기억과 상상으로 그린 풍경의 풍경 박순영 / 서울시립미술관 학예연구사

어린아이였을 때 어떤 색을 보면 가슴이 쿵하고 내려앉거나 심하게 떨렸다. 그 떨림의 기억을 표현 하고 싶은 건지도 모른다. - 작업노트 한상미 작가는 풍경을 그린다. 그 풍경은 아침이슬을 한껏 머금은 오전의 화사한 들판이기도 하고, 한갓진 오후의 정원이기도 하다. 그곳에는 나무가 서 있고, 풀밭이 펼쳐져 있으며, 바람이 불고, 햇볕 이 비취며, 리듬이 흐른다. 평온한 풍경이다. 화가를 통해 그려진 하나의 풍경은 어린아이에겐 마냥 뛰어노는 것만으로도 좋을 평화로운 놀이터이고, 연인에겐 달콤한 입맞춤의 기운을 북돋는 인적 드문 풀밭이며, 부모에겐 가족나들이를 꿈꾸게 하는 야외이다. 또한, 나이든 사색가에겐 한적한 오후의 산 책하고 싶은 사유의 장소이고, 유목민에겐 발딛고 살아가는 삶의 터전이며, 여행가에겐 도달해야 할 대지이자 잠시 쉬어가는 저녁녘의 안식처이다. 그렇게 하나의 풍경은 누군가에 의해 다른 의미와 이 야기를 갖게 된다. 풍경은 그런 것이다. 그녀가 그리는 풍경은 전반적으로 평온하고, 안정적이며, 밝고, 따스한 느낌이 든다. 그녀는 1996 년 1회 개인전을 시작으로 지금까지 여섯 번의 개인전에서 줄곧 나무와 풀밭을 그렸다. 풍경 속에는 간간히 얼룩무늬 말이 있고, 풍경의 아늑함과 평온함을 유지하기 위한 듯 하늘과 맞닿은 들녘의 지평 선이나 중첩되는 언덕의 경계에는 담벼락이 있다. 풍경에 등장하는 삐죽대듯 뻗어있는 나무와 풀들은 마치 살아서 움직이듯 하고, 담은 외부세계로부터 정원을 보호해주듯 단단하게 서 있으며, 얼룩말은 비록 풀들이 뾰족하지만 이 보호막 덕분에 안전하게 맘껏 뛰노는 한가로운 오후의 풍경이다. 최근의 작품에서 보이는 변화가 있다면 풍경의 성격을 규정할 만한 얼룩말은 보이지 않고, 담벼락은 건축물 의 구조를 갖고 풍경 안에 하나의 공간을 만들기도 하며, 전에 없던(실제로는 늘 있었겠지만) 그림자 가 등장한다. 이번 개인전의 작품들은 이러한 변화를 확실히 확인하게 한다. <P.180 작은 정원-바람 의 칸타타>의 작은 나무들 옆으로 늘어진 그림자는 빛의 강도를 더해 풍경에 흐르는 리듬에 강약을 부여하고, <바람이 나를 부른다>, <바로크 댄스를 꿈꾸는 정원>, <정원 속에 숨어있는 또 다른 풍경들 >에서 화폭의 아래편에 짙게 드리운 그림자는 시선을 풍경 안으로 몰입하게 하면서 화폭의 깊이가 광 활하게 펼쳐지도록 하고, 동시에 화면에 비추는 빛을 더욱 강하게 하여 풍경을 더욱 환하게 하는 효과 를 갖게 한다. 공간감이 더해진 덕분에 이전의 작품에서 풍경의 경계에 자리한 담벼락은 하나의 성 (城)과 같이 건축의 구조를 띠면서 풍경 안에 또 다른 하나의 풍경을 만들어 내고, 나무와 풀의 존재감 은 더해졌으며, 이로 인해 얼룩말과 같은 다른 등장인물이 없이도 풍경은 그 자체로도 의미를 지닌 하 나의 장면이 된다. 여기서 풍경은 더 이상 배경이 아니다. 이러한 강렬한 빛과 공간감은 <오후 4시의 산책>이나 <여름의 치유>, <멀리보다>와 같이 작품의 제목만으로도 확인 할 수 있다. 작가는 그림을 그리면서 항상 바로크 음악을 듣는다고 말한다. 작품의 제목에서 알 수 있듯이 바로 크 시대의 양식은 그녀에게 많은 영향을 주었을 것이다. 살아있는 듯 활기차게 뻗어있는 나무나, 겹겹 이 펼쳐진 언덕의 곡선이나, 빛과 바람을 이용해 화면에 강약을 주어서 리듬을 강화한 표현 등이 그렇 다. 더욱이 예전에 비해 화폭 안에 적극적으로 자리한 건축물을 보면, 이전과는 다르게 풍경과 조화를

