Three different sculptors, different aesthetics, different three-dimensional propositions— all of them interrelated, nonetheless, despite their differences—come together in DIÁLOGO T RIDIMENSIONAL , an exhibition that combines the works of the Cuban-French Agustín Cárdenas, the Colombian Eduardo Ramírez Villamizar and the Uruguayan Pablo Atchugarry.

A common characteristic that unites them—each artist situated in his own period in time, with his own cultural and human circumstances—resides in the indissolubility of the universality and the historic-artistic level of their work. Working at different times and in different scenarios, these artists have maintained current fundamental canons of avant-garde trends in the history of art. Each of them is an “abstract” artist who has given form to marvels of modern art and who has ventured into areas connected to man’s and material endeavors. Each has contributed solutions to the objectivism of abstraction by manifesting the sensuality of cultures connected to the earth, to human beings, to the culture of a “symbolic” American continent that refuses to reduce its existence solely to phenomenological circumstances.

Connected to a society’s conscious reality, the trio formed by Cárdenas, Ramírez Villamizar and Atchugarry addresses man’s imagery with regards to a conscious perception of physical and spiritual space. Understanding, looking, seeing, the sculptures that will be occupying one same space, Galería Durban Segnini, offer the opportunity to participate in a dialog with art’s three-dimensional conceptual reality. A reality in which these creators provide fragments of unitary interests of the material and the emotional. A superior order of the visible is present in each of them. This order manifests itself in the tangible signs of cultures that have permeated the creation of a body of work connected to various strata of their historical development. We could speak, then, of a personal history bound to multicultural sectors. A history where the ancestral, especially as pertains to native cultures, becomes an intangible background of vertical totemic components and horizontal landscape components. Coincidentally, in their formative stage, the three of them traveled in principle through their own terrain, i.e., the culture of their country of origin. But they also took on new artistic-existential laws and regulations in other latitudes, where they had to grasp unprecedented notions of universality by availing themselves of tools previously acquired in their culture.

An overall comparative analysis of their work shows the transposition of real space into an infinite space that conveys their own sources of energy. The sculpture’s totemic nature elevates it to an interplanetary scale, visible even in those works that are reclined horizontally on the ground as if mysterious conceptual landscapes. Expressed in units of art, the work of the three coincides in that it manifests itself through varying geometric forms, subject to ad infinitum combinations, and in the fact that their meanings are interchangeable conceptually and formally, with cosmic and symbolic connotations.

AGUSTÍN C ÁRDENAS (Cuba, 1927-2001) develops his creative talent from painting and engraving during his formative stage in his native Cuba, when he studies at the celebrated San Alejandro Academy and works at the studio of Juan José Sicre, at the time a wellknown Cuban sculptor who has a great influence on the young Cárdenas. On the one hand, he introduces Cárdenas to the work of the French sculptor Antoine Bourdelle (1861-1929), whom Sicre admired for his offers that stayed clear of traditional sculpture and for the way he highlighted the power and force of the human figure; and on the other, he awakens in him an interest in the mixed-race roots of his native culture. We imagine that he adopts bioform from Bourdelle for his abstract-organic three-dimensional volumes. After this formative stage, he carries out his métier in the ambivalence of representational and abstract art, regardless of the material he was using.

In 1955, Cárdenas takes a decisive turn as an artist when he travels to Paris. It is here that his real vocation is born, one that will take him to the international arena: sculpting.

He arrives in Paris in the midst of an avant-garde effervescence. He has arrived at the center of artistic reflection, of visual inquiry and investigation, at a city teeming with artists from all over the planet—the stage that offers him theoretical and practical opportunities useful in what he wants to achieve as an artist. When he was at the peak of his craft, the sculptor Constantin Brancusi said of Cárdenas: “the force and the beauty lie in the simplicity of the work.”

Those who have studied Cárdenas’s work identify three stages in his development, defined not by topic or concept but by the material used. Carving dominates the first two periods, first wood and later hard stones such as marble, basalt and granite. The last stage will be bronze casting. But it is important to highlight that the material is related to the theme. Once in Paris, his interest turns to surrealist aesthetic; in 1957, he piques the attention of the theoretician and mentor of surrealism André Breton, participating in some of the exhibitions organized by the group. Nothing strange in view of his origins: a mysterious Cuba, the Cuba of the vegetable men. As of that moment, the forms-figures in the spaces he creates show his passion for a discipline that demands of him great material and human effort.

Cárdenas’s artistic and personal development approximates that of Wifredo Lam’s, a Cuban artist who lives in France and who was always connected to the surrealist current—one a sculptor, the other one a painter. Both were interested in the form-figure as it relates to certain ancestral components of Afro-Cuban culture. Both delved into the vegetable-human form implicit in their cultural background. Both were the heirs of ethnic mixed-races. Both adhered to topics linked to the exuberant character of the Caribbean tropic. His themes were symbolic forms of butterflies, birds, horses, couples; the titles of his work pertained to this idiosyncrasy.

Cárdenas was an avant-garde sculptor of the mid-20th century who did not adhere to the optical or kinetic geometric abstraction trends that he found upon his arrival in Paris.

His investigations into thematic and formal fields followed a parallel course, influenced perhaps not only by Bourdelle but also by Henry Moore with respect to the contortion of the form of the reclined figure. For example, in the sculptures Sensual (1940-1050) y Verticale (1959) he uses the elongated form characteristic of the aesthetic identity of his entire life’s production. The 1989 bronze sculptures Le Couple, Le Repos Passioné and Persistence Intime, being exhibited in D IÁLOGO

are good examples

of this continuity.

Cárdenas’s abstraction could be considered an essential abstraction, one in which the essence of an illuminated chiaroscuro organic form is most important. Thanks to the incidence of light on the various horizontal and vertical volumes and profiles, the luster of the material is highlighted to produce a certain atmosphere of drama that emerges from the smooth and sensual surface of the work.

