Report by Ed. Dep. / Design: Carmen Martín
The delegate of the Junta de Andalucía in Málaga, Patricia Navarro, visited last week the secondary school (IES) Ana Carmona ‘Veleta’ in Las Lagunas. Navarro, who was accompanied by the delegate for Educational Development and Vocational Training, Miguel Briones; the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP); and the director of the centre, Encarnación Gutiérrez, highlighted the “enormous effort that has been made by the Andalusian Government to ensure that the new IES Ana Carmona ‘Veleta’ has been operational since the beginning of the current school year”.
Something that the mayoress of Mijas also emphasized: “I would like to highlight the commendable effort made by the Department of Educational Development and Vocational Training to ensure that the students could start the course in this center, maintaining the necessary security measures while the works are being completed, which will occur before the end of the year. Of course, I would like to express my gratitude to the educational community”. The mayoress also wanted to highlight the investment of the Junta in the facilities: “The new secondary

Andalusia, all thanks to an investment of seven million euros”. Navarro stressed the importance of “making the completion of the works compatible with the safe use of the centre by students and teaching staff, guaranteeing the safety of the educational community at all times”. The delegate added that the priority of the Andalusian Government “was to open the centre in time for the students to be able to start the school year normally, and we have managed to make this possible, maintaining all the necessary safety measures”. The delegate assured that “the works will be finished very soon, the company has taken on this commitment and we are confident that by the end of the year we will be able to see the project completely finished. Until then, we have worked hard to ensure that the faci-
lities are safe and functional to use”.
From the regional administration, the centre has a partial occupancy certificate, which has allowed both the first and second floors of the building to be operational. These are where the school’s classrooms and administrative offices are located, ‘guaranteeing their functioning while the pending works are completed’, said the delegate, who insisted that ‘the safety of our students and teachers has been our main priority throughout the process. The first two floors are fully operational and, with the partial occupation certificate, we have ensured that the students can start their classes normally, without risk”.
In April 2024, the Junta and the Mijas Town Hall signed the transfer of the 7,500 square metre plot where the centre is now located.
M.F./N.L. The Corte de Autor ham shop is participating for the first time in the Las Lagunas Tapa Route with a ham tartare. It was, in fact, the first establishment where, on Monday 30th, the tasting sessions began with the culinary experts who, in this third edition of the route, will be in charge of tasting the proposals. The result was, they said, outstanding.
The tapa presented by Corte de Autor, which combines tradition and innovation in a single bite and
is “made with diced Iberian ham, a little secret and salmorejo”, as the owner of the ham shop, Fran Ortiz, explained, impressed the tasters. “The tapa is very good and the presentation is appropriate”, said one of the tasters, María Ángeles Núñez
“This year we have the pleasure of having some magnificent professionals from the Peña Los Artistas Culinarios. They are going to go to the shops, taste the tapas, and if they see that they need to make any kind of suggestion they will let us know and we will also inform the shops”, explained the president of the Federation of Associations (FA) of Mijas, Charo Cortés, who attended the start of the tastings together with the councillor for Commerce of the Mijas Town Hall, Juan Carlos Maldonado (PMP).
“With the tapas route we are making a neighbourhood, we are also making Las Lagunas a gastronomic destination, working with gastronomy and commerce, promoting its menu and getting neighbours involved with local commerce”, dijo said the councillor.
In total, this year the III Las Lagunas Tapa Route, which will be presented on Friday 4th of October at Bar Gaby (last year’s winner), will have ten participa-
ting establishments. During these days the team of tasters has been trying their gastronomic proposals. The aim is “to give advice to try to improve the tapa and help the shops. We are not going to criticise, but to make suggestions for improvement, what we are trying to do is give our opinion in order to improve as much as possible, and then the establishment will decide whether or not to incorporate our suggestions”, explained Núñez.