이루도록 그렸다는 점에서도 확인할 수 있다. 건축구조는 선적인 표현으로 이루어지는 데, 이는 바로 크의 회화적인 표현과 대립되는 고전적인 르네상스 미술의 형식과 연관된다. 이 두 양식을 비교한 뵐 .. 플린(Heinrich Wo lfflin)의 분석은 유명하다. 그는 선적인 표현과 회화적인 표현, 평면적인 구성과 깊 이 있는 구성, 폐쇄적인 형식과 개방적인 형식 등으로 두 양식을 구별했다. 그녀의 그림은 예전에 비 해 더욱 회화적이며, 깊이 있고, 개방적이다. 그러나 여기서 더 나아가 선적인 표현인 건축구조를 불 규칙적인 회화적 표현에 크게 자리하게 함으로써 고전주의와 바로크의 조화를 꾀했다고 할 수 있다. 이는 뵐플린 이후의 비평가들이 지적하듯이“고전주의를 기준으로 하여 그에 상반되는 것으로 바로 크를 취급한다는 것 자체가 틀린 일이다. 바로크와 고전은 물론 대립적인 관계에 있으나 그것은 마치 형제들이 돈독한 우애 안에서 티격태격하는 것과 같은 것이다”라는 관점까지도 작가가 수용하고 있 다고 할 수 있다. 이런 비평가의 논쟁은 차치하고, 그녀의 그림에서 바로크적인 표현이 두드러지는 것 은 사실이다. 그려진 대상도 그렇거니와, 형태와 색에서는 더욱 그렇다. 고전주의는 이상적인 미를 척 도로 삼았는데, 그에 반해 바로크는 절제의 불편함을 버리고 자유로운 형식과 리듬을 추구했기 때문 이다. 작가가 고백하듯이 어린 시절의‘떨림’, 그 기억을 표현하고 싶었던 만큼 화폭의 전반적인 분위기 는 어린아이의 미술 형식을 닮아있다. 형형색색으로 표현된 나무와 꽃은 마치 색종이를 오려서 표현 한 것 같고, 건축물의 구조는 단조롭고, 불손한 원근법에는 크게 개의치 않는 표현들이다. 그럼에도 한눈에 자연풍경이고, 정원이고, 하늘이고, 들녘이라는 것을 알 수 있는데 동심이 느껴질 정도로 상상 력이 부여된 풍경이기 때문이다. 상상력의 세계는“어린아이의 세계로 회귀하려는 성숙한 자만이 들 어 갈 수 있는 초록빛 낙원”이라는 어느 철학자의 글귀가 떠오른다. 문명의 이기 앞에서 상상력이 점 점 고갈되는 삶을 사는 시대에 그녀는 어릴 적 자신의 기억에 상상력을 부여해서 초록빛 낙원을 만들 고 있는 것이다. 한상미 작가는 우리가 풍경이라 부르고 낙원이라 꿈꾸는 자연을 그린다. 하지만 자연은 그녀가 기 억하고 돌아가고 싶은 어린 시절의 그것과 다를 수 있다. 어른에게는 폭력의 대상이 되고, 연인에게는 이별의 장소가 되며, 사색가에게는 염세를 유목민에게는 목숨을 담보한 사투의 장소일 수 있다. 그러 나 다시 어린아이가 될 수는 없으니, 우리가 그렇고 작가가 그렇듯 그런 두려운 세계에 목적 없이 발 을 내딛는 것은 어쩌면 여행자에게만은 가능할 수 있을지 모른다. 여행을 나서는 것은 미셸 옹프레 (Michel Onfray)의 글처럼“우리가 그 장소들에 의해서 선택하는 것이 아니라, 우리가 그 장소들에 의 해서 선택되는 것”이고,“우리 안에서 낯선 목소리로 말하는 명령에 복종 하는 것”이기 때문이다. 그 래서일까, 그녀는 여행을 좋아한다. 그림에 표현된 형상들은 여행을 통해 만난 낯선 문명의 사물들이 다. 보라색의 알리움 꽃과 라벤더, 노란 해바라기, 동그란 우산소나무와 초록빛 사이프러스, 그리고 정원 등, 이들은 그녀를 통해 어린 시절 떨림으로 화면에 옮겨졌다. 그리고 그들이 화면에서 마치 바 람과 빛에 환희하듯 우리를 환대하고 있는 느낌을 준다. 그렇게 그녀가 여행 중에 만났던 나무들, 바 람들, 꽃들이 그녀에게 그랬듯이, 이미 어른이 되어버린 우리들 또한 치유해주고 위로해줄 것이다.

