열악함의 위대함: 앤드류 K 김의 예술세계에 대하여 간송미술문화재단 큐레이터 이진명

작가는 인터넷에서 열악한 이미지를 의도적으로 모은다. (채집한다.) 우리는 현재 컴퓨터로 헐리우드 영화를 감상함은 물론, 실시간으로 스포 츠 중계까지 즐긴다. 그리고 컴퓨터의 모니터나 노트북, 혹은 아이폰의 액정화면으로 넘실거리며 움직이는 이미지를 하나의 '창문(window)'처 럼 생각한다. (그것을 당연하게 느끼고 받아들인다.) 그러나 거울의 이미지가 '사실(reality)'이 아니라 '사실의 반영(reflection)'인 것처럼 컴퓨터 액정에 비추는 모든 이미지들은 사실이 아니라 사실의 반영이다. 더군다나 거울 이미지는 빛이 금속이나 액체와 같은 표면에 맺히는 일어나는 물리적 현상, 즉 왜곡된 상이기는 하지만, 인간 태초 때부터 따라붙었던 오랜 현상이기 때문에 당연하게 수용된 일상이다. 반면, 컴퓨터의 이미 지는 다른 맥락을 갖는다. 그것은 테크노이미지(techno-image)이다. 우리는 테크노이미지를 물에서 노니는 물고기처럼 당연하게 받아들이고 있다. 물을 당연하게 받아들이는 이러한 물고기의 멍청함(absurdity)을 가리켜 우선 '하이퍼퍼밀리티(hyperfamiliarity)', 즉 극도의 익숙함이라고 명명하자. 우리는 익숙함에 매몰되면서 자신이 살아가는 시대의 문제를 망각하게 된다. 우리는 우리가 사는 시대의 인사이더이다. 인사이더는 자신의 시대가 무엇인지 모른다. 그러나 그 느낌만큼은 생생하게 향유할 수 있다. (우리가 살아가는 시대의 느낌은 컬러풀하지만 시대의 의미는 모른다. 아웃사이더로서 우리는 조선후기의 의미를 알 수 있다. 그러나 그 느낌만큼은 흑백일수밖에 없다.) 너무나 실재와 비슷해져서 사실과 가 상을 더 이상 구분하지 못하는 테크노이미지의 시대에, 외려 깨지고 뭉개진 픽셀 사진을 의도적으로 채집하여 그림을 그리고, 더욱이 그곳에 가 필을 가하여 찾으려는 의미가 무엇인지 탐구해보는 것이 이 에세이의 목적이다. (그러면서 작가가 보았던 세계에 우리도 동참하게 되길 바란다.)

헤시오도스의 황금의 시대는『성서』의 에덴의 동산과 같다. 모든 것이 넉넉했다. 사람들은 있는 그대로의 자연을 사용하기만 하면 그 모든 것이 충만하여 다음 해를 기약할 수 있었다. (번성할 수 있었다.) 그러나 인간 번성과 자연의 생산량이 불일치를 겪으면서 이성을 사용할 수밖에 없었다. 이성을 사용하면서 사람들은 있는 그대로의 자연으로부터 탈존(ex-ist)해야만 했다. 탈존은 인간이 자연으로부터 찢어져서 분리되는 고 통을 수반한다. 이 고통 속에서 이성이 나왔다. 그리고 탈존(실존)이란 자연 밖에서 소외되면서 존재함을 말한다. 따라서 인간 이성은 인간이 신 에게 가하는 보복이라고 할 수 있다. 이것을 은의 시대라고 한다. 은의 시대는 자연과 인간의 투쟁이 시작된 시기다. 그러나 자연은 결코 패배를 내주지 않았다. 인간에 결코 지지 않는 자연에 대해서 인간은 여러 가지 관점을 낳았다. 이 관점의 편에 서서 인간은 서로가 서로에서 나뉘게 되 다 급기야 싸움을 시작한다. 통합을 이룩하는 영웅이 잠시 나타나지만(영웅의 시대) 이내 영웅마저 기만하는 속임수, 배덕, 부패, 간교, 속임수의 세태가 줄을 이었다. (이 철의 시대는 현재까지 진행된다.) 역사가 진행되면서 기술이 발전하는 것은 점점 고갈되는 에너지와 자원을 더욱더 짜 내기 위한 제스처에 불과하다. 이 법칙과 관련해서 더욱 생각해야 하는 문제가 바로 인류의 미디어 발전과정이다.

