외상과 독백으로써의 자기 은유를 넘다

홍경한 | 미술평론가 1. 참다운 내 것에 조타를 맞추고,‘우리 자신을 우리 자신일수록 해주는 일 속에서의 행복’을 위해 볼테르 (Voltaire)는“인간은 자신의 정원을 가꾸어야 한다.”고 했다. 프랑스의 대표적인 지성으로 손꼽히는 프레데릭 르누 아르(Frederic Lenoir) 역시‘행복이란 그 자체로서의 삶을 사랑하는 것’이라고 말했다. 하지만 현실이 그처럼 예측 가능하게 계몽적이라면 얼마나 좋을까. 『행복을 철학하다(Happiness: A Philosopher’ s Guide)』(2014)에서 르누아르는 우화 속 노인과 마찬가지로 행복 은 결국 우리 안에 있다고 이야기하나, 그것이 긍정적인 결과로 이어지기까지의 과정은 그리 녹록하지 않다. 생태주 의적 관점에서 인간사란 오히려 상처와 번민, 쓸쓸함과 고통의 나날이 눈부신 트라우마로 남아 지속되기/ 되어 왔기 때문이다. 그러므로 자신을 진정으로 소유하고 잠재적인 존재를 드러내며, 상처 따윈 전혀 없이 더 실제적인 인간으로써의 행복을 이룬다는 건 매초, 매시 부딪히며 살아가는 인간에겐 이상화한 샤르데냐(Sardegna)의 단지에 불과할 뿐이 다. 어쩌면 그건‘즐겁다’,‘기쁘다’와 같은 형용사를 주술처럼 읊조리는 공허함이며, 짧지만 즐거움을 가져다주는 인공자연을 구축하는 일과 진배없다. 혹은 여신 베누스(Venus)가 곡물의 신 아도니스(Adonis)에게 반하여 그를 납 치한 후 한순간에 지고 말 꽃으로 바꾸어 놓은‘아도니스의 정원’에 잠시 목말라 하는 것인지도 모른다. 물론 실체 적 삶과 큰 관련 없는 하나의 텅 빈 광주리 혹은 항아리일 수도 있고. 이러한 측면에서 볼 때 작가 김유정의‘정원’은 사람의, 현대인들의, 규격화된 일상을 관상식물로 치환해 욕망하 는 식물로‘재번역’한 결과이다. 평면화 된 자연물을 배경으로 여러 정체불명의 인물들이 그림자처럼 등장하는 작 품 <Paradox>에서도 언뜻 읽을 수 있듯, 그것은 획일화된 일상이 강요되는 현대인들의 씁쓸함을, 그들이 가두어 놓 은 관상식물을 통해 반증하는 것이며“공산품처럼 규격화된 우리들의 삶과 고민을 자연적인 물질로 승화시키는 것” 과 다름 아니다. 즉, 삶에 관한 작가적 의식과 소고(小考), 일종의 회화적 랜더링(rendering)이 바로 김유정의‘정원’ 시리즈인 것이다. 삶에 관한 작가적 의식과 소고(小考). 그렇다면 김유정이 지정하는‘삶’은 어떤 모습일까. 우선‘삶’이라는 단어 자체는 낯설지 않다. 많은 작가들이 삶을 주요 소재로 삼는다. 그러나 친숙함이 곧 명쾌한 해답과 근친하는 건 아니 며, 이성에 의한 해석이 실체의 파악을 도모하지도 않는다. 어쩌면 삶이란 모호함, 그 자체일 수 있으며 혹은 매일 자신의 묘비명과 자서전을 써 내려가는 여정인지도 모른다. 혹은 플라톤(Platon)의 주장처럼 무언가를 얻기 위해 잃 어가는 것일 수도 있다. 그럼에도 분명한 건 우린 삶의 고통에서 자유롭지 못하다는 점이다. 아니, 늘 그 유무형의 무게에 억눌린 채 탈주와 속박을 오간다는 사실이다. 흥미롭게도 김유정의 정원은 그‘삶’의 중앙을 관통한다. 세월의 텃밭에서 자란 인연과 관계망을 통해 자신의 삶 을 헤아리고, 회벽에 날카롭게 그리드 된 철필의 흔적처럼 나와 관계된 일상의 얼룩들을 독자적 표상(생존조건)으로 재구성한다. 실제로도 작가는 삶이라는 단어 아래 나와 부대끼는 타인들과 사물들을 공유하며, 그 미세한 떨림을 전 신적인 욕망과 수없는 물음을 그림이라는 매제로 여민다. 특히 삶의 다양성 가운데 자신을 중심으로 한 내용들을 다 이어리마냥 펼쳐놓곤, 그것을 근간으로 관계를 환기시키는 방식으로 오늘의 우리를 소환한다. 따라서 김유정의 정 원 연작은‘일상을 텃밭으로 자라는 상처와 치유의 시선’이라고 할 수 있다.