When I was a child, my heart jumped or I vibrated when I saw some colors. I might want to express the memory of the vibration. - Work note Han, Sangmi draws a landscape. The landscape is a beautiful field wet with morning dew and a garden in a leisurely afternoon. Trees are there, the field is filled with grass, the wind blows, the sun shines, and the rhythm flows. It's a peaceful landscape. The landscape in her paintings is a peaceful playground for children, the secluded grass that makes the lovers kiss, and the field that makes the parents dream of a family picnic. Also, it's a place where an old thinker wants to take a walk in a free afternoon, a home for the nomad, and for travellers, it's not only a ground that they should come to but also a haven where they can take a rest at dark. A landscape has different meanings and stories for each. The landscape's like that.

The landscape in her paintings is generally peaceful, comfortable, bright, and warm. She hold her first exhibition in 1996 and continually drew the trees and grass in her six exhibitions. Some zebras are in the landscape, and the wall is along the horizon where the sky meets the ground, or along the hill that overlaps with the sky. They seem to keep the coziness and the peace. In the landscape, the branches and the grass that straggle out seem to come to life, and the wall seems to protect the garden from the outside world. Thanks to this protection, the zebras can gambol happily in the field even if the grass is sharp. It's a really peaceful afternoon. We can see the changes in her recent paintings. We can't see any zebras that show the feature of the landscape, the wall has a structure and makes room, and the shadows we haven't seen before(in fact, maybe there's always been) show up. The paintings of this exhibition, certainly, show the change. The shadows along the small trees in the painting p.180 A small garden - The wind's cantata(2015) make the light and the rhythm intensified in the landscape. In her paintings The wind calls me(2015), A garden dreaming baroque dances(2015), and The other landscapes hiding in the garden(2015), dark shadows that are cast deeply at the bottom draw viewers into the landscape and make the paintings deep and wide. Also, the shadows liven the landscape up by making the light stronger. The wall stood on the edge in the previous paintings. But the sense of space was added to the wall and the wall has a structure like a castle. It made another landscape in the landscape, the trees and the grass became more important, and the landscape is a meaningful scene without characters like zebras. The landscape is not the background anymore. We can see this intense light and the sense of space from the titles of her paintings A walk at 4 p.m.(2014), Healing in summer(2014) or Looking far away(2014).

The artist says that she always listens to the baroque music when she draws. Baroque style may greatly influence her, as the titles hint. We can see it in the lively and energetically stretched trees, the layers of round hills, and expressions to intensify the rhythm by

articulating the dynamics with the light and wind. And so is the structure, which takes its place more actively and is in harmony with the landscape in the painting. The building structure is made up of linear expressions, which is related to the classical style of ..

Renaissance art opposite to baroque pictorialization. The analysis of Heinrich Wo lfflin comparing these two styles is very famous. He said these two styles: from linear to painterly, from plane to recession, from closed form to open form, etc. Her paintings are more pictorial, deeper, more open than before. But, furthermore, she intends to be in harmony between classicism and baroque by making the building structure(or linear expressions) be a .. large part of pictorialization. We can say she accepts the critics' comment(post Wo lfflin) - It's wrong to think that baroque is opposite to classicism. They are surely in an opposite relationship, but this relationship is similar to the quarrel between friendly brothers. Apart from the critics' comment, it is true that baroque expressions stand out in her paintings. The characters are like that. The form and the colors are even more so. It's because ideal beauty is a measure of classicism, but baroque throws away the discomfort of moderation and pursues an unconstrained form and rhythm.

The artist wants to express her memories of vibration in her childhood, so the overall mood of her paintings looks like the works of children. The colorful trees and flowers look like the patchworks of colored papers, and the building structure is simple. The artist doesn't care about the perspective. Even so, we could tell, at a glance, what is the natural scenery, what is the garden, what is the sky, and what is the filed in her paintings. It's because the imaginative landscape makes us feel the innocence of childhood. It reminds me of a philosopher's phrase: The world of the imagination is“the green paradise that only the mature one who wishes to return to his childhood can enter.”Our imagination has dried up in the life filled with modern conveniences, but the artist tries to create her own paradise in her paintings based on her memories and imagination.

Han, Sangmi draws the nature, and we call the nature the landscape and we expect it to be a paradise. But the nature can be different from that of her childhood. It can be a place where lovers say good-bye, thinkers feel pessimistic, and the nomads fight desperately.

However, we can't go back to the time when you were young. It might be possible only for tourists to take their steps towards the scary world for nothing. Like Michel Onfray said, going on a trip is not‘we choose the place’but‘we are chosen by the place’and we obey the unfamiliar orders in ourselves. I think that's why she loves travelling. The characters in her paintings are the objects that she met on her journey. Purple allium, lavender, yellow sunflower, round pine, green cypress, and a garden drawn on her canvas show her childhood. And they make us feel warmly welcomed as they are happy with the wind and light. As the trees, wind and flowers that she met on her journey healed and comforted her, they will also heal and comfort us that already had grown up.