인류의 최초의 작업은 빌렌도르프의 비너스나 빗살무늬 토기였을 것이다. 손과 세계가 마주치면서 형성된 관계는 구체적 감각에서 추상적 개념으로 발전되었다. 추상적 개념이 형성되면서 인간은 그림을 그리기 시작했다. 그림은 마술·신화적 세계다. 마술적이며, 신화적인 세계 속 에서는 세계가 4차원적이다. 세계의 인과관계는 이 수준에서는 도저히 파악하고 느낄 수 없다. 인간은 그림에서 한발 물러나서 그림으로부터 지 배되는 방식을 그림을 지배하는 방식으로 바꾸고 싶었다. 그래서 발명한 것이 문자이다. 문자는 그림 속의 이미지를 밖으로 찢어내 선적으로 배 열시킨 이미지의 설명 수단이다. 이미지가 선적으로 설명되면서 인간의 삶은 마술에서 역사로 바뀐다. 인간은 역사적 감각을 통해서 세계의 인 과관계를 파악하게 되었지만 동시에 인과관계를 개선해야 하는 의무를 갖게 되었다. (역사는 이성적 인간을 가능케 한 동시에 인간의 어깨에 무 거운 짊을 안겨주었다.) 무거운 역사로부터 더 나은 역사로 나아가기 위해서 문자보다 편리한 수단을 발명했다. 그것은 문자와 숫자가 섞인 알파 벳-숫자(alpha-numeric)의 체계이다. 이 알파벳, 숫자는 세계를 코드로 개념화시켰다. (codified world.) 코드화된 세계를 다시 디코드(decode)시 키면서 세계를 해석한다. 알파벳-숫자는 세계와 인간 사이의 필터이다. (이 필터로 세계를 걸러서 섭취한다.) 당연히 기술시대는 도래한다. (기술 시대는 축복이 아니라 열사로 가는 과정을 잊으려는 인간의 가엾은 제스처다.)

그러다가 컴퓨터 및 미디어 기술이 발명되면서 사진, 동영상, 영화, 컴퓨터 게임을 즐기게 되었다. 여기서 대단한 문제와 맞닥뜨리게 된다. 인 간의 시간관념, 즉 인과관계에 대한 관념이 바뀌게 된다. 특히 동영상은 시간을 조작해낸다. 과거-현재-미래로 흘러가다 일년이 순환되는 시간 의 관념이 미래-현재-다시 미래-과거로 뒤죽박죽 뒤섞인다. 이제부터 사람들은 역사적 사고를 하지 않는다. (역사의 의무에서 게임의 유희로 전 환한다.) 이러한 현상을 가리켜 우리는 탈역사적(post-historical) 유희라고 한다. 역사는 시간적 관념이다. 농업은 역사의 산물이다. 정치는 역사 의 산물이다. 경제도 역사의 산물이다. 이와 반대로 탈역사는 시간을 거스르려는 관념이다. 생태학은 탈역사의 산물이다. 정치를 의무가 아닌 게 임의 유희로 파악하려는 제스처는 탈역사의 산물이다. 스스로 책임지는 경제가 아니라 부모나 국가에게 경제 의무를 전가해버리는 유약함의 경 제도 탈역사의 산물이다. 탈역사는 마술에서 역사로 가는 순항을 다시 마술적 세계로 되돌린 거역의 논리다.