2. 김유정의 작품에는 일상의 단면과 감정, 기억과 회한들이 교차되어 있다. 인간사회에서 느끼는 내면적 병과 외상, 아픔과 슬픔이 녹아 있는 반면 희망과 절망, 실존과 허상 등이 이입되어 있다. 최근 설치와 사진작업을 병행한 와이어 드로잉 <Floating>(2015), <Alternative plant-love>(2015)와 같은 작업에선 사랑과 꿈과 같은 명사들이 여타 1)

그림 속 빼곡하게 자리한 식물들의 잎사귀처럼 촘촘히 새겨놓고 있다 . 물론 그건 생활에서 느끼는 감정들을 소탈하게 적시한 것이지만 어떤 알 수 없는 희원을 표현한 것이기도 하다. 그러나 본질적으로 그 낱낱의 상징들(사회적 관계성을 띤 구성원으로써의 식물-박제화된 온실 혹은 건축물-그 내부 에 똬리를 튼 채 살아가는 세상 등)의 이 현재의 투영-존재성의 기록임은 변하지 않는다.(2015년 작 <Gray Garden> 과 <Framework>를 동시에 교합한 느낌으로 보면 보다 쉽게 이해될 수 있다.) 무채색 위주의 회벽에 뾰족한 도구로 날카롭게 또는 투박하게 긁어낸 흔적들이 하나의 생채기와 갈음되는 것 마냥, 그의 작품의 출발점은 우리네 삶 이면 에 놓인 신산(辛酸)의 기표로서 작동한다. 김유정의 작가노트를 보면 위와 같은 해석을 뒷받침 하는 대목을 발견할 수 있다. 일례로 그는“성장하고 성숙하 기 위해 우리는 자의 및 타의 아래 다양한 상황과 시도에 처해지는데, 생채기는 우리의 내면과 삶의 현장을 넘나들며 종전보다 바쁘게 활동한다.”고 적고 있다. 이는 그가 어째서 굳이‘긁음’과‘훑음’,‘할큄’을 중요한 표현행위로 삼 고 있는지 알려준다. 다시 말해, 그가 긁고 훑고 할퀴는 것은 상처받고 살아가는 우리네 초상의 짙은 배어듦(내적 상 2)

처들의 가시화)이면서 치유를 기원하는 작가의 의중, 중용(中庸)의 태도가 내포된 결과 라고 할 수 있다는 것이다. 때문에 식물이 잘 가꾸어진 관형(觀形)의 정원은 바로 치유의 공간이자, 안락함을 선물하는 식생의 무대, 레비나 스(Emmanuel Levinas)의‘흔적(trace)’이라는 개념이 이입 가능한 장소이면서 한편으론 허무하고 불편함이 노출된 외계의 시공으로 번역된다. 김유정이“인공적이나 끊임없이 알맞은 조건을 만들어 가는 따뜻한 정원을 발견해 잠시 나마 안정을 취하고 재생하기도 한다.”면서도“부조리하되, 진실이 되어버리기도 하는 모순을 목격, 침묵하면서 삶 의 그늘에 지친 영혼을 잠시 맡겨두는 곳”으로 설명하는 것도 같은 맥락이다. 이러한 관점에서 볼 때 김유정의 작업은 스스로에게 솔직하되 심각하거나 자극적인 언어를 사용하지 않으면서도 3)

