Different actions will be organised to promote social awareness in caring for the coastline and the seabed

The government team stresses that the commitment of the Mijas Town Hall with the care of the environment ‘is total’ and now, states, that ‘another step forward’ has been taken, since the mayoress of the town, Ana Mata (PP), signed on Tuesday 17th a collaboration agreement with the Foundation Aula del Mar Mediterráneo (FAMM) to promote in the municipality the so-called Red de Protección Marina (Marine Protection Network).

The

municipality will have a group of volunteers to preserve marine ecosystems

This is a plan that the FAMM has been developing with the intention of taking organised, direct, rapid and effective action by environmental volunteers in the face of environmental impacts on the marine environment. It includes the organisation of environmental awareness campaigns and programmes and actions for the restoration of marine and coastal ecosystems and is organised through custody and action groups in a specific geographical area, called Creamar Groups.

Mijas is the third municipality in the province to join this agreement, which includes actions such as, for example, a programme of dissemination, training and citizen participation with the publication of specific informative materials that will culminate in the organisation of a

DURING THE SIGNING OF THE AGREEMENT WITH THE AULA DEL MAR, Ana Mata recalled that, in Mijas, “we have a biodiversity that is invaluable. That is why we have chosen the Aula del Mar Mediterráneo Foundation, which has a long history of awarenessraising and conservation actions, as our great ally when it comes to encouraging care. Not only do we want to preserve our submerged forests, we also want to expand them”. For his part, Juan Antonio López, president of FAMM, pointed out that “Mijas is one

Mijas has posidonia meadows on its coastline with an incalculable ecological value. It is an aquatic plant with similar characteristics to terrestrial plants, with roots, stems and leaves up to one metre long, and serves as a guarantee of biodiversity. In fact, the municipality is catalogued as a Special Conservation Area (ZEC Calahonda, ES6170030). This is the area between Calahonda and the lighthouse ‘Faro de Calaburras’, which translates into more than 1,400 hectares of surface area.

Thanks to the new personnel, the Mijas security force now has a total of 147 police officers

The mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), accompanied by the councillor for Public Safety, Juan Carlos Cuevas Dawson (Vox), presided over the swearing in ceremony of new officers of the Local Police on the morning of Wednesday 18th. Ten new officers joined the local police force, which brings the total number of officers serving in the municipality to 147.

The new officers have joined after obtaining their posts through the open seat system. Subsequently they have participated in a training course at the Institute of Emergencies and Public Safety of Andalusia, as well as internships to complete their training. Having passed the whole process, they are now taking up their duties as local police officers. “A new stage has begun, but with the same enthusiasm as

during these months of training. It’s a dream come true and we have to carry on with it”, said the officer María Ramos after taking up her post. Diego Valencia, also already a member of the Mijas Local Police, agrees with his colleague that “it is a dream come true, the profession I have wanted since I was a child and today it has become a reality. The truth is that being able to share it with family and friends is a source of pride”. Both say that “from now on we will work with great enthusiasm to give the people of Mijas the service they deserve, let’s hope we can live up to it”.

In this respect, the mayoress assured that one of her priorities and those of the government

team is to improve the human and material resources available to the Local Police, as she described this body as essential for the progress of the municipality.

“Being a local police officer is much more than a job, it is a way of life that is based on sacrifice and a vocation for public service, something that goes beyond just keeping a timetable. For this reason, and because I know how dedicated you are, I can only thank you for your choice”, she explained during her speech.

For his part, Cuevas Dawson stressed that the incorporation of these new officers is an important step forward for the security and peace of mind of families in Mijas. “These ten new police officers come to reinforce the daily work already done by our officers, ensuring safety in the streets, in our neighbourhoods and in the daily lives of all Mijeños”, said the councillor.

To conclude, the councillor reaffirmed the “commitment” of the government team with the security of Mijas and stressed that from the area of Public Safety they will continue to work “so that our Local Police can perform their valuable role in the best conditions, because ensuring order and peace of mind for our families is and will remain a priority”.

Both the mayoress and the councillor for Public Safety recalled that the Mijas government team has repeatedly demanded the central government to increase the number of troops in the town.

BOTH ANA MATA AND JUAN CARLOS CUEVAS DAWSON REFERRED TO THE PROVISION OF THE CIVIL GUARD, as well as the means of this force so that they can ensure the safety of the Mijeños “in the best conditions”. “We have a significant lack of resources regarding the State Security Forces and Corps. We only have half the number of Civil Guard personnel that we should have”, said Cuevas Dawson, who added that “we will continue to demand the Ministry to provide us with the Civil Guard we need”. For her part, the mayoress pointed out that “this demand has to be taken into account by the national government, which is responsible for ensuring that Mijas has the troops to guarantee the security we deserve”.

Currently there are approximately 160 officers, the government team believes that this should be reinforced with a hundred more officers.

Christmas time

CHRISTMAS MESSAGE FROM THE MAYORESS OF MIJAS Ana Mata

Good evening, my dear neighbours of Mijas, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for allowing me to enter your homes to wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy 2025. May health, peace, warmth and joy be with you in the new year that we will soon be welcoming.