이제 앤드류 K 김이 의도적으로 인터넷에 떠돌아다니는 열악한 이미지(poor images)를 사용하여 회화로 재구성하는 이유가 무엇인지 명백 해진다. 그것은 차츰 실재와 구분할 수 없을 정도로 정교해지는 테크노크라시의 질식에서 우리를 환기시키려는 것이다. 열악하고 조악하게 깨 진 픽셀은 물론 낭만적이다. 작가는 1984년생이다. 그 이전의 어린이들은 물론 집밖에서 자연을 느끼면서 노는 놀이를 하였다. 그러나 작가는 그 이전 시대의 여느 어린이들과 다르게(자연 속의 실재 게임) 눈에 확연히 보이던 픽셀이미지의 게임(텔레비전과 컴퓨터 속의 가상게임)을 집에 서 즐기면서 자란 세대이다. 더군다나 미국으로 건너가 문화적 장벽을 느끼고 극복하면서 청춘을 보냈을 것이다. 그 이미지 게임들은 진정으로 친구였을 것이다. 작가가 픽셀이미지를 선택했던 이유는 이처럼 어린 날 느끼던 추억이자 감동 때문 일수도 있다. 그러나 이것은 잘못된 판단일 것이다. 왜냐하면 이러한 경향을 가리켜 미학에서는 센티멘탈리즘(sentimentalism)이라고 부르기 때문이다. 그런데 작가는 결코 센티멘탈리스 트가 아니다. 첫째, 너무도 훌륭한 부모님의 사랑을 듬뿍 받고 자란 사람이다. 둘째, 작가는 누구보다도 강하며 이성적이기(역사적) 때문이다.

(20세기의 사람만큼이나 의무로 가득 충만해있다. 그러나 작가의 감각과 세계의 운영방식은 21세기에 적합하다. 세련되어있다.)

작가의 예술정신은 우리가 처한 현실과 우리가 어디로 가는 지 아무도 모르는 세태 속에서 끊임없이 깨어나기 위한, 또 주위를 깨우려는 제 스처에서 맘껏 자라고 있다. 소크라테스가 민주정의 부당함을 일깨우려던 등에였다면, 앤드류 역시 테크노크라시의 로봇이 되어가는 우리를 깨 우치려는 등에일지도 모른다. 우리는 초기에 컴퓨터가 등장했을 때 깨지고 뭉개진 이미지가 컴퓨터 화면에 나타나기를 기다리고 또 기다렸다. 그것은 분명히 낭만적이었고 즐거웠다. 우리는 그것이 알파벳-숫자가 빚어낸 0과 1의 이진법의 코드라는 것을 알면서 좋아했다. 그러나 이제 우 리는 역사를 좋은 방향으로 개선시키기 위해서 일하는 것이 아니라(노동운동, 시민운동, 마르크스주의), 보다 더 정교한 컴퓨터를(우리가 사는 세계가 0과 1의 이진법이 만들어낸 속임수라는 사실을 잊게 해주는) 갖기 위해서 일한다. 따라서 우리나라에서 마르크스를 몰아낸 것은 안기부 (국정원) 요원이 아니라, 마이크로소프트사(삼성)의 기술개발직원이다. 그리고 우리가 이토록 기술을 개발시켜 극한으로 가야만 하는 본질적 이 유는 딱 한가지다.

지구는 황금시대에서 철의 시대로 진행한다. 자원과 에너지는 한정되어있다. 그리고 열사(heat death)로 간다. 줄어가는 이것을 끝까지 짜내 어 살아가면 기술은 절로 따라오게 된다. 그러니 기술이 발전되는 것을 보고 크게 기뻐할 것도 아니다. 기술은 인간이 죽는다는 사실을 잠시 잊 게 해주는 괜찮은 방법이다. 바로 기술을 눈앞에 노정시켜 우리는 죽는다는 사실을 잊고 안락해한다. 망각인 동시에 위로인 것이다. 그런데 앤드 류는 깨지고 뭉개진 픽셀의 아름답던 추억을 상기시키면서 깨우친다. 우리는 죽는다. 열사로 간다. "죽음을 기억하라. 하지만 동시에 나의 어린 날도 기억하라." 이런 모든 의미의 층위가 투명하게 축적되어 있기 때문에 앤드류의 그림은 놀랍도록 아름다운 것이다.