삶의 진정한 가치를 열람케 하는 매력이 있다 . 규명하고 행동하지만 고정시키지는 않으며, 잊고 지내는 일상에서 실존을 불러들이고 성찰을‘개간’하는 특징을 함유한다. 특히 우리네 삶에 부유하는 다양한 것들에 대한 회고를 오 늘에 반추해 새로운 의제를 도출시킴으로써 작가적 가치관을 명료화 한다는 점은 인상적이다. 더구나 묘사 위주의 겉과는 달리 그 내부엔 현세를 살아가는 우리에게 삶의 방식에 대한 여러 유의미한 지점을 열거하고 있다는 것은 확 실히 눈에 띄는 부분이다.

1) 작품 <Paradox>와 <Gray Garden>에서 엿보이는, 흐트러지듯 질서를 지닌 그 하나하나의 장면들은 흡사 누구에 겐 지독하기만 한 삶을, 누구에겐 살며 살아가는 짧고도 긴 여정 속에서 인간이 겪어야할 복잡함이 비춰지고, <Incubator> 시리즈에서는 사건에 관한 편리(片利)와 내적 욕망 등이 얽히고설킨 미완의 거푸집처럼 다가온다.

2) 덧붙이자면 적어도 이 지점에서 이젠 외상과 마주친 주체의 발언-자기 독백적인 은유의 단계는 넘어 서고 있다. 고통과 절망에 관한 해결책을 묻지는 않는다. 단지 타자 측의 목소리를 염두에 두고, 사유할 수 있는 거리감을 제공 하는 계단으로까지 나아가고 있다.

3) 자주 강조하는 것이지만, 사실 삶의 투영이 진실하게 반영되지 않은 작품이란 미를 가장한 시각적 쾌락, 혹은 고 통을 전달하는 가식적이거나 불편한 매개로 남겨질 가능성이 크다. 사유를 담아내지 못하는 예술이란 껍데기의 재 현이요, 편애된 성공일 확률이 높다. 예술 표현에 있어 중요한 것은 그 방식이 어떤 프로세스를 거치든 예술가의 경 험과 정신세계를 바탕으로 한 자아의식이 드러나야 한다는 점이며, 예술적 실현의지가 미적 철학과 미의식 아래 이 입되어 존재해야만 한다는 점이다. 우리가 흔히 궁금해 하는 좋은 작품이란 그런 범주에 들어맞는 것들이다.

그래서 그의 그림들은 현실에 존재하고 서로 관련하면서 작용하는 개개의 존재(각각의 식물들과 사물들, 어둠과 밝음-덮음과 비워냄의 이중성으로써의 존재)를 정원으로 묶어 언급하는 동시에‘나는 이미 만인에 관여 되어 있으 며’현재의 내가 전체의 나일 수도 있음을 기술하는 전개를 밟는다. 또한 인간 존재와 인간적 현실의 의미를 구체적 인 형상으로 재구성함으로써 우리는 곧 가능존재라기 보단 보편적 실현존재임을 가리키기도 한다. 그리고 그 표상 은 언제나 종적의 이탈을 지시할 뿐만 아니라, 일정한 구조 내에선 자유로움으로 도출된다. 작가는 그곳에 느낌과 감성, 일정한 스토리를 내재시키며, 작거나 큰 화면에 둔탁하고 곱지 않은 결을 험하게, 허나 따뜻한 저의와 공통의 가치 아래 표상화한다.

