of hearing people talk about them, so he leaves. It is then that she realises what she had and misses him very much. One day he appears and she realises that she loved him”, said Isla González , the main actress who plays the cobbler’s wife. “I play the cobbler”, said the main actor, Antonio Coca , who added that “it is a play that is very popular and we have already performed it in many places in the province and in Andalusia and we want to close the show here in Las Lagunas de Mijas, which would be the seventh performance, it has had a very successful run”. He also added that the play features “live music”.

The talk was given by Francisco Ureña, who coordinates the Asociación por la Recuperación del Bosque Autóctono (ARBA) in Málaga. Ureña spoke about the reforestation activities in the mountains that his association has carried out over the last two years. The coordinator of the association from Mijas, Juan Jesús Alarcón, valued the vital function of the forests, “which buffer rainfall, retain more water, prevent erosion of the land, produce oxygen, etc.”. Ecologists in Action also propose to start new plantations in the forest in Mijas from autumn onwards, with the idea that seeds can easily sprout during the winter.
