Famous For... The origin of the name “South Dakota” comes from the Sioux tribes who inhabited the area and called themselves Dakota. South Dakota is part of Tornado Alley, located along the center of the US, where tornadoes frequent during the summer months. South Dakota had 1,149 tornadoes from 1950 to 1995 and ranks 10th in the nation for frequency of tornadoes. Ellsworth Air Force Base is located near Rapid City and hosts the 28th Bomb Wing, one of only two B-1B Lancer strategic bomber wings in the entire US Air Force. In 1803, the US purchased the Louisiana Territory, which included South Dakota, from Napolean Bonaparte. www.MidwestMeetings.com
