Welcome! As the Organizing Committee of this EMSA GA, we sincerely hope that you’re going to love Lisbon during the GA as much as we love it! This year the OC is made of a group of 11 medical students whose mission is to help you having the best time while you’re staying in this beautiful city, making sure you’ll always get to the places of the meeting sessions, helping you with any questions you might have and, of course, planning an awesome Social Programme, because we don’t want to see you burnout with all work and no fun. As you might know, we’ve been preparing these 5 days for a long time. Year by year, one of the goals of the GA-OC is to foster and promote student mobility in order to debate important questions together, regarding important topics such as our education and the public health. As you’re reading this booklet, we’ll be right behind you setting all the plenary and pillar sessions, getting everyone ready for the Trainings and planning the traditional Twinning Market. There will always be some of us helping in the coffee-breaks and organizing the amazing nights you’re going to experience. And to guarantee you won’t miss a thing, we’ll be in the VIP Inn Berna Hotel in the morning so you don’t fall asleep in such important days! Dear EMSAi, Another great EMSA assembly is ahead of us. It is my pleasure on behalf of the EMSA European Board to welcome you to the 23rd EMSA General Assembly. At this event we will all have opportunity to learn from the world famous doctors, best youth trainers and enjoy in the most diverse social program. During the plenary sessions we will make review of the work of this year’s board, we will discuss changes, papers and elect the international board of EMSA 2013/14. The GA is the right place were all the new and old members can learn how our association function. For this GA the EMSA European Board and the GA Organization Committee will brought to you several interesting speakers who will present you the latest updates in the field of Medicine. As guest speakers we have confirmed presence from António Vaz Carneiro, PhD, FACP Head of CEMBE - Centre for Evidence Based Medicine; Stephan Dressler, MD, Dr. phil. European AIDS Treatment Group which will present to us “What it the European AIDS Treatment Group and how can young medical students take part on the activities”; Tamara Torroni International AIDS Society Secretariat, Ms. Torroni will give us overview of IAS’s activities in which medical students can take part and also all the scholarship opportunities; and Bruno Silva-Santos, PhD Assistant Professor of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon Group leader at IMM.

Beside this booklet in which you can read short descriptions of the pillar sessions and the GA trainings which will take place during our stay in Lisbon, the EEB is preparing the official GA Booklet which will contain all the AR and necessary documents for the plenary sessions. The Faculty of Medicine is a part of the University of Lisbon. It origins back to the Royal School of Surgery created in 1825 at São José’s Hospital, later renamed the Lisbon Medical-Surgical School and, in 1911, Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon. It was initially located in a new building in Campo de Sant’Ana and, in 1956, the Faculty was transferred to Santa Maria’s Hospital. Its premises have recently been extended since 2004 with the Egas Moniz building, where the Institutes of Basic Sciences and the Institute of Molecular Medicine are located, and the Faculty has established cooperative protocols with several hospitals and health centres for undergraduate teaching. The Mission of the Medical School has been clearly stated: “To provide doctors with solid scientific education, promotion of self-learning and capacity for lifelong learning, with communication skills with patients, peers and with society as a whole, qualified for working in professional multidisciplinary teams, aware of contemporary challenges in health and ethics in medicine and life sciences, fit for useful and creative integration in the health’s system in today’s society and capable of making an informed choice for their professional careers.” The Faculty of Medicine, in cooperation with the Institute of Molecular Medicine and the Santa Maria’s Hospital, established the Lisbon Academical Medical Centre, an innovating concept joining together teaching, research and medical practice. Its aim is to increase scientific activity and develop translational research between the Biomedical Sciences and Clinical Medicine, technological differentiation, and the development of Postgraduate training programs, Masters and PhDs for doctors and other health professionals.
The Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon has its scientific roots on the pioneers of scientific Medicine in Portugal, continues the tradition of Egas Moniz and other innovators that developed the Portuguese School of Angiography and introduced new surgical techniques for the treatment of vascular disorders, which represented the Golden Era of Portuguese Medicine and a source of inspiration for today. By honouring the Past, the Faculty aims to contribute for the progress of Medical Sciences, to foster innovation and to develop a more humane, patient-centred and scientific-based Medicine. 9 The International Foods and Drinks Party is a great opportunity for all the participants of the GA to get together and also possibly make new friends, while getting to know different cultures. For this, you should bring typical foods and drinks from your own countries so that the variety of food is great and you will probably taste a delicious a new dish you have never seen or heard about before. If you want, you can also bring some typical songs or costumes/outfits from you own countries, so that everyone has the chance to get to know them. Let’s make this event the most International experience you’ll ever have in your life!
PUBLIC HEALTH Session I: Global health and the EMSA PH pillar This session will introduce you to the main concepts in the emerging field of Global health (as is introduced by the Copenhagen School of Global Health at the University of Copenhagen). You will have an opportunity to engage in lively discussions on topics such as the social determinants of health, sexual and reproductive health, non-communicable diseases and developmental aid, while getting our minds around the main players in the field and the challenges facing us in the future. Then we will turn our attention to the new and existing projects in the EMSA PH pillar that can be inspired by the insight we gain during the discussion.

