These are days of gathering around a table sharing a tray of ‘buñuelos de viento’ or ‘huesos de santo’, of ordering bouquets and arrangements of carnations or chrysanthemums to visit those who are no longer with us and leave them a memento in the form of a floral arrangement. Traditions that have been passed down from generation to generation and although nowadays they coexist with others from other countries, they continue to maintain their raison d’être in Mijas. “We live in a municipality with more than 150 nationalities but I believe that we must always support what is ours,
our traditions; we cannot lose sight of where we come from and the important days we have in the calendar that represent our culture”, said the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), who visited the bakery Las Torres, in Las Lagunas, and encouraged neighbours to “appreciate local commerce, that commerce that is committed to quality products”.
For the mayoress, “‘Mijas with soul’ aims precisely to support Mijas and its content and that the 1st of November is the day that all families have always spent together remembering our deceased, gathering around a table with

“When the cold weather and rainy days start, people feel like staying at home or going out for a snack, so many traditional sweets that are not usually made during the rest of the year are made, such as ‘buñuelos’, ‘huesos de santo’ and ‘empanadillas’”, explained the co-owner of this business, Francisco González. As All Saints’ Eve approaches, Las Torres bakery gives its display cases a very autumnal look. In Las Lagunas, there is no excuse for not buying a good assortment of traditional products and enjoy the evenings at the end of October with one of its exquisite snacks.
In the heart of sector 31, specifically in Calle Velázquez, Las Torres bakery has the perfect variety of sweets to commemorate All Saints’ Day as in the olden days. “The All Saint’s long weekend is a very important date and the truth is that people are looking for traditional things like ‘roscos de huevo’, ‘pestiños’, ‘borrachuelos’, ‘huesos de santo’...” explained the owner of this establishment, Leticia de Vaca who, as well as offering these traditional recipes, with pastry cream or toasted yolk, also offers more innovative fillings such

The owner of Floristería Iris, Inmaculada Pérez, said that “here in Mijas this tradition is still going on, because I even have clients whose relatives have been cremated and on All Saints’ Day they buy flowers”. She also pointed out that less and less flowers are being purchased on the spot and more and more orders are being placed. Since mid-September, her stall at the municipal market in Mijas Pueblo has been bustling with activity. Most of the flowers come
from Colombia, Ecuador and Holland and, for this reason, orders must be placed at least ten days in advance. “By far the best sellers are carnations, paniculata, roses and chrysanthemums, which was almost forgotten and is now very fashionable”, she pointed out and assured that, as for the orders, “the most popular orders are arrangements for pots, which are more attractive than bouquets”. These days, a large part of the family is involved in the family business. Last year, in just three days, some 400 orders were completed, so all help is welcome.

From the 4th to the 7th of November, London will become the main hub for the international tourism industry. The celebration of the World Travel Market (WTM), one of the most important tourism fairs, will host the main agents, institutions and operators in the sector.
The Mijas Town Hall, through the Tourism Department, attends the event to reinforce its position as one of the strategic destinations not only in the Costa del Sol and Spain, but also in the international market. experience it offers”. With ‘Mijas, as you like it’ as the main line of work, the Town Hall attends this important fair with an agenda of meetings and encounters with different operators to reinforce the positioning of Mijas in the international market.
In this regard, the mayoress of the city, Ana Mata (PP), stressed the importance of international tourists for the municipality, especially the British, whose relevance is beyond doubt. “Mijas is not only a destination, it is a sensation, and it is precisely this evocative and

This is evidenced by the data that, in recent months, the Costa del Sol Hotel Entrepreneurs Association (Aehcos) has been providing and which have placed Mijas as one of the leading destinations in the province of Malaga. In fact, from June to September the average occupancy rate recorded was 90.94%, “data that show all the goodness that define us and in which we must keep working to maintain, improve and strengthen our character as leaders”, said the mayoress.
For his part, the councillor for Tourism, Francisco Jerez (Vox), referred to the important work carried out by the tourist offices in the municipality, “gateway to tourists, to whom they offer an efficient, very professional and attentive service”, as reflected in the statistics and which show that the British market occupies almost 20% of the queries they receive, being the most numerous traveler after the national tourist.

An activity that took place in the Branch Office in La Cala de Mijas to address issues of particular interest to this group.
“One of them is the driving licence, the exchange of the British licence for a Spanish one, especially focused on UK
nationals who are resident here and who drive here for many months during the year”, said the councillor for Foreigners, Mario Bravo (PP). “The aim on this occasion is to explain to British nationals how to exchange their licences at the Traffic Department and how to make an appointment, so we are offering a very practical talk”, said lawyer Victoria Westhead Another of the topics to be discussed was how to obtain a residence card through the
appropriate thing to do. Meanwhile, our mayoress has made available to the authorities of Valencia all the resources that we can share and to demonstrate that the solidarity of the Spanish people, in this case of the Mijeños, is not only in word, but also in deed. For his part, Nathaniel Amos, from FCDO, said that “I am here to explain to the British how the entry and exit system works”. In this way, they were informed of all the alternatives that the law offers them in each case so that they can stay in Spain.
The councillor of the Socialist Municipal Group in Mijas Josele Gonzalez said that “we join the pain of each and every one of these neighbours, of these relatives who are suffering this circumstance. I am convinced that there are many Mijeños who have family in Valencia, many Valencians who live in Mijas, who are suffering first hand from this circumstance. I would also like to send an encouraging message to the sister municipalities: Álora, Cártama, Almogía, Valle de Abdalajís, Villanueva de la Concepción, which have also been tremendously affected by these floods, where we have also had a death in Alhaurín de la Torre”.
The spokesperson for the Ciudadanos Municipal Group, José Carlos Martín , also wanted to show his support for the victims and thank the security forces for the work they are doing: “We would like to send our condolences to all those relatives who, unfortunately, have lost a loved one in these circumstances, to send them our encouragement, to send them our strength and to let them know that, although we are not there, we are with them. Above all, may they have a lot of strength, a lot of courage in such a complicated situation”.

