On Thursday 28th, the Plenary of the Mijas Town Hall unanimously approved a motion urging the national government and the Junta de Andalucia, within its competences, to build a desalination plant in the municipality. The aim is to guarantee the supply of drinking water to the population both for human consumption and for cultivation, taking into account the increase in population expected in the coming years.
The motion was presented by the spokesman for the popular group, Mario Bravo, who spoke about the drought situation in the area, which he described as “cyclical”. “In recent years, droughts have become more intense and more frequent. However, the need for constant supply has increased and the storage capacity has not”, the councillor explained.
For her part, the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), pointed out that the Marbella desalination plant has recently been extended, “although the restrictions that are still in place show that it is not enough to serve the whole region”.
“Now, we have two advantages, the first is that we are by the sea, so we will never lack water, and the second is that we could currently feed the operation of this desalination plant with photovoltaic panels, which would
reduce the cost of this service”, Bravo said.
In this respect, the spokesman for Vox, Juan Carlos Cuevas Dawson, stressed the idea that “the Spanish Government, headed by the PSOE, must assume its responsibility as the competent administration and must finance the execution of this project, which benefits us as residents but also tourism”. On this matter, the PSOE councillor Josele González pointed out that “with the aim of reaching an agreement, from the
In the motion, the PP recalled that, in 2008, the public company Acuamed finalised the proposal to create a new desalination plant with an initial production capacity of 50,000/hm3 per day, contemplating the expansion up to 100,000. Given this situation, the text proposes to update the feasibility report made by the company Acuamed 16 years ago to build a desalination plant in Mijas, adding also the commitment of the Town Hall to offer and give the appropriate and most suitable land to make this new plant a reality.
PSOE we present an amendment [which has been approved] to the initial motion of the PP, with the intention that both the Junta de Andalucía and the state government come to an agreement so that this desalination plant in our municipality becomes a reality as soon as possible”.
In response, the popular spokesman added that “there are also more administrations that could influence the implementation of this desalination plant project, such as Acosol or even the Provincial Council of Málaga,
More than 100 people did their bit in a charity event that raised about 2,000 euros for those affected by the DANA
A.L./C.M. The La Cala Lions Club, with more than 25 years of history in the seaside town, continues to support the victims of the recent storm caused by the DANA. Last Saturday 23rd they organised a charity event at the Legends Showbar in La Cala to raise funds for this cause.

not just the Junta de Andalucía and the central government”. Ciudadanos also supported the proposal, although its spokesman, José Carlos Martín, recalled that, since 2011, Andalusia has had an autonomous canon for water infrastructure that “is hardly being used”, he said, “it is not only important to promote initiatives such as the desalination plant, but also to solve the problem we have with the pipes that transport water, which break day in and day out, so it is also necessary to invest in them”.
The La Cala Lions Club will open the month of December with a new charity activity, the Christmas Market in La Butibamba Park. On Sunday 1st of December, from 11 hours, they will set up a large Christmas market which, according to the vice-president of the club, Sandy Tevendly, “will have 53 stalls selling products that can’t be found in the shops, perfect for Christmas and birthday presents”. The event will last about five hours, admission will be free and, according to Tevendly, “there will be performances for the whole family, and even a visit from Father Christmas, so all
are invited to come along”.
In the reading of the manifesto for the 25N, the Town Hall assures that it will continue with the prevention and coeducation programmes, especially among young people

Last Monday, the Mijas Town Hall joined in the commemoration of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women (25N). The first activity was the reading of a manifesto in the Town Hall by the Mayoress, Ana Mata (PP), who called for an end to this social pandemic and to use all the tools available to achieve this goal, with special emphasis on prevention and awareness. The text recalls that it is the twentieth anniversary of the approval of the ‘Ley Integral contra la Violencia de Género’ (Comprehensive Law against Gender Violence), the result of political consensus
and social pressure from feminist associations. According to the VioGén system in Spain, so far this year and only in Mijas, 286 women have reported their partners or ex-partners for violence against women. “We have 316 women with a restraining order in force and 413 victims continue to be monitored by our security forces”, said Mata, adding that “so far in 2024, the area of Family and Equal Opportunities has also attended a total of 163 women, while the number of queries attended reached 894”.
The spokesperson for the PP municipal group, Mario Bravo, considered that “perhaps we should increase measures to block those men or those people, regardless of their sex, who exer-

cise violence. I think that this is easy to detect in many cases, because someone who is violent towards a woman is also violent in any other aspect of their life”.
Violence on the internet
The manifesto delves into the growth of cases of violence against women through digital media. On this issue, the spokesperson for the Por Mi Pueblo group, Juan Carlos Maldonado, argued that “society must be very alert and aware of this reality, with all possible prevention, just as the police and the justice system must also detect and act with a rapid response, and the same must be done by the administrations”.
Finally, the manifesto shows the Town Hall’s commitment to strengthen institutional coordination, to comply with equality regulations, to stop normalising violence and to develop strategies to identify and act against

