From the editor:

Welcome to the 12th issue of Midwest Herdsman!

As I sit down to reflect on this past year, I’m filled with pride and gratitude. Reaching the 12th issue is a testament to the strength and dedication of this industry. When I took on the responsibility of continuing the legacy of Midwest Herdsman, I knew I was stepping into something special—a platform that celebrates the heart, hard work, and stories of those who make this industry what it is today.

Through the uncertainty, the highs and the lows, you all continue to show up - for yourselves and for each other. As times continue to evolve and change, I hope that Midwest Herdsman continues to be a constant in your operations and your marketing plans. Midwest Herdsman is quickly expanding outside of the quad-state area and is reaching new audiences with every issue. It has been a blessing to be on this ride with all of you.

Midwest Herdsman had some shifts and changes of its own in 2024 and I am excited about what is to come in the upcoming year. I hope your barns and hearts are full with the possibility for tomorrow and excitment for the future.

This journey would not be possible without your unwavering support—the readers, contributors, and advertisers. Your passion for this industry reminds me daily why this work matters.

Here’s to the next chapter of Midwest Herdsman—and to you, this loyal community, for making it all possible. As always, THANK YOU to those whose support never wavers. It is truly a dream to be able to work with people like you and for that I am forever grateful.

Jayde Reilly thank you!

SYNCH PROTOCOL FOR CATTLE

5 DAY CIDR - (8 DAYS TO BREED)

The 5 day CIDR is a more appropriate synchronization for heifers but can also be used in cows. NOTE: this is a fixed time method and heats are less likely to be observed. Trust your protocol and breed per the schedule. This set up begins with a shot of GnRH and implanting a CIDR into the vaginal tract. Then, 5 days later, the CIDR should be removed and the female should recieve a shot of PG. An additional shot of PG is needed 8-12 hours later. Breed these females 70-74 hours after the removal of the CIDR

7 DAY CIDR - (10 DAYS TO BREED)

This is the most common way to synchronize beef cows. Start with a shot of GnRH and implant a CIDR into the vaginal tract. Pull the CIDR 7 days later and give a shot of PG. Only one shot of PG is necessary at the time of the CIDR pull, results improve with a second shot of PG 8-12 hours later. Cattle should show heat 60-84 hours after removing the CIDR. For best results, use a shot of GnRH are time of AI service. This protocol can be implemented as a fixed time breeding by breeding at 60-72 hours after removal of the CIDR

7&7 CIDR - (17 DAYS TO BREED)

The 7 & 7 synch is a longer process with more steps, but is very effective at bringing cows into heat in a tight window. This method will start with a PG shot and the implanting of a CIDR in the vaginal tract. A week (7 days) later, give a shot of GnRH. Another 7 days later, pull the CIDR and give a shot of PG. Producers can give another shot of PG 8-12 hours later for optimal results but it is not required. Females set up with this method should come into heat 60-72 hours after the removal of the CIDR

USING CIDRS AND SYNCHRONIZATION

PROTOCOLS IN CATTLE REPRODUCTION

Cattle reproduction management has advanced significantly in recent years, offering producers tools and techniques to improve herd fertility and streamline breeding operations. Among these advancements, the use of Controlled Internal Drug Release (CIDR) devices and synchronization protocols has become a cornerstone in modern reproductive programs. This article provides an educational overview of these tools and their applications in cattle reproduction.

What Are CIDRs?

A CIDR is a T-shaped device designed to release a controlled amount of progesterone when inserted into a cow or heifer’s vaginal tract. Progesterone is a hormone that regulates the estrous cycle and maintains pregnancy. By administering progesterone through CIDRs, producers can control and manipulate the estrous cycle to optimize breeding outcomes.

Benefits of Using CIDRs

Estrus Synchronization: CIDRs help synchronize estrus cycles within a group of cows or heifers, allowing for more efficient timed artificial insemination (AI).

Improved Fertility: Synchronization can improve conception rates by ensuring cows are bred at the optimal time.

Efficient Use of Labor: Concentrating breeding and calving periods reduces labor demands during these critical times.

Flexibility: CIDRs can be used in various synchronization protocols tailored to specific herd needs.

Considerations for Success

Animal Selection: Proper candidate selection is crucial. Cows should have good body condition scores (BCS) and be at least 50 days postpartum.

Protocol Compliance: Adhering strictly to the protocol schedule ensures maximum effectiveness.

Handling and Hygiene: Proper CIDR insertion and removal techniques are vital to avoid infections or injury.

Record Keeping: Accurate records of treatments, estrus observations, and AI dates help evaluate program success and identify areas for improvement.

Economic and Practical Impacts

The implementation of CIDRs and synchronization protocols can significantly enhance the reproductive performance of a herd. While these methods involve upfront costs, the return on investment is evident through improved conception rates, shortened calving intervals, and more uniform calf crops. Additionally, synchronization allows for better utilization of AI genetics, leading to long-term genetic improvements in the herd.

Final Thoughts

Using CIDRs and synchronization protocols is a proven strategy for improving reproductive efficiency in cattle. These tools empower producers to optimize breeding programs, maximize genetic potential, and achieve more predictable and profitable outcomes. With proper planning, execution, and veterinary guidance, CIDRs and synchronization protocols can revolutionize herd management and set the stage for sustained success in cattle reproduction.
