01. Piazza within a Piazza The project consists of two major programmatic elements, a library, and a kindergarten, designed in Piazza Dei Ciompi, a historical site in the heart of the city of Florence in Italy. This project is an action to reflect the necessities of citizens and visitors in a touristic town. The idea of “Piazzas” was critical in this project. With the site being an existing Piazza, the decision to keep the site open as much as possible was crucial. Forms of existing Piazzas in Florence inspired the shape of the project and the three Piazzas created in the project.

The north Piazza is dedicated to the existing business and expanded seating area from the “Logia.” The one in the center becomes the center of the building, becoming a continuation of the street and the main gathering space. The south Piazza becomes the playground for the Kindergarten and daycare, but a space offered to kids in the community.

A grid system was implemented in floor plan and elevation, inspired by the symmetrical facades of Florence’s buildings and the city’s urban layout. The lack of particular necessities within Florence, such as sitting areas for the public, quiet study areas, sports recreation spaces, and community centers, was an incentive to help bring these needs within the library and the Kindergarten.

Concrete is the project’s primary material, and a red pigment concrete is used only in the continuation of the street, reflecting Florence’s early Renaissance heritage of the famous “cupola del Brunelleschi.” The eastsouth isometric illustrates the new Piazza with the new Kindergarten and the Library.

It reveals how the outdoors and surrounding environment will play an essential role in “Piazza Dei Ciompi.”

02. House, Houses, Housing This proposal is a 10-unit housing project where the targeted users are single couples and small families. This project is about gable roofs as separated towers connected by the roof shape, windows, openings, and materials. This project intends to present two main public spaces; an open floor plan retail where the street vendor can work and an amphitheater. These spaces will allow the public to occupy the building by offering a space for retail and engaging with the architecture by seating at the amphitheater.

The project is on the corner of Silver Lake Blvd, and Effie St. The house’s gable shape familiarizes it with the neighborhood, with the main idea of breaking the scale and creating the famous house shape. The project is programmatically divided into three towers to split units. Also works for crossventilation and offers an intimate village feel. These alleyways should be extended and open; however, they should not open to the street because part of what makes them unique is their personal and hidden quality.

Developing the facade is based on materials used in LA housing and local structures within the site. The building is clad with black corrugated panels and a white interior, contrasting materials. The openings on the units are consistent in terms of windows, which for the most part, define space but, for others, serve only as continuity of the pattern, creating different experiences around the building. This project conveys the modern way of living, where the exterior is perceived through spatial qualities, and the interior is about space and life.

The project received the Honor Prize for the Jack and Marilyn Zuber Remembrance Award and was also chosen for exhibition during the Fall 2022 Interim 13

03. Mountain Life The project explores the relationship and distinction between program and structure.

This concept is explored throughout this open system, with volumes set at different levels by detaching the volumes from the main structure. Programmatically the project merges this idea of living and working simultaneously, the calm and comfort of housing but also a working space for scientists. In addition, the consideration of visitors (hikers) was crucial by providing a central social area, serving as an educational center for academic groups to come and visit the observatory.

The building acts as a bridge with a cantilevered edge pending the volumes.

The main interior frames are dedicated to the living spaces. At the same time, the extension of beams to both sides allows the design to occupy the west side for circulation and the east side for outdoor balconies.

The goal was to keep the structure reasonably minimum for the volumes.

For someone that enjoys hiking, this project embraces the idea of being exposed to the landscape as much as possible; thus, the project is designed with private and public balconies for significant exposure to the exterior. The program required an ADA ramp and stairs; an elevator was not allowed.

Consequently, the ADA ramp uses a different geometric language from the project.

The building is perceived as having two facades; transparency and clarity were the concepts in selecting materials. For the interior, the volumes are clad with green zinc metal panels, mainly to emphasize the landscape’s surroundings. For the exterior, the main facade is sliding steel grading panels that, in a specific location, are fixed, and in some parts, it is adaptable for shading.

The project earned the opportunity to be showcased during the Spring 2022 Interim exhibition.

04. As Below, So above This project critically analyzes the contemporary library and attempts to address the various ways information transfer occurs through different information modalities.The proposal for the Citrus Community College Library intends to bridge the gaps between types of information and the method by which information is accessed. In doing so, this proposal places interactions between students, staff, and faculty at the heart of the library. The programmatic approach in this proposal indexes spaces by the type of information they store. This can be seen in consolidating analog media on the subterranean level and collaboration spaces on the second and third floors. These dramatically different programs are connected through the fluidity of the ground floor, which invites students from the primary campus axis to interact with the soft-scaped undulating forms.

These different programs are expressed through various form-finding strategies that cater to their spatial contents. At the subterranean level, earthwork strategies using heavy forms that reflect the sheer weight of human knowledge are deployed.

Light is brought to this level through punch openings and light wells that spur interaction from the ground floor. In the elevated spaces, light forms and materials are deployed to express the intangible value of student collaboration and digital forms of information.The facade mediates between the harshness of the Southern California sun and the necessity of natural light in collaborative educational environments.

Folded ripples and the tactful placement of slot openings allow the facade to delaminate from the floor plate, effectively mitigating solar heat gain and allowing natural light to permeate these spaces.

The project, in collaboration with Ethan Van Beek, has been chosen for display at the Spring 2024 Interim exhibition.
