Report by Irene Pérez / Design: Isabel Merino
The Mijas Town Hall has put out to tender the drafting of several projects, such as the creation of a new cultural space in La Puente, one of the most popular and emblematic places in Mijas Pueblo. The initial price of this tender is 20,134.40 euros and the maximum deadline for the delivery of the project is 90 days.
The tender includes that the winning company must be in charge of the drafting of the basic renovation and execution project, as well as the health and safety study for the La Puente building. This area is located between the streets Coín and Fuente del Algarrobo, where there was a building that was demolished.
The most characteristic feature of this place, where the building once stood, is that currently only the barrel vault that creates a passageway remains, so the inten-

tion of the government team is to create a new building in the image and likeness of the one that stood there and was demolished in the 1980s. In fact, it should be noted that La Puente has great historical value, as it is an architectural element included in the General Catalogue of the Historical Heritage of Andalusia. For these reasons, the awardee of the project, which must be delivered within a maximum period of 90 days, must include a report, blueprints so that the work is properly defined, technical specifications to describe and regulate the execution, as well as the contractor’s obligations, a budget, a work plan, a report of the reconstruction work and a health and safety study.
Cultural purposes
The objective, according to the Town Planning and Historical Heritage councillor, Lourdes Burgos (PP), is to make use of the plot, on the one hand to preserve the historical image of the town with a façade on Calle La Cantera and Fuente del Algarrobo and, on the other, to locate a space for cultural purposes with a permanent exhibition hall that includes the most relevant archaeological materials found, for example, in the gardens of La Muralla and in the Cortijo de Acebedo, together with an exhibition of photographs of the period.

La Puente is part of the history of Mijas Pueblo. In the past, it was used as a washing place, as under the arch ran the course of a fountain. It is an emblematic element of this town, the scene of numerous snapshots and a place of passage for locals and tourists, and is included in the General Catalogue of the Historical Heritage of Andalusia.

time to get to know our roots, our history”, explained the Mayoress, Ana Mata (PP), on Thursday 19th. On the other hand, the councillor for Infrastructures, Juan José Torres Trella (PP), announced that the drafting of the project to
reform and extend the facilities of the municipal cemetery has also been put out to public tender. In this case, the initial price of the tender is 25,833.50 euros and the deadline to deliver the project is 90 days. The aim is to have the
necessary project to “incorporate new funeral parlours and rooms, as the current ones are insufficient and small. We also want to work on extending the parking area”, explained the councillor, who pointed out that new offices, cold storage and an oven for exhumations (burning of clothes and belongings) are also planned.
Other projects
The refurbishment of the Miguel González Berral auditorium has also been put out to tender, for just over 45,000 euros, “where some changes are going to be made to the layout of the spaces and the seating area is going to be increased”, explained Torres Trella, while the mayoress stressed that the most important action planned at this point will be the installation of a retractable roof, “because it is a large venue for events, but not only during the summer when the temperature is good, but also during the rest of the year”. The government team has also earmarked around 41,000 euros for the drafting of the project to improve the Employment Promotion building in Las Lagunas, “very frequented by job seekers and above all by citizens who want to improve their training, so we think they have to do it in the best conditions and that is why we have promoted this much needed action”, said the mayoress of Mijas. For his part, the councillor for Infrastructures said that “in this building we will do different maintenance and improvement works, both on the outside and in the classrooms and common areas inside”.

School year 2024-2025
ALMOST 6,000 STUDENTS return to class
in Mijas secondary schools
The start of the 2024-2025 academic year was staggered and without incidents on the first day
Report by M.J.Gómez and Cristina Bejarano
The holidays are over, the school year begins. At 11.45, punctually, the students of the first and second year of Secondary Education were the first to enter the secondary schools on Monday 16th of September, where they were welcomed by the teachers who, group by group, told them which class they should go to. The councillor for Education of the Mijas Town Hall, Melisa Ceballos (PP), visited several schools to see how the start of the school year was going. “So far, the beginning

of the school year is going well, without any incidents. There are more than 5,000 students in Mijas, including those in Las Lagunas, La Cala and Mijas Pueblo”, explained the councillor for Education.
A total of 5,860 students are currently enrolled in Mijas, distributed in two schools in La Cala, where 1,166 students are enrolled; one school in Mijas Pueblo with 260 students; and Las Lagunas, which is the town centre with the largest number of students, 4,343, distributed among four secondary schools. In Las Lagunas, the new building of the IES Ana Carmo-
na ‘Veleta’, which will have 610 students this year, has come into operation.
In one of them, the IES Las Lagunas, for example, there are 1,090 students enrolled so far, who will be attended by about 80 teachers. “They seemed very eager and with high expectations, as for the staff, we are very excited and working hard to make sure that everything goes well, that everything is as flexible and easy as possible for all the students, that they are in the best conditions and that the course runs smoothly”, said the principal, Adela Camacho, at the entrance to the school. In secondary education this year there are no major changes, said Camacho, who pointed out that the most significant change affects students in the first year of the Basic Degree Vocational Training Course, “because it is dual programme, which is also a handicap for the school, because students will spend six hours a week working in companies doing their internships and the rest of the time here with us”, said the principal of Las Lagunas Secondary School.
IES Ana Carmona ‘Veleta’
One of the main novelties at the start of the 2024-2025 academic year in secondary education is the opening of the Ana Carmona ‘Veleta’ Secondary School building in Las Lagunas, which on Monday opened its doors to its 610 students. With the exception of the first year students, the rest of the children have been studying, in
previous years, at the CIEP Indira Gandhi facilities. “In IES Ana Carmona ‘Veleta’ the classes have started normally within the possibilities found. There is a part that is closed, the library and the cafeteria, but according to the construction company, the rest of the work will be finished by the 30th of November”, concluded the councillor for Education.

