Acknowledgement to chefs from Mijas

The positioning of Mijas as a gastronomic destination has been reinforced by the recent recognition of five of its chefs among the 25 best in Andalusia according to the All Stars Group. They are Esteban Sedeño, from CoNFuSioN; Fran Peinado, from Alboka; Lupe Rodríguez, from El Panal de la Reina; Mathew Lee, from Mardi Group; and Salvio Cantón, from La Catedral. Five chefs from Mijas that become part of the group of the Red Jackets in a special edition, on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the All Stars Group, which recognizes the career, commitment to the product, gastronomic tradition, innovation, values of companionship and customer service.

For this reason, on Monday 17th they visited the Mijas Town Hall to share with the mayoress, Ana Mata (PP), such a valuable recognition. Mata said that “it is a pride as mayoress that Mijas has these five professionals. The gastronomic offer of Mijas is very rich and is endorsed by great professionals. Recognitions such as this Red Jacket come to reinforce the work carried out by all of them who are an essential asset for our municipality”.

For his part, the honorary president of the All Stars Group, Ángel Marcos, stated that this initiative “rewards the work of these people who take the name of Mijas to the top in the gastronomic field. They are professionals who ensure absolute honesty, the best experience for customers and work with local products, promoting the municipality as a gourmet destination”.

Five award winners

Esteban Sedeño, a benchmark in Mijas with his two restaurants CoNFuSioN and In the Beach, as spokesman for his colleagues, was “very grateful for this visit to the Town Hall” and expressed

his satisfaction for “being able to take the gastronomy of Mijas to the place it deserves”. “We are not going to set limits,” he added, “we are doing what no one has dared to do, giving importance to the product and the way of doing things”.

From Alboka, Fran Peinado creates trends with a creative and casual cuisine, adapted to the plurality of nationalities that Mijas welcomes. Lupe Rodríguez, at the head of El Panal de la Reina, is a benchmark for local cuisine, as well as an example of returning to the origins with its own vegetable garden, protagonist of many of its proposals, and honeycombs, from which they make honey. Mathew Lee is one of the chefs of the moment and, together with Mardi Group, we can find him at Eskina. From La

Born in Australia and based in Mijas, Mathew Lee is a chef in love with Spain and the Costa del Sol. He is a partner and executive chef of the Madi Group, which has several restaurants in the municipality and one in Madrid. In his career we find several professional achievements, such as the Queensland Chef of

the Year (Australia), to which he now adds the Red Jacket of the All Stars group, becoming one of the chefs of the moment. We can currently find him in the Eskina Restaurant in La Cala. A place where you can enjoy authentic Spanish cuisine that fuses tradition and modernity in a warm and cozy atmosphere.

“Cooking is something I have always loved”, said chef Lupe Rodríguez. Thanks to this passion, Rodríguez created El panal de la reina, a family business that is characterised by its low-temperature cooking and the use of local foods, as they have their own vegetable garden with seasonal fruits and vegetables, their fruit trees and their beehives from which they extract honey.

“We have things that are a little different to what we are used to seeing, but everything is made

with a lot of love”, explained Lupe, who also pointed out that “those who visit the restaurant come to a very peaceful atmosphere, where there are no crowds, you can breathe fresh air and there is absolute peace and tranquility, no rush and no stress”. In the menu we find traditio- nal dishes but full of innovations, discovering the real value of the vegetable garden.

This is an emblematic garment of this group created as a Special Edition for its tenth anniversary, given to the 25 best chefs in Andalusia. With it, the career of these professionals is recognised, as well as the gastronomic honesty and commitment that is symbolised through the alliance with Aua Pure Water.

RECOMMENDED

The red Recommended All Stars plaque recognises the excellence of gourmet restaurants and establishments in Andalusia. In total, almost fifty restaurants are already part of the recommended section.

Salvio Cantón

La CatedRal Restaurant

After more than twenty years as a prison officer, Salvio Cantón made a 180 in his life and decided to open his own restaurant: La CatedRal. A business that has been running for six years now in Las Lagunas and that has helped him to position himself as one of the best chefs in Anda-

lusia. “I have loved cooking since I was a little boy and this award was a surprise because we did not expect it, especially in a place such as the Malaga Hotel and Catering Fair (Feria de Hostelería de Málaga), which has so many visitors”, explained Salvio. Through his fusion cuisine he has conquered the palate of many.

“From the beginning we tried to go a little out of the ordinary, fusing traditional, Asian and Mexican cuisine,” said the chef. He also expressed that it is a “pride

that they come to your restaurant and give a good review of what you, with so much sacrifice and effort, do every day”.

