Mijas announces the forthcoming award of a

new section of the coastal path

It covers the sections between La Cala and the beach bar El Sheriff and between the restaurant El Faro and Fuengirola

The Mijas Town Hall, through the Infrastructures and Works Department, announced on Wednesday 9th the forthcoming awarding of a 5,300 metre stretch of the Coastal Path, which is divided into two sections: one from the Torreón Square in la Cala and the beach bar El Sheriff, and the other from the El Faro restaurant to Fuengirola.

The project has a total budget of 5,215,030.91 euros, of which 993,000 euros come from unconditional funds from the Malaga Provincial Council, and has a com-

pletion period of six months. The mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), welcomed the announcement and praised the work carried out by the technical staff of the Infrastructure Department to make the project a reality, as the government recalls, “a long-awaited project”: “The journey so far has not been easy but the commitment of this government team to the Coastal Path is firm and resolute. It is a major attraction in the municipality, both for residents and visitors, so our goal is that the entire coastline of Mijas is connected by this path, which is unique and incomparable”.

The drafting of the project to remodel the La

Cala football pitch is out to tender

The budget for drafting the text, which has a deadline of 120 days, is 70,000 euros

Ed. Dep. The Mijas Town Hall, through the Infrastructures and Works Department, has put out to tender the contract for the drafting of the basic and execution project for the extension and remodelling of the football pitch in

La Cala.

With a budget of 70,000 euros (57,851.24 euros without VAT), the objective is to carry out its repair and remodelling, the extension of its annexes and the improvement of energy efficiency. The works will have to be carried out while the pitch is still in use, and accessibility to the pitch will have to be ensured. A deadline of 120 days has been set for the execution of the works.

The mayoress of Mijas, Ana

der for the first time a couple of years ago, but none of the companies that applied wanted to formalise the contract because, according to the local government, “the budget was not in line with real market prices”. Last year it was put out to tender again, once the project had been adapted to market prices, but in the end the company that was awarded the contract gave up, which meant that a new tender had to be issued.

As the councillor for Infrastructures and Works, Juan José Torres Trella (PP), pointed out, “once all these inconveniences have been resolved, the process is in the final phase which will allow us, in a short period of time, to fina-

Mata (PP), declared on Friday 4th that it is “a response to the need to solve the wear and tear of the facilities and to provide it with a complementary infrastructure that fits the reality of the large number of people who make use of this space. For this government team, the commitment to sport is undeniable, which is why we must provide the municipality with infrastructures in accordance with its population density and the important sporting enthusiasm that exists. With this extension and remodelling we are meeting a long-standing request that we are finally going to solve”.

For her part, the councillor for Sports, Mari Francis Alarcón (PP), stressed the need for this intervention, given the state of the pitch and explained that the current stands do not have a covered area ‘which makes it impossible to use them on very sunny or rainy days, hence the importance of building covered stands so that it is not a useless area”.

For the councillor for Town Planning, Lourdes Burgos (PP), “it is an ambitious and very important project for Mijas that seeks to provide greater functionality and aesthetics to a space with a very significant sporting and social importance for the community”.

lly have a company in charge of carrying out the works and that these sections will become a realty”.

Technical details

The councillor recalled that this phase has the available land and favourable sectorial reports, which, as required by the regulations, was carried out before the tender. The project includes a wooden pedestrian path with a free width of three metres, as well as the identification of the affected services, areas to stay and other elements contemplated in the corresponding section between La Cala de Mijas and Fuengirola.

The Town Hall has not yet accepted the new La Cala swimming pool due to defects in the construction work

C.M./I.P. The work on the Olympic swimming pool in La Cala and the multi-purpose building that houses it, which started on February 1st 2021 during the previous term of office, has not yet been accepted by the Mijas Town Hall. The mayoress, Ana Mata (PP), explained that this is due to several flaws that have been detected in the facilities over the past year and after the open day held by the previous government team in October of last year. The mayoress explained that “we have been making ob-

jections to the company about problems that have been found after the execution of the work: damps, problems of water leaks in the pool, windows that cannot be opened and even dirt that has not been removed by the company that carried out the works”. She also stated that since November of last year they have been “demanding” that the construction company resolve all the problems.