The Greatness of Poorness: Andrew K Kim

Andrew K Kim deliberately collects poor images from the internet. Nowadays, people enjoy Hollywood movies and even real time sport matches with their computers. They also consider these devices, such as monitors of desktops, laptops or smart phones, as there“windows”. (People take and consider it so naturally.) But like how we know images reflected from mirrors are not a reality but a reflection of reality, so are the images we see on these monitors. Moreover, the images we see in mirrors are a physical phenomenon of lights on the surfaces of metal or liquid. Whether the images are distorted or not, we've lived with the phenomenon and now it has become second nature to us. However, images from computers should be discussed in a different context. These images are“techno - images”; these images have become so natural to us, they are like water to fish. We can call this the absurdity of the fish ignoring the water around it; or Hyperfamiliarity, meaning extreme familiarity. In hyperfamiliarity, we forget the problems of our age. We are the insiders of our age and insiders do not recognise their surroundings. On the other hand, we can still sense the feeling of our current age very vividly. (The feeling we get from our present age feels very colourful but we are unaware of how this era will be represented in history. As outsiders, we know the meaning of the Joseon dynasty era but we cannot feel it as vividly as now.) I would like to discuss the purpose of deliberately collecting poor and blurred images, and deliberately painting over those images, whilst expressing my views on Andrew K Kim's works.

His work shows us two big main issues. The first one is related to the second law of thermodynamics. The other is about the process and development of the media we chose -Technology. These two issues are two sides of the same coin.

Hesiod’s Golden Age is like the Garden of Eden. It is the age of plenty. Nature was so plentiful that humanity could consume as much as they wanted, and families can prosper. However, eventually humanity over-consumed and the production of nature was not enough- they needed to rely on reason. Since then, people needed to ex-ist from nature as it is. This means that people needed to suffer from their separation from nature. From this process of suffering came humanities approach to reason. Existance also means existence outside of nature, being isolated from it. This was the dawning of the Silver Age, where reason has become the people's revenge against the gods. It is the age when humanity began fighting against nature; a nature that is indestructible. In time, people started to have different opinions about this indestructible nature. With these different opinions, finally, they started to fight against each other. Heroes try to unite these people (the Heroic Age), yet, even these heroes are deceived by immorality, corruptions, and deceptions (the Iron age has lasted until now.) The development of current technology has become a representation of humanity's desperate gesture in this stage of exhausting nature's resources and energy. The more important matter here is the process of media development; mankind has been producing things since the beginning of their own history.

The first works of mankind was probably the Venus of Willendorf or the ancient comb ceramics. This relationship of the human hand and nature has developed from concrete senses to abstract concepts. People started to paint after this abstract concept settled. Art belongs to the world of magic and myths. In this world, everything is 4th dimensional. People cannot comprehend

the causality of the world in this 4th dimensional standard. They wanted to develop their relationship with art from a dominated stage to a dominat-ing stage. Then they invented letters. Letters are the explanation of images, by tearing the image from the picture and arranging lines that reference it. Now the image can be explained linearly, the life of humanity changed from myth to history. Now people have a historical knowledge to understand causality but at the same time are obligated to improve causality themselves. (History enabled people to reason and gave them a huge duty, or burden, as well.) So they invented a more practical method to improve their heavy, difficult, arduous History: alpha-numeric system, which is a mixture of alphabets and numbers.

