Care for Retired and Infirm Friars

A Message from Michael Gerrity, Chief Advancement Officer
Pandemic, earthquakes, empires rising, empires falling, war after war after war, and eight centuries later the Augustinians are as vitally important and relevant as ever. The virtues they live and preach are as relevant as ever. Ask yourself, “Does the world need more people focusing on goodness, kindness, charity, and justice?” The answer is likely a resounding and emphatic, “YES!” And that is precisely what the Augustinians do as we work in our little corner of the God’s great vineyard with the goal to bring all souls home to Heaven. What greater goal can there be for any true Augustinian.
The Augustinians were just over 100 years old when the infamous “Black Death” struck the world. Low estimates say it killed over one-third of the entire world’s population; over 100 million people at least. Through it all, the Augustinians prayed, suffered, worked, gave hope, fed the poor, cared for the sick, taught, and persevered. Drawing on core values of faith, unity, and love they overcame. That is what they did then, that is what they will do now.
Today, as it was then, they can only do as much as we will help them to do. They have survived these past eight centuries because of people like you who saw the need, prayed, and then reached as deep as they could and shared financially. Despite this horrible pandemic, our working Augustinians, our thirty-one retired and infirm men in Crown Point, our men in formation, and the rural poor of our missions in Northern Peru need your support more than ever. No doubt many of you are suffering in some way or feeling the adverse impacts of prolonged quarantining. That is a fact. It is also a proven fact that the greatest to make yourself feel better, more hopeful, and more whole inside is to reach out and help another.
Today, move us toward the light of a new day. Please pray for the Augustinians and make a gift to your Augustinians – as you direct to retired men, or men in formation, or Peruvian missions. If you do, you will get us all through this horrible pandemic, and in the process your charity and kindness will push back the darkness and bring you and us closer to better days and the light Heaven.