Fran Peinado Alboka Gastrobar

Fran Peinado is the fourth generation in the catering industry with a self-taught apprenticeship that led him to train and perfect techniques and elaborations.

Albokagastro began with an innovative idea that, year after year, is gaining confidence changing and evolving. “We like to create a casual cuisine with modern touches and following the pattern of traditional cuisine without moving away from the origin but with our touch of innovation so as not to get bored, as we like to change the menu and always play with our weekly recommendations being versatile in

flavours”.

“First of all, we would like to thank the All Stars group for supporting gastronomy and for considering our restaurant, thereby giving visibility to the work we have been doing for eight years”, and added that “we have a wonderful team focused on a versatile and in-

novative sense, showing different techniques, which is what differentiates us and gives flavor to our dishes, traveling and moving through different cultures, looking for flavors and experiences to give meaning to our cuisine”.

The mayoress, Ana Mata, presents the recommended plaque

Taking advantage of the visit they made to the Town Hall, the restaurants Alboka and El Panal de la Reina were endorsed with the red plaque of ‘Recommended All Stars’. This plaque was presented to them by the mayoress of the municipality, Ana Mata (PP).

Alboka was awarded for “fusing cuisines from around the world in a proposal of great gastronomic value and strong personality, in addition to the modern and elegant décor”, they pointed out.

With regard to El Panal de la Reina, they highlight the use of “seasonal products from their own vegetable garden, as well as honey from their honeycombs. These are special local products used in a cuisine marked by tradition and authenticity”, they concluded.

Esteban Sedeño

With a career spanning several years and passionate about cooking since he was a child, Esteban Sedeño from Mijas has been one of the chefs recognised in these awards thanks to the work he carries out in his two ConFusión restaurants, located in the Mijas Pueblo Retirement Home (Hogar del Jubilado) and in the La Cala Senior Citizens’ Centre.

The initiative consists of offering free holiday accommodation to families facing complex emotional and physical difficulties

C.Martín. ‘Kind Holidays, a charitable programme based on offering ‘holidays with heart, a journey of dreams and wishes fulfilled’, is the evocative charity initiative by the Idiliq Foundation. The aim is to create “lasting memories for those families who face immense challenges”, said the president of the foundation, Juan Miguel Marcos. This project, which consists of “offering free holiday accommodation to families facing emotional and physical difficulties in some of the Idiliq Group’s resorts”, was presented at the Solidarity Space of the 28th Malaga Festival, organised by the Malaga City Council. The initiative of the Idiliq

Foundation, which since 2016 has provided accommodation for more than 2,000 people in the Wyndham, Ramada and Idiliq resorts, was presented by representatives of the foundation and the Mijas Town Hall, represented by the councillor Marco Cortés (PP), as well as volunteers and social groups from the province.

One of them was Scotty Darroch, who explained to the attendees the trauma he suffered after his experience in the British army and how the days of rest at Wyndham Costa del Sol were a lifesaver. Sarah Sea and her son Phoenix, who suffered from infantile neuroaxonal dystrophy, also spent a few days at the resort in Mijas: “each and every person we met at the resort made us feel like family”.

PUBLIC ROADS

in the management of cat colonies Mijas, ‘pioneer’ on the Costa

The Town Hall will allocate 112,000 euros each year to establish a control service that “optimises” theTrap-NeuterReturn protocol

Beatriz Martín

Law 7/2023, of March 28th, on the protection of the rights and welfare of animals, in relation to the colonies of stray cats, establishes that the management of these colonies, consisting of the capture and health control of these animals, their neutering, identification and return to their colony of origin, is a municipal competence. For this reason, the Mijas Town Hall has just awarded the contract for the management of the colonies, for which it will invest a total of 112,771.43 euros per year.

But the Mijas Town Hall, says the councillor for Animal Welfare, Marco Cortés (PP), “goes a step further” and has established in the contract that the successful bidder must geo-reference the existing colonies in the municipality, as well as carry out the assessment of the location, guidelines for the preparation of the location and the training of volunteers from the associations for the proper management of the colonies. To

this end, a report on each colony must be drawn up, containing details of the colony, as well as directing and coordinating with the volunteers and collaborators, the capture and transfer of the cats belonging to the group to be controlled and their return to the colony, the so-called TNR protocol (trap, neuter, return).

