The Christmas activities programmed by the Festivities and Traditions departament started on Thursday 12th with a meeting of ‘pastorales’ from Mijas at the Peña Flamenca Unión del Cante. The groups Las Lagunas, Virgen de la Paz, Amigos del Camorro, Santiago and La Rosa took part in this meeting of shepherds which, throughout the festivities, will also move to La Cala and Mijas Pueblo, with the celebration of the XXXIX Certamen Villa de Mijas on the 22nd. “It is an important day because Las Lagunas has had a small meeting; it will also move to La Cala. This makes the big event even bigger, because Mijas is the cradle of shepherds”, said one of the promoters of the event, Corro Alarcón.

de Mijas, one step away from being a Festival of Tourist Singularity El Certamen de Pastorales

The mayoress Ana Mata took up the request of the ‘pastorales’ and undertook to initiate the procedures to obtain recognition

Ed. Dep. The Certamen de Pastorales Villa de Mijas, one of the most important events in the province and a pioneer in the celebration of this type of event, is getting closer and closer to being declared a Festival of Provincial Tourist Singularity by the Malaga Provincial Council. The Town Hall began the application process months ago and is expected to receive final approval soon.

The meeting is held every December in the Plaza Virgen de la Peña and brings together groups from different parts of Spain. The interest it arouses throughout the province and Andalusia means that every year many groups want to take part in this unique event.

The mayoress Ana Mata (PP) expressed her satisfaction and pride in the development of the process, “which means

XXXIX CERTAMEN DE PASTORALES VILLA DE MIJAS

The announcement comes just a few days before the XXXIX edition of the meeting, which this year will take place on the 22nd of December, from 12 hours, in the Plaza Virgen de la Peña. The day will be enlivened by 15 groups and, as in previous years, a large number of people are expected to attend. In the 2023 edition, more than 1,500 people participated, making it one of the tourist attractions of Mijas during the Christmas season.

highlighting the tireless work carried out by the groups throughout the year and which culminates in this great event. It is a tradition that must be preserved, and of which we must involve the new generations so that they can appreciate the priceless cultural and human value that it entails”.

For her part, the councillor for Festivities and Traditions, Silvia Marín (PP), described this news as “pleasing” because, she said, “the ‘pastorales’ have been

working for many years and giving identity to Mijas and now they have another achievement”. It was the mayoress herself who echoed the request of the different ‘pastorales’ of the municipality and undertook to initiate the procedures to obtain this distinction. As stated in the explanatory report submitted to the Malaga Provincial Council, “Mijas is recognised as a cradle of ‘pastorales’ due to the abundance and diversity of these groups in the region”.

Mijas issues a proclamation

ON THE USE OF PYROTECHNICS to avoid possible fires

The text also recalls the harm this causes to children, senior citizens and people with autism, as well as to animals

Ed. Dep.

The Town Hall, through the Mayor’s office, has issued a proclamation on pyrotechnics in which it recalls the current regulations on the subject, which prohibit the use of firecrackers and other types of pyrotechnic material as a safety measure to avoid possible fires. It also refers to the prohibition of the sale of this type of product except in duly authorised establishments.

“Any safety measure we take is necessary if we can avoid greater damage. Therefore, I appeal to the responsibility of the Mijeños not to use pyrotechnic products, as they pose a risk that we can easily avoid”

The text expressly states that, according to Royal Decree 989/2015 of October 30th, the use of firecrackers is prohibited in “streets, squares, parks and any public space, except in places specifically authorised for this purpose”. Thus, according to the regulation, the handling of pyrotechnic devices is totally limited, except in the case of municipal authorisation, and in this case, the appropriate precautions must always be taken to avoid “accidents and inconvenience to people on public roads and in public spaces in the municipality”. Similarly, the proclamation calls for civic responsibility and recalls that the use of pyrotechnic products “can cause fear, panic attacks,

SOLIDARITY

anxiety and even hearing loss to particularly sensitive population groups, such as children, elderly people and people with autism, as well as animals”.

Fire

It should be remembered that on New Year’s Eve last year there was a forest fire that affected a total of nine hectares in the area of Las Lomas del Flamenco and Los Pedregales. Apparently, it was the use of firecrackers that caused the incident, which forced the evacuation of several neighbours, a situation that the Town Hall does not want to see repeated. “Any security measure we take is necessary if we can avoid damage. Therefore, I appeal to the responsibility of the Mijeños not to use pyrotechnic products, as they pose a risk that we can avoid”, said the mayoress, Ana Mata (PP).

