The mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), carried out the traditional ribbon cutting with the outgoing king and queen in their last official act, after which she pressed the button to switch on the almost 400,000 LED lights of the artistic lighting. Mata inaugurated the fairground together with the government team, the Junta de Festejos, local authorities, groups and neighbours. On this first day, the king and queen of the Mijas Fair 2024 were crowned, with Vidal Pagés Blanco elected as king of the Mijas Fair and Nuria de Rechter as

Coinciding with the opening day, the mayoress visited the Mijas Comunicacion stand, where she said that “there is no fair like the one in Mijas Pueblo and that has this location. This Mijas fair does not conclude the circuit of fairs at an Andalusian level, but without a doubt there are many people who are watching it because here, fun, is guaranteed”. Mata stated that it is a fair that “at provincial and even regional level, is also very popular”, to which she added that “this is my first year as mayoress so I want everything to turn out well but, as always, I entrust myselfto the Virgen de la Peña so that everything turns out as it should, wonderfully”.

On Wednesday 4th, institutional representatives travelled to the area of Cortijo de Ahogadero to show their support for the surveys that are being carried out in parallel to the work on the park. The mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata, pointed out that “this site will contribute to giving more importance to the history of our municipality as well as the possibility of explaining to anyone who loves history what existed here in Roman times” / I.P.

The structures belonging to the new site have been detected during the construction of the leisure park, which is currently under construction
The Mayoress, Ana Mata (PP), and the Councillor for Historical Heritage, Lourdes Burgos (PP), announced on Wednesday 4th the finding of a new archaeological site located in the Cortijo de Ahogadero, which was discovered during the construction of the leisure park that is being built in this area of Las Lagunas.
The mayoress highlighted the work carried out for the conservation and dissemination of the historical and cultural heritage of Mijas, which is now enhanced by this site, which covers 350 linear metres. “During the progress of the works of the new park we have found this surprise.
In Mijas, we can boast of having these archaeological sites that enhance our municipality even more. We have a very important and interesting historical heritage that we always preserve and, of course, we are going to continue studying to find out what Mijas was like in ancient times”, explained Mata, who said that new discoveries are expected that will add value to the new park. According to the first analyses, everything seems to indicate that this was an area dedicated to industrial activities related to fish preservation (salting factory) and pottery production. In fact, both types of spaces are usually linked to settlements identified as
The Historical Heritage Department was already considering the possibility that this area could contain archaeological remains. For this reason, the contract with the contractor for the park project stipulated the presence of an archaeologist to supervise the work together with the project manager. The premise was not to carry out any work in the areas where remains were found, ensuring the conservation of the findings.

In this dig, ten test excavations have been planned over 350 linear metres, the main purpose of which is to obtain data for the contextualisation and identification of the space, knowledge of its extension, the definition of the functions of these structures and, finally, their adaptation to the current construction of the leisure park and their enhancement so that future visitors can get to know the site.
Roman villas, of which there are numerous examples all along the coast of the province of Málaga. The current test excavations are being carried out in the pottery area, where superimposed wall structures have been detected, thus demonstrating that the site has several phases.
As for the period associated with the site, the councillor for Historical Heritage reported that “in the upper levels, the materials
found place it in the 4th century A.D.; for the deeper levels, i.e. the oldest, objects such as coins or fragments of fine ware pottery, which provide a specific chronology, denote dates up to the 1st century A.D., when the active life would have began in these facilities”. The councillor also pointed out that these are very important remains and that intensive work has been carried out to conserve any remains found, all coordina-

The remains found so far have been discovered in the test excavations carried out in the area close to what will be the amphitheatre of the park that is being built at this point. The idea of the government team is to keep the findings in this place, “taking advantage of this amphitheatre to narrate what happened here in Roman times”, as the mayoress stated.

DISSEMINATION
MORE THAN A LEISURE park
Once the excavations have been completed, the aim is to dedicate part of the future park to publicising the findings a ong visitors.
“This park, as well as having sports, environmental and family areas, will also have a historical focus, with a space dedicated to the preservation of our heritage”
f inca c a e va e . his is ho the co nci or for Historical Heritage catalogued this new site, which “will serve to enhance the value of this park by adding a cultural and historical perspective, so that we all know where we come from and feel ro d of o r heritage .
In addition to green areas, sports courts, a cycle path, a navigable lake, ornamental fountains, a dog park, an amphitheatre with a capacity for 1,900 people, among other attractions, the future park will have a section dedicated to our past. To do this, it is planned to excavate an area of 350 linear metres “that goes beyond the park but borders it, it will take six years of excavation but that will remain for the future, so that everyone can learn about our wonderful past, for which we are unique”, said the councillor Lourdes Burgos.
The structures that appeared as a result of the earthworks that precede the construction of the park are related to a pottery complex as well as a salting factory from Roman times, which gives us very precise information about industry and commerce of the society of the coast of Malaga during the first cent ries of o r era.

