The international association presented the awards of the third ‘Nurture your Optimism’ contest on Thursday 17th
Report by Cristina Bejarano and Nuria Luque
For the third consecutive year, Soroptimist has awarded the work done by some companies that, according to this group, promote healthy food. On the evening of Thursday 17th of October the Mijas Town Hall hosted the awards ceremony of the third ‘Nourish your Optimism’ contest, which also aims to raise awareness about the improvement of our health, which is increasingly affected by the consumption of fast and plasticised

The president of the collective, Daphne Theunissen , stressed that “little by little, we are not only learning about what we eat but also about how it is produced and about the effects it has on the earth, so, while doing some research on the subject, we thought we should applaud the heroes who are receiving awards here today, as they help us to change our habits and think about what we eat and where each product comes from”.

Women, the Department of Foreigners of Mijas, Justicia Alimentaria, Red Cross, Sabor a Málaga and the Aula del Mar Foundation are collaborating in this competition.
Also present was the councillor for Foreigners of the Mijas Town Hall, Mario Bravo (PP) who pointed out that “it is very easy to get projects off the ground but it is also true that there are some in which you can see the soul of the people who have worked on it and I think Soroptimist has got it right with these awards, giving them to
companies and people who have shown they have soul”. He also wanted to thank this association “for the work they do throughout the year”.
Since June, the group has been collecting proposals from companies and organisations in Malaga, with the following winners in the five categories. In the area of Food Cultivation and Distribution, the award went to the Merkaético Consumer Cooperative; in the next category, Sustainable Production, the award went to the company Maychoco; in the area of Education and Awareness, the work of Bee Garden was recognised; then
Soroptimist awarded the prize to the company Extiercol from Ronda in the area of Innovation and Technology; and finally, the award for Sustainable Restaurant went to the Benalmadena business Sollo Restaurante.
The president also stated that “the idea of this competition is to make everyone stop and think for a moment about what we can do to look after our nutrition and the products we consume”.
Finally, Ali Parandeh, a member of ToastMasters, gave a short speech in which he told a story related to climate change and sustainable development.

Report by B. Martín, J. Perea, M. J. Gómez, C. Martín and C. Arroyo
The Mijas Local Police celebrated on Thursday 17th at the Manuel España Theatre the day of its patron saint, the feast of the archangels San Gabriel, San Rafael and San Miguel, which is commemorated every September 29th. The event was a tribute to their daily work, always aimed at protecting and serving our community, a task that was highlighted by the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), who said:
“They are always there, looking out for any incident that may occur in our municipality and trying to ensure that these incidents remain small and do not go any further”.
Mijas has a police force of 150 officers, who, in coordination with the Civil Guard and other State Forces, work to increase security.
“We should be very proud of all of them. They work in an exemplary manner. They are a reference not only in the province, but also at national level”, said the councillor for Local Police in Mijas, Juan Carlos Cuevas Dawson (Vox).
This year, the number of arrests has increased, as well as the number of regulatory penalties and other operations, making the Mijas police force more efficient. Its chief intendant, Juan Manuel Rosas, wanted to remember other colleagues on this day. During the ceremony, four officers were
I.P./C.M./C.A. On Tuesday 15th, the parish of La Cala hosted a liturgy in honour of Santa Teresa, patron saint of La Cala. The mass was led by the parish priest Juan Baena, who said he lived with great joy this feast “because you can see how people are involved, committed, and for me, as a priest, it is a gift to see that all those present here are happy in our parish and feel that affection for Santa Teresa”. The president of the Santa Teresa Parish Association, Belén Guerra, also feels the affection: “I participate in all the events of Santa Teresa since I came to La Cala 20 years ago because I really like the statue, it moves me and I live this day in a special way”.
Many people came to the church to accompany Santa Teresa. “It is a very important day for the municipality, so much so that it is declared a local holiday”, recalled the mayoess, Ana Mata (PP). The mayoress also said that “thanks to this liturgy we have been able to see many neighbours from La Cala and also, why not, we have thanked Santa Teresa for bringing us the long-awaited rain. We have not been able to enjoy her traditional procession through the streets of the village but we must admit that the water comes in handy these days”.

In addition, the Mijas Music Band played some musical pieces in honour of the patron saint, who was rocked and lifted up inside the church. “The important thing is to protect the statue so that it is not damaged by the water”, said Alfonso Galdeano, bearer of the statue.