For E DUARDO R AMÍREZ V ILLAMIZAR (Colombia 1922-2004), the trajectory through the Universidad Nacional de Bogotá’s School of Architecture was fundamental to him in creating a constructivist body of work that was passionate about his relationship with pre-Hispanic Latin American cultures. As with most, he starts his artistic career as a painter whose pictorial expression already hinted at his future as a sculptor propped up by the concept of considering “vacuum as material truth.” He debuts as a sculptor in 1960, displaying, and demonstrating, from the beginning the strictest precision of form and respect for the material—although at times he hides it underneath color, his work will be characterized by rusted welded iron.

He arrives in Paris in 1950. After a period as an expressionist painter, he becomes acquainted with Joaquín Torres García’s propositions of constructivist universalism. He also develops an interest in geometric abstraction and constructivism and in the optic-kinetic work of Victor Vasarely—for whom color, form and geometry are fundamental elements of artistic creation. He then undergoes a radical change: he becomes an abstract painter who predominantly uses lines, stripes and planes of intense color—blue, green, red— supported by neutral whites, blacks and grays. When he turns to sculpture, he seems to extract forms from these two-dimensional structures, taking them to a three-dimensional physical space. First, he creates white reliefs which he makes progressively more complex in their composition and in the use of strong colors as vital energy. After becoming interested in certain forms of geometric expression seen on prehistoric reliefs, he works with sheet plastic and studies painters of the New York school during his first prolonged stay in that city from 1967 to 1974. He maintains coherence in his work with rusted-welded iron, the same way he maintains it in his abstract-constructivist propositions. Of major

importance are his civic sculptures, monumental, that are found in public and private spaces in Bogotá and in the United States.

Components of architectural design have always permeated the three-dimensional propositions of this Colombian sculptor, even when his subject matter has come from the universe of nature: flowers, birds, insects, shells. Their titles make reference to these and offer the spectator a key to their interpretation, evidently related to the artist’s interest in pre-Hispanic art that began in the 1950s. A 1983 trip to Machu Picchu is the inspiration for the well-known series of sculptures Recuerdos de Machu Picchu: sculpted “constructions” with very sober line designs, characteristic of the megalithic engineering found in the pre-Hispanic citadel and the surrounding wall. Walls, terraces, roads, windows, doors, layouts, are recreated in sheet iron, in straight line grids that rest horizontally on supports and whose concept and form bring to mind those strongholds simultaneously closed and opened from which man transcended time and space at that time.

The work of Eduardo Ramírez Villamizar has thus transcended, registered in the geometric and constructivist innovations that have swayed the arts medium in Latin America since the 1950s. A statement by the artist is of relevance in understanding his approach to innovations in art: “I do not allow geometry to dominate my work. I believe expression and sensitivity have to dominate the materials. The first thing a work of art must have is poetry; without poetry, without mystery, it would be just geometry, and that, by itself, is not art.”

The third and youngest sculptor exhibiting his work is PABLO ATCHUGARRY (Uruguay, 1954). In DIÁLOGO TRIDIMENSIONAL, he presents various works that follow the unique aesthetic and technique that have characterized him: fine carvings in white Carrara marble that project vertically into infinity as if poetic lace. Distinct, magical, immaculate totems that invite a loving caress of the hand and the eye. Totems that propitiate ceremonies offered to mysterious gods. Such are the works in this exhibition.

The first person that exerted an influence on Atchugarry was his father, a student of Joaquín Torres García in Montevideo. In the 1970s, like all of them, he starts off as a painter, quickly becoming well-known thanks to the number of solo exhibitions he presents in major European cities since his formative years. In 1979, he discovers the magic of marble, a crucial point in his career. He had been experimenting with cement, wood, iron, exploring the properties of different materials in his quest to channel a still intense vocation when he decides to start working on La Pietà, a monumental work, and starts to sculpt a 12-ton Carrara marble block. The work takes him one year, 1982-1983, thereupon deciding to settle in Lecco, Italy; since then, he has divided his time and his work between Italy and Uruguay. In 1999, he founded Museo Pablo Atchugarry in Lecco.

In Punta del Este, Uruguay, he created the Pablo Atchugarry Foudation to promote young Latin American artists and to project their work at the Foundation Sculpture Park in Punta del Este. In 1987, Atchugarry held his first solo exhibition devoted only to sculpture. Since then, the artist, an indefatigable worker, has exhibited regularly.

Art critics and analysts have identified Atchugarry’s usually monumental sculptures with the obelisk, as an iconic representation of magic and spiritual rites and ceremonies. Monoliths of light that reach towards the infinite, symbols of sensibilities celebrating gods that illuminate man’s path. White marble, the finely-carved block of stone, stands like a virgin in front of the man-artist and offers itself to the pristine and delicate molding of upward incisions that we imagine as a delicate dance of the sculptor moving around it in his creative endeavor. In a permanent dialog with the material, Atchugarry gives form and meaning to the tension of passive violence in contemporary society.

The artist has seen the historic avant-garde of the first half of the 20th century. Choosing white marble as a first option—linked to the concept of “absolute” as used by abstract and constructivist painters, from Kazimir Malevich, to Ives Klein’s monochrome works, through Piet Mondrian’s wonderful canvases—has constituted an unprecedented creative possibility. In sculpture he is close, not to modernity as regards representational art, but rather to the infiniteness of works such as Constantin Brancusi’s and his endless column.

Atchugarry’s intricate forms offer artistic and formal solutions—not in relation to a physical reality but rather to contemporary man’s ontological reality.