As I confessed to you just a year ago, it is an immense joy, an honour and an exciting responsibility for me to address you as mayoress of this beautiful and great municipality. I am happy and fortunate to be able to work every day for all ‘Mijeños’ and to do so, moreover, accompanied by a great team. We are guided by love for Mijas, a sense of duty and a firm commitment to promote a future of well-being and prosperity, a future in which the people, you, are the priority.

With just a few days left to say goodbye to 2024, it is time to take stock and look to the future with the perspective of what we have lived and the experience we have gained.

It has been an exciting, intense year with a strong sense of commitment. But the satisfaction of working for Mijas and the absolute conviction that we are on the right path makes me proud and inspires me to welcome 2025 with open arms, knowing that there is nothing more gratifying and beautiful than building a better Mijas together.

As you all know, having a house that is well organised, structured and with an efficient management of resources is absolutely necessary for it to function properly. This is precisely one of the priority tasks on which the government team at the head of the Mijas Town Hall has been working very hard. Because, if we want the outside to work and shine, the inside has to be organised to be able to give the best of itself. This may seem banal at first, but I can assure you that it is essential for the proper functioning of any public institution, and Mijas cannot be less. There is still a long way to go but the foundations of this path of progress and wellbeing are being laid to position Mijas in the place it deserves.

The needs and demands of our neighbours are the ultimate reason for every public servant and worker. As mayoress, that is my maxim. That is why I have made it a priority to address the housing problem. I am aware that there are many young people and families who cannot afford to buy a home, which is why the Town Hall is working to promote the construction of 557 public housing units, both for sale and for rent, which will be the biggest boost to public housing in Mijas in the last two decades. In order to take this step it has been necessary, firstly, to update the Municipal Register of Housing Applicants, an essential requirement to be eligible for one of them, and secondly, to identify the land to be able to carry them out. We are talking about a total of four municipal plots of land totalling almost 36,000 square metres.

In order to make this and other important projects a reality, it is absolutely necessary to have a municipal budget. Without them it is impossible to undertake any kind of action. As was the case last year, Mijas will have accounts for 2025 that safeguard the proper functioning of the Town Hall and that guarantee the investments and projects that are promoted from the different areas. To be transparent with the citizens and for them to know what their taxes are spent on is a clear exercise of rectitude and responsibility. It cannot be otherwise. A town hall without municipal accounts is like a ship without a rudder and Mijas has already left behind the times when it lacked them to settle on the path of stability and integrity.

It is precisely for this reason that the Reglamento Orgánico Municipal (Municipal Organic Regulations) have also been approved, a mandatory tool for all municipalities with a large population like ours and which, until now, has not become a reality.

The same applies to the definitive modification of the Public Employment Offer. With this, we have guaranteed compliance with the European directive which obliges us to stabilise those posts necessary for the municipality.

Without forgetting projects that will be emblematic for Mijas such as the recovery of La Puente, the extension and remodelling of the La Cala football pitch and the refurbishment and extension of the Miguel González Berral municipal auditorium, and of which the first steps have already been taken to make them a reality.

In short, progress with which this Town Hall shows its commitment to Mijas and to all of you. I am convinced that united and with the community feeling that characterises us, we will move forward towards a very positive future full of great moments.

I do not want to go on much longer on an evening that is to share with our loved ones, to remember especially those who are no longer with us and not to forget those who, due to different circumstances, are going through difficult times.

At this point, I would like to make a very special mention to all those affected by the DANA, both those in Valencia and those in other provinces like ours. There is no consolation for what they have lived through, so I can only convey to them the affection of all the neighbours of Mijas. An affection that, once again, has been demonstrated thanks to the great expressions of solidarity that have allowed the aid collected to reach its destination, always with the utmost respect for the instructions of the authorities and institutions in charge of coordinating it.

For all these reasons, giving thanks for all that we have, I can only wish you a very Merry Christmas and may the New Year fill you with joy, health and hope. Good night.

The ‘Certamen de Pastorales Villa de Mijas’, one of the most important events in the province and a pioneer in the celebration of this type of group gatherings, has been declared by the Malaga Provincial Council as a Festival of Tourist Provincial Singularity.

The event is held every December in the Plaza Virgen de la Peña and brings together groups not only from the municipality but also from different parts of Andalusia. The Town Hall stressed on Wednesday 18th that the interest it arouses throughout the province and Andalusia means that many groups want to participate in this unique event every year. The mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), expressed

her satisfaction for this acknowledgement “which is a source of pride for all of us who love Mijas, but especially for our ‘pastorales’”.

Municipal sources recalled that the acknowledgement comes after the mayoress announced her intention to initiate the procedures to obtain this distinction, something that has been a reality since Wednesday morning, the 18th.

For his part, Francisco Salado, president of the supra-municipal institution, stressed that it is “a festival of extraordinary character, which stands out from the ordinary and is elevated to a category that deserves to be highlighted and discovered by citizens who do not yet know about it”.