3. 둔탁하고 곱지 않은 결을 험하게, 허나 따뜻한 저의와 공통의 가치 아래에서의 표상화 는 김유정 만의 독특한 기법인 프레스코(fresco)로 구현된다. 그는 이 기법의 어원처럼‘신선하게’다루는데, 채 마르지도 않은 회벽에 주어 진 시간 내 사물을 묘사하고 재현하기 위해 채색 대신 긁기를 선택한다. 이는 앞서도 언급한 것처럼 외부로부터의 5)

손상과 상실에 직접적으로 연결된다 . 옛 기법을 오늘에 재현하는 것은 시간의 흐름을 귀납하기 위한 장치이며(물론 작가적 변별력을 부여하는 기능도 없진 않다), 전통성의 현대적 번안이다. 그의 말마따나 한편으론“긁기를 통한 관상식물, 인공적인 풍경들의 재현은 빛과 생명력을 얻어 곧 우리의 인생”을 나타낸다. 그러면서도 작가는‘생존조건’에 필요한 요소들을 배척하지 않은 채 공유와 공감-회생의 틈을 거듭 드러내 보인다. 즉, 피해갈 수 없는 경쟁과 복잡한 세상에 유기체로 살아가는 나와 우리네 삶의 아픔에 시선을 고정시키고 있지만, 세상과 적극적으로 대화하고 나아가기 위해, 상처받은 이들이 잠시 라도 쉴 수 있는 안락한 정원-상실을 회복할 수 있는 기회 역시 필요함을 역설하고 있다는 것이다. 이는 그의 2015년 작품 <공생>에서도 잘 드러난다. 마지막으로 그의 그림에서 중요한 건, 김유정의 정원 시리즈는 그림을 그리고 시를 쓰는 행위와 마찬가지로 본능 적인 미메시스적 욕구와 가깝다는 것이다. 이를 아리스토텔레스의 미학 개념을 빌어 이해하자면 그의 정원은 여러 측면에서 삶의 본질을 모방(Mimesis)하는 것과 좁은 거리를 유지한다고 볼 수 있다. 그리고 그의 정원은 보편적-사 실적 정원이 아니라, 프랜시스 베이컨(Francis Bacon)의 말처럼 인생의 사막 같은 소용돌이 속에서 평화롭고 아늑한 시공을 개방해놓은 확장의 정원이라는 것에 방점이 있다. 이를 달리 말하면, 그의 근작들은 더 이상‘외상’에 대한 차가운 직시,‘독백적인 자기 - 그리기로서의 은유’는 아닌 셈이다.

Beyond the metaphor of self in the form of trauma and monologue

Kyounghan Hong | art critic 1. As Voltaire said, "we must cultivate our own garden" to aim at the true ourselves and find 'happiness in what leads us to ourselves'. Frédéric Lenoir, a representative French intellectual, said also that 'happiness consists in living the life as it is'. However, if only the reality would be so enlightening as to be predictable!

Lenoir suggests in Happiness: A Philosopher's Guide (2014), following the old man of the fable, that happiness lies in ourselves, but to achieve a positive outcome is not so easy. For, from the ecological viewpoint, human history has been lasting, still lasts, as dazzling traumas left behind by days of hurts, agonies, drearinesses and pains.

Therefore, as for a man struggling every hour, every second, it is nothing but an idealized jar of Sardegna to own one's true self, reveal the potential being, and achieve happiness as a more practical man without any wound at all. It might be to feel empty, reciting adjectives such as 'happy', 'pleasant' like spells, and create an artificial nature built for some momentary pleasures. Or it could be being, for a while, thirsty for 'the garden of Adonis' where the goddess Venus, in love with the vegetation god Adonis, kidnapped him and transformed him into a flower which would fall off in a second. Of course, it would be also an empty basket or jar that has little to do with the substantial life.

Viewed from this aspect, 'the Garden' of Yujung Kim is the outcome of 'reinterpreting' men's, modern men's standardized daily life as a desiring plant, substituting an ornamental plant for it. As we can catch a glimpse of it in <Paradox> where several unidentified characters appear like shadows, the Garden reflects the dreariness of modern men forced into the monotonous daily life by means of the ornamental plants they cooped up, and it is no less than "sublimating into natural materials our life, standardized like industrial products, and worries."