Responsible for nearly 200,000 deaths annually, the third biggest cause of early death and illness and the cause for in 1 out of 4 deaths among young men, alcohol is one of the biggest killers after tobacco and high blood pressure. But Europe is still the leading world region in alcohol consumption, alcohol is still very legal and binge drinking is still the favourite way of spending a weekend for millions of students and young people. This workshop will give you all the tools you will need to fight for sober communities all over Europe. We will take you through what takes to plan an effective health advocacy campaign, using a method that you can use and reuse again and again on any topic that interests you, inside or out of medicine.
Session III: Against discrimination – care for HIV+ persons Dr. Stephan Dressler, European AIDS Treatment Group (www.eatg.org) Within the 30 years since AIDS has first been described, there were major developments in understanding this new syndrome: in 1984, the HIV virus was identified as the causative agent of AIDS. Epidemiology and transmission routes were monitored; public health systems all over the world developed strategies of coping with this new transmissible disease. In the mid-1990s, highly active combination therapies became available, and today antiretroviral therapy is one of the cornerstones of fighting the HIV epidemic. However, even in the age of antiretroviral therapy, providing care for persons living with HIV remains a particular challenge as stigma and discrimination against persons with HIV are still a commonly observed fact. This interactive workshop will address issues of stigma and discrimination in the setting of (medical) care and focus on the role that doctors and medical staff can play in avoiding and overcoming discriminatory attitudes. Biography Dr. phil. Dr. med. Stephan Dressler studied medicine and philosophy at Freie Universitaet Berlin. He has worked for the National AIDS Centre at the Federal Health Office, Germany. In 1992 he became a founding member of the European AIDS Treatment Group (EATG). His current work focuses on patient education seminars (HIV, hepatitis, tuberculosis) in Central and Eastern Europe. He also serves as abstract reviewer for International AIDS Society (IAS) and World AIDS conferences, and is a member of
the European Community Advisory Board (ECAB). His publications include various dictionaries and encyclopedias, articles on research ethics and philosophy with children.
MEDICAL EDUCATION PILLAR Session I: Getting familiar with ME pillar with Madalena Patrício (AMEE) If you are still wondering for what is the pillar responsible, this session is just for you. We will let you know about the active Medical Education Projects, Summer Schools, Educational system throughout Europe, student’s mobility and Bologna Process. You will find out how you and your FMO can contribute to EMSA work on this field, how you can take part in the AMEE conference and many other events. Furthermore, you will have an insight on the Bologna Process, given by Madalena Patrício, from AMEE.
Session II: Sharing experiences We continue with the best projects from last year. In this session we invite the most experienced people in making Medical Education Projects to present their work, ideas and share good practices. We will discuss together the new perspectives, set up priorities and try to enrich future EMSA activities. Attend this session, take the best from the best and bring it home!
Session III: Making innovative ideas happen This is the time and place where the new projects will be launched. If you have some local project that has never been presented on a GA or NCM, please don’t keep it for yourself, we are curious to know more about it. You can bring all your enthusiasm, energy and passion, if possible some leaflets, posters and promotional materials too :) A short presentation or just some pictures would fit perfectly. Don’t miss any of the pillar sessions, we promise a diversity of topics, discussions, games, brainstorming and a priceless experience.