They conceptualised the world with this alpha-numeric system called a codified world. Now they interpret the coded world by decoding it again. This system acts as a filter between humans and the world. (People filter the world and ingest the filtered information). The technology age has come. (Technology is not a blessing but a desperate gesture by humans to delay the heat death.)

With the invention of computers and media technologies, now people enjoy digital pictures, videos, movies and games with their computer and this is the point we see a huge problem. It changes the concept of time- the concept of causality. Especially, the way video images fabricate time. The concept of time which used to go from past to future has been mixed up. Future to the present to the past, future to past…etc.

Now, people don't think historically. (The historical duty has been converted to game play.) We call it Post-historical play.

History is a time concept. Agriculture is a product of history. Politics is a product of history. Economy is a product of history as well. But post-history goes against time. Ecology is a product of post-history. The attitude of taking politics as game play is a product of post-history. An economy which is not responsible for itself and shifts the responsibility to the government or parents is also a product of post-history. Post-history has put the world back to the magical world from historical world. It is a logic of insubordination.

It is clear why Andrew K Kim is using poor images from the Internet and making it into works of art. He is trying to ventilate the world of suffocating technocracy which is becoming exquisitely realistic. The pixels of the poor and the shoddy are very romantic.

He was born in 1984. Kids before him played outside around nature. But his generation enjoyed the rise of computer games and TV shows with pixelised images. Besides, he must have grown up in the states as a Korean American feeling the cultural barrier.

Those pixelised images must have been his true friends. You might think that the reason why he chose the poor images could be a nostalgic emotion of his youth. But I don't think that is the case. In aesthetics, we call it sentimentalism. And Andrew K Kim is never a sentimentalist. First, he grew up in a loving home. Secondly, he is a very strong and reasonable (historical) man. (He is as responsible as people from the 20th Century but his sense and operation method is very 21st century. Very sophisticated.)

Andrew K Kim's spirit of art is expanding infinitely in this world of chaos where nobody knows where we are and which direction we are going, with the endless effort to awaken himself and people around him. As Socrates was a gadfly which aroused the Athenian democracy, Andrew K Kim might be another gadfly which awakens us when everybody is becoming like a robot of technocracy. When the computer first appeared, we waited and waited for the computer monitor to show us those pixelised, poor images. It was definitely a very romantic and enjoyable experience, even though we knew that the world in the computer was made of only 0's and 1's. Now we work not to make a better history (such as labor campaigns, citizens’ campaigns, and Marxism etc.), but to make a better, exquisite computer which helps us forget that we are living in a world of illusions with 0's and 1's. The one who drove Marxism out of town is actually Microsoft, not the agency for national security planning. And there is only one essential reason for us to develop our technology to the extreme.

The earth is moving from the Golden age to the Iron Age and its resources and energy are limited. It is leading to Heat death. It is so natural that technology has developed rapidly when the resources are decreasing. It is not a pleasant change. It is only an okay way to make us momentarily forget that we are actually dying. With high technology before our eyes, we feel less unsettled.

It gives us oblivion and comfort at the same time. But Andrew K Kim's work brings back the beautiful nostalgia of the poor, broken and pixelised images. We are dying. We are leading to heat death.“Remember your mortality. But remember your youth as well." With all these amazing layers of meanings, Andrew K Kim’s works are stunningly beautiful.

Artist Statement The poor image is a copy in motion. It's quality is bad, overused, inaccurate and unclear. Its been circulated, cropped and altered for the purpose of being admired, to be loathed, or to represent a nostalgic connection with the image. A poor image can recall a history, a freedom from control, or a long journey of mass circulation simulating a universal visual language. They give a nostalgic presence, yet they are liberated from the standards of high definition.

I see the poor quality of an image open to storytelling and play. My work is inspired by poor images and the essence the condition of the image brings. I'm interested in working with these poor images and how I can alter their context. Through manipulating, appropriating, and negotiating between the poor image and painting, I'm expressing a sense of human presence and creative labor.