Artistic consciousness and modest introspection of life, a sort of pictorial rendering, that is what 'the Garden' series of Yujung Kim stands for.

Artistic consciousness and modest introspection of life. Then, what the life would be like, as it is designated

by Yujung Kim? First of all, the word 'life' itself looks familiar. Many artists use life as their major theme.

However, the familiarity doesn't necessarily get along with a lucid answer, and the interpretation by reason doesn't inevitably promote an understanding of the truth. Maybe the life is the ambiguousness itself, or it might be an itinerary including daily writing of one's epitaph and autobiography. Or could it be to lose something to get something else as Plato asserts. Nonetheless, we are not evidently free from the torments of life. We are actually fluctuating between escape and imprisonment, oppressed by the weight, tangible or not, of life.

It is interesting to see how the Garden of Yujung Kim penetrates the heart of that 'life'. It fathoms the life through the network of connections and relations grown in the kitchen garden of time, and reconstructs a unique representation(survival needs) from the daily spots related to myself, as a steel pen traces sharp grids on the grey wall. The artist actually shares things with other people interacting closely with me under the name of life, and adjusts, with the medium of painting, the subtle vibrations of life, desires of whole body, and numerous questions. The Garden summons us today in a way to unfold, like a diary, the contents focused on oneself in the midst of the diversity of life and remind us of the relations based on them. The Garden series of Yujung Kim can be thus defined as 'a look of injuries and cures grown in the kitchen garden of daily life'.

2. Slices of daily life and emotions, memories and regrets intersect in the works of Yujung Kim. They embody internal illnesses and external wounds, pains and griefs, suffered in the human society, while they introduce hope and despair, existence and illusion. In her recent works such as <Floating>(2014) and <Alternative plant-love>(2015), which combine the installation and photography, are densely engraved nouns like 'love' and 'dream', just like other pictures are packed with leaves of plants 1).

Of course, the works are unaffected revelations of daily emotions, but also expressions of some unknown hope. However, their individual symbols (plants as members entrusted with social relationship, taxidermied greenhouse or building, world anchored in its inside) remain essentially the reflections of the present - records of the existence. (We can more easily understand it, if we look at the works in 2015, <Gray Garden> and <Framework> at the same time as a united one.) The starting point of the works operates as a signifier of the hardships residing behind our life, as a wound is substituted with traces scratched sharply or roughly with pointed tools on the plastered wall dominated by achromatic colors.

In the artiste statement of Yujung Kim, we can find passages that sustain the above interpretation. For instance, she writes that "to grow and mature we are going through, of or against our will, various situations and attempts, but scratches work more busily than ever, hovering between our inner world and fields of life".

This lets us know why the artist uses 'scraping', 'stripping', 'scratching' as her main expressive behaviors. In other words, as she scrapes, strips, and scratches, our portraits ooze out thickly (visualization of inner wounds), the artist's intention of praying for healing, her attitude of the golden mean is also exposed 2).

That is why the visual garden, well grown with plants, is a space of healing, a comforting stage of vegetation, a place where the notion of 'trace' by Emmanuel Levinas can be imported, while it can be translated into an extraterrestrial time and space exposing nothingness and discomfort. Yujung Kim says that she "discovers a warm garden, which is artificial but endlessly creating suitable conditions, and takes there a temporary rest and even regenerates", but she also explains it as "a place where she leaves momentarily her soul weary of the shadows of life, observing the absurd paradoxes which sometimes turn out to be true, and keeping silent over them".

From this point of view, Yujung Kim's works attract us by being frank about herself, avoiding the use of serious or provocative language, but allowing us to read the authentic values of life. They investigate and act, but don't decide. Their characteristic lies in summoning the existence from the forgotten daily life and 'cultivating' the introspection 3). They are particularly impressive when they clarify the artistic values by ruminating today over reminiscences of various things floating in our life and setting a new agenda. Their inner part, unlike the description-oriented exterior, certainly claims our attention, enumerating several significant points in our current way of life.

