Mijas is just one step away from reaching 100,000 inhabitants.
The third largest municipality in the province in terms of population, behind the capital and Marbella, had on Thursday 13th, 96,620 inhabitants registered in the census, a figure that is even more impressive when you look back at the past. Mijas has gained more than 60,000 residents in the last three decades, specifically it has gone from having 35,423 residents in 1996, according to the first data available from the National Statistics Institute (INE), to having 96,620 in 2025; in other words, in 29 years it has gained 61,197 inhabitants.
The 33% of
the population in Mijas is of foreign nationality
The Statistics Department of the Mijas Town Hall is responsible for keeping this register up to date. For the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), this department “is essential for the proper functioning of the Town Hall because it is the gateway [for residents]. That is why I have to insist on the importance of registering in the municipality because, in addition to the advantages that this entails and being obligatory, we can determine which services are necessary for the progress of the town”. The Councillor for Statistics, Mario Bravo (PP), also insisted: “it is important, for example, to set up a school where there is a large young population and a retirement home where there is a large elderly population. It is important to know where the majority of citizens live in order to locate services there, organise public transport, build car parks...”. Bravo also emphasised that the number of registered residents determines the funding of the Town Hall. He explained that “each municipality receives approximately

175 euros a year from the State Revenue Share for each person registered in the municipality” and encouraged residents to check whether their details are correct in the census.
The councillor recalled that there are currently between 20,000 and 30,000 people “living in Mijas on a fairly permanent basis and who are not registered on the census”, which is why he made an appeal to register on the census. Mijas today has 96,620 registered residents, of which 47,851 are men and 48,769 women, with the population aged between 45 and 64 being the largest, with 30,417 residents. In addition, there are 63,961 (66.2%) residents of Spanish nationality and the rest, 32,659 (33.8%), foreigners. By area, Mijas Pueblo has remained stable while the stron-
gest growth has been in Las Lagunas, where there are younger couples, and in La Cala, where a large part of the foreign population is concentrated.
In Mijas 726 birth registrations were registered last year, according to the councillor for statistics, Mario Bravo (left) / Beatriz Martín.

Mijas observes a minute’s silence for Lina
She is the last victim of gender violence in Spain and the first in Andalusia in 2025
The Town Hall observed on Wednesday 12th a minute’s silence for the latest victim of gender violence in Spain, Lina , the 48 year old resident of Benalmádena who on Sunday was allegedly murdered by her husband, who then also set fire to the house.
The victim, the second of this 2025 and the first in Andalusia, was the mother of four children,
three of them minors. She had been in the VioGen system for a month but had no protection, after having requested a restraining order in January, which the judge rejected, a fact lamented by the municipal corporation, which condemns this chauvinist murder.
The mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP) said that “we have to continue working on the prevention of violence against women because cases like these show us that we
have to continue to reinforce even more if possible all that attention”. Mata, as councillor also responsible for the area of Family and Equal Opportunities, addressed all women victims: “They should go to the municipal women’s information service, we will help them. We will not leave them alone from a psychological point of view, but also from a legal point of view, which is so important and essential”.
Institutional condemnation
The government team expressed its condemnation of this social scourge. PP councillor Daniel Gómez Teruel said that “on behalf of the Partido Popular, we condemn these acts, which are happening in this society, in the 21st century, something that
The Creamar group will hold its first training day on Saturday 15th
I.P. On Saturday 15th, the first training day of the Creamar Mijas group will take place, which is starting to work after the signing of a collaboration agreement between the Mijas Town Hall and the Aula del Mar Foundation in December. Up to 25 people have joined this new network of volunteers, which was created with the aim of helping to conserve the
marine environment and inform citizens of the importance of our ecosystem. “This first meeting will take place in the La Cala Cultural Centre, at 11:30 hours. It will provide information on some of the functions to be carried out by the volunteers as well as the first activities, one of them on the El Chaparral beach, dedicated to the kentish plover”, said the counci-
llor for the Environment, Marco Cortés (PP).
Creamar will promote workshops on posidonia, a protected species that is very present in the seabed of Mijas. Cortés thanked the interest shown by this group of volunteers, a sign that there are people who are aware of and concerned about their natural environment, “the one we have now and
should not be happening. My deepest condolences to these children who have lost their mother”.
The spokesman for Vox in the Town Hall, Juan Carlos Cuevas Dawson , demanded that the Penal Code be toughened: “We must increase the penalties for murderers and rapists. There is no other way. We have already suffered too many murders. We are in favour of life imprisonment, which is the way women should be protected”.
For her part, Natalia Martínez, PSOE councillor, called for “the union of all institutions and society” to continue eradicating this crime. “We have to continue working as the government of Pedro Sánchez is doing, which has once again renewed its commitment to the State Pact against Gender Violence, with 460 measures to implement protection for victims and their families”.
the one that those who come after us will have in the future”. Volunteers must also be available to take part in emergency situations such as occasional dumping, strandings and guarding protected areas.
ROADS
B.M. The Town Hall informs of a traffic closure on the road from the Costa del Sol Racecourse to El Chaparra. The road will be closed to traffic from Thursday 13th of February until Monday 3rd of March due to roadworks being carried out in this area. The works are part of the plan to upgrade and improve the municipal roads in order to optimise road safety and traffic flow in the area.

