When you think of Jack Rhoades you cannot help but think of the Midwest Stud Ram Sale. Jack’s professional interest and much of his personal passion was focused on the sheep industry. From the sheep unit at Mizzu to decades at the Midwest Sale, Jack provided leadership and worked timelessly to ensure everything was done well. Even as Sale Chairman, he did not hesitate to jump in behind the scenes and do anything that was needed. His volunteer attitude, sense of community and pride of Missouri and the sale was always evident. Much success of the Midwest Sale for the past 50 years can be attributed to Jack Rhoades. Portion from Obituary: Jack graduated from Mexico High School in Mexico, MO in 1951 and graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1957 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture. He was a Research Specialist and worked for the Animal Sciences Department at the University of Missouri Sheep Farm in Columbia, MO for over 40 years. He won the University of Missouri Staff Advisory Council Staff Recognition Award in 1987. Jack was a member of many associations, including the Missouri Sheep Producer’s Association, the Missouri Montadale Sheep Association, and the Missouri Hampshire Sheep Association. He worked at the Midwest Stud Ram Sale in Sedalia, MO where he was sales chairman for over 50 years. He also worked at the livestock shows at the Missouri State Fair and Boone County Fair. Peggy Rhoades passed away shortly after Jack. They were married for over 60 years and had three children, Paul, Becky and Dan.
Kim Ketchum
There is his trademark smile! Even while he unloaded a semi of new shiny red gates at shows and sales across the country, he always had time for a chat. Kim was first and foremost a sheepman raising some of the best Suffolks in the nation. His enthusiasm for the industry made him a good businessman as he understood his customers and shared their passion. Kim was always a supporter and promoter of the industry and was generous especially in his sponsorship of youth events.
_________________________________
Portion from Obituary: Kim was actively involved in 4-H and FFA throughout school. He graduated from Edwardsville High School in 1971 and then attended trade school. He has been a member of the Operating Engineers Local 520 for 49 years. At age 10, Kim started showing Suffolk sheep. He began traveling the country showing and fitting sheep for Bill Heggemeier. While traveling the country he saw a need for equipment to be used specifically for sheep, and this is how Ketcham’s Sheep Equipment began in 1977. Showing sheep became a family tradition with his children and grandchildren. Kim was the foundation of the Ketcham family legacy. After 43 years in business, people that started out as customers became lifelong friends. Serving the sheep industry gave him great joy. He was a member of the Suffolk Sheep Association and a board member for several years. Kim was a big supporter of the numerous sheep organizations. He enjoyed hunting, especially with his son, Kerry and grandson, Koy.
Shepherd, cowboy poet, unique, genuine, kind, funny and unforgettable are just a few words used to describe Rod. His intelligence of not just the sheep industry but of life, was evidence of great common sense, being well read and having a razor-sharp wit. For decades in the evenings in sheep barns across the nation, fellow shepherds have gathered to listen to Rod’s storytelling. Rod’s love of the sheep industry and knowledge of animals was part of the fabric of his being. He would teach, share history and life lessons in nearly every conversation. If you listened, it was always done with humor! He is a legend that is greatly missed. Portion from Obituary: Rod was a member of 4-H, FFA and travelled the county and state fair circuits throughout his life time. Rod was responsible for mentoring many young people during his career in the sheep industry, for whom many are still involved and credit their successes to his encouragement and guidance along the way. Due to Rod’s reputation of excellence in the sheep industry, he was asked to provide consultation on how to improve an owner’s flock, both nationally and internationally. Rod’s natural talent, combined with hard work and experience in the industry, led to him being highly sought after as a judge for state fairs, the International Livestock Exposition, and major shows and sales across the United States, Canada, Mexico and Columbia, South America. Although Rod was known for his expertise in the sheep industry, it was the manner to which he executed the work and his personal style that was most impressive. Rod loved people! Rod was well-read and had many interests, which led to his long-lasting friendships inside and outside the sheep industry. Rod had a talent for story-telling, with the charisma to bring people together, while never failing to make them laugh. Rod could tell stories for hours at a time and when finished, those listening wanted more.
Members of the Annuschat Family
You always knew when the Annuschat boys unloaded at Sedalia. Ron would be in the office telling us all about his yearling ewes and wondering how the class would be split. Each year he brought so many that recruiting show help was a big task, and the Annuschat ewes did not disappoint! Hearing the enthusiasm and excitement about their entries will be missed this year at Sedalia.
Gerard Simon
One of the original “Bandits” as Larry Mead dubbed Gerard and Brent Koops (and sometimes Bret Oelke and Travis Snyder were included in that gang!) they were always together. These ringmen at Sedalia for decades, were best known for their antics during their breaks at the sale. They may have explored nooks and crannies of Sedalia that few have seen! Then they came back to the barn sharing stories, laughs and always looking for the “buy of the sale”! Gerard was the straight man for Koops’ stories and had that unique giggle that let you know they were getting close to the punch line! During the year, an occasional phone call from Gerard would come as he was checking in on the latest. As with any conversation, even on serious subjects, it was filled with laughter.