Inaugurated the UP workshops with an official ceremony
The event focused on the recognition of Inocencia Pérez, who has been the coordinator of the institution for three decades until her retirement
The UP of Mijas has started this week a dozen workshops in addition to the 23 that began last September 16th. The mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), inaugurated them on Wednesday 2nd in an official ceremony that focused on the recognition of Inocencia Pérez, who has been the coordinator of the institution until her retirement.
The UP has been teaching different disciplines to the people of Mijas for more than four decades. The mayoress, the councillor of the UP, Melisa Ceballos (PP), and the councillor for Human Resources, Mario Bravo (PP), attended the start of these workshops to show their support for the work being done by this institution for which they have various projects. “The UP needs a transformation with which we can

attend to all those who are interested in participating in the various workshops on offer”, explained Mata. “We have to be clear about the fact that our activities will be aimed mainly at the residents of Mijas, that is to say, that our residents have the priority of being attended in the workshops that we are supporting from the Town Hall”, added the mayoress.
The improvement and expansion of the facilities is also among the objectives of the government team, which values the great reception that the UP has, with more than 3,300 students, waiting lists and 35 teachers, two of them still to be incorporated. “We have workshops distributed all over Mijas, in La Cala, in Las Lagunas, in Mijas Pueblo, in the parks, in high schools...
and what we want to do is to make a proper facility so that the UP can grow as it should”, said Ceballos, who added that different options are being considered to improve these facilities.
Also with its presence at the start of the academic year, the government team wanted to give its support not only to the institution, but also to the teaching staff: “Our message is one of support [to the UP], confirming that in the end we have been able to solve some technical problems and all the lessons have started their activities, those that did not start on the 16th of September have started on the 1st of October; it is also a message of support to those teachers because the 11 who do not have stable job are going to stabilise between now and the end of the year”, clarified Bravo, who added that they also want to strengthen those workshops that have a waiting list and make adjustments in those that do not have such a high demand. In this regard, the Town Hall recalls that there are workshops that still have places

available. In addition, there are two workshops that have yet to determine their start dates, one on yoga and the other on cinema.
Tribute to Inocencia Pérez In addition to the work of the teachers, the UP is also possible thanks to the work of other municipal workers, such as Inocencia Pérez, coordinator of this institution, who retired on October 1st and who was recognised at last Tuesday’s event. “I can only thank Inocencia for the admirable work she has done over all these years. Her effort, dedication and perseverance will remain forever in the UP and her humanity and smile will remain in our hearts”, said the mayoress of Mijas, who presented her with a plaque and a bouquet of flowers. “My working life has revolved around the UP”, said this woman who has directed this institution for 30 years and has seen it grow: “At the beginning, it was a group of eight or ten people excited about a new project which, little by little, has been growing”.
Ed. Dep. An exceptional summer. This is how the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), described the last few months for tourism in Mijas, as to the good results achieved must be added those obtained in September, when a 91.13% occupancy rate was recorded, which is more than five points higher than the same month last year.
According to the data provided by the Costa del Sol Hotel Entrepreneurs Association (Aehcos), from June to September the municipality has registered an average occupancy rate of 90.94%. During the month of August the occupancy rate reached 94.19%, close to full occupancy.
Now, explains the government team, the figures for September “consolidate Mijas as one of the leading tourist municipalities, especially when the occupancy rate for the month of September in the province of Malaga was 88.74%, which means that the municipality is above this level”.
The general forecasts for the coming months have changed very little with respect to those announced by Aehcos at the beginning of the month. Occupancy in October is estimated at 82.34% compared to 83.71% in 2023, while for November, the hotel association expects occupancy to be 66.41% compared to 71.48% last year, although these are provisional figures.
“We can only congratulate ourselves on these figures, which reflect the strategic position of Mijas in the national tourist industry as a whole. The wide range of possibilities that Mijas offers makes us a unique international destination. We must continue working to maintain, improve and consolidate our leading position”, said the mayoress. As for the tourist offices, during the month of September they received 14,302 visitors, of which 2,862 were Spanish, 2,867 British, 1,664 French and 798 German.