The search for logic in sculpture, for the hidden essence within the stone, has brought Pablo Atchugarry to create a three-dimensional work that is closer to the human soul, closer poetically to his exalted passions. Elongated sculptures like flames blowing in the wind expressing feelings and defining his relationship with the universe. In these sculptures, form, content and purpose combine to create one single system of meanings.

Tres escultores, tres estéticas, tres propuestas tridimensionales diferentes, sin embargo afines en sus divergencias, se unen en D IÁLOGO T RIDIMENSIONAL , exposición que reúne la obra del cubano-francés Agustín Cárdenas, el colombiano Eduardo Ramírez Villamizar y el uruguayo Pablo Atchugarry. Una característica común que los une, cada uno ubicado en su tiempo y en su circunstancia cultural y humana, reside en la irreductibilidad alcanzada con un trabajo de arte de nivel universal e histórico-artístico. Desarrollándose en momentos y escenarios distintos, estos artistas han mantenido vigentes cánones vanguardistas de tendencias fundamentales en la historia del arte. Los tres son «abstractos» y han dado forma a fenómenos plásticos de la modernidad, aventurándose por regiones ligadas al quehacer espiritual y material del hombre. Cada uno ha aportado salidas al objetivismo de la abstracción concreta al manifestar la sensualidad de culturas ligadas a la tierra, al ser humano, a la cultura de un continente americano «simbólico» que se niega a reducir su existencia sólo a sus circunstancias fenomenológicas.

Ligados a la realidad sensible de una sociedad, la tríada conformada por Cárdenas, Ramírez Villamizar y Atchugarry, responde a la condición imaginaria del hombre en cuanto a una percepción sensible del espacio físico y espiritual. Aprehender, mirar y ver las esculturas dispuestas en un mismo lugar, la Galería Durban Segnini, ofrece la oportunidad de participar en un diálogo con la realidad conceptual tridimensional del arte. Realidad en la que estos creadores proporcionan fragmentos de intereses unitarios de lo material y lo emocional. En cada uno, un orden superior de lo visible está presente. Este orden se manifiesta en señales tangibles de las culturas que han permeado el desarrollo de un trabajo ligado a varios estratos de su desarrollo histórico. Podría hablarse entonces de una historia personal ligada a sectores multiculturales. Una historia donde lo ancestral, sobre todo aquello que corresponde a raíces indigenistas, se convierte en sustrato intangible de verticalidades que responde a un carácter totémico, y horizontalidades a un paisaje cósmico. Coincidencialmente los tres, en principio, en su etapa formativa, han transitado su propio terreno, o sea la cultura de sus países de origen. Pero también han asumido nuevas leyes y reglamentos artístico-existenciales en otras latitudes. Allí les ha correspondido aprehender nociones inéditas de universalidad valiéndose de herramientas adquiridas, con anterioridad, en su cultura propia.

En análisis general comparativo de la obra de los tres, es observable la transposición del espacio real a un espacio infinito que expresa sus propias fuentes de energía. El carácter totémico eleva la escultura hacia escalas interplanetarias, incluso visible en aquellas obras reclinadas que reposan horizontalmente sobre el suelo como si fueran misteriosos paisajes conceptuales. Expresadas en unidades plásticas, la obra de los tres coincide en manifestarse a través de formas geométricas variables, susceptibles de combinarse hasta el infinito, de ser permutables en sus significados conceptuales y formales, y de poseer connotaciones cósmicas y simbólicas.

AGUSTÍN C ÁRDENAS (Cuba, 1927-2001) desarrolla su talento creador a partir de la pintura y el grabado correspondientes a una etapa formativa en su natal Cuba, cuando estudia en la famosa Academia de San Alejandro y trabaja en el taller de Juan José Sicre, para la época reconocido escultor cubano que ejerce en el joven Cárdenas una influencia fundamental. Por un lado, lo introduce a la obra del escultor francés Antoine Bourdelle (1861-1929), a quien Sicre admiraba por sus propuestas alejadas de la escultura tradicional y destacar el poder y la fuerza del cuerpo humano; y por otro lado, en el interés por las raíces mestizas propias de su cultura natal. Presumimos que de Bourdelle asume la bioforma como volumen tridimensional abstracto-orgánico. Desde este período formativo, se maneja en la ambivalencia de la figuración y la abstracción, sea cual sea el material que utilice.

En 1955 hace un giro determinante en sus intereses plásticos cuando viaja a París. Aquí inicia la verdadera vocación que le traspolará a dimensiones internacionales: la escultura.

Llega a París en momentos de efervescencia vanguardista. Llega al centro de la reflexión artística, del cuestionamiento y la investigación visual, a la ciudad repleta de artistas venidos de muchos puntos del planeta. Éste es el escenario que le ofrece oportunidades, teóricas y prácticas, aprovechables en función de lo que deseaba para sí como artista.

En momentos de plenitud de su escultura, Constantin Brancusi dirá que en Cárdenas, «la fuerza y la belleza corresponden a la sencillez de la obra».

Analistas de la obra de Cárdenas consideran tres etapas en su desarrollo, definidas, no por tema ni concepto, sino por el material utilizado. La talla domina los dos primeros períodos. Primero en madera y luego en piedras duras como el mármol, el basalto y el granito. La última etapa será la fundición en bronce. Pero, es importante destacar que el material está relacionado con lo temático. Una vez en París se interesa por la estética surrealista. En 1957, llama la atención del teórico y mentor del surrealismo André Breton y participa en algunas de las exposiciones organizadas por el grupo. Nada de extrañar por su procedencia: la Cuba misteriosa, la de hombres vegetales. A partir de este momento, las formas-figuras en el espacio que crea, muestran la pasión por una disciplina que le demanda gran esfuerzo material y humano.