“Like Cortijo Acebedo, this is an area where there have been no constructions, which allowed its preservation to the present day”
The elements found are, according to the coordinator of the Historical Heritage Department, “very common in a type of settlement that was established as a pattern in Roman times along the entire coast of Malaga”. According to Desirée Piñero, ‘Roman villas have a residential part consisting of the ‘domus’ and the baths, and an industrial part, which is the area we have discovered so far”.
Everything that has been found so far gives the researchers clues as to where the site is located. “Delicate objects such as a pin used to adorn Roman women’s hairstyles, a ring, coins... different objects that tell us about the history of the people who lived here in Mijas from the 1st to the 4th century AD”, explained Piñero.

The Costa del Sol Hotel Entrepreneurs Association (Aehcos) in its latest report states that hotel occupancy during the month of August was almost 91%, two points higher than in August 2023. They also point out that Mijas, with 94.19%, is among the six municipalities in the province with the best records, after Benalmádena (97.64%) and Fuengirola (95.22%). Torremolinos (93.76%), Marbella (92.55%) and Málaga city (92.48%) also exceed 90% occupancy. In the case of Mijas, the forecast for August was 80%, a figure that has been exceeded by almost 15 points. “These are good figures that corroborate that Mijas is a priority destination and very much in demand. We are a complete destination, with a huge and varied range of services and leisure activities of excellent quality, which is the result of the hard work carried out by everyone involved. “It has been a good month for the entire hotel sector in Malaga with up to six municipalities exceeding 90% occupancy”, said José Luque, president of Aehcos, who also called for prudence towards the end of the summer season. “Last minute bookings and the offers promoted by the hotel industry have helped to favour the good figures obtained”, added Luque.
Forecasts
Regarding the forecast for the coming months, Aehcos is cautious, estimating an occupancy rate of 88.74% for September, a figure slightly higher than last year (86.75%), while for October the association expects a drop of just over one point, from 83.71% in October 2023 to 82.34% in October 2024.

“These are good figures that c rob ate that Mijas is a pri ity destination and very much in demand”
After knowing the results of this balance, the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), offered an assessment in which she highlighted that “these are good figures that corroborate that Mijas is a priority destination and very much in demand”. The mayoress explained that “the increase in the number of visitors that Mijas has every year is exponential. We have an average far above other municipalities in the province, something that is positive not only at a municipal level but also for the businesses such as hotels, shops, restaurants and golf courses, which make a great effort to offer a quality service”. Finally, from her point of view, she pointed out that “we all have to continue pulling together, working hand in hand with this sector, to reach a peak that generates wealth in our municipality, so that we can offer employment to our neighbours so that they don’t have to move to other towns”.

S pecial Area of Conservation
The Calahonda SAC covers an area of 1,400 hectares (from El Ejido beach to the Calahonda La Luna-Royal Beach area), and its biological value is incalculable, singular and unique due to the variety of exotic African, European, Mediterranean and Atlantic species that converge in its waters. Hence the importance of promoting its conservation and protection, prohibiting certain practices and controlling activities such as scuba diving.
WHAT IS A SAC?
The designation of a site as a SAC is intrinsic to its inclusion in the European Natura 2000 network. Its main objectives are the maintenance and recovery of habitats and species of flora and fauna native to the area, with the Junta de Andalucía being the competent administration for its protection.
Are the different species that have been catalogued, including molluscs, decapods (crabs, shrimps and hermit crabs) and echinoder s rchins and starfish among others.
Posidonia meadows attract a multitude of molluscs and crustaceans that leave their larvae.
There are rocky outcrops of great ecological value that allow the settlement of numerous marine organisms, being one of the few that exist in the province of Malaga.
They are found just a few metres from the coast and need plenty of light and warm currents.

BIOLOGICAL INDICATOR of marine quality
The Posidonia oceanica meadows are the best biological indicator of the environmental quality of coastal and littoral waters. The restoration of these seagrass meadows, as well as coastal vegetation in general, and its associated fauna is one of the tools for mitigating the effects of climate change, acting as natural barriers to waves and storms, reducing the oss of sand fro eaches rod cing o gen fi tering and c arif ing coasta aters fi ing and sett e ents or areas of refuge and reproduction of an enormous marine and coastal biodiversity.