San Miguel once again brings together the English and Spanish communities
This is a very traditional festivity that is celebrated every 29th of September in Calahonda
Micaela Fernández / Ed. Dep.
For those who live in Sitio de Calahonda the feast day of San Miguel is very special. Not only because of the devotion to the saint, but also because it is a festive day that for decades has united around the Church of San Miguel the English and Spanish communities living in the area. “It is always a very special and beautiful day in

The platform helps foreign women in the municipality who are victims of abuse
Ed. Dep. The Viogenex group, which offers support to foreign victims of gender violence, held one of its regular meetings on Friday 27th. During the meeting, some specific cases that occurred during the summer were discussed, and the protocol for assisting these victims was evaluated, both initially (such as the change of place of residence and emergency financial aid), as well as the sub-
gregate to celebrate this festivity together”. The mayoress was also accompanied by the councillors of the government team Mario Bravo (PP), Silvia Marín (PP), Marco Cortés (PP) and Juan Carlos Cuevas Dawson (VOX). “I was moved, I couldn’t help it. My father was one of the promoters of this church, and when I was a child I played in this area. Calahonda is a very important residential area, an example for the entire Costa del Sol, and we want it to continue to be so”, said Cuevas Dawson.
A day of coexistence
Currently, Sitio de Calahonda has
more than 7,000 properties and more than 60 years of history. Neighbours of different nationalities live here, mainly English. After the mass, one of the most endearing moments came with the small procession of the statue of San Miguel around the parish church. The club points out that last year, for example, District 2203 carried out more than 500 projects. “We are here to fight the consequen-
ces of conflicts such as poverty and injustice”, said Rizzo.
International organisation
The Rotary Club was created in 1905 in the USA. “We could say that it is similar to the Lions Club, which is perhaps better known and more European”, explained Bravo. The Rotary Club Mijas International, to which the Mijas councillor belongs, was created in May 2017, belongs to District 2203, which brings together 105 Rotary clubs from Valencia, the Balearic Islands, Murcia, Andalusia, Ceuta and Melilla and more
than 2,200 members. “We meet twice a month and suggest different projects to help people in need in any area of life, for example, we help food banks, Adimi, Caritas and the Red Cross, among others. We also help other associations with funds and by organising events to benefit them”, explained Bravo, who concluded by stressing that “basically, what we are looking for is to improve society beyond the usual strict and rigid administrative organisation, it is not about competing with each other, but about being complementary”.

MIJAS, UNITED WITH AN IRISH association that works against suicide
The town is joining forces with PIPS Hope & Support, an Irish association founded in 2003 that works to prevent suicide
To commemorate World Mental Health Day, on Tuesday 1st, the Town Hall read out a manifesto calling for measures to be put in place to promote mental health. In this context, the Irish association PIPS Hope & Support, which focuses on suicide prevention, visited our town as each year it organises the Camino Costa initiative, which takes its members on a five-day walking tour around different parts of Andalusia to raise awareness of their cause. On this occasion they have chosen Malaga and the Senda Azul. Thanks to this initiative, they raise funds to finance their different programmes. “This walk is a very individual experience, but also a group experience, as walking helps to improve mental health, most of them are people who have lost family members”, explained Maria Ferguson, who is in charge of fundraising.
The group that visited Mijas on Thursday 3rd was made up, for the most part, of people who have lost a family member to suicide. The councillor for Fo-

“Although we are not responsible for the lives of municipal workers, we do want to take care of this matter, at least for the time they spend working here eache week”, said Bravo, who added that “they were very pleased to see that they are not alone in this fight, that there are many people working to prevent suicide, which is a silent illness that is often unknown to the patient himself”.
The group expressed its gratitude and presented a plaque in recognition of the work carried
out by the Town Hall in this matter. “In this fight we are late, we are few, it has to be all of us, we have to fight harder, this has to end and the way to do it is by taking care of mental health from the first symptoms and for that we need money, specialist people and will”, Bravo added.
PIPS Hope And Support was founded by the family of Seamas McCabe, a 20-year-old who took his own life in 2003. With the aim of offering support, strength and hope, the association was born. “It does a lot of work to help people who have lost family members to suicide, we provide emotional and also financial support”, said PIPS fundraiser Maria Ferguson.