El desarrollo artístico y personal de Cárdenas podría afiliarse en correspondencia con Wifredo Lam, artista cubano que vive en Francia, siempre ligado a la corriente surrealista, uno escultor, el otro pintor. Ambos se interesaron por la forma-figura ligada a ciertos elementos ancestrales de la cultura afrocubana; ambos hurgaron en la forma vegetalhumana implícita en su sustrato cultural; ambos fueron herederos del mestizaje étnico; y ambos estuvieron apegados a temas ligados a la exuberante naturaleza del trópico caribeño. Sus temas fueron formas simbólicas de mariposas, pájaros, caballos, parejas, correspondiendo los títulos de su obra a esa idiosincrasia.

Cárdenas fue escultor de vanguardia de la mitad del siglo XX, quien no se afilió a las tendencias de la abstracción geométrica, óptica o cinética que encuentra a su llegada a París. Sus investigaciones en el campo temático y formal seguían un curso paralelo, tal vez influenciado, no sólo por Bourdelle, sino también por Henry Moore en la forma contorsionada, en la figura reclinada. Por ejemplo, en las esculturas Sensual (1940-1050) y Verticale (1959), exhibe la forma alargada característica de la identidad estética de toda su producción hasta el fin de sus días. Las esculturas Le Couple, Le Repos Passioné y Persistence Intime, bronces de 1989, expuestas en D IÁLOGO T RIDIMENSIONAL , son buenos ejemplos de esta continuidad.

La abstracción de Cárdenas podría considerarse como una abstracción esencialista. Lo más importante es la esencia de la forma orgánica en su constitución iluminada en claroscuros. Gracias a la incidencia de la luz sobre los diferentes volúmenes y perfiles horizontales y verticales, se destaca el brillo del material, produciéndose cierta atmósfera dramática que emana de la superficie lisa y sensual de la superficie de la obra.

En E DUARDO R AMÍREZ V ILLAMIZAR (Colombia 1922-2014), su paso por la Facultad de Arquitectura de la Universidad Nacional de Bogotá, fue fundamental en la creación de una obra de corte constructivista, pero apasionada en cuanto a sus relaciones con las culturas prehispánicas de América Latina. Como la mayoría, comienza su carrera artística como un pintor, cuyas expresiones pictóricas ya avizoran su futuro de escultor apuntalado por el concepto de considerar el «vacío como verdad material». Se inicia como escultor en 1960, mostrando, y demostrando, desde el principio fuerte rigor en la forma y en el respeto al material que, aun cuando en algunos momentos lo esconde bajo el color, el hierro oxidado y soldado, será característico de su obra.

En 1950 llega a París. Después de haber transitado en su pintura por una temática expresionista, inicia un cambio radical al conocer las propuestas del universalismo constructivo de Joaquín Torres García e interesarse en la abstracción geométrica, el constructivismo, y también en el trabajo óptico-cinético de Victor Vasarely, para quien color, forma y geometría son componentes fundamentales de la creación artística. Pasa a ser pintor abstracto con predominio de líneas, franjas y planos en colores intensos, azul, verde, rojo, apoyado en los neutros blanco, negro y grises. Al volcarse hacia la escultura, de esta estructura bidimensional pareciera extraer las formas que lleva al espacio físico, a hacerlas tridimensionales. Fueron primero los relieves blancos que progresivamente complejiza en su entramado compositivo y en la utilización de fuerte cromatismo como energía vital.

Luego de interesarse en ciertas expresiones geométricas de los relieves prehispánicos, en una primera larga estadía en Nueva York, 1967-1974, trabaja la lámina de plástico y observa a los pintores de la escuela de Nueva York. Así como mantiene coherencia en sus propuestas abstracto-constructivistas, también lo hace en cuanto al uso del hierro

oxidado-soldado. Importantes son las esculturas cívicas, monumentales, que se han instalado en espacios públicos y privados de Bogotá y ciudades de Estados Unidos.

Los elementos de diseño arquitectónico han permeado siempre las propuestas tridimensionales de este escultor colombiano, aun cuando los temas han sido tomados del universo de la naturaleza: flor, pájaro, insectos, caracol. Los títulos refieren a ello y dan claves interpretativas al espectador, evidentemente relacionados con su interés por el arte prehispánico que comienza en los años cincuenta. Un viaje a Machu Picchu en 1983 le inspira la reconocida serie escultórica Recuerdos de Machu Picchu, «construcciones» escultóricas de gran sobriedad en su diseño de líneas, característica de la ingeniería megalítica de la ciudadela prehispánica y las grandes murallas que se encuentran a su alrededor. Muros, terrazas, caminos, ventanas, puertas, trazados, son recreados en láminas de hierro, en entramados de líneas rectas que horizontalmente descansan sobre un soporte, rememorando en concepto y forma aquellas fortificaciones simultáneamente cerradas y abiertas a partir de las que el hombre de ese tiempo trascendió el tiempo y el espacio.

Así ha trascendido la obra de Eduardo Ramírez Villamizar, inscrita en las vanguardias geométricas y constructivistas que sacuden el medio de las artes plásticas de América Latina desde los años cincuenta. Una declaración del artista es importante en cuanto a la comprensión de sus actitudes en el universo de las vanguardias del arte: «No dejo que la geometría domine mi obra. Creo que la expresión y la sensibilidad tienen que dominar los materiales. Lo primero que debe tener una obra de arte es poesía; sin poesía, sin misterio, sería apenas geometría, y esta sola no es arte».

El tercer escultor y más joven de la exposición es PABLO ATCHUGARRY (Uruguay, 1954).

En D IÁLOGO T RIDIMENSIONAL presenta varias obras que siguen la particular estética y técnica que le han caracterizado: finas tallas en mármol blanco de Carrara que como poéticos encajes se proyectan verticalmente hacia el infinito. Tótems particulares, mágicos, inmaculados, que invitan a la caricia amorosa de la mano y el ojo. Tótems propiciatorios de ceremonias ofrecidas a misteriosos dioses. Así son las obras de esta muestra.

