Virtual reality in the home care service

Mijas has innovated in the home care service provided by the Social Inclusion area of the Town Hall with the incorporation of therapies with virtual reality headsets that allow users with reduced mobility, for example, to travel to exotic countries, practice sports such as diving and carry out motor skills sessions. Tania, a 33-year-old woman with Huntington’s disease, was the first user of the service provided by the Town Hall to try this therapy developed by the company awarded the contract, BCMGestionArte, which makes Mijas one of the pioneers in integrating this technology into home care / Beatriz Martín. Tourism

Hotel bookings in the town exceeded

50% IN JANUARY

Malaga closed the month with a hotel occupancy rate of 60.58%, over 2% more than in 2024

The Costa del Sol Hotel Entrepreneurs Association (Aehcos) claims that hotel occupancy during the month of January 2025 in our province has finally reached 60.58%. This is slightly higher than the figure recorded during the same period last year, when occupancy stood at 58.23%. As for the visitors’ origin, most of them are international tourists, around 80%, compared to the 20% coming from different parts of Spain. From the sector, they valued ‘positively’ this increase in the number of bookings.

“However, the national tourist has not yet been able to recover the activity level of before the pandemic, probably as a consequence of the socio-economic situation of our country, given that issues such as the increase in

VAT on electricity and fuel have a direct impact on the economy of families. Fortunately, the forecasts for the coming months are positive and we are confident of surpassing the figures obtained in 2024”, explained José Luque, president of Aehcos.

The highest hotel occupancy during January was recorded in Nerja, with 76.91% occupancy followed by Frigiliana-Torrox, with 68%. The third and fourth places in the ranking are occupied by Benalmádena and Mijas with 54.47% and 50.98% respectively. For the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), “these are good figures that confirm that Mijas is a very popular destination and a leader in tourism. We are a complete place, with a huge and varied range of services and leisure activities of excellent quality, which is the result of the exce-

Malaga closed 2024

close to 80% with a hotel occupancy rate

As for Mijas, the municipality obtained one of the best occupancy figures for the month of December, with 53% occupancy

A few weeks ago, Aehcos also took stock of the hotel occupancy recorded in the province of Malaga during 2024, which was 78.14%, almost two points higher than in 2023. In December, occupancy levels exceeded 56% in the province, with Mijas being among the municipalities with the best data, 53.07%, only behind Frigiliana-Torrox (67.77%), Fuengirola (66.12%) and Benal-

llent work carried out by all the agents involved”. For his part, the vice-president of Aehcos in Mijas, Juan Miguel Marcos, pointed out that “from the sector we value these data positively, especially with a view to breaking with seasonality”.

mádena (53.67%).

The modernisation of the hotel industry on the Costa del Sol and the specialised offer of the establishments have led, according to the president of Aehcos, José Luque, to the increase in occupancy, for which he congratulated “the different people responsible for promoting the destination for their efforts and work”.

As for the Average Gross Impact per guest per night of stay there has been a significant decrease compared to last year, since in January 2025 the average was 88.73 euros, compared to 110.54 euros recorded in January 2024.

“The

January are higher than those obtained in the same month last year, so, from the sector we value them positively, especially with a view to breaking with seasonality”

Forecast

Looking ahead to February, Aehcos forecasts an estimated occupancy rate of 73.26%, which would exceed the figure of 70% recorded in February 2024. The majority of visitors, around 65%, are expected to come from the international market, compared to 35% of national tourists. The municipality with the highest expected hotel occupancy is Frigiliana-Torrox, with 83%, followed by Nerja, with 78.31%, Benalmádena with 67.07% and Mijas with an estimated forecast of 64.07%.

As for March, the association forecasts a hotel occupancy rate of 75.47%, a figure very similar to that of March 2024, which stood at 75.10%. In the third month of the year, Frigiliana-Torrox is once again in the lead with an estimated occupancy rate of 81%, and Nerja and Benalmádena repeat in second and third place, with 77.32% and 74.99% occupancy rates, respectively. Mijas would also repeat in fourth place with an estimated occupancy of 69.62%.

