hello Midwest Mama readers!

I am Andrea, Editor of The Midwest Mama, and I am thrilled to share our second edition with you. If you are reading this magazine for the first time, welcome! This publication is for you.

I have to admit, creating a vision and watching it come to life has to be one of my favorite things about being an editor. I get giddy when I start to see my design ideas transform into beautiful content about REAL WOMEN pursuing their career goals. Trust me when I say, you will love this edition.

Months ago, I introduced this retro holiday idea to the girls (my Midwest Mama team) and we began our long hours of brainstorming, researching, styling, photographing and designing. The holiday season can sometimes feel overly advertised and marketed but we wanted to show off our community in a different light.

Midwest Mama defines “MAMA” as:

a strong, powerful woman—regardless of age, race or situation… and whether she has children or not. The characteristics of a mother are universal, and they translate into our work, our communities and our families. I created this community to highlight women in business, but also to encourage and support them during their journey.

In my home, the holidays are pure magic. I don’t know if it’s the crisp weather, the delicious food or the décor….but it sparks such happiness, coziness and joy. But sometimes the holiday season can also be “oh so frightful” as we navigate how to balance the fun family festivities, long hours of work and even longer nights of wrapping!

Within these pages you will find tips on how to embrace these precious moments, gift ideas and career tips from women with years of experience.

You will get to know some amazing women who are creating their own products, educating their community, starting nonprofits and empowering women daily to pursue their passion and fulfill their purpose.

I hope you enjoy our second edition and have a wonderful holiday season!

How to Find Peace in a Busy Season

The hustle and bustle of the holidays is real! As a mother of three, the laundry list of holiday "to do’s” seems never ending. Between school plays, holiday bucket lists, gift shopping, outfits to plan for family photos, fancy dinners to make...it can feel pretty overwhelming. As mothers - we do it all. Don't let this season be wrecked by the weight of all of the tasks.

SHELBIE TODD: Social Coordinator, Influencer Extraordinaire, Wife and Mom to three (almost four!)

You Can’t Juggle It All

Ditch The Expectations

Setting expectations can make or break me. Anyone else? I sometimes have to check in with myself when I begin to expect things to be "perfect" or "complete." Take each day at a time, each moment at a time. Picture perfect for instagram? Kick the expectations out the door! Be present, hope for the best, communicate your feelings and wishes... but let it be what it is!

Don't Let Your Blessings Become Your Burdens

When I start to feel the burden of burnout, I step back. Make a list of what you’re grateful for and what means the most to you. I usually realize the things that I thought were stressing me… were amazing moments or opportunities I am self-sabotaging.

Ah, motherhood…a constant juggle. In this acrobatic act of life, we think we can juggle it all. Take a step back to identify everything you are juggling. Which balls are glass? Which balls will break and damage if broken? Which balls are rubber? Which balls will bounce back with no harm?

As a chronic people pleaser, this helped me realize not everything needs to be treated as glass. You may find yourself putting something ahead of the real glass balls in your life. Glass for me looks like: my children, my husband, family - these are commitments I do not want to drop. Anything else can be adjusted, put on hold, or delegated and all will be okay. We are incredible women who can do it all…but we can’t always do it all well. Give yourself grace.

I hope this holiday you can take a step back to find peace in the hustle and bustle. It's truly such a beautiful time of year.

Thanksgiving Toddler Tricks with Andrea + Shelbie!

As moms of toddlers, we know the holidays can be hectic! Here are some tips on how to keep the littles engaged and happy during holiday festivities.

Keep them involved In the kitchen! Let them help prepare a dessert or play with measuring cups and spoons.

Let them set their kiddie table! Grab some kid-friendly tableware and encourage them to set their own table.

Encourage them to help clean up! Our toddlers love to pick up trash and throw it away. Little steps like this turn into great deeds.

Coloring activities are a great way to keep the kids engaged while adults small talk around the family table.

Ashley Felthaus, our Leading Lady and Owner of Annabelle Arthur Boutique, is grinding it out amid raising four children, plus all things home and family. While dreams for her business are BIG, currently it’s fulfilling her need for self care and a creative outlet.

Running her boutique out of a room in her house, Ashley is still in the early stages of owning a business. She is able to breathe life into this passion project thanks to her amazing support system; specifically her husband and mother. Even better, what an inspiration she is to her kids as they watch her build something from the ground up.

“Our home office has turned into my in-home boutique/storage/office. This is where I do all of my inventory, steaming, tagging, shipping, embroidery, etc. It can feel a little small and cramped at times, but I am so grateful to have a room for my business…I want my kids to see firsthand the importance of following your heart and doing what makes you happy!”

As a passion project, Ashley candidly shares that while her goal is for the boutique to provide for her family, currently she’s reinvesting nearly everything back into her business to keep it growing.

As she continues to nurture her love for people and fashion, we are 100% here for Annabelle Arthur Boutique and love watch ing Ashley mold and shape this beautiful business.

Meet Tanisha Akers, the Macy's personal stylist and fast friend you never knew you needed.

Ever thought to yourself, “I have nothing to wear!” or “I don’t know what to wear!”