La primera influencia de Atchugarry proviene de su padre, quien en Montevideo fuera estudiante de Joaquín Torres García. En los años setenta, como todos, se inicia como pintor, adquiriendo rápida notoriedad por la cantidad de exposiciones individuales que realiza en importantes ciudades europeas desde estos años de formación. En 1979 descubre la magia del mármol, momento crucial en su carrera. Experimentaba con cemento, madera, hierro, exploraba las cualidades de diferentes materiales en su afán por lograr encauzar una vocación aún latente, cuando decide embarcarse en la realización de La Pietà, obra monumental; comienza la talla de un bloque de mármol de Carrara de 12 toneladas. El trabajo le lleva un año, 1982-1983. A raíz de esta experiencia decide ra-

dicarse en Lecco, Italia, y desde entonces divide su tiempo y su trabajo entre Italia y Uruguay. En 1999 funda el Museo Pablo Atchugarry en Lecco. En Punta del Este, Uruguay, crea la Fundación Pablo Atchugarry, dedicada a promover jóvenes artistas de América Latina y a proyectar su obra en el Parque de Escultura de la Fundación en Punta del Este. En 1987, realiza su primera exposición individual dedicada sólo a su escultura. De aquí hasta hoy, como trabajador incansable, estas exposiciones se han sucedido con altísima frecuencia Críticos y analistas de arte han relacionado la escultural de Atchugarry, generalmente monumental, con el obelisco como forma icónica de ritos y ceremonias de lo mágico y lo espiritual. «Monolitos de luz» que se elevan hacia el infinito, símbolos de sensibilidades celebratorias de Dioses que iluminan los caminos del hombre. El blanco mármol, la fina talla del bloque de piedra que virgen se instala frente al hombre-artista y se ofrece a las prístinas y delicadas incisiones modulatorias de movimientos ascendentes que, imaginamos, como delicada danza, el escultor se mueve a su alrededor accionando su hacer creador. En permanente diálogo con el material, Atchugarry le proporciona forma y sentido a las tensiones de la violencia pasiva de la sociedad contemporánea.

El artista ha mirado las vanguardias históricas de la primera mitad del siglo Xx. La selección del mármol blanco en una primera opción ligada al concepto de «absoluto», manejado por pintores abstractos y constructivistas, desde Kazimir Malevich pasando por las monocromías de Ives Klein hasta llegar a las maravillosas telas de Piet Mondrian, ha constituido una posibilidad de creación inédita. Su escultura se acerca, no a la modernidad en cuanto a la figuración, pero sí a la infinitud de una obra como la de Constantin Brancusi y su columna sin fin. La forma flamígera de Atchugarry ofrece soluciones plásticas y formales, no a una realidad física, pero sí a aquella realidad ontológica del hombre contemporáneo.

La lógica de la búsqueda escultórica, de la esencia escondida dentro de la piedra, ha llevado a Pablo Atchugarry a realizar una obra tridimensional más cerca del alma del ser humano, más poéticamente cerca de sus pasiones sublimizadas. Esculturas que se alargan como llamas entregadas al viento, que expresan sentimientos definitorios de sus relaciones con el universo. En estas esculturas forma, contenido y sentido se amalgaman en un solo sistema de significados.

AGUSTÍN C ÁRDENAS April 10, 1927, Matanzas, Cuba - February 9, 2001, Havana, Cuba Graduated in 1949 from San Alejandro Fine Arts Academy. Cárdenas studied at the Academia de Bellas Artes in Havana where he worked with the sculptor Sicre from 1943 to 1949, who had been a disciple of Bourdelle. He was a member of the “Grupo de los 11,” which was opposed to official academic teaching.

In 1954, Cárdenas won the national prize for sculpture. He continued his studies in Paris, around 1955, creating his works mainly at European countries, such as France and Italy.

André Breton knighted Cárdenas as a Surrealist upon his arrival in Paris in 1957.

Precursor of the Abstract Art in Sculpture, he has been acknowledged as one of the most outstanding contemporary sculptors leaning towards surrealism. His works on wood, brass and marble has been exhibited at the most important galleries of Europe, Asia, United States and Latin America. During his artistic formation, he received a strong influence of the tailor occupation learned in his childhood plus the practicing of weight lifting and some other sports, giving him the required physical strength for his profession.

In his work three main periods can be appreciated, the first one endowed with totem morphology, from 1951 to 1964, the second stage runs from 1965 to1982, where is present marble application and other hard solids such as granite, along this third and last stage since 1983 he added brass to his art works. He made monumental sculptures in Cuba, Israel, Canada, Seul and Canarias Islands. His pieces take part of numerous private collections, at universities, museums and squares as Pietrasanta, Toscana and Jean Gabriel Mitterand from Paris, Durban Gallery from Venezuela, National Museum of Fine Arts, Cuba and other centers and spaces in United States.

Cárdenas was to spend the remainder of his life in Paris. Cardenas was considered one of the last artists to join the Surrealist group.

The powers that nature has bestowed upon the human hand are not far, in our day, from having excluded each other. The increasing specialization of labor and the invasion of manufactured products have effectively given rise to a multitude of hands, each of which is fit for nothing more than a minimum of uses, and that have lost, outside of the specific groups thus constituted, the slightest mutual need—and this is an understatement—to link with one another. It is this hand today, multiple and elusive in every sense and on guard from all sides, that I like so much, seeing how, in the hand of Agustín Cárdenas, it is seemingly impossibly reconciled.