Session I (September 5th; 18.00 – 20.00): Science means… PRACTISE? On the first Medical Science Pillar session day you will try yourself in practice. The main coordinator of the workshop Erika Birgiolaitė has participated in the Summer Surgery Camp, organized by Romanian Students Society of Surgery. She is the sole finder of such surgical skills workshops in Lithuanian University of Health Sciences and is more than glad to share her expertise with you! Prepare your hands well! We will make sure your first surgical knots won’t be too loose! Session II (September 6th; 9.00-11.00): Science means… RESEARCH? with Nick Shockey, Right to Research Coalition Today will be all about the research. First of all, you will be introduced to a brand new idea from Lithuanian medical student Džiugas Meškelevičius who believes in creating an EMSA exchange network between laboratories all around the Europe! After the presentation you will attend a workshop given by Nick Shockey, the Director of the Right to Research Coalition. Have you ever heard about this international alliance? It connects 31 graduate and undergraduate student organizations, representing nearly 7 million students! Stay tuned and read the description below!
Open Access 101: The Future of Scientific & Medical Publishing and Why It Matters to Medicine How many times have you come across a medical article you couldn’t get access to when researching a patient’s condition? If you’re like most, it’s probably something that happens all too often. Expensive price barriers to reading the latest medical research harms patient care, impedes an evidence-based medical
education, and slows the discovery of new treatments and diagnostics. Fortunately, there is a solution. Open Access is the idea that all research articles should be openly available online for all to read free of charge. Open Access has the ability to revolutionize medical research, provide doctors with all of the latest information when they need it, and empower patients to take an active role in their care. Leading biomedical research funders like the Welcome Trust and US National Institutes of Health already require results of research they fund to be made freely available online, but much remains to be done at the institutional, national, and international levels to ensure everyone has full access to the medical literature. This workshop will describe the basics of what Open Access is, how it can be achieved, and the significant impact it can have in improving medical care.

Want to start doing research while being a medical student and don’t know where to start from? Then join the session, where a researcher PhD Bruno Silva - Santos will enlighten you on this issue and provide useful advice! The last part of our 3-days-long sessions – EMSA Medical Science upcoming projects, events and YOUR THOUGHTS! Please bring all your ideas and suggestions – everyone is welcome!
MEDICAL ETHICS AND CULTURE Session 1: Upcoming Event: European Week of Ethics The long-waited moment has come: A very enthusiastic FMO took the lead and they are making this project come true. In this session, we will discuss about overall event and organization, as there are lots of things to be decided upon, such as: What type of sessions should there be, topic suggestions for discussions, duration of sessions, outcomes and of course social program :) Anyone interested in this amazing event should come and join to this session. PS: For those who doesn’t know EWE project; EWE is international event, aiming to raise awareness of ethical problems, potential solutions and opinions of the specialists in that specific field.
Session 2: New aspect in the pillar: Human Rights This session will be a sequel to the Human Rights session held in NCM 2013 in Georgia. But don’t worry, if you couldn’t attend that session: We will cover that with having a little talk about human rights, why does it concern us as future doctors, and what has been done this year in human rights projects. Human Rights aspect is new to E&C pillar, and the projects need attention. In this session, we will brainstorm about the projects (namely Human Rights Webinars, Over the Rainbow and International Women’s Day Activities), hopefully come up with creative ideas to improve them, or perhaps creating a new project related to Human Rights.