NOVEMBER 3RD DIABETES WALK

FOREIGNERS presents its programme of ACTIVITIES FOR AUTUMN

Informative talks, street markets, a British Legion parade and a walk will be the main attractions

The Mijas Foreigners Department announced on Wednesday 9th of October its programme of activities for autumn. These include informative talks for British residents, charity markets, awareness raising activities and a British Legion parade. All of them will take place in La Cala. According to the councillor, Mario Bravo (PP), “of the 96,000 Mijeños, there are 36,000 who were born outside Spain but have decided to stay here to live with us, so from the Department of Foreigners we want to make their lives easier every day”, and added that “this programme could be divided into two parts. One is the legal part so that people from other countries can live with us without any problems, and the other part is to make their lives interesting and attractive. We do the latter for both foreigners and Spaniards”. Finally, the technicians of the department, made an invitation to these events: “we invite all residents, and non-residents in Mijas, to come to our markets, either the solidarity ones we do every month or the PAD market, so that they can buy products and collaborate with the associations that do such a good job in Mijas”, concluded Laura Cordoba

OCTOBER 26TH AND 30TH | NOVEMBER: 27TH AND 30TH

SOLIDARITY TABLES

Solidarity and awareness-raising also have their place in this programme. On the 26th and 30th of October, and on the 27th and 30th of November, that is, the last Wednesday and Saturday of each month, the solidarity tables of the associations will be set up, as usual, in the Branch Office Square from 11 to 14 hours. There we will find representatives of charitable associations whose aim with this activity, in addition to raising funds, is to raise awareness of their work and for those attending to join them as volunteers.

OCTOBER 30TH

TALK FOR BRITISH PEOPLE

On the 30th, the Branch Offices in La Cala de Mijas will also be the venue for another talk, also in English, at 16 hours, which will help British citizens who need it to regularise their situation. The event is organised by the Foreigners Department of the Mijas Town Hall in collaboration with British Lawyer Spain & Abogado en la Red. During the presentation of the event, the lawyer Jorge Postigo explained that “we have a British population in Mijas who could not get their TIE card and who are looking for different options to regularise and have legal documentation, so that they can enjoy what is on offer in Mijas, Malaga, Spain and throughout the country, which is why we are holding this talk to help them”. The event is open to all British residents but to attend it is necessary to register in advance on info@britishlawyerspain.com or by calling 678 826 771.

NOVEMBER 2ND PAD MARKET

One more year, the diabetes group of the La Cala Lions Club has organised its Diabetes Walk, and that makes six. The need to raise awareness about diabetes has made this event a must. This year it will take place on Sunday 3rd of November as part of the World Diabetes Day which is celebrated on the 14th of November. At 10 hours the walk will set off from the Torreón Square to enjoy a stroll along the Coastal Path. During the morning there will also be stands from other associations, free glucose tests, musical performances, a zumba class and much more.

On the 2nd of November, the Protectora de Animales Domésticos will be looking for help to continue helping animals, which unfortunately, often end up abandoned and have to be rescued by this shelter. The association will set up its autumn market from 11 to 15 hours at the Branch Office Square, where they will be offering clothes, decoration and accessories....

The Mijas Foreigners Department receives an award from Sur in English

On its 40th anniversary, the newspaper honoured three other projects that have also been pioneers, such as the Mijas Town Hall in the attention to the foreign community

Micaela Fernández / Nuria Luque

Proud of the progress achieved and with the same enthusiasm as on the first day, the members of the Foreigners Department of Mijas collected on Monday 7th the award presented by Sur in English on the occasion of its 40th anniversary. The gala ceremony took place at the Meliá Don Pepe hotel in Marbella and was attended by the technicians of the area Katja Thirion and Laura Córdoba, the councillor for Foreigners, Mario Bravo (PP), and the founder of the department, Ana Skou, now retired.

“We wanted to give recognition to people who have been pioneers like us and the Mijas Foreigners Office started in 1985, just after Sur In English started, so we have started and grown together and we have shared the need to give information to English speaking people”, said the editor of the Sur In English newspaper, Rachel Haynes.

