Every year, The Education and Research Foundation for Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (ERF) dedicates itself to providing approximately $400,000 in vital pilot research and continuing medical education grants to physicians, scientists, and technologists. We recognize the essential role that these grants play in fostering the advancement of our field, as the cycle of academic medicine demands substantial annual investments in pilot research and education for its future At the same time, the field is on the verge of exponential change We’ve taken a long, hard look at our goals and objectives and where our donors’ dollars can be directed for the most impact to attract, recruit, and empower the future of the field
Pilot research stands as a critical need, enabling researchers to trial protocols, refine data collection instruments, and test methods and procedures in preparation for larger studies. This type of research remains vital to young professionals seeking to leverage their findings for larger R01s, propelling their careers forward. Similarly, providing access to educational opportunities through abstract awards, travel grants, fellowships, scholarships, and other grants empowers our recipients to become productive scientists, inspired teachers, exceptional physicians, and accomplished technologists This investment cycle not only brings about improvements in patient care and better health outcomes, but also lays the groundwork for further scientific innovation.
We seek to fund programs that underscore the importance of quality recruiting efforts, reaching potential practitioners at the earliest possible stage. Our multidisciplinary field presents unique training considerations and opportunities, emphasizing the importance of nurturing talent across diverse backgrounds and experiences The only way we will be able to meet our workforce needs is by broadening our pool of talent We will achieve this by raising awareness of our field’s promise and equipping these individuals to pursue careers about which they are passionate By embracing a workforce that reflects a spectrum of perspectives, we unlock groundbreaking solutions and enhance the adaptability of our students, researchers, providers, and educators.
ERF must create and fund education programs designed for the undergraduate, high school, and middle school levels to attract students to the field through early exposure to STEM education Undergraduate programs can be designed to foster a passion for research, innovation, and collaboration Scholarships, internships, and access to state-of-the-art facilities can inspire those at the undergraduate level to explore the limitless possibilities in nuclear medicine We will nurture curiosity, provide clinical exposure, and make clear a pathway for students who want to explore STEM careers that contribute to human health. It is our vision to increase awareness and knowledge of the nuclear medicine career pathway and the diverse array of specialties and professions within it. All of this will serve to bolster the graduate pipeline and ensure the sustainability of the nuclear medicine workforce for the future
