Mijas celebrates San Antón, one of its most popular festivities

This tradition, in which animals are blessed, takes place around the hermitage

J.P./C.A. On the morning of Friday the 17th the neighbours of Mijas, mainly those of Osunillas, wake up to the sound of the horn produced when one of the Stewards of San Antón blows the conch shell from the hermitage. A sound that serves to announce the festivity in honour of the saint and whose celebration is one of the most deeply rooted in Mijas. “In the 18th century, some sailors who were about to be shipwrecked on the coast decided to

build this chapel in honour of San Antón, to whom they entrusted themselves, and in 1981, the chapel was rebuilt because it had deteriorated over time and since then San Antón has been celebrated”, said the president of the Stewards, Toñi Barranquero, who explained that “although the story of the shipwreck is not closely related to the animals, they chose San Antón as the patron saint of the Osunillas area”.

Mass will be celebrated at 12:00 noon in the chapel built and afterwards the parish priest of Mijas, Hermán Marcel, will bless the animals for the first time. “It is true that this festivity is only celebrated on one day, but we live it with great joy, with many memories, because it is something that we have been living since we were very young”, said the president of the Stewards.

As always, the stewards of San Antón will hand out ‘callos’ (tripe) to those attending and ‘wheel’ games will be played in the square.

One of the special features of this festival is to throw a ‘chinita’ at the saint to find a partner, but, beware, behind this deep-rooted custom, there is a false belief. “I don’t know why this confusion arose, but girls who want to get married have been coming here to throw the ‘chinita’ at him”, explains Barranquero, who invites all the people from Mijas and the neighbouring municipalities to join in the celebration.

Furthermore, for the Town Hall, the promotion of sport and support for clubs and athletes is essential. Thus, with these subsidies, the Town Hall supports clubs, athletes and families, who play an important role in

promoting the values of sport and physical activity”.

On the 16th of September 2024, the announcement 2024 of Grants to Sports Entities of Mijas to finance the running costs of the year 2023 was published in the Official Gazette of the Province. These grants are awarded through competitive process and prior justification of expenses, this being the second time that this procedure has been used. The Sports Department has already announced that next year there will also be 800,000 euros for subsidies to these entities.

MIJAS JOINS THE CAMPAIGN BeCudecaHeart

The challenge of this initiative is to raise 125,000 euros to care for 2,100 patients this year and the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata, showed the support of the Town Hall, highlighting the solidarity of the neighbours

/ Translation: C. Arroyo cipality will continue to help the foundation.

The number of patients cared for by the Cudeca Foundation has almost doubled in the last decade, from 1,013 to 1,902, in fact, according to the institution’s forecasts, the figure will grow this year by more than 200 patients, so that in 2025 it will exceed 2,100. Therefore, there are 2,100 reasons why the foundation needs our help so that no one is left without the care they need. For this reason, this non-profit association has launched the campaign #SoyCorazónCudeca (#BeCudecaHeart).

The mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata gave her support to the initiative, while highlighting the work that Cudeca’s professionals carry out in the municipality: “If Cudeca did not exist it would have to be invented. It does an incredible job helping hundreds of people in the final phase of their lives, so we are going to do everything we can to ensure that this campaign achieves the best results and helps 211 more patients. We should all have that social responsibility”, explained the mayoress, who also reported that in 2024 the foundation assisted 140 Mijeños. The challenge is to reach 125,000 euros, which is the estimated amount needed to subsidise one home care team per year to assist patients. In 2023, 433,163 people died in Spain (according to the INE), of whom it is estimated that between 300,000 and 350,000 needed palliative care. Of these, only 135,000 received care from specialised team due to the complexity of their situation. In Málaga , people died that year and it is estimated that around needed palliative care. This is why it is important to support Cudeca’s work which focuses on caring for, relieving, accompanying and offering specialised palliative care to patients living in our province, suffering from cancer and other diseases, in advanced and terminal stages, and offering support and comfort to their families.

plant hope in Los Arenales

Around 50 volunteers take part in a new reforestation organised by the WWF collective and the Mijas Town Hall

The area around Los Arenales became an oasis of activity and hope on Sunday 12th with a new repopulation of indigenous vegetation. Around 50 people took part in this initiative, organised by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) in collaboration with the Town Hall, to bring life back to an area affected by a fire. The coordinator of this NGO in Malaga, Claudia Perlini, explained that it is “a site that was affected by a fire a couple of years ago. We let the land rest for a while so that it could recover on its own and now we are starting with the Town Hall and the Environment group to reforest this burnt area with indigenous plants”.