“We started working in March 1985. I started at the old Mijas Town Hall as an interpreter, but I soon realised that just translating was not enough and that it was necessary to provide information about how public administrations worked”,

recalled Skou, who collected the award proud of the journey of a department that, at the time, was unique in the whole country.

A well-deserved award

“It is a great honour to receive this recognition and we are very happy that they have thought of us.

Since 1985 attending to foreigners

Katja Thirion and Laura

The founder of the Department is Ana Skou and I am continuing with the project together with my colleague Laura Córdoba, we really have the same enthusiasm today as we did 40 years ago”, added technician Katja Thirion.

For his part, Mario Bravo complimented the Department of Fo-

reigners for winning over many foreigners, for decades, to stay and live in our municipality. “As we always say in the Department of Foreigners, if you have not been lucky enough to be born in Mijas, have the wisdom to come and live with us”, concluded the councillor in a few words to the public after being in charge of presenting the award.

With the arrival of foreigners, said the councillor, “Mijas has grown not only in quantity but also in quality and that is why we are so proud, both of Sur in English’s work on its own, as well as ours in Mijas. That is why we think it is so good and very logical to give the award to the Department founded, created and directed by Ana Skou until her retirement a few months ago”.

Sur In English, 40 years of history

On July 20th 1984, Prensa Malagueña launched SUR In English, a revolutionary publication that would mark a milestone on the Costa del Sol. It was the first newspaper published in English and aimed at the international community living in Malaga. To celebrate, the newspaper has organised activities that will take place throughout the year. The first was the 40th anniversary gala, which also awarded prizes to the Panorama agency, the English Cemetery Foundation and the British Chamber of Commerce in Spain.

Mijas draws for the 1,600 places for the senior citizens’ trip

Senior citizens who have been awarded the trip to

Melilla can make their payments until Monday 14th

In a public and transparent way, the Town Hall drew lots on Tuesday 8th for the 1,600 places reserved for this year’s senior citizens’ trip, of which 600 are for Melilla and the rest for Granada. For the first time, the Town Hall has had to use this method, as 1,957 applications were submitted, of which 1,701 people met the requirements, and 1,600 places were offered.

In this regard, the councillor of the department, Silvia Marín (PP), explained that “despite having increased the number of places this year, including the extra shift last year, we have received 300 more applications, and this is due to the fact that the number of pensioners in Mijas continues to grow, in fact, in the last year we have processed 600 new pensioner card”. As the director of the CAC Mijas, Francisco Javier Fructuoso, recalled, this exhibition “is the third and last one, the one we were missing. The other two, Inferno and Paradiso, were already on display at the centre a few years ago. It is a very difficult collection to obtain, which is why they have negotiated to have it for

six months instead of three”. Thus, Mijeños and tourists will be able to enjoy one of the most important projects of the painter Salvador Dalí, as he himself stated in his day. The councillor of the government team Mario Bravo (PP), who attended the inaugura-

tion together with other councillors, invited “everyone to come and participate in this cultural activity, where in addition, within the museum, we have a permanent exhibition of all the ceramics of Picasso and another part of the exhibition with works by Dalí”.

A special commission

In 1965, halfway through his life, on the occasion of the 700th anniversary of Dante Alighieri’s death, Dalí was commissioned by the Italian government to illustrate the three cantos that make up the ‘Divine Comedy’. Thirty works for each one, plus one for the introduction, making a hundred scenes of a project that united two geniuses and t hat can now be enjoyed in our town.

I.P. Everything is ready for La Cala to enjoy in style its most important festivity: the day of Santa Teresa de Jesús. On Tuesday 15th of October at 19:30 hours the traditional mass will take place in the parish church, followed by the long awaited procession of the saint through the streets of La Cala.

“We are very excited and nervous, we have worked a lot so that our traditions can continue ”, said the president of the Asociación Parroquial de Santa Teresa, Belén Guerra, during the presentation of the event together with the councillor for Festivities, Silvia Marín (PP) and the group’s treasurer, Alejandro Ortiz. The great novelty of the events is “that we will resume the celebration of the ‘verbena’ of Santa Teresa”.