Does it serve to recall that the hand had purposes other than those of shaping what is required by utilitarian needs, being quite well-positioned to know that they have unleashed the monster of technological progress? Originally devoted to the task of harvesting unassisted, the hand was made–in every fiber of its flesh, in every one of its nerves—to enjoy, if necessary without the aid of the eye, anything that might, whether immediately or eventually, be the object of desire. Having identified it, whatever its substance—animal, vegetable, mineral—the hand was made to caress it at length, somewhat like enjoying a woman. This hand, alternately carving and pleasure-seeking, is also the one that, as one goes along, transforms itself into a sort of electric switch. It keeps in abeyance what man, increasingly hungry but alas increasingly deprived, will aspire to see, hear, as well as feel, to savor by virtue of his own hand (painting and sculpture, music, etc.). It is our good fortune to have Cárdena’s deft hand—as nimble as a dragonfly—on display at this highly privileged stage.

AGUSTÍN C ÁRDENAS Graduado en 1949 de San Alejandro Academia de Bellas Artes, Cárdenas estudió en la Academia de Bellas Artes de La Habana, donde trabajó con el escultor Sicre (1943-1949), que había sido discípulo de Bourdelle. Fue miembro del «Grupo de los 11», que se oponía a la enseñanza académica oficial.

En 1954, Cárdenas ganó el Premio Nacional de Escultura. Continuó sus estudios en París, alrededor de 1955 creando sus obras principalmente en los países europeos como Francia e Italia. André Breton nombró «caballero surrealista» a Cárdenas a su llegada a París en 1957.

Precursor del arte abstracto en la escultura, ha sido reconocido como uno de los escultores contemporáneos inclinados hacia el surrealismo más destacados. Sus trabajos sobre madera, bronce y mármol se han expuesto en las galerías más importantes de Europa, Asia, Estados Unidos y América Latina. Durante su formación artística, recibió una fuerte influencia de la ocupación de sastre que aprendió durante su infancia, más la práctica de levantamiento de pesas y otros deportes que le dieron la fuerza física necesaria para su profesión.

En su obra se pueden apreciar tres grandes períodos. El primero, dotado con morfología tótem, de1951 hasta1964; el segundo de 1965 a1982, donde está presente la aplicación del mármol y otros sólidos duros como el granito; la tercera y última etapa, desde 1983, cuando añadió bronce para sus obras de arte. Hizo esculturas monumentales en Cuba, Israel, Canadá, Seúl y las Islas Canarias. Sus piezas forman parte de numerosas colecciones privadas, universidades, museos y plazas como Pietrasanta, Toscana y Jean Gabriel Mitterrand de París, Durban Galería de Venezuela, Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, Cuba, y otros centros y espacios en Estados Unidos.

Cárdenas pasó el resto de su vida en París. Es considerado uno de los últimos artistas a unirse al grupo surrealista.

Los poderes que la naturaleza ha otorgado a la mano del hombre no están lejos, en nuestro día, de haberse excluido unos de los otros. La creciente especialización del trabajo y la invasión de productos manufacturados han suscitado una multitud de manos donde cada una no es apta más que para un mínimo de usos, y que han perdido, más allá de clanes específicos, la menor necesidad —y esto es poco decir— de relacionarse mutuamente. Es hoy esta mano, múltiple y huidiza en todo sentido y por todos lados en guardia, que tanto me agrada, al ver cómo, en la mano de Agustín Cárdenas, es imposible de reconciliar ¿Sirve de algo recordar que la mano tuvo otros fines aparte de los de confeccionar lo que dictan las necesidades utilitarias, que bien sabemos desencadenaron el monstruo del progreso tecnológico? Dedicada originalmente a la labor de la cosecha sin intermediarios, la mano se hizo —en cada una de sus fibras, en cada uno de sus nervios— para disfrutar, de ser necesario sin la ayuda de la vista, lo que pueda ser de inmediato o con efecto retardado, el objeto de un deseo. Al identificarlo, cualquiera que sea su substancia —animal, vegetal o mineral— la mano se hizo para acariciarlo largamente, un poco como se disfruta a una mujer. Esta mano, que a veces talla y a veces busca el placer, es también la que se transforma por el camino en una especie de interruptor eléctrico. Mantiene suspendido lo que el hombre, cada vez más hambriento pero desgraciadamente cada vez más carente, aspirará a ver, escuchar y también sentir, para saborear en virtud de su propia mano —la pintura y la escultura, la música, etc.—. Tenemos la suerte de tener la hábil mano de Cárdenas —tan ágil como una libélula— en este tan privilegiado escenario.

He aquí como brota de sus dedos el gran tótem floral que, más que un saxofón, hace arquear el talle de las bellas.

EDUARDO RAMÍREZ VILLAMIZAR (Pamplona, Colombia, 1923 - Bogotá, 2004) He studied architecture at Bogota’s National University. In Paris when discovered new geometric abstractionism trends. After undergoing a transition where geometry and the figurative style merged, he carried out in 1955 the first non-objective mural that was made in Colombia. In 1959, he received first prize in painting at the XII National Artists Fair with the piece Horizontal en blanco y negro, and that same year he made the mural Relieve dorado at the head office of Banco de Bogotá, a piece of large dimensions which clearly allude to pre-Columbian designs. He again won first prize in 1964 and 1066, on the occasion the XVI Fair (Saludo al astronauta) and the XVII Fair (El río). As sculptor, he used wood, plexiglass and iron (painted until 1984, oxidized henceforth).

Throughout there is an unavoidable thesis geometric relation: symmetry (or negative asymmetry).

No wonder that the geometry plays a crucial role in the artistic propositions Ramirez as unsettled and essentialist, from its famous reliefs (started in the late 50s) until the recent Masks Rituals also through periods greet astronaut, Torres, as spaceship construction, Los Caracoles, Cathedrals, wall opening, Homage to Bach and wonderful series triggered by the sacred name of Machu Picchu.

There is a cycle of Ramírez Villamizar creations are marked by large geometric constructions and pre-Columbian art.