We’ve ALL been there and I for one have never thought to seek help in this depart ment. Maybe it never occurred to me, it felt out of reach or just not for me. After meeting Tanisha for the first time as she helped some clients of a non-profit organization get gussied up for a special redcarpet event, I was touched by her charm, comfortable attitude and gracious way of pulling them out of their shells.

Instead of those familiar phrases above, I heard “I never would have picked this out!” “I look amazing, ooh yes this is just too cute!” The joy. It’s simple, I know. It’s materialistic, I know! However, there is a joy that’s found in self-confidence, that each of us need and certainly desire.

Tanisha found from an early age that what gave her joy was making others feel their best. Today, as a stylist with Macy’s she loves not only being able to help her customers with their wardrobes, but also their homes, kitchens, baths and everything in between!

We asked Tanisha about the process for identifying her client’s personal style. She had the best idea to come up with a handy little quiz to quickly suggest what category your personal style likely falls into (totally channeling our shared fondness of Teen Magazine!).

And hey...if you need more help than our cheesy little quiz (C’mon you know you wanna fill it out…) You too, can be graced with the talents of Tanisha herself, by setting up a free appointment at www.macys.com/s/personal-stylist.

Personal Styling is for everyone! I create a judgment free zone. I don’t care what your body type is, we can enhance or diminish anything with wardrobe. I LOVE making people feel good. " - Tanisha

With Grace B. Bold is a clothing brand empowering women to unveil their self-esteem and rebuild their identity. Your Diagnosis Doesn’t Define You.

photography Aiden McCarthy 45 | STYLE + INSPO

Since 2017, we’ve been reinventing fashion for function. What began as a brand to support women with breast cancer has grown into an inclusive fashion collec tion that offers products to support a variety of needs that women have. We support women who have undergone breast surgery or other upper body surgeries, those who are experiencing hair loss, breastfeeding women, or anyone who is simply looking for clothing that’s beautiful and adaptive.

Our brand is innovative in its fashion-driven approach to functional design. As a fashion designer with multiple design degrees from the University of Cincinnati’s DAAP program, I was able to approach the challenges many women face when undergoing treatment for breast cancer with both fashion and function in mind.

Staying true to our roots, With Grace B. Bold was founded right here in Cincinnati, OH. We support our community in many ways; we manufacture locally and have a giveback program that supports women at local breast cancer treatment centers.

With Grace B. Bold was largely inspired by my mom’s journey from a diagnosis with breast cancer to survivorship; she herself is an incredibly inspiring and empowering woman. Her experiences shaped many aspects of this brand and have inspired me to do some thing to help all women faced with battling breast cancer.

You might never expect to learn of the arduous road she’s traveled. She would tell you that her energy and relentless spirit has come from dedicating her life to helping others affected by the same hardships she faced in raising and losing a son to Cerebral Palsy.

Tammy became a mother at the young age of 15 and her son D’Jonté (Tae) was born with cerebral palsy after experiencing a traumatic birth. Cerebral palsy, a congenital disorder that affects muscle tone, movement and posture is caused by abnormal brain development, often before birth. Her life was immediately changed as her heart burst with love for her first-born son, yet the road ahead would be riddled with challenges of being a teen mom of a child with special needs. Despite the uphill climb, Tammy went to college, pursued a career, built and bought an ADA compliant home and finally came to a point in her life where she was thriving.

But her world would come crashing down on one ordinary day in the winter of 2011. It was that day she heard the words no mother should ever have to hear. Her child was gone, having succumbed to complications caused by his condition. He was just 15 years old. Tae was doing fine the day before; Tammy was devastated.

Tammy Floyd-Westmoreland, Author and Founder of Their Voice of Greater Cincinnati and Qute Cosmetics, could brighten up a pitch-black room with her incredible smile and dynamo personality.
photography Bird & Rose Photography styling Macy’s 50

I asked how she was able to work through the grief and how she was able to regain her hope and she shared, “Three months after his passing I found out that I was pregnant with my daughter, Talyn Alexis. Being pregnant was one way I was able to stay focused and not slip into depression; already being a mom of two and a nurse, I knew that my baby could feel what I was feeling and I didn't want to stress my unborn child. My daughter is what gave me hope."

“Christmas has always been my favorite holiday, but that had been the last holiday that I got to spend with my son, so that year it was hitting me much differently. I remember trying to help my husband and son Isaiah decorate the tree and I just couldn't! Eight months pregnant I sat on the couch with tears in my eyes; just thinking about it makes me tear up again. Talyn Alexis, my baby girl, decided to put a smile back on my face and the joy back into Christmas by being born on Christmas Eve!”

In a twist of irony, Tammy’s husband also lost his son Jordan to cerebral palsy at the age of five. Together they felt that they “had three kids in one, because her brothers are living through her.” She brings joy to their family in ways they never expected and they call her their “rainbow child!”

Tammy’s perseverance, passion and love for her son led her to founding Their Voice of Greater Cincinnati in 2017. The non-profit provides education, support, and resources for families affected by cerebral palsy and other extraneous intellectual and physical needs.