The announcement comes just a few days before the XXXIX

The Manuel España Theatre hosted on Tuesday 17th the first meeting with the Harena Foundation as part of the activity ‘Mijas with Soul and solidarEDAD’. This entity is an NGO that fights to eradicate loneliness among the elderly through the companionship of other elderly volunteers. The mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), who attended the presentation of the entity, was very interested in the project: “The aim of this programme is to raise awareness of the Harena Foundation but also to call on all social agents, especially the associations that work in our municipality and do exceptional work, and we are going to start working with this unwanted loneliness to prevent a situation that exists”. Being a volunteer You are never too old to be a volunteer, Antonio Parrilla is 81 years old and accompanies seven people: “I believe that the volunteer benefits more than the person who receives your help”.

The elderly who benefit from this companionship are very grateful for the work of the volunteers. Antonia Navarro is one of them, her life has changed completely since she has been accompanied. “We go for a walk, have a drink and chat”, she told us.

In Mijas, Celia Salguero was one of the pioneers in this type of action through the municipal programme ‘Seniors for Seniors’ and has received recognition with the promise that she will continue her work thanks to other volunteers who, we are sure, will carry on her legacy. Solidarity

Solidarity in Mijas

One more week, in the last few days, several entities have developed solidarity actions always for the benefit of groups and entities that need the help of society as a whole. December and January are two months in which solidarity comes to the fore every day, encouraged by the Christmas spirit, although it is true that in Mijas it is a feeling that is constantly cultivated throughout the year. Donations, collections, fundraising, activi-

Numerous local groups are committed every day to helping those most in need, but at this time of year they do their utmost to help

ties for the most disadvantaged... from the Idiliq Foundation whose help never stops, to Soroptimist who is always trying to find ways to help others, to the Red Cross, the Danish Club of Mijas, the members of Rotary Mijas International, and the constant work of the association Nueva Cultura del Desarrollo Social, the groups in Mijas and private en-

tities such as Carrefour coordinate to ensure that their support reaches the maximum number of people and in the best possible way. They have already demonstrated this with the aid provided to the victims of the DANA. But the needs are many, that’s why we are all necessary when it comes to creating a fairer and kinder world for everyone.

She has done it again: Helle Tychsen, a Danish pensioner living in the municipality and who has been collaborating with the Mijas Red Cross for more than 10 years, delivered 183 new toys to the organisation on Tuesday 17th, which will distribute them to children from families in need this Christmas. Tychsen has collected money throughout the year from members, supporters and then bought toys for children between the ages of 1 and 15. “I am very happy that we are able to make this toy donation for another year and I would like to thank everyone who has contributed to this project”. This member of the Danish Club has throughout her life promoted other similar and equally necessary projects in Africa and Greenland.

F.M.R. George y Hortensia Lumby are two members of Rotary Mijas International who during 2024, with the help of friends, have set up and tended a vegetable garden in the grounds of their home so that Adimi users can see first hand how vegetables grow. F.M.R./N.L. In Mijas, 100 families are helped by the municipal food bank, run by the local Red Cross, whose work has become more difficult since it has stopped receiving support from the European Union and relies entirely on private donations and help from local businesses.

Soroptimist International Costa del Sol has been supporting the food bank for many years and this year will prepare a special bag of Christmas gifts. “Imagine having a family with children and relying on the food bank, it must be very difficult and frustrating”, said the president of Soroptimist, Daphne Theunissen. “That’s why we like to

add some sweetness to the holiday season. We can’t do this alone, GM Cash always gives us a good deal. We also receive financial support from the La Cala Lions Club and Reiki Terapias Mijas”.

“As well as participating in the solidarity tables in La Cala, we have been in the Food Co. where we have collected a good amount of food, donated by the customers”. For the association Nueva Cultura del Desarrollo members of soroptimists are preparing a special gift for the children. They are also busy with their Dana Project and “we have already started to support women in Malaga

and Valencia, who have lost their businesses due to the floods and who have told us harrowing stories of what they have had to go through”.

The coordinator of the Spanish Soroptimists clubs, Lene Thygesen, “we have received a substantial donation from the Helene and Bonnik Hansen Foundation, and together with the money we raise at our anniversary celebration and through Soroptimists all over Europe, we have the chance to make a difference”.

The event was attended by the councillor for Social Inclusion in Mijas, Melisa Ceballos (PP) on behalf of Mijas Town Hall.

In addition, they enjoyed Simon’s voice and the most adventurous hit the dance floor.

La Cala Lions donate Christmas cheer to Caritas.-

As every year the La Cala Lions have once again demonstrated their commitment with the most disadvantaged families. On Tuesday 17th, they received in their Charity Shop five people from Caritas for the presentation of the food, drinks and Christmas presents for the children. The presents were donated by the Miraflores Golf Club, which also provided wine, chocolate and goodies; the Ladies at Queen Bee knitting group, who also helped with the shopping for two vulnerable families; and the volunteers and friends of La Cala Lions.