Let the artist assumes his reminder verb: “Ceremonial centers Tikai and Machu Picchu revealed to me deep experience and satisfaction. High in the Andes Mountains, I was assaulted by a chilling aesthetic emotion during the two days and nights that I was allowed to live in the Inca city. Surrounded by solemnity and silence, felt the unity and harmony of those great stones, molded with the changes of the Peruvian light. Sheltered dawn or night, in the rain, the fog, each emitting a sacred stone and own energy. I felt that my work was benefited from the large influx of that ancient and impassive look.

Machu Picchu opened my other sense doors, pointing to a different route and joyful.”

Estudió arquitectura en la Universidad Nacional de Bogotá. En 1954 llega a París y descubre las nuevas tendencias abstraccionistas geométricas. Después de someterse a una transición en la que la geometría y la figuración se fusionaron, en 1955 llevó a cabo el primer mural no objetivo que se hizo en Colombia. En 1959 recibió el Primer Premio de Pintura en la XII Feria Nacional de Artistas con la pieza Horizontal en blanco y negro, y ese mismo año hizo el mural Aliviar dorado en la sede central del Banco de Bogotá, una pieza de grandes dimensiones que claramente alude a diseños precolombinos. Él volvió a ganar el Primer Premio en 1964 y 1966, con motivo de la Feria XVI (Saludo al astronauta) y la Feria XVII (El río). Como escultor, utilizó madera, plexiglás y hierro —pintado hasta 1984, oxidada en adelante—.

En toda tésis geométrica hay una relación insoslayable: la simetría —o en negativo, la asimetría—.

No es de extrañar que la geometría juegue un papel decisivo en las proposiciones artísticas de Ramírez, tan decantadas y esencialistas, desde sus célebres Relieves —iniciados a finales de los años 50— hasta las recientes Máscaras Rituales, atravesando también los períodos de Saludo al Astronauta, Torres, Construcción como Nave Espacial, Los Caracoles, Las Catedrales, Muro Abriéndose, Homenaje a Bach y la maravillosa serie desencadenada por el sagrado nombre de Machu Picchu. Todo un ciclo de creaciones de Ramírez Villamizar que están signadas por las grandes construcciones y el arte geométrico precolombinos.

Dejemos que el propio artista asuma su verbo recordatorio: «Los centros ceremoniales de Tikai y Machu Picchu me revelaron hondas experiencias y satisfacciones. En lo alto de las montañas andinas, fui asaltado por una estremecedora emoción estética durante los dos días con sus noches en que me fue permitido vivir en la ciudad inca. Rodeado de solemnidad y silencio, percibí la unidad y armonía de esas piedras grandiosas, moldeadas con los cambios de la luz peruana. Al abrigo del amanecer o de la noche, bajo la lluvia, entre la niebla, cada piedra emitía una energía sagrada y propia. Sentí que mi obra se beneficiaba del gran influjo de esa estética milenaria e impasible. Machu Picchu me abrió otras puertas sensoriales, señalando una ruta diferente y gozosa».

PABLO ATCHUGARRY Pablo Atchugarry was born the 23rd of August, 1954 in Montevideo, Uruguay.

He was inspired in his artistic endeavors by his father Pedro, an art lover and a frequent presence at the workshop of Uruguayan master Joaquín Torres García. From a very young age he perceived the great interest and aptitude Pablo had manifested in art, so he stimulated him to enter the field of painting.

In his childhood it did not pass much time for his artistic career to take off, since already at 11 years old he began having his first shows. This way, since his early adolescence, and without leaving painting aside, Pablo felt the need to explore new creative fields in which to consolidate a complete expression for his art. Thus, he began experimenting with new forms and materials: he starts with sculpture, he creates in cement, metal and wood.

His first personal show took place in 1972 in Montevideo´s Sala Cívica, two years later he had his first international show in Buenos Aires. At the end of the 1970s he makes several study trips to France, Spain, and finally, Italy, where he will have a personal show in Lecco.

It is in 1979 that he discovers his fascination with an extraordinary material such as Carrara marble, making there his first sculpture, La Lumierè. While he advances in his career he returns frequently to Uruguay until in 1982 he decides to establish himself in Lecco, as a consequence of his first commission of a great work, La Pietà, today property of the Basílica de San Nicolò, patron of Lecco.

Since 1989 the energy of his sculptures drove him to manifest himself in a prolific manner through monumental works, which are today part of several European and Latin American public spaces. Other works are part of public and private collections.

In 1996, in Parque del Palacio de Gobierno del Uruguay (a government sponsored park), Seed of Hope is inaugurated, a work made in Carrara marble of 3,90 meters high. Thus comes Spring of 2001 when the Province of Milan organizes, at Isimbardi Palace, a retrospective of the last ten years of his artistic creations. At the beginning of the XXI century he makes the Obelisk of the Third Millenium, a huge 6 meters tall sculpture in Carrara marble, that embellishes the city of Manzano in Udine. Beginning 2002, the 3 meters

tall Garfagnana marble sculpture Ideali, is placed over the Princess Grace Avenue in Monaco, as an homage for the 50 years of its reign.

In May 2002, at the roundabout of Caleotto in Lecco, the Monumento alla Civiltà e Cultura del Lavoro Lecchese is unveiled, sculpted in a 33-ton block of Carrara marble, Bernini variety, with a height of 6.10 meters.

An important milestone for Pablo Atchugarry came in July of 2002 when he received in Carrara the Michelángelo Award in recognition for his artistic career. The Collection of the Museum of Lercaro in Bologna, acquires in May of 2003 a work of the master, in Portugal pink marble, called Sensazione d’Infinito.

In 2003 Pablo Atchugarry represented Uruguay in the 50th Venice Biennale with his work Dreaming of Peace, a group sculpture formed by five elements in Carrara marble, between 3.50 and 2.50 meters tall, and other three in Bardiglio de la Garfagnana marble of 1.50 meters tall.

