Mijas minimises the risks of the DANA with the Municipal Emergency Plan
A waterspout floods streets and causes minor incidents such as fallen branches, while in La Cala a tornado causes various damages
NEWS/02-04
Just like the rest of the province, Mijas was on alert throughout Wednesday 13th. The town managed to minimise the possible risks of the DANA thanks to the implementation of the Municipal Emergency Plan. The operation did not let their guard down during all the hours when the red warning for heavy rain was in effect, with 60 people who remained on duty during the night of Wednesday 13th and the early hours of Thursday 14th until all the alerts were lifted. Fortunately, the rains did not produce any notable incidents in Mijas, except for some material damage in the area of La Cala, where there was a tornado. In this sense, the mayoress Ana Mata, highlighted the coordination work between Local Police, Firefighters and Civil Protection and thanked the “collaboration and responsibility of the citizens”, who followed the official recommendations, avoiding unnecessary journeys / Photo: L. The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) raised to red the warning for torrential rain in the capital, Guadalhorce, Costa del Sol and Axarquia, from 3am on Wednesday 13th until midnight of the same day.
PERSONAL INJURIES WERE REPORTED
The mayoress recalled that the Town Hall carries out all kinds of preventive measures on an ongoing basis, such as the cleaning of stream beds, although “it is also necessary for the population to be very alert and to respect the recommendations issued by official bodies, as well as to be on the lookout for any information that may be offered”. In this sense, the councillor for Local Police pointed out that “every warning must be taken very seriously to avoid unnecessary risks”.

In Mijas, the Town Hall’s Emergency Plan was activated from early in the morning, in which the Local Police, Fire Brigade and Civil Protection departments work in coordination with the cooperation of departments such as Operational Services and Street Cleaning.
Local Police, Mijas Fire Brigade and Civil Protection put into operation from the night of Tuesday 12th special units, anticipating the incorporation of more troops on duty to reinforce the staff on Wednesday.
In addition, the DANA meant that the personnel of the Mijas Fire Brigade sent to Valencia had to return to the town, as both, the personal team and the equipment were needed due to the rain forecast in the area. Then, the expedition that was scheduled to leave on Wednesday 13th for Valencia was cancelled That morning, nine personnel were operational in the Mijas Fire Brigade, as well as the special team to deal with any warning of the river overflowing.

Like the rest of the province, Mijas remained on alert throughout the early hours of the morning and throughout the day on Wednesday 13th. The municipal emergency services did not let their guard down during all the hours that the red warning for heavy rain was in force. 60 people remained on duty until the morning of Thursday 14th, when all the weather warnings were deactivated, alert to whatever might happen. Fortunately, there have been no significant incidents in our municipality, with the exception of some material damage in the area of La Cala. In this regard, the Mayoress Ana Mata (PP) highlighted the coordination work between Local Police, Fire and Civil Protection, through the Municipal Emergency Plan and thanked the ‘collaboration and responsibility of the citizens’, who followed the official recommendations, avoiding unnecessary journeys. According to the Red Hidrosur, dependent on the Junta de Andalucía, 68.8 litres per square metre were registered in Mijas on the 13th; the initial forecasts were for up to 150 litres in our area.
One of the effects caused by the DANA in Mijas was a tornado in the La Noria residential area in La Cala. Around midday, a waterspout occurred, an atmospheric phenomenon that is characterised by the fact that it turns into a tornado when it reaches land. It caused considerable material damage to buildings in the area, such as this petrol station on Avenida Mare Nostrum. It also swept away a tree as it passed through Torrenueva, although fortunately no personal injuries were reported.

The mayoress visits some of the areas at risk of flooding
The mayoress followed closely the evolution of the DANA in the city and the rest of the Costa del Sol. During the morning, the mayoress of i as supervised first hand some of the areas with the highest ris of flooding in the municipality, accompanied bythe councillors Juan José Torres Trella (PP) and Francisco Jerez (Vox).
Mata said that, in most cases, “the citizens have acted responsibly in the face of such an unpredictable situation as a DANA” and stated that “the neighbours, now more than ever, are aware of the danger that these adverse conditions can bring”. Mata also went to the centre of La Cala, where the new municipal swimming pool is located, which on the morning of ednesday th began to present problems of lea s, filtrations and waterlogged floors, something that worries us because these are wor s that have not yet been completed or received and that, as soon as the first heavy rains have arrived, have been damaged”.
During this visit, the councillor for Fire and Civil Protection took stock of the prevention actions and Jerez explained that the work carried out until midday was “to inform and give recommendations to the public, especially those living in areas such as Los Cordobeses in La Cala or La Alberquilla, where we know that many residents, as a precaution, have chosen to move to other parts of the municipality, either with family or friends, and have also moved their animals to safer places”.