Students of the Mitur programme show the attractions of Mijas to British tour operators
The objectives are to give the students practical training and to promote Mijas as a tourist destination
Mijas is, without a doubt, one of the main destinations chosen by the British, therefore, we must keep working on this tourist market. On Wednesday 18th, a group of tour operators visited the village, with the help of 15 students of the Mitur Employment and Training programme, a course which provides a certificate of professionalism in tourism, tourism development and information and which has been launched through the areas of Employment Promotion and Tourism.
The first stop was a must: the El Compás Hermitage, which is the sanctuary of the patron saint of Mijas, the Virgen de la Peña.
The
course is promoted by the areas of Promotion and Employment and Tourism
There the students explained what this place means to the people of Mijas and other details, such as the legend that narrates the appearance of the Virgin to some little shepherds and the fact that a castle was erected in this area. Raúl Criado, one of the students, was in charge of explaining, among other things, where the name of Mijas comes from, as well as some of the most popular and outstanding local traditions and customs. “We have prepared a special guide around the village, visiting 16 of the most emblematic spots, in each of the places there will be a student in charge of explaining that area to the visitors. In addi-

tion, along the way we are going to tell them some curiosities, stories and tales about the village”, said the student.
The councillor for Tourism in Mijas, Francisco Jerez (Vox), also took part in the guided tour, he was in charge of welcoming both groups. “It is a combination of British group of tour operators, who are the ones who can bring us more tourists in the future, and the students who are training to work in this sector”, said Jerez.
Tour in English
Those in charge of the course assure that “the students have prepared the visit thoroughly, they have studied every corner, they have researched deeply about the history, legends and resources of Mijas, to explain everything in detail and in English to these professionals of the sector”, said María del Mar Campaña, employment counsellor of the Mitur programme, who added that “the idea came from a collaboration with the Tourism area, that told
The Local Governing Body approves the draft of the Municipal Organic Regulations
Ed. Dep. The Local Governing Body of Mijas has approved the draft of the Municipal and Plenary Organic Regulations (ROM), a fundamental tool that has a dual purpose: to regulate the political and administrative organisation of the corporation, as well as the functioning of its governing and control bodies; and to regulate
those legislative developments that must be incorporated, including the adaptation of the administrative and institutional organisation to the common electronic procedure, as well as the incorporation of the requirements arising from the principles of transparency, access to public information and good governance.

us that a group of tour operators were coming and needed someone to show them the town and that is how this practical experience started. It should be noted that they also receive an English certificate”.
Andrew Farr, head of public relations for the Classic Collection Holidays tour operator, pointed out that “this is a visit from some of the leading British travel agents”, and noted that “we are really enjoying it so far, we are staying at La Zambra, which is fabulous, it has wonderful hospitality, overlooking the golf courses, plus what we are seeing so far of Mijas is very nice, the village, the sea views... fabulous”.
This guided tour is part of the initiatives scheduled during the Mitur programme, the course started in May and will end in June 2025. The aim of this activity is to put into practice the knowledge of the students, on the one hand, and, on the other hand, to highlight the differentiating features of Mijas as a tourist destination.
B.M. Mayors, councillors and technicians from 30 municipalities in the metropolitan area of Malaga participated this week in the Malaga Global Metropolis Forum, conceived by the Ciedes Foundation as a meeting point to face challenges and priority issues that must be addressed jointly on issues such as water, mobility, municipal financing or land availability. After the first constitutive session held on the 5th of September 2023 and the second and third monographic sessions on the integral water cycle, which took place on the 7th of February and the 2nd of July, the fourth session was held on Wednesday 18th at Malaga Town Hall, in which issues related to mobility were addressed. Specifically, proposals were discussed to modernise transport systems and infrastructures, promote sustainable mobility, strengthen network communication and the commitment to sustainable public transport.
The delegate of the Junta de Andalucía in the province, Patricia Navarro, took part in the forum together with technicians, mobility experts and mayors, including the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP). “This forum is important to take measures together, to create working committees, technical, but also political, where we can
To this end, the proposed ROM is structured into a table of contents, statement of intent, 102 articles, organised into a preliminary title and eight titles, a temporary

all discuss the problems that need to be addressed and, in this sense, provide solutions”, she said.
The mayoress of Mijas, together with other mayors, supported the coastal train as a possible solution to the problems addressed. “One of the claims that we have been making from the Town Hall is the need for the coastal train, which is so needed in Mijas, as it is the third largest municipality in the province and has no railway connection”, she added.
Liberalisation of the motorway
The liberalisation of the motorway and the promotion of public transport are other proposals of the mayoress of Mijas in this regard. “We continue to demand through the Provincial Consortium for the bus service to be more frequent. The establishment of bus-VAO lanes has been analysed here so that these vehicles are prioritised in order to facilitate transport to both Marbella and Malaga”, stressed the mayoress. Mata also pointed out that the creation of new infrastructures is of paramount importance: “Mijas is a municipality undergoing a great development and development will come to a standstill if the necessary infrastructure works are not undertaken with regard to mobility”.
political groups and corporate members, the right to information for citizens and citizen participation, and the body or bodies that will perform the functions of budgeting, accounting, treasury and tax collection.
After its approval by the Local Governing Body, the text must be endorsed by the municipal plenary and published in the Official Gazette of the Province (BOP). The ROM is essential to adapt the municipality to the regime of large population municipalities.