The academy FAMA surprises with an aerial Christmas show

Thirty-five artists took part in the performance on Monday 9th in La Cala Branch Office Square

M.J.Gómez. ‘Christmas is coming’, with this title the FAMA Academy, directed by Manuela Veronese, offered an original show with which they surprised the public that gathered last Monday 9th, a public holiday, in La Cala Branch Office Square. Thirty-five aerial artists, from 5 to 17 years old, dressed in Christmas costumes, including elves, Santa Claus and reindeer, climbed on the structures set up in the square to “demonstrate how to fly with

hoops and fabric”, explained the director of the academy, who was also in charge of the design and making of the costumes.

For the staging, Veronese had the help of the parents, who lent a hand with the transport and assembly of the structures, and the Foreigners Department of Mijas also collaborated. “We are a big family who wants to create beautiful things for our children”, explained the director of the FAMA Academy. That is what they did, giving shape in the

air to a show that reminded us that Christmas is here.

Nutcracker

The FAMA Academy has prepared a second Christmas show, ‘Cascanueces, ¿otra vez?’, which will take to the stage of the Manuel España Theatre in Las Lagunas on Sunday 15th of December, starting at 17:00 hours. Fifty ballet students from the academy will demonstrate to the Grinch the importance of Christmas, with the help of surprise artists. The performance is for charity, the entrance fee of 7 euros will be donated to Fuensocial.

EVENT

Classical music, the star of the New Year’s Concert in Mijas

C.B./C.A. Mijas will have its own New Year’s Concert by the Malaga Symphony Orchestra, on the 27th of December, at 20:00 hours, at the Manuel España Theatre in Las Lagunas. To discuss all the details of this event, the artistic director of this ensemble, José Luis López, and the councillor for Culture, Juan Carlos Maldonado (PMP) visited the studio of Mijas Communication on Tuesday 10th. This show promises to leave no one indifferent, as it will feature a great programme, “based on two of the best-known musical genres that are deeply rooted in two regions with a long musical tradition, Spain and Vienna”, explained José Luis. Mijas will be lucky enough to enjoy it, although in a more Andalusian version. “It will include well-known Viennese pieces such as ‘The Blue Danube’, ‘The Hunting Polka’ or the waltz from ‘Swan Lake’, and with the

aim of defending our musicalcultural heritage, pieces such as ‘La zarzuela’ will be interspersed between them, as well as the ‘Radetzky March’ to accompany with hand-clapping”, said José Luis.

With this event, the Malaga Symphony Orchestra, comes back to Mijas after the summer event which was a great success, so from Culture they want to continue promoting these activities. “Through classical music we also want to promote Mijas as the municipality that it is, the third in the province of Malaga with high level activities, responding to needs and requests of the neighbours, also do not forget that we also have 46% of foreign population and they really appreciate classical music”, said Maldonado. Classical music joins the cultural offer of Mijas for Christmas with this free show for the whole family.

The Scandinavian furniture shop Zoco Home set up a charity market with the proceeds going to Cudeca. Local artisans and businesses joined in the initiative. “For us it is very important as part of our corporate social responsibility to be able to help foundations such as Cudeca, which helps people in their final days but also children”, said Zoco Home director Alberto García, whose interior design company is working

on the refurbishment of a paediatric space created by Cudeca in Benalmádena, as part of a solidarity action.

Vacancies announced

The BOE of December 10th announced three groups of vacancies, for which the deadline for applications was from December 11th to January 10th. “So far we had always related cancer to adults but it is true that it is affecting more and more children and they are the ones who most need help in every way and Cudeca does a wonderful job which we also support from the Town Hall”, said the councillor for Foreigners, Mario Bravo (PP).

Local products, Scandinavian products, workshops for children and a visit from Father Christmas rounded off an important day where admission was charged at one euro. The Centro Idea space hosted the initiative on Saturday 7th.

celebrate its traditional Christmas party

A.M. Donkey Dreamland held its traditional Christmas party on Sunday 8th to raise funds for the care and maintenance of the donkeys that live in its sanctuary. The event was attended by more than 100 people. One of the main novelties of this year’s edition was the inauguration of a café bar, where attendees could enjoy coffee, tea, mulled wine, chocolate and other products. In addition, visitors enjoyed art workshops and interactive experiences with the rescued donkeys. The event was attended by many volunteers, including Brenda Kaye, who said: “I retired a year ago and now that I have more time, I want to help the

animals because I love them”. The association’s secretary, Montserrat Fábregas, highlighted the role of Jane, a particularly committed volunteer: “Everything she does is out of love for the donkeys and the sanctuary”.

The FEMP authorises Mijas to send the remainder of the donations for those affected by the DANA

Editorial department

Of the 100 tonnes of food and other material that Mijas collected to help the victims of the DANA occurred on the 29th of October, 53 tonnes were still to be sent in the old fire station and in the cleaning warehouse.