It is, according to the councillor, “a comprehensive management, which makes Mijas a pio-

I.P./B.M. In general terms, the Low Emission Zone (LEZ) that the Town Hall is considering implementing in the municipality will only be applied in Mijas Pueblo and will not affect residents nor business owners, who will be able to move around the town centre with any type of vehicle. Pending final approval of the ordinance regulating vehicle access to the village, both residents and business owners would also have two free passes per person to allow entry to family members and workers, regardless of the type of vehicle. In addition, special authorisations would be issued for loading and unloading vehicles and employees working within the LEZ.

The Low Emission Zone is a figure included in the Spanish Government’s Climate Change and Energy Transition Law that must be implemented in municipalities with more than 50,000 inhabitants. Its objective is to improve air quality by reducing motor vehicle emissions into the atmosphere. “It is an EU imposition that should have been implemented in Mijas a long time ago. So what we have done is to draw up a draft ordinance for this Low Emission Zone which has been on public exhibition so that everyone can make allegations and the

proposal can be perfected”, said the councillor for Mobility and Transport, Marco Cortés (PP).

The aim of the government team, once these allegations have been analysed, is to convene a meeting to inform neighbours of the final document, which will then be taken to a plenary session for initial approval. The councillor sent a message of reassurance,

“We will also include in the tender a special vaccine to solve a respiratory disease, a very common problem in all cats, always keeping in mind the welfare of the animal”

neer on the Costa del Sol” in this regard.

A professional process

The concessionaire will also be responsible for the neutering, internal and external deworming, ear tagging, identification by microchip and vaccination (anti-rabies and trivalent) of the animals that are captured before being returned to the place of origin. “This also means that we are going to go further and include in the tender a special vaccine to provide a solution to a respiratory disease, a very common problem in all cats, always bearing in mind the welfare of the animal; we felt it appropriate to include this in the tender”.

assuring that “this zone affects mainly people from outside the municipality, because Mijeños are going to be authorised”. Thus, visitors who do not have a vehicle with a C label (belonging to a category of relatively low emissions) will not be able to drive through the town centre, having to divert to the municipal car park or the quarry of El Puerto. “Nowadays,

The call for the award of ten stalls for the sale of ‘churros’ is now open

Ed. Dept. The Public Roads Department has published the call for the award of authorisations for the installation of stalls to sell churros, fritters and candyfloss.

The call refers to ten stalls distributed among the three urban centres of Mijas and interested individuals or legal entities may submit the required documentation until the 24th of March at 14:00 hours through the entry register of the Town Hall. Only one stall per applicant will be authorised and the authorisations will be for a period of four years.

“The awarding of these ten stalls will be carried out on a competitive basis. This is a service that is in great demand by our neighbours and which favours and promotes commercial activity and citizen coexistence”, said the councillor for Public Roads, Melisa Ceballos (PP).

rental cars usually have this label, so they can travel in any municipality”, said Cortés, who urged neighbours to consult official sources for information.

Draft

He also insisted that this is a draft ordinance. “Once the allegations have been included, it will have to be published, taken to the plenary for initial approval; then comes another period of public exhibition before final approval”, he explained, while detailing that its implementation will be slow in time so that it is as light as possible for all neighbours.

“We will study all the allegations and everything that is good to improve the ordinance because that is what it is all about, to collaborate with each other and listen to the neighbours”, he concluded.

Symbol of faith and rebirth: Holy Week 2025 Mijas already has its poster for

The parish of Inmaculada Concepción hosted on Saturday 15th the presentation of the poster for Holy Week 2025, an event that was organized in collaboration with the brotherhoods from Mijas. The event stood out for its deep connection with the local identity, and was held under the Jubilee of Hope promulgated by Pope Francis. As the mayoress, Ana Mata (PP), said, this is “a poster that perfectly captures what hope is, the hope that all of us who like Holy Week have. Therefore I want to thank all the people who make Holy Week possible, being so special and so unique”.

The poster, designed by Isabel Merino from Mijas Comunicación, was presented by Rosa María Loza Millán, a key figure in the fields of religious brotherhoods and education. Technical engineer in Computer Management and teacher, Rosa María has cultivated a life of faith, being president of the Brotherhood of Nuestra Señora Coronada in Fuengirola and a member of the management committee of the Virgen de la Peña. With emotional words, she recalled her childhood in Mijas and how those roots have been present in her life. “This moment has been very moving. I am proud to do my bit for the faith

On this occasion they had the help of the Autism Charity Food Association. “We usually collaborate with Adimi, we have done it several times. We have contacts with Rotary and we came up with the idea of doing this flamenco festival and