However, due to the natural catastrophe caused by the DANA, which has mainly affected the Valencian people, the PAD leaders have decided to postpone this charity market. As a sign of respect, the event has been postponed until a new date which has not yet been announced. PAD has stated that in a few days they will inform of the new date for the market, with which they periodically raise funds to continue with their social and animal protection work. At this market you can buy clothes, accessories, food... at the same time as informing the curious about the work that PAD carries out and the animal adoptions that can be made.

Idiliq brings back the Smile Mile in aid of the AECC

Before the rain started, last Sunday 27th the Smile Mile took place, the third one organized by the Idiliq Foundation, with the collaboration of the Sports Department of Mijas, in aid of the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC). Idiliq rescues, thus, the Smile Mile, which was held in the vicinity of the Wyndham Grand Costa del Sol, and which had a solidarity purpose, since the funds raised are intended for cancer research.
The president of the Idiliq Foundation, Juan Miguel Marcos, emphasized that “it is a very special day, we are back with this walk. It was a success in the past and that is why we wanted to revive it. We thought of doing it in October, a month in which we do so many actions in favor of the AECC, so this is the perfect finale”. Idiliq decided to resume this solidarity event coinciding with the celebration of its 25th anniversary.

The designer and artist Helen Bellart collaborated in this edition to support Mijas Felina: “I am not a member, but I always try to help with my art and design creations, and all the money raised goes to the association”.
On these tables we find a wide variety of travel items, hair accessories and second-hand clothes, among other options. Charity groups such as the Lions Club, Mijas Felina and Donkey Dreamland often participate in the fundraising initiative. Wietse Haak, a volunteer at Donkey Dreamland, highlighted the importance and interest generated by this event “because there are
many people from England, Iceland and other countries, who really like donkeys and want to make a financial donation”.
One of these visitors was Dani Arroyo, who also appreciated the involvement of the foreign community: ‘Thank God, there are many people here, especially British residents who do a lot for the community”, he explained, adding that “Mi-

A.M. On Sunday, 27th of October, Mijas joined in a very special event: a charity lunch in aid of stray cats, specifically, to help Mijas Felina. This is the fifth consecutive year that this collective organizes this popular solidarity paella, which in its previous edition gathered about 140 people. Manuela Bernardo, secretary of Mijas Felinas, explained that all the proceeds will go to help these felines who need it so much. “Everything will be used to feed them and, above all, to help with veterinary expenses. Clearly it has to be paid for, and it is the association that pays for it since we do not receive subsidies”, said Bernardo.

The paella, both mixed and vegetarian, has become a symbol of solidarity, complemented, on this occasion, by a delicious sponge cake prepared by the volunteers. Among the collaborators was the restaurant where the event was held, Roberto’s in Calahonda. Its chef, Roberto González, explained that “due to lack of time I cannot collaborate in any other way, but we have always had animals at home, so helping them runs in the family”.
This year, in addition to gastronomy, attendees were able to enjoy a market with crafts and a variety of products for cats. Solidarity calendars with pictures of cats were also available.
El Juncal organises a rock concert in aid of PAD and Aristochat

Live music, good atmosphere, bar service and an area where interested attendees could deposit cleaning products for the animal groups PAD (Domestic Animal Shelter) and Aristochat, food for animals and other donations. These were the ingredients of this charity party organised by the El Juncal Neighbourhood Association in the Manuel España Theatre on Friday 25th of October. Ángeles Muñoz, member of the board of directors of the association, said that ‘We knew that these animal groups needed funds. They have no help, almost none, they are already in almost crisis, and we told them that we were going to do something to help them’. This event had the participation of Deja Vu, Rock
Revival and Tributo Rock Band, who performed selflessly. Luis Serrano, a member of Rock Revival, said before their concert that “there is a very good vibe among all the bands to collaborate with these issues”. The animal associations PAD and Aristochat expressed their gratitude because, they say, their work is becoming more complicated every year. This is what Chantal Lancelot, president of Aristochat, said: “We need a lot, every year there is more abandonment, specially of domestic cats and that is a big problem. We get a lot of calls and it’s a pity because I can’t take care of more animals. I care for 200 and we need more donations, more space and more volunteers, something we don’t have’.

It is the sixth popular race ‘Walk against diabetes’, an initiative that, for another year, is organised by the diabetes group of the La Cala Lions Club. The event will take place on the 3rd of November in the seaside town and is part of the World Diabetes Day which is celebrated on the 14th of November. The walk will start at 10 hours from the Plaza del Torreón and from there they will walk along the Coastal Path.