The Mijas Foreigners Department offers a wide range of services to residents and tourists alike. It began its activity in 1985 and responds to the foreign population. Organising activities is one of its main focuses; therefore, on Thursday 13th, it presented the activities that make up its programme for the months of February and March.
“What we want is to attend to those who arrived one day as tourists and have stayed as residents; for this we try to make their lives a little easier and we have a helpdesk for those who come to see us, but we also want to go out into the street and organise these types of activities”, said the councillor for the Foreigners’ Department in Mijas, Mario Bravo (PP).

An event that is slowly becoming a tradition in our municipality and in which the elderly of the three centres celebrate this festival with their funniest outfits.
“Throughout the year we prepare a full calendar of activities for our seniors and these festivities are further proof. I encourage everyone to participate and enjoy these events that we are preparing with affection and to come looking forward to having a good time”, explained the councillor who also added that “to attend you don’t need to register anywhere”. Mijas, to
fall in love with
February 14th is Valentine’s Day and some shops and establishments in the municipality are offering special products and services for this day
C.Bejarano / J.Pereaa / C.Martín
According to the Traveler portal, Mijas is among the most romantic villages in Spain. Among the places that stand out are the area of the wall and its gardens, the Barrio Santana and the Hermitage of the Virgen de Peña. The magazine says that the town is one of the places to consider “for a special occasion” and stresses that success is guaranteed. Mijas and Ronda are the only towns in Malaga to appear in this ranking.
Moreover, as the Beatles’ famous song says, “All you need is love” and, in Mijas, we can vouch for the fact that there is love in every corner of the municipality. On February 14th, Valentine’s Day is celebrated,
ROMANTIC evening
and this week we wanted to find out how our shops are preparing for this day.
Valentine’s Day is officially the Day of Love and there are many ways to say I love you. We can say it face to face, through a letter or message, with flowers, preparing a delicious dinner or just spending time with the other person. In Mijas many businesses are ready to help you express this feeling, today we discover some of them.
If you don’t have a partner, it’s OK, Valentine’s Day is also a day to celebrate with friends, family and loved ones. The important thing is to enjoy love in all its forms. So now you know, fall in love in Mijas.
Love has to be cared for and cherished, as well as nurtured, which is why the next stop could be a restaurant decorated with romantic motifs. La Reja Restaurant offers something very romantic: “The food is going to be the same as what we have on the menu because we have a pretty good menu, but we are going to put a photocall at the entrance so that people can take a photo, we are also going to give a little rose and a welcome appetiser to each of the couples”, explained the owner, María de la Peña Moreno
Celebrate love in
A SPECIAL NIGHT A MAGICAL PLACE
Those who want to extend the celebration can do so thanks to businesses such as the Hotel Tamisa, which offers a special night thanks to a package that includes a delicious dinner at its restaurant El Mirador del golf, accompanied by live music, accommodation and use of the wellness area for two people. In addition, the director of the hotel, Casimiro Rodríguez, said that the fact that it is Friday is a very positive thing. “This year the date is very good, as between Friday and Saturday many reservations have been extended for the weekend and the truth is that we are very happy”, said Rodriguez. The dinner menu consists of a starter, a fish and a meat dish, a dessert and a drink from the wine cellar.
MUNICIPAL BUILDINGS
Strolling through the three centres of Mijas, during these days we find the facades of some municipal buildings decorated with hearts and floral arrangements dedicated to love. This is the case of the Folk Museum in Mijas Pueblo, the Manuel España Theatre in Las Lagunas and the Branch Office in La Cala. The mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata, and the councillor of the government team, Daniel Gómez Teruel also enjoyed the romantic image of the Folk Museum
A TREAT for the palate
In one of these establishments, the Sabor a España shop, one of the shop assistants, Pablo Torreblanca, told us that “what we have made for Valentine’s Day are caramel apples in the shape of a rose and grapes. We also have the campaign ‘The month of love’ where we offer biscuits, pistachios and chocolates”. This could be the sweetest way to start the celebration of February 14th.

Those who want to buy a little something in the form of a piece of jewellery for their loved one can also do so. “We have prepared jewellery, decorative items made with crystals and little things that reflect love, romanticism and so on. What sells most at these type of events for couples are rings with diamonds”, explained one of the staf at the Tamisa shop, Isabel Rojas. Isabel Rojas. She also said that “we always have a little discount for residents and some special offers on certain things”.