The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) reported on Thursday 14th that the red warning for torrential rains on the Costa del Sol, Guadalhorce Valley and Axarquia was lifted at 7 hours, thus concluding an hour earlier than expected, and leaving the province of Malaga free of any weather alert. However, during Thursday, the Junta de Andalucía also decided to suspend classes in educational centres, day centres and centres for the disabled and those dependent on the regional administration in the province of Malaga, as well as in the municipalities of the Cuenca del Genil, the capital of
Granada and the coast of Granada, which were also joined by all the centres in the municipalities affected by the orange warning in the provinces of Seville, Cadiz and Huelva.
After the storm, departments such as Operational Services continued to work with the aim of removing everything that the DANA left in its wake. In terms of cleaning, up to 80 workers were busy on Thursday removing sand, mud and other debris accumulated after the rains. Also, from first thing in the morning, the state of the schools was checked, which have reopened their doors today, Friday 15th, just as the municipal sports facilities did on Thursday 14th.

The educational centres have barely suffered any damage as a result of the DANA. The Mijas government team stresses that the fact that the town has not suffered any major damage is due to the preventive work that has been carried out.
The mayoress visited the schools El Olmo and Las Cañadas; in the latter, there was a blockage in a pipe. As for the rest, there have only been some water infiltrations through the roof and through some windows in some schools, incidents that were solved for the back to school on Friday the 15th.

A team of four firefighters from Mijas left last Tuesday 5th to Valencia to collaborate in different tasks in the province most damaged by the DANA at the end of October, coordinated by the Provincial Consortium of Firefighters of Malaga. There, they met with another firefighter from Mijas who was volunteering in a personal capacity and on Saturday 9th they were covered by another team that returned to Mijas in the early hours of Wednesday 13th. Among many other tasks, they did inspection work in several covered car parks in the municipality of Algemesí, also bailing out water in an underpass that connects the centre of this city with the Raval neighbourhood. They were also, for instance, in the municipality of Alfafar, where they checked a car park.

Also noteworthy was the collaboration of Rotary Club member Suvi Kauranen who collected donations and released emergency funds from the club for the victims.
The La Cala de Mijas Lions Club continues to mobilize for the victims and on Saturday 23rd they will celebrate a fundraising night for those affected by the DANA with various musical performances based on 80’s music. Prices range from 15 euros to 20 euros for the VIP area.

The participation of Mijas in the prestigious World Travel Market (WTM) in London has concluded, according to the councillor for Tourism, Francisco Jerez (Vox), who travelled there, with “very positive results and a clear objective: to open the doors of Mijas to new winter tourists who are looking for a welcoming and safe destination with a wide range of services”. In this edition of the WTM, added the councillor, “Mijas takes another step forward in its international positioning strategy, focusing on strategic markets that value the climate, tranquillity and quality experiences that Mijas has to offer”.
Francisco Jerez underlined the “positive impact” of the fair for the municipality and highlighted the attention generated in markets such as the Nordic and Canadian ones. “We have taken this opportunity to approach operators with a high potential and the interest has been remarkable. We saw how the Nordic and Canadian markets recognise Mijas as the ideal destination for winter tourism”, explained the councillor, enthusiastic about the future possibilities that these contacts offer.

stays during the low season due to its mild climate.
Mijas owes a lot to its elders. That is why the Único Beach restaurant in La Cala de Mijas wanted to acknowledge them on Tuesday 12th with a free lunch. This is the third year that they have organised it and with it they want to thank the retirees of the fishing village for the effort they have made throughout their lives: “Arroyo used to do it for many years but they passed the baton to us and the truth is that we are delighted to do it because they are people from La Cala who have been here all their lives, who have maintained the village”, said the owner of the establishment, Isabel Ruiz, who added that in total there were 140 diners who enjoyed entertainment after the lunch and a small Christmas gift.
Canadian tour operators have taken an interest in the municipality’s golf offer, as the location of its courses allows for yearround play.
Particularly encouraging has been, said Jerez, the interest of the Nordic market, focused on long stay programmes for the low season, where Mijas is positioned as a winter retreat. “Mijas attracts a type of visitor who seeks peace and good weather for an extended stay, and our offer is perfectly aligned with these expectations”, added the councillor, who also stressed that the Scandinavian visitor profile coincides with “the Town Hall’s aim on consolidating responsible and quality tourism”.
In addition, the Canadian market was, according to the councillor, interested in the potential of Mijas as a winter golf desti-
nation. “With the wide range of high quality golf courses and the unbeatable climate of Mijas, we managed to capture the interest of Canadian operators who see in our municipality a perfect golf destination for the cold months”, said Jerez.
Mijas’ participation in the WTM has not only allowed the town to capture the attention of new markets, but also to reinforce its presence in the British market, consolidating Mijas as a reference point on the Costa del Sol. “We have strengthened our position in the British market and also explored opportunities to extend the influence of Mijas in other European and North American markets”, concluded Jerez.
The Mijas Town Hall wanted to accompany them on this emotional day and also to acknowledge the work they have done. “They deserve that companies like Único want to thank them for the
