On July 7, 2005, Alec Goecke demonstrated the kind of bravery that defines true character. While waves crashed along the shores of Wagar Beach, Alec—then a junior at Rocky River High School—sprang into action to rescue multiple swimmers caught in a dangerous undertow, including a young girl struggling to stay afloat.
Trained as a lifeguard through the Red Cross and trusted by his local community, Alec’s calm, decisive response turned what could have been a tragic day into a story of courage and composure. In recognition of his heroism, the City of Rocky River officially proclaimed July 25, 2005, as “Alec Goecke Day.”
Alec was a junior at Rocky River High School.
He was a varsity swim team member, sports writer, and Red Cross-certified lifeguard.
Employed by Beach Cliff Trust Association, he was one of 13 trained lifeguards responsible for safety on Lake Erie.