Tammy made it her life's mission to help as many families as possible who are often having to navigate these tumultuous waters alone and without the resources they need.

The organization is creating a deep community of support by offering tangible assistance such as respite hours, house modifications, self-care, cleaning services, virtual workshops and support groups.

Tammy also created Qute Cosmetics with her daughter Talyn to honor her son and to help her keep her brother’s memory alive because she never got to meet him.

Tammy’s biggest goal and hope for the organization is that it will continually grow as the need in our local community seems endless. For the second time, United Way’s Black Empowerment Works awarded a grant to the organization; B13 and Cincinnati Children’s Medical Hospital are also providing financial support. More organizations are seeing the value in their services because having ongoing support for their respite program is huge in the cerebral palsy community. “It literally helps save lives, and keep families together.” Tammy says.

Her advice for people who know families who are affected by cerebral palsy is to simply “Be supportive. Sometimes all we want is some company; invite them and their child out! We just want to be included and know that we are not being left out! Ask if you can come sit with their loved one while they run some errands or take a self-care break!”

“ My goal is for my families to know and understand that there is ‘life after cerebral palsy’ and for those who are in my situation and have lost their son or daughter to cerebral palsy – there is ‘Life After Death! We will always be Their Voices!”

5 ways to reinvent how you communicate in 2023

Today, it’s common for folks to have some form of hybrid work experience. But this begs the question – how do I stay engaged with my team? I used to stop by a cubical to chat it up or even ask a colleague to walk with me for coffee. This hybrid workplace has changed how we communicate, and yet I still crave that connection to communicate with my teammates. Here are five easy ways for you to roll into 2023 ready to keep your communication spark ignited.

1. Virtual Coffee

Sure, you are both working remotely or don’t have the same in-office days, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still get coffee. Send an invite to a colleague once a month and block time for “virtual coffee.” You don’t need an agenda for these. Make these a fun way to stay in touch and build relationships within your team.

2. Connect Hours

Make time to get together in person. This can be during work hours or even a fun after work celebration. One thing we have learned over the past few years is that it’s important to celebrate the wins. Making time for connect hours to cheer each other on and share success stories keeps every one motivated and engaged. Don’t forget to give yourself a pat on the back too!

4. Set Expectations

3. Friday Uplift Notes

Take five minutes out of your Friday to send a happy email to one colleague or friend (who doesn’t even work with you). Lift this person up by congratulating them on a small win or celebrating something that didn’t go right but they learned from. Give them something cheerful to smile about so they go into the weekend with a positive mindset. I promise, this will uplift you too!

We all get bombarded with emails every day. Make yours stand out! Start each email with a purpose and (if it makes sense) end each of your notes with an “action item” in bold so everyone reading it knows what they need to do. If your email doesn’t have a clear action item or purpose, maybe rethink this. What is the reason for my email? What do I expect to get from this? When you start to set a purpose or action item, you will see others catch on and do it too.

5. Take Breaks

Lastly, give yourself some grace. The ideas above help you connect with others and build relationships. Don’t forget a very important relationship you need to manage –the one with yourself. When you have a big meeting or presentation, block 10-15 minutes prior for you to reflect and mentally prepare yourself. When you rush from one meeting to another you get burnt out and aren’t always as prepared to clearly communicate your intentions. When you give yourself this mental break, you will go in and crush it!

5 Key Takeaways from One Year in Business

MAKE BUSINESS DECISIONS THAT ARE BASED ON DATA

This sounds obvious, but it’s actually really challenging. In our business, there have been numerous occasions where we’ve been surprised to learn that our assumptions about a product were incorrect. An item we thought would sell great may be selling poorly and vice versa! It’s important to utilize the various tools we have at our fingertips with today’s technology to better understand how our business is performing and to make informed decisions.

At Gigi & Poppi, we strive to offer thoughtfully curated collections we would proudly dress our own babies in – and then we adjust our buying habits based on real time data from customers like you.

organic, 100% cotton, not on Amazon, and eco-friendly. Time and time again, we see that our highest quality products always sell out. Don’t sacrifice quality for price and invest in products that are true to your brand’s values.

You may have started your business with one vision only to realize there is a business model that is working better. Don’t be rigid with your strategic planning. Find out what is working and pivot. You want your business to be profitable. Be willing to let your it be as unique and ever-changing as you are!

THE “BORING” STUFF MATTERS

Keeping your books balanced in Quickbooks may not be the most exciting task. But, it is just as important as the big, bold, fancy brand work. Do your homework. If you build a solid foundation, you will have fewer roadblocks in the future.

STRUCTURE = FREEDOM

You’ve started your own business and you aren’t chained to your chair eight hours a day in a cubicle staring at walls. YAY! But, it’s important to remember that with all this “freedom” comes great responsibility. Implement routines that allow you to stay on task, meet deadlines and make progress. We use a project management tool, and play on each

other’s strengths to maintain achievable goals within reasonable timelines. Working with a business partner on a startup requires accountability and trust. Being sisters also allows us to give each other grace during busy periods in our personal lives.