Likewise, the Mijas Town Hall is also committed to allocate all the funds that come from the State Pact against Gender Violence to the direct care of victims, “I want to emphasize that Mijas has a very complete service, the Women’s Centre, which protects victims of any sexist situation, supports them and provides them with all kinds of advice”. Likewi-
se, the area of Family and Equal Opportunities will continue to carry out prevention and awareness-raising actions, paying special attention to young people.
‘We have to go much further, we have to take to the streets, we have to say loud and clear that violence against women is killing women just because of that”, said the PSOE municipal councillor, Natalia Martínez

On Tuesday 26th, the fifth edition of the German Cinema Week kicked off in Malaga. Mijas and Torrox have joined this programme and on the afternoon of Wednesday 27th, the assembly hall of the Mijas Town Hall was transformed into a cinema with the aim of hosting one of the programmed films. ‘Wann Wird Es Endlinch Wieder So Wie Es Nie War’ (When will it be again lik it never was before) was the film screened in Mijas. It was one of the nine films programmed within this initiative organised by SUR Deutsche Ausgabe together with the German Consulate in Malaga and the Goethe Institute in Madrid. “The aim of this initiative by Sur in German is to bridge the gap between both cultures”, said the director of Sur Deutsche Ausgabe, Uwe Scheele

and Mijas, in response to the large number of foreign residents in both municipalities. What we want is for the Spanish to get closer to German culture and for the Germans to get closer to us; we have many things in common and many things we can learn from each other and that is why the Mijas Town Hall is taking part”, said the councillor for Foreigners, Mario Bravo (PP).
The German Cinema Week has a wide variety of genres, ranging from comedy to historical and social cinema. “The film is a tragicomedy that describes the life of a child, an only son, who grows up in a psychiatric hospital”, said Scheele.

After five years closed, the Hotel Tamisa Golf reopens its doors. The establishment, located in a strategic location in Camino de Coín next to Mijas Golf, closed its doors in 2019, since then many groups have been setting their eyes on it, but it was the business group Fernando Corral from Salamanca who saw the possibilities of this establishment already on his first visit last April. “We loved the area, we fell in love, especially with the location of the hotel, which seemed incredible to us. Fifteen days later we had the keys and
we were thinking about how and what kind of hotel we wanted and six months later, here we are, happy and very excited about this project”, explained the manager of the hotel, Casimiro Rodríguez, during the during the reopening ceremony on Tuesday 26th.
In just six months, the owners have carried out a comprehensive and express refurbishment in which they have invested 4 million euros.
“For us the important thing is that the staff working here is from Mijas, as well as the companies they have chosen for the refurbishment of the hotel, and that fills us with satisfac-

The scouts are a youth organisation dedicated to the informal education of children and young people through outdoor activities, community projects and the development of practical skills and values. Such groups are very popular in the English speaking community, but in Mijas they are also present thanks to its British residents. One of them, the 1st Fuengirola Scouts group, based in Mijas, visited the Mijas Fire Station on Thursday 21st, where, their leader Jenny Boardman, recalled that “thanks to these meetings, children learn and know that if there is a problem, they have to call the fire brigade and ask for help”.
tion, because it means more jobs in in Mijas, and that the Mijeños have the opportunity to work in a place as wonderful as this”, said the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP).
For his part, the councillor for Tourism, Francisco Jerez (Vox), pointed out that “it means that national investments, not only foreing ones, are realising that there is a future in Mijas, that you can come here to invest”. “It is an idyllic space but also a space that represents our tourist offer, a hotel with golf course”, said the councillor for Tourist Promotion, Juan Carlos Maldonado (PMP).
In addition, with this visit, the 35 youngsters who attended, aged between six and 14, could win one of the famous scout patches that certify that they have acquired a particular skill. One of the young scouts, Piran Boardman, pointed out that this is “one of our big excursions, which is complemented by the one we did to the police station”.
During the activity, the scouts took part in an educational session that included the screening of an training video and detailed explana-