The Town hall awards

to local groups grants of more than 63,000 euros

This aid is granted through the Citizen Participation area to groups declared to be of Municipal Public Utility

The Department of Citizen Participation informed on Thursday 6th of the awarding of grants worth 63,027.34 euros to various associations in the municipality. These grants will be used to defray expenses arising from running costs and investments. In 2024, 18 applications were processed, of which 95% of the grants have been awarded.

The aim is to support associations that carry out projects for the benefit of the Mijeños and to promote the development of associations for the defence of the general and sectorial interests of the residents. These are groups declared to be of Municipal Public Utility. The councillor for Citizen Participation, Silvia Marin (PP), said that these grants are important for the functioning of asso-

ciations in Mijas and will always have the support of the Town Hall. “These amounts have been allocated so that they can carry out their projects. The associations are a bridge to the citizens and the Town Hall must continue to help them”, said the councillor.

Use of the subsidies

Among the beneficiaries are neighbourhood associations, animal welfare groups, brotherhoods and clubs. The amounts they have received range from almost 900 euros to 5,000 euros. Moreover, these groups have to meet several requirements to receive these subsidies; one of them is to justify the use of this municipal subsidy, which is why on Thursday 6th they reported on the projects and acquisitions they carried out during 2024 with the amounts paid by the Town Hall. The parish groups and brother-

hoods are very clear about where to invest the aid. “It was spent on flowers, in the procession of the Virgen de la Paz, also in the procession of Holy Week and acts for the May Crosses and for Corpus Christi, for which an altar was made, also with flowers and decorations”, explained Juan Bosco Rivas, a member of the Brotherhood of Jesús Vivo.

Many of the collectives have used the grant to purchase equipment. “We have invested it, among other things, to improve audiovisual capabilities with the purchase of a 75-inch television, a film projector, a resin drying machine for the 3D printing, a camera to control the 3D printer”, said the president of the Mibu association, Antonio Maximiano García

These grants also support the work of the associations in maintaining our culture and traditions.

LEISURE

The Entrerríos Youth Hostel presents its programme

“The collectives are essential to the idiosyncrasy and community life of Mijas. From the government team we care and worry about attending to their needs, because by doing so, we will be contributing to the welfare of the neighbours”

“These amounts have been allocated so that they can carry out their projects, which the representatives of the groups have informed about at this meeting. The associations are a bridge to the citizens and the Town Hall must continue to help them”

“The main objective of this association is to preserve the old dances from Mijas”, explained the president of the Asociación Socio-Cultural Coros y Danzas de Mijas, Carolina Lara. Practically all these groups survive thanks to the fees paid by their members and the financial support they receive from entities such as the Town Hall.

C.Luque. The Entrerríos Youth Hostel is almost ready to open again during the next White Week and in April, May and June to schools. These days the facilities are being prepared before the opening at the end of February. From the 24th to the 28th of February, participants will be able to enjoy holidays in nature. The councillor for the area, Melisa Ceballos (PP), visited the facilities on the Wednesday morning, the 5th. “We are making all the necessary improvements, painting and renovating the gardens. In addition, we have already requested all the staff, for the catering, teachers, healthcare, all the staff that our children need to be perfectly cared for”.

During White Week, special attention will be paid to the environmental theme ‘The keys to nature’. The children will enjoy workshops on nature, cooking, animal care, outdoor activities as well as sports and traditional games. In addition, the Youth Hostel Department will once again host the programme ‘School encounters with nature’, offered by the farm school of Entrerríos. These one-day events will take place between April and June, and are aimed at preschools and primary schools.

This past Tuesday 4th, Mijas was the star of the show at the Martin Carpena Stadium, where Unicaja won its 18th consecutive victory in the Basketball Champions League (BCL), this time beating Rytas Vilnius 92-74 in a great match that was solved in the last quarter. Before and during the game the town was promoted both inside and outside the stadium in front of thousands of basketball fans.

The image of Mijas was projected outside the stadium, in the Unicaja fan zone, and also on the different video scoreboards during the match. The mayoress spoke of the virtues of our town to the entire pavilion and highlighted the role of the first Unicaja women’s team, which is sponsored by the Mijas Town Hall. “We are a benchmark in Andalusia, in Spain, Mijas is one of the municipalities that stands out most in our province”, she said, and stressed that “this perfect pairing between Unicaja and

Mijas means that we are close to a great team”.