The matriarch of the Baugh and Dunn family is prominent throughout the history of the Montadale breed. Mary Ellen’s legacy continues through her daughters and grandchildren. As they carry the torch to future generations, so will grow the Baugh and Dunn story while continuing to further the sheep industry.

Mary Ellen was a lifelong shepherd, with her father beginning their Montadale flock in 1945, and then continuing Baugh & Dunn Montadales when her father Olin and husband Larry entered into a partnership in 1958. Their flock is now the oldest continuous Montadale flock in the United States. She enjoyed attending various fairs and sheep shows, never missing a Missouri State Fair since 1975. She loved and enjoyed seeing her sheep showing family at each of these events. Mary Ellen participated in Ladies Lead Line for many years, often wearing outfits made for the Make It Yourself With Wool contest. Continuing the tradition, she made many wool outfits for her daughters and grandaughters.

It is very important that all buyers obtain health papers on their purchases as your respective State Veterinarians receive the sale information. SALE GUARANTEE: EXCEPT FOR THOSE STATED IN THE BELOW GUARANTEE, THERE ARE NO WARRANTIES, EITHER EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED, AS TO THE MERCHANTABILITY OR FITNESS FROM A PARTICULAR PURPOSE WITH RESPECT TO THE ANIMALS BEING SOLD IN THIS SALE. The warranties and guarantees set forth in the below guarantee are in lieu of all other warranties, either expressed or implied and the remedies provided therein shall be the sole and exclusive remedy of the buyer, or any party claiming throught the buyer, for any breach of warranty or guarantee therein, and all other obligations or liabilities. 1) Every animal sold will be guaranteed as a breeder if properly handled. It shall be the responsibility of the buyer to return a non-breeder to the seller in acceptable breeding condition. The seller, after a fair trial and the animal is found to be a non-breeder, shall have the privilege of replacing the animal with one of equal value to the satisfaction of the buyer and seller, or refunding the purchase price. This guarantee shall not apply to any animals that are shown subsequent to the date of the sale, for the year shown. 2) Notification of non-breeder males must be made to the seller prior to January 1st following the sale. Notification of non-breeder females must be made to the seller prior to April 1st following the sale. 3) Neither the sale managers nor the sponsoring organization can or will assume any responsibility as to the authenticity of the pedigrees or bloodline information provided in the sale catalog, on pen cards, or otherwise, and the subsequent genetic performance of any animals purchased. All such information must be accepted at face value. Any special guarantees or claims offered by individual consignors is strictly between the consignor and buyer, and will not be enforced by the sale management or the sponsoring organization 4) This guarantee shall constitute a contract between the buyer and the seller only, and no other parties, including but not limited to breed associations, Midwest Sale Committee, or Heartland Livestock Services, assume any liability, legal or otherwise, expressed or implied. 5) Sellers failing to comply with the provisions of the sale Guarantee or with specific breed rules may be subject to being barred from registering, transferring or selling sheep in breed sanctioned sales for a specific period of time or until the matter is resolved.
ATTENTION BUYERS: SPECIAL HEALTH PERMIT REQUIREMENTS & EXPORT INFORMATION US BUYERS: Your local or state veterinarian should be able to update you concerning any special regulations concerning the health requirements for animals entering your state. The sale veterinarian will prepare standard, interstate health papers for transportation between states, but it is the buyer’s responsibility to be cognizant of and adhere to the entrance requirements for his own state. While entry permits can be obtained from you state office from while in Sedalia, this can often be done prior to your arrival at the sale. CANADIAN BUYERS: Please contact a federal veterinarian for a detailed list of requirements for importation of sheep into Canada. You will need to be familiar with the health requirements for entry of animals purchased through public auction. Canadian buyers will have to make arrangements to have any animals purchased tested for Blue Tongue and Brucella Ovis. Cost for federal health papers, any tests beyond the normal sale tests and shipping arrangements will be at the buyers expense. Sale management can provide assistance with these test and shipping arrangements. MEXICAN BUYERS: Please contact a federal veterinarian for a detailed list of requirements for importation of sheep into Mexico. You will need to be familiar with the health requirements for entry of animals purchased through public auction. Cost for federal health papers, any tests beyond the normal sale tests and shipping arrangements will be at the buyers expense. Sale management can provide assistance with these test and shipping arrangements. --- Page 29 ---