The Mijas Town Hall will send 19 tons of food to Valencia these days. It will do it after receiving this week the authorisation to do so from the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP), “which manages the official protocol for the shipment and distribution of the donated material in collaboration in the province of Malaga with the Provincial Council, as well as with Bancosol regarding foodstuffs”, explained the government team. This shipment of 19 tonnes of food will soon be joined by the rest, a total of 34 tonnes of material of various kinds and goods, not including foodstuffs. “The Town Hall has scrupulously followed the protocol of the institutions that manage the shipment and distribution of material donated by citizens

DROUGHT

The Town Hall, which received the communication this week, will send two shipments in the next few days, totalling 53 tonnes, the remainder of the 100 tonnes collected

and groups for the victims of the DANA in Valencia”, said the government team to clarify that it was on November 4th when the Town hall received “a communication” from the FEMP in which they were informed that, due to the great wave of solidarity, donations could not continue to be

sent to Valencia and that these would be made gradually. “In this communication, the Mijas Town Hall was asked to store the donated material waiting for the shipments to the Valencian community to be resumed at a later date”, they added.

The government team wanted

to clarify that Mijas Civil Protection “has been in constant contact with the FEMP waiting to send the material and always in accordance with the indications of the institutions involved both in the province and in Valencia, whose objective has always been that everything collected can be used and delivered correctly to the people who need it most”.

Resumption of collections

They also explained that Civil Protection recently received notice that the collections and deliveries would be resumed after the long weekend of the Immaculate Conception by Bancosol, with whom they are coordinating this shipment of 19 tonnes of food and to which 30 pallets of food were delivered in the first weeks after the catastrophe. In addition, the councillor for Civil Protection, Francisco Jerez (Vox), explained that milk has been sent to the

Extraordinary Drought Commission relaxes water saving measures in the province

It sets the maximum consumption at 200 litres per inhabitant per day in Axarquia, Malaga city and Campo de Gibraltar and 225 in the Western Costa del Sol

I.M./C.A. The Drought Management Commission of the hydrographic demarcation of the Andalusian Mediterranean Basins has agreed to make the saving measures more flexible in some systems in the province of Malaga, as a result of the two almost consecutive episodes of torrential rains, which have produced significant changes in the volumes stored. This commission, chaired by the General Secretary for Water,

Ramiro Angulo, and made up of representatives of the Andalusian Government, users and business organisations, trade unions and ecologists, met online on Thursday 5th to analyse the hydrological situation of the demarcation and to approve measures to increase the guarantee for human supply and mitigate the social, environmental and economic impacts of the drought. Thus, it has been approved to modify the

Mijas Food Bank and the water collected has been sent to Álora, also affected by the DANA, at the request of its mayor. The councillor added that he was “awaiting confirmation from the Valencian authorities in order to organise the delivery of the goods with all the guarantees. The aim is that the aid arrives in an orderly and efficient manner, as the affected population deserves”, he said. Both these foodstuffs and the other materials that will be sent to Valencia come from donations

The Town Hall

has followed the protocol established for shipments to Valencia, which is managed by the FEMP

made by Mijas society after the Town Hall launched, through Civil Protection, a campaign that collected approximately 100 tons of food and various materials and household goods, which, subtracting those initially sent to Bancosol, have been stored in the old fire station and in the FCC warehouse. The government team emphasised that “at all times, the items collected have been well looked after and guarded in both warehouses”.

Unregulated areas

The measures

may be reviewed at the beginning of 2025

measures adopted in the commission held last October. In the case of the Western Costa del Sol, urban water consumption may not exceed 225 litres per inhabitant per day, which is 25 litres more than at present. In Guadalhorce-Limonero

(Malaga) and Viñuela-Axarquia the maximum permitted will increase from 180 litres per person per day to 200. However, in the remaining systems that make up the hydrographical demarcation of the Mediterranean Basins, there are no changes. Thus, Campo de Gibraltar and Cuevas de Almanzora continue with a maximum of 200 litres per person per day, while Rules-Beznar and Beninar remain unrestricted.

For the areas without regulation, there is a change from a situation of exceptional drought with severe shortage to moderate shortage in the Penibetic Mountain Range system between the Guadiaro and Guadalhorce basins, as well as in the Guadalhorce headwaters. Thus, in urban use, the volumes supplied in municipal headwater reservoirs or collective network connections may not exceed 235 litres per inhabitant per day. In the lower basin system of the Guadalhorce river, the volume of water supplied may not exceed 200 litres. For the system of the Guadiaro river basin, no restrictions are set. The agreed measures may be reviewed at the beginning of 2025 depending on the hydrological situation.

The Town Hall is managing the delivery of 19 tonnes of food and 34 tonnes of various materials and goods, totalling 53 tonnes of aid / Archive.