For Unicaja, the support of the Town Hall is essential. “For us Mijas is very important, moreover, we have many fans there, and we are very happy because today the match is dedicated to Mijas, which will have a continuous promotion in all our advertising media with activities in the fan zone and during the game”, said the commercial director of Unicaja, José Carlos Gaspar

BRINGING LIFE BACK TO

the Sierra de Mijas

WWF organised together with the Town Hall the third reforestation day of the season in Los Arenales

Third and last reforestation day of the season in the Paraje de Los Arenales by the World Wide Fund for Nature WWF, in collaboration with the Department of the Environment.

‘We had the participation of more than 105 people, who are going to plant seedlings to recover the Sierra de Mijas,’ explained the head of the project, José Carlos Clavijo

“I would like to highlight the perseverance of organisations like WWF, because they have been collaborating for many years to alleviate the effects

of the dramatic fires, and they do the whole circuit. In other words, for a tree to grow, it is not enough just to plant it, you also have to water it”, said Lourdes Burgos (PP).

In addition to volunteers, there were also members of two groups: Fuengirola Scouts and Rotary Club. With the participation of children, WWF also aims to raise awareness among kids from an early age. In this sense, Burgos said that “from the Town Hall we are very happy to see that the new generations are here. There are people from all over the world and of all ages”. On the part of WWF,

they are committed to continue collaborating with the Town Hall. “I encourage all those interested to contact the Environment Department, because we will continue to organise new activities”, added the councillor. In the three WWF repopulation days this season, Clavijo explained, more than a thousand plants will have been planted. It is about sowing the future. This NGO is currently the largest independent international organisation dedicated to the defence of nature and the environment.

CONTEST

Melody, to Eurovision

I.P. She is from Seville but has lived in Mijas for years. On Saturday 1st she was chosen with her song ‘Esa diva’ to represent Spain in the next Eurovision Song Contest: she is the singer Melody. Her performance at the Benidorm Fest stood out for its strength and staging. Melody dedicated her victory to her family and promised to do everything in her power to let all Europe know that there are great voices in Spain. Great voices like hers, who we have known for years in the town. In fact, just a few months ago, she was one of the protagonists of the institutional act of the Day of Andalusia. The artist was also part of the line-up for the Mijas Fair 2024, but the concert had to be cancelled due to rain.

For the mayoress Ana Mata (PP), it is a source of pride to have neighbours like Melody, who lives for music. These months will be intense and hard Fest stood out for of Andalusia. The artist was also

for the singer, but she will surely face them as she has always done, with one of her smiles and with a lot of dedication, which she has been demonstrating all these years to become, little by little, one of the great divas in music.

A few weeks ago, the Department of Works and Infrastructures began the comprehensive refurbishment of Calle Río Darro in Las Lagunas. In addition to modernising all the supply networks, the aim is to improve mobility, all with an investment of 878,202 euros. “The works continue to progress at a good pace, with the aim of improving the existing infrastructure in the streets, as well as achieving a more aesthetic appearance for the area”, explained the mayoress Ana Mata (PP), who added that “we are also making this roundabout which speeds up traffic and determines who has priority and where we have to go”.

The 25 trees

To be specific, the project includes the creation of a new roundabout at the beginning of the street to improve vehicle traffic at the junction of the two branches of the street and the parking area next to the water park. “There will be a roundabout right at the end of the water park, which starts in Calle Río Darro and improves traffic flow between this street, Camino de Molino de Viento, which we already refurbished last year, and the end of Calle Río Darro with El Juncal”, explained

Juan José Torres Trella (PP), councillor for Infrastructures and Works.

Conduits

In addition, the supply and sanitary sewers networks will be replaced and new telephone and electricity networks will be installed to repair possible accidental breaks and in anticipation of the undergrounding of the overhead cables at the crossroads. New luminaires with LED technology will also be installed to reduce

consumption and gas emissions.

“We are going to improve the streets where there are a large number of residents, who also deserve to have their streets remodelled and brought into line with the century in which we live”, said Mata. At the same time, the pavements and roads will be