Therefore, her works mention individual beings (individual plants and things, dual existence as the darkness and the light, covering and evacuating), grouping them in a garden, which exist in the reality and interact on 1. Each scene, revealed in the works <Paradox> and<Gray Garden>, and organized in an deranged order, reflects one by one an ever-awful life to someone, and shows, to some others, the complexity a man should confront in both short and long itinerary of life. The <Incubator> series comes to us as an unfinished cast intermingled with one sided gains and internal desires about the events.

2. Add to this the fact that at least at this point the artist goes beyond the stage of the subject's statement confronted with the external wounds the stage of metaphor close to monologues. She doesn't ask for the solution to agonies and despairs. She simply takes a step to provide some distance for thinking, bearing in mind the other's voice.

each other, and, at the same time, move forward to assert that 'I am already related to everybody' and the present I can be the whole I. They also indicate that we are rather universal real beings than possible beings by reconstructing, as specific shapes, the meaning of the human existence and the human reality. The representation always points at the deviation from the trace, as it is also delivered as freedom in an established structure. The artist establishes there, making them inherent, feelings, sensitivity, and specific stories, and represents the dull and coarse texture on a small or big screen, roughly but with a warm intention and respecting common values.

3. The representation 4), handling roughly the dull and coarse texture with a warm intention and respecting common values, is realized by the fresco, Yujung Kim's distinctive technique. She uses it 'freshly' as the origin of the technique indicates, and chooses scratching instead of painting to describe and represent objects in a limited time on the wet plaster wall. This is, as mentioned above, directly connected to the injury and loss from the outside 5).

To reproduce today an old technique is a way to induce the flow of time (it has also the ability to accord the artistic distinction), a modern adaptation of the traditionality. As the artist says, on the one hand, "the representation of the ornamental plants, of the artificial landscapes, gaining, through scratching, the light and the vital force, reflects our life itself". On the other hand, the artist reveals repeatedly cracks for the sharing and the sympathy-revival, without excluding the necessary elements of 'the survival needs'. That is, fixing her eye on the pains of life we and I are suffering from as living organisms in a complex world of inevitable competitions, the artist also urges the necessity for a comfortable garden where the injured can take a momentary rest to communicate actively with the world and move forward, an opportunity to recover the loss.

Her work in 2015, <Symbiosys> is a good example.

Finally, it is important to note that the Garden series of Yujung Kim is more like of an instinctive mimesis desire, just like an act of painting pictures and writing poems. To understand it, borrowing the Aristotle's aesthetic notion, we can say that her Garden maintains, in many aspects, a short distance from the mimesis of the essence of life. The emphasis of her Garden is thus laid, not on a universal-realistic garden, but on a garden of expansion that opens up a peaceful and cozy time and space in the vortex of life like desert, as Francis Bacon said. In other words, her latest works are no more a cold look at 'the trauma', 'metaphor of monologic self-painting'.

3. We have repeatedly emphasized that a piece of art, when it doesn't contain the authentic reflections of life, has a fair chance to remain a visual pleasure masked with beauty, an affected or uncomfortable vehicle delivering pains. It is quite likely that an art, which doesn't incorporate thoughts, ends up as the representation of a shell, a success endowed with the partial love. What is important in an artistic expression is to reveal the self-consciousness based on the artist's experiences and spiritual world, no matter which process its method involves, and show an artistic will of realization transfused with the artistic philosophy and aesthetic consciousness. Good art works we are often curious about fall into that kind of category.

4. Substitution of the plants for the human history, artificial implantation and exclusive possession of nature, ignition and expansion of the interior emotions, etc.

5. Thus, the technique allows us to look into many things along the orbit of time, and even specifies the question of emotional mass that lead us to substitute, compare, and verify our own lives, each one different from each other.