MIJAS, AMONG THE BEST
subm ged f ts
The importance of the seabed in Mijas is outstanding, especially because it has authentic submerged forests where posidonias abound whereas they are practically extinct in the Mediterranean Sea. This week we dive into one of the areas where the marine biodiversity is spectacular, the Alhamar beach in Calahonda.
The need to preserve the natural heritage of the seabed should be an objective for all of us and should be in our minds every time we go to the beach. Gema Infante, who belongs to the Eco&Dive diving club, advised us: “It’s quite interesting that we are aware of the need for conservation, not to leave anything on the beach, not my bag, not my packet, not anything, and, of course, we’re very strict on the issue of cigarette butts”. She added: “If I leave something on the shore, it will reach the sea, but if I leave it in the rubbish and it is not properly covered, it will also reach the sea with the wind, just as if I leave it in a stream. So we also have to be very conscious of how we recycle and how we make sure that plastic is where it should be”.
Infante encourages us to see our sea from another perspective since “they are very shallow bottoms, just a few metres from the shore there is already the possibility of seeing posidonias, of seeing the marine biodiversity that exists, so it is something very easy to do”.
There is always the possibility of diving with professionals such as those at the Eco&Dive Diving Club, whose priority is training.
The posidonia meadows found on our coastline are of outstanding importance in the Mediterranean
“We offer this information because we need you to know about it so that you can love it, that’s what we always say. When you get to know this diversity, you identify the different species and the tour becomes very entertaining. We always keep your safety in mind, but our main goal is that you can get to know the marine ecosystem”, said Infante.
If you want to enjoy the marine phanerogams and the natural aquarium where there is an abundance of fish species, it is very easy, just a few metres from the shore you can admire the great marine ecosystem that we have in Mijas.

SEABED
The protagonists: Posidonia meadows
The Mijas coastline has a seabed that is home to a great biodiversity. Its uniqueness lies in the fact that it is at the limit of the natural distribution area of the habitat and has unspoilt stretches where abundant vegetation flourishes, especially oceanic Posidonia. Also of great value are the existence of gorgonias (a type of coral) and the fact that it is an area where cetaceans are present.

MUNICIPAL NURSE ES
Once again this year, the entrance to the schools has been marked by the excited faces and some tears of the little ones and their parents
Beatriz Martín / Design: I.Merino
Most of the children were very happy to start a new year at the Gloria Fuertes Nursery School. For many of them, Monday 2nd was their first experience at school. Some entered at a very early age, just a few months old, while others were already one or two years old. Here 213 children are starting a new stage “full of enthusiasm”, said the director of this centre, Alicia Castillo, “because every year, we come renewed, with a lot of enthusiasm and excitement, eager to start all over again, but also a bit nervous, always”.
The Europa Nursery School (La Cala) has started the 2024/2025 school year with 136 children; the Limonar (La Cala), with 71; and the Mijas Pueblo, with 34, making a total of more than 450 children who have started this stage of education in the municipality.
This week and next week, children in the three stages: 0 to 1 year old, 1 to 2 and 2 to 3, can take advantage of an adjustment timetable to facilitate the beginning of the school year and the farewell with their parents. “There is a bit of everything, as it should happen on the first day. Children who are very happy to go back to school, others who find it a bit difficult after the summer break, on the beach, with their parents, and others who are starting for the first time, so we have to understand that everything is new for them”, explained Castillo.
Sensory learning
So, from the 16th of September, they will all be ready to face the normal timetable of this school, which is open from seven in the morning to five in the afternoon. This year, they say, they will develop an educational project based on sensory

Anyone interested in making a financial donation to buy food for the cats can contact the association by emailing gatoshuellassolidarias@gmail.com.
ALICIA CASTILLO Director of the Gloria Fuertes School
“For the parents it’s even harder than for the children because they leave them and maybe they see them a bit sad and they leave with a heavy heart. It’s normal, it just takes some time to adjust”

learning. “We will work a lot based on direct experience, with things that bring them closer to their daily world, through the manipulation of objects, because that is how they learn the most and we we have our project, with which we worked last
year”, explained the director.
This centre still has places available in all three stages, all with access to municipal subsidies, so if you want to enrol your children in the nursery school, you still have time. Happy school year!
Mijas Felina will collect cat food on Saturday 7th at Kiwoko Mijas.-
From Mijas Felina they claim that, on a daily basis, they feed “around 2,000 cats” which are distributed among the different colonies that exist in Mijas, which means a “monthly expense of approximately 7,000 euros”, which, translated into kilos, is around 3 tons. This money, they point out, is to a large extent provided by the association, which is once again asking the public to donate dry food or cans at the stand that they will set up at the Kiwoko shop in Mijas, in the Miramar Shopping Centre on Saturday 7th, from 10 to 22 hours. Finally, they point out that anyone who wants to collaborate can make a donation via Paypal (mijasfelina@hotmail.com).
Charity begins at home.-
Ed. Dep. The ACE Dog Shelter, founded in La Cala de Mijas in 1999, would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the La Cala de Mijas Lions Diabetic Support Group, for being a drop-off point for animal food at their Autumn Bazaar in La Cala de Mijas on Saturday, 7th of September. The event, which takes place from 11 to 15:30 hours on the terraces in front of Snack Attack and Bar Tuta, at Jardines Botanico in La Cala de Mijas, features a tempting line-up of arts and crafts stalls, live music, raffles and all the fun of the fair. Lunch with quiz tickets costing 10 euros each are also available from the Lions Shop and Bar Tuta. The ACE Dog Shelter, which has saved and rehomed more than 31,000 dogs plus many cats, is in desperate need of tinned food for the 600+ dogs, puppies, cats and kittens currently in their care.
Children will have a few days of adjustment period / B.Martín.