Session 3: The E&C Pillar - Past, Present & Future In this session we will talk about what has been done in E&C pillar in the previous years, how projects evolved and how the pillar grew. After a brief update about what has been done this year, we will discuss about what was planned but couldn’t achieved too. Then it will be the time for talking about the “future” of the pillar: What do you want to see in E&C? Do you want to invent a project, or improve/evolve an existing project? This session will be the perfect session for both those who want to learn about the pillar and make a contribution to the pillar.

Fundraising Like a Boss Diogo Medina In the day and age of the overbearing tyranny of the ominous 'C' word, fundraising comes across as a daunting and most strenuous of tasks within a project. Resources are thinning by the day, and, conversely, the need and purposefulness of the activities you organize have never been greater. This is exactly why you need to gather your thoughts and be sure your managerial and fundraising skills are on point. This will be a very dynamic and practical training session, based on some theory, and on a whole lot of practice. "Crisis? What crisis?". At the end you will leave feeling invigorated, ready to take on the world with a cunning smile and bring your projects to life— you have a strategy! Hakuna Matata: Emotional Intelligence Damla Yağmur What a wonderful phrase! Human beings are blessed and cursed by free will and emotions. Yes, understanding the world around us is through our five senses, but how about our emotions, choices, and actions? What is their level of involvement in defining us, in affecting our understanding? What helps us understand emotion, in ourselves and in others? In this training we will experience and discuss matters regarding emotional intelligence. Our eyes, nose, skin, taste buds, and ears will be involved in the process, and we welcome everyone who is eager for a chance of becoming a mirror of themselves and their group! Learn together, handle as one! Project Management Skills Göknur Topçu Can you see what is happening around you? Are you aware of how important is it to be able to manage even the small things that are evolving in your life? Do you know that project management is more than what the title claims? If you want to be able to lead to any kind of a project which can vary from a twinning project to a transport of a transplant, join our training to upgrade your skills. Learn how to be able to handle a group and engage your theories into practice. We are waiting for you to spread your knowledge while you learn from your colleagues around an entire continent! How to charge our batteries: Motivation Sezgi Güllü Yıldırım Durability of the batteries change; it is about how long you used the power, for which reason you used for and the quality of them. It is not important if your batteries die often. The question is how to change the batteries into rechargeable ones. This training will be your laboratory! Be ready to set the lab experiment and be ready to have the biggest experiment of your life. The aim of this lab work is to make your batteries rechargeable, and please please please be careful to not have lab accidents/ explosions. The training is not only about your own batteries, but it is also about your teammates’ batteries as well. We will follow

some methods/examples to learn how to motivate ourselves and our teams, friends and the people surrounding us. Cultural Differences Olga Rostkowska, Onur Küçükerdoğan Cultures have different values, different believes, include different lifestyles. Why is it important for us to understand those differences? What does it add to our development, as young people and European citizens? What can we learn from it? It's important to understand cultural differences to alleviate the fear of unknown. Being familiar with something facilitates acceptance. What it could add to us as people would be the end of ignorance and prejudice. In a working environment, it helps to bring up the best in your team and truly enjoy the benefits of the multicultural surrounding. EMSA needs leaders! Safa Canşi Steve Jobs, Martin Luther King, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, Sir Alex Ferguson. Which common word describes those dissimilar types of people who had quite different occupations, aims and who lived in different situations, epochs, facilities? What made them unique among others? What collects them under the same umbrella? Let’s go on a trip into the “Leaders’ world”.