The president of Adintre receives
the BRITISH EMPIRE medal
Joyce Gyimah is the founder of this collective, which has been helping people at risk of social exclusion in Mijas and the surrounding area for 23 years
It was this summer when Joyce Gyimah, president of Adintre, received unexpected news from the British Embassy; she had been awarded the Honorary British Empire Medal for her more than 20 years of work supporting homeless and vulnerable people in Mijas and other nearby towns. “I am not good at advertising, I’m just good at working, but they

called us and personally gave me recognition for that work. Every time there is a citizen who has a problem, they come to us and we find them a hotel, take care of them...”, explained the founder of
Adintre during her visit to the studios of Mijas Comunicación.
It has been 23 years since this association began its service in Mijas and the surrounding area, covering basic needs such as food for victims of gender violence, elderly people without resources, children and teenagers from families at risk of exclusion, immigrants, evicted people and people with reduced mobility. “We began by feeding people on the street, those who have no one or nowhere to go. But today Adintre is much more than a soup kitchen or a shower place, there are also people who live in their homes who can’t make ends meet and to whom we give food boxes. We have job orientation workshops, handicraft workshops, Spanish and English classes”, Gyimah said.
Serving more than 1,000 people
In addition, the association has interpreters in different languages and sometimes lends its premises in Fuengirola to groups, such as the Ukrainians living in the area as a result of the war in their country. In total, they serve around 1,000 people from Mijas, Fuengirola and Benalmádena. Adintre is also currently leading a project against illiteracy in Ghana. All this led to this recognition by the British Consulate, which the president of Adintre will officially receive in the coming months.
‘Puente al comercio’ campaign is born
It is aimed at all recently created businesses in the municipality
M.F. A new project for business development is born in Mijas, ‘Puente al comercio’ (Bridge to trade). This is an initiative of the Department of Commerce and Business Development which “aims to unite the Mijas Town Hall with the various traders in the municipality”, said the cou-
ncillor for the area, Juan Carlos Maldonado (PMP), during the presentation on Thursday 17th, at the premises of Pinturas Andalucía in Las Lagunas, the first company interested in participating.
“We could not miss it and we are proud and delighted to host the launch of this project, becau-
“I always thought that nobody had to thank me for what I am doing, but thank God the recognition also helps, it gives me the strength to say ‘what I do is not bad, but I can do even better’. It means a lot to us”, Joyce said. For her, this award is a way to show people “the transparency we have in our work and maybe we can get more people to support us financially”. In this sense, she called on society to collaborate with Adintre. “I ask them to lend us a hand, to help us with our project, which is really beautiful, to put a smile on the face of those who have lost everything; there is no money that can pay for that”, Gyimah concluded.

What do we offer?
Those businesses that join the programme will gain VISIBILITY, PRESENCE AND POSITIONING. In addition, they will be able to attend the networking event planned by the Town Hall, where they will have the opportunity to bring their business closer to potential customers and meet other entrepreneurs in the municipality.
se I believe that at a collaborative level and with regard to relations between the institution and the companies, it is extremely important to strengthen ties”, said the head of Marketing and Communication at Pinturas Andalucía, Manuel Espíritusanto
Strength comes in numbers
Those businesses that join the programme, whose slogan is ‘Cruza con nosotros’ (Cross with us), will gain visibility, presence and positioning for their business. “Mijas has an enormous potential in terms of commerce, but it is true that the commer-

cial habits in some cases are not what we would like from the Town Hall and the traders have also told us so”, added the councillor, who pointed out that there is now “a lot of work” ahead in terms of coordination between the local administration and entrepreneurs. A path “which is not easy”, said Maldonado, adding that the ultimate goal of this initiative “is none other than to give visibility and promotion to our businesses”.
Businesses interested in joining the programme can contact the Department of Employment Promotion of Mijas. “A team
of workers and students of the Employment and Training Programme ‘Mijas Gestiona’, are also part of this project”, explained Maldonado. “All participating businesses will be able to attend a networking event that will be organised by the Town Hall. It will be done through a fair of traders in which, every year, we can value our commercial offer, but we will continue working day by day because it is a matter that requires a lot of effort, a lot of communication with traders and, above all, to be able to squeeze all the potential that Mijas has”, he added.