The year 2009 represented another important landmark in the international collaboration field promoted by Pablo Atchugarry with the initiative sustained by the Foundation and Heidi Weber Museum Center Le Corbusier in Zurich. In January 2010, un unseen show in South America opened with more than 120 works of the artist Le Corbusier that included: oils, sculptures, tapestries, lithographs, engravings, furnishings, mock-ups and drawings of the Heidi Weber Collection.

At the present time he lives and works in the city of Lecco in Italy, with frequent presence in all of Europe and Latin America. The city of Lecco is also home to the Pablo Atchugarry Museum where it remains as the space created to host previous and recent work, in order to present the artistic evolution of the author.

Pablo Atchugarry´s actual trajectory represents an artistic itinerary marked by a strong international interaction where the collaboration with important institutions is established by the will to unite territories, arts and inspiration in a unique flow of inspiration that can be associated with purity and the energy of his sculptures.

PABLO ATCHUGARRY Pablo Atchugarry nació el 23 de agosto de 1954 en Montevideo, Uruguay.

Fue inspirado en la labor de artista por su padre Pedro, un amante del arte y asiduo al taller del maestro uruguayo Joaquín Torres García. Desde una edad muy joven percibió el gran interés y la aptitud que Pablo había manifestado en el arte, por lo que le estimula a entrar en el campo de la pintura.

En su infancia no pasó mucho tiempo para que su carrera artística despegase, puesto que ya a los 11 años comenzó a tener sus primeras muestras. De esta manera, desde su temprana adolescencia, y sin dejar de lado la pintura, Pablo sintió la necesidad de explorar nuevos campos de la creatividad donde consolida una expresión completa para su arte. Por lo tanto, comenzó a experimentar con nuevas formas y materiales: comienza con la escultura, crea en cemento, metal y madera.

Su primera exposición individual tuvo lugar en 1972 en Sala Cívica, Montevideo, y dos años más tarde tuvo su primera exposición internacional en Buenos Aires. A finales de la década de 1970 hace varios viajes de estudio a Francia, España y, finalmente, Italia, donde tendrá una exposición personal en Lecco.

Es en 1979 cuando descubre su fascinación por un material extraordinario como el mármol de Carrara, haciendo allí su primera escultura, La Lumierè. Mientras avanza en su carrera él vuelve con frecuencia a Uruguay hasta que en 1982 decide establecerse en Lecco, como consecuencia de su primer encargo de una gran obra, La Pietà, hoy propiedad de la Basílica de San Nicolò, patrón de Lecco.

Desde el año 1989 la energía de sus esculturas lo llevó a manifestarse de manera prolífica a través de obras monumentales, que son hoy parte de varios espacios públicos de Europa y Latinoamérica. Otras obras son parte de colecciones públicas y privadas.

En 1996, en el Parque del Palacio de Gobierno del Uruguay —un parque patrocinado por el gobierno—, se inaugura Semillas de esperanza, una obra realizada en mármol de Carrara de 3,90 metros de altura. Así viene la primavera de 2001, cuando la Provincia de Milán organiza, en Isimbardi Palace, una retrospectiva de los últimos diez años de sus creaciones artísticas. A principios del siglo XXI se hace el Obelisco del Tercer Milenio, una enorme escultura de 6 metros de altura en mármol de Carrara, que embellece la ciudad de Manzano en Udine. A partir de 2002, la escultura Ideali, de 3 metros de alto elaborada mármol Garfagnana, es instalada sobre la Avenida Princesa Grace en Mónaco, como un homenaje por los 50 años de su reinado.

En mayo de 2002, en la rotonda de Caleotto en Lecco, el Monumento alla Civiltà e Cultura del Lavoro Lecchese se dio a conocer, esculpido en un bloque de 33 toneladas de mármol de Carrara, de la variedad de Bernini, con una altura de 6,10 metros.

Un hito importante para Pablo Atchugarry se produjo en julio de 2002, cuando recibió en Carrara el Premio Miguel Ángel, en reconocimiento a su trayectoria artística. En mayo de 2003 la colección del Museo Lercaro en Bologna adquiere una obra del maestro elaborada en mármol rosa de Portugal llamada Sensazione d’ ïnfinito.

En 2003 Pablo Atchugarry representó a Uruguay en la 50 Bienal de Venecia con su obra El sueño de la paz, un grupo escultórico formado por cinco elementos en mármol de Carrara, entre 3,50 y 2,50 metros de altura, y otros tres en mármol bardiglio de la Garfagnana de 1,50 metros de altura.

El año 2009 representó otro hito importante en el campo de la colaboración internacional promovida por Pablo Atchugarry con la iniciativa sostenida por la Fundación Pablo Atchugarry y el Heidi Weber Museum Center Le Corbusier en Zurich. En enero de 2010, un espectáculo nunca visto en Suramérica abrió sus puertas en la Fundación Atchugarry con más de 120 obras de Le Corbusier que incluyó: óleos, esculturas, tapices, litografías, grabados, mobiliario, maquetas y dibujos de la Colección Heidi Weber.

En la actualidad vive y trabaja en la ciudad de Lecco, en Italia, con presencia frecuente en toda Europa y América Latina. La ciudad de Lecco es también el hogar del Museo Pablo Atchugarry, donde permanece como el espacio creado para albergar trabajos anteriores y recientes, con el fin de presentar la evolución artística del autor.

La trayectoria real de Pablo Atchugarry, representa un itinerario artístico marcado por una fuerte interacción internacional en la que la colaboración con importantes instituciones se establece por la voluntad de unir los territorios, las artes y la inspiración en un flujo único que puede estar asociado con la pureza y la energía de sus esculturas.