During this training we will discover the difference between “leadership” and “management” concepts and have some tricks from global successful leaders to be a “good leader”. Think global act local! Recently, though, facing increasingly more diverse settings has started making you queasier — you're unsure if how you talk to patients is effective; you have doubts on the proper stance for an interview; you've even started wondering whether people are truly listening to you. The good news is you can overcome fear and perform exceptionally well! Whether you're a rookie or an expert at the gift of the gab, this training session is set to be a game changer. You'll get to analyze what you've been doing wrong and right, know how to address different occasions accordingly, be taught the holy commandments on how to escape the infamous "death by powerpoint", and learn to better communicate within teams. United Colours of a Team: Team Building Skills Damla Yağmur, Sezgi Yıldırım The instruments in an orchestra are the most meaningful while they create their harmonious sounds. Team building stands as the key stone of any individual work done by multiple people. Have you ever felt like a piece that completed harmony? Tasted the beauty of becoming one with many, in a classroom, a stadium, a park, or a surgery room? Even more, have you ever had the desire for these things? This
training is a medium in which we will see the chemistry, hear the accord, and feel the rhythm of teaming up, and all colours are welcome. "Life is a crisis - so what!" - Problem solving skills Bogdan Kovachev, Melike Pelin Özdoğru Problems should not be viewed as obstacles to avoid. Instead learn how you can overcome every problem with ease, and change the phrase “obstacle” with “opportunity”, because we see problems as opportunities for personal growth. At this session you will be expected to challenge yourself and learn how to think like a master problem solver. With the skills acquired, you will start to see the unsolvable as a challenge to conquer, and you will start using the problem solving process to your everyday life.

There are so many tools to improve the attractiveness of your presentation which are as important as your body language, changing tone and pitch of your voice and your smile. When you create your amazing presentation and shine on the stage with confidence, even though you deliver information about “Rollerskating in Antarctica” all professors' applause will come for you! Wants job, gets job! The road to excellent interviews Sofia Ribeiro With the end of Medical School approaching, you might think of applying to a job...and there are the positions at our local organization, international posts opening, fellowships, maybe a Masters or a PhD... And you start drafting your Motivation Letter, but you don’t know how to sell yourself. And then here it comes the CV, it has been months since you’ve updated it. But well, if you manage all of this and the interview day comes...PANIC!! The good news: after this training, no more panic - you will become a master in job applications.

Meeting dedicated to Active and Healthy Ageing (AHA) open group of EMSA Olga Rostkowska Ageing population is a fact. It affects every social sector, health-care very much included. Regardless of your medical specialty, you will see more and more silver hair figures crossing the corridors of the medical institutions you’ll get bond to. How to embrace the change called ‘the white tsunami’ and what has the world been going so far to respond to this demographic trend? We warmly invite you to the first meeting of the EMSA Active and Healthy Ageing (AHA) Working Group which has been established this year. We will discuss what EMSA has done so far in this topic. We will brainstorm what can be delivered by EMSA when thinking about the Elderly members of our societies. The participants will decide themselves which healthy behaviours would suit them best when developing together individual strategies for a life-style meant to extend not only the years but also time in good condition. If you wish to be part of the EMSA WG and broaden your knowledge, stay up-dated and take part in the international activities on AHA, this session is a place where you should pop-by. Advocacy Workshop - Tearing Down the Pay Wall: How Medical Students Can Play a Critical Role in Unlocking the World’s Research (And Already Have) Nick Shockey, Right to Research Coalition Students across the world are already playing a significant role in unlocking the world’s research — medical and otherwise — for all to read and build upon. Medical students have already worked successfully with groups ranging from the British Medical Association to the Obama Administration to the University of Nairobi to open up access to the medical literature. This workshop will build on the earlier Open Access 101 session to describe how you can get involved at the university, national, and international levels to make medical articles available to all and how medical students have already been successful in doing so.

On 7th September, parallel with the GA Elections, the National Coordinators of EMSA (EMSA-NCs) will meet during the NC-session. Since the EMSA General Assembly in Athens the position of National Coordinator (NC) is obligatory. Having this position mandatory makes it easier for the EEB to communicate with the FMOs, but as with everything new, there is room for improvement. During this session for NC we will try to find the best way to make fruitful use out of this new national ´layer´. We invite all NCs and interested Local Coordinators (LCs) from countries without an NC to this session!
Twinning Project Market is an inter-European fair during which representatives of all FMOs can present their countries, cities and faculties in order to attract possible partners for organising a Twinning Project. At the TP market participants not only offer a Twinning Project opportunity to other FMOs but also sometimes offer the rest of the participants’ samples of their culture, traditional cuisine, customs and their country’s noteworthy monuments and beauties.