The Environment technician, Juan Luis Vega, explained that the reforestation aims to create a mixed forest with holm oaks and other shrubs such as aladierno, mastic and juniper. This long-term project includes further planting and monitoring operations to ensure that the plants take root and thrive.

The councillor for the environment, Marco Cortés (PP),

The technician Juan Luis Vega gave instructions

expressed his gratitude to “these volunteers who gave their time on a Sunday to take care of nature, which belongs to all of us”.

Solidarity support

The volunteers were also excited. Trinidad Palavecino, one of the participants, said that “we are very happy because I have a friend with whom we always go hiking in the mountains and she heard about this event and as she knows that we like nature and collaborating, she invited

us and we are really excited”. Miguel Taipe, another volunteer, underlined the importance of these actions: “After an area burns down we have to replant more trees for the good of the planet”.

Every entity, institution and person did their bit to care for the environment and raise awareness of its importance. With initiatives like this one, Mijas demonstrates its commitment to nature and the community.

THE MAINTENANCE SERVICE of the gran parque Mijas puts out to tender

This aspect had not been considered by the previous government team, says the local executive

The councillor for Works and Infrastructures of the Mijas Town Hall, Juan José Torres Trella (PP), visited on Monday 13th the works of the so-called Gran Parque, located on the El Ahogadero estate in Las Lagunas, whose works are at 90 percent completion. During his visit, the councillor reported that the Mijas Town Hall has put out to tender the maintenance service for this new green and leisure area. An aspect which, Trella stressed, had not been considered by the previous government team which, in 2023, promoted this initiative.

“We are talking about the comprehensive maintenance of the park, in terms of gardening, cleaning, conservation of the facilities, lighting of the whole area, maintenance of the transformation centres and the water engines, without forgetting the whole security system, which is very necessary, due to the extension of this park, which is around 270,000 square metres”, explained the councillor, adding

that “it is a job that we have had to do from scratch because the previous government team had not foreseen it, despite its importance”.

Regarding this maintenance contract, the head of Works and Infrastructures pointed out that it will cost three million euros a year, and will last for three years, “although as time progresses, the government team will study the way to make concessions, either fully or partially, so that these maintenance costs are lower, as each concession will be responsible for maintaining its corresponding service or area”.

Changes to the initial project of the Gran Parque Trella also pointed out some of the changes to the initial Gran Parque project. One of them will reduce the water consumption required by this green space, in which more than 2,900 trees are to be planted, “and we have chosen to change the type of trees to others more typical of our Mediterranean climate, such as olive trees, so that water consumption will drop from 1,350 cubic me-

tres per month to just 350”.

Likewise, actions are being carried out to improve the accesses to this park, as in this first phase, the councillor pointed out, “the creation of bridges that had been planned from the area of the cemetery and Venta La Morena is not going to be included”. In this sense, the councillor argued that “what we have done now has been to adapt the entrance road to this park so that access is easier and we have also considered a parking space in the area of the cemetery access, with capacity for more than 1,000 vehicles, something that was not included in the initial project but which is essential, especially if we want many people to come and enjoy this space”.

The work on the Gran Parque de la Costa del Sol could be ready by next May, announced Trella, who also recalled that this new infrastructure will offer large walking areas, children’s play areas, spaces for sports, two lakes and an amphitheatre with seating for more than 1,500 people, among its main attractions.

spaces of Mijas continues

The Parks and Gardens staff have also been working these days to improve the ‘Ana Gámez’ crossing and one of the entrances to Avenida de Mijas

The Parks and Gardens Department has started the year with important actions focused on the recovery and maintenance of the green areas of Mijas. One of them has involved the pruning of around twenty ficus trees in Calle Río Darro in Las Lagunas, which will be transplanted in the next few days to the Gran Parque. Taking advantage of the comprehensive remodelling that is going to be carried out on this road in Las Lagunas, the Department of Parks and Gardens has decided to move these 23 specimens of ficus and albizias to another location which the department considers more suitable: the new Gran Parque. As explained by the councillor of the

department, Daniel Gomez Teruel (PP), “in the Gran Parque these trees will serve to provide shade, moreover, there they will not be as destructive as they have been in this area, as the roots of these trees are

expansive and affect pipes and drainage, however in the Gran Parque they will be able to spread freely, which will also make them larger and leafier”. During his visit, Gómez Teruel thanked the team of
