White House Initiative Names El Monte Promise Foundation a Bright Spot by Christina Davila El Monte
The El Monte Promise Foundation (Promise Foundation) was selected as a Bright Spot in the “Bright Spots in Hispanic Education National Online Catalog.” (http://www.ed.gov/hispanicinitiative). As a Bright Spot, El Monte Promise Foundation will be part of a national online catalog that includes over 230 programs that invest in key education priorities for Hispanics. The announcement was made during a press conference at the launch of Hispanic Heritage Month taking place at Washington, DC on Tuesday, September 15th at 1pm EST. “There has been notable progress in Hispanic educational achievement, and it is due to the efforts of these Bright Spots in Hispanic Education, programs and organizations working throughout the country to
help Hispanic students reach their full potential," said Alejandra Ceja, Executive Director of the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics. “We all want our children to thrive and education is one of the most powerful paths to a successful future,” El Monte Mayor Andre Quintero said. “We are investing in future generations so that they can give back to the communities that believed in them. I am so proud that we received this recognition and thank all the partners who believe in El Monte’s children.” The White House Initiative seeks to leverage these Bright Spots to encourage collaboration between stakeholders focused on similar issues in sharing data-driven approaches, promising practices, peer advice, and effective partnerships, ulti-

other communities need to do across the country to make sure that other students in other communities have the same access to college.” El Monte Promise Foundation received this recognition for its collaborative partnerships with the City of El Monte, El Monte/
South El Monte Chamber of Commerce, El Monte City School District, Mountain View School District, Rio Hondo College, Cal State Los Angeles (CSULA), and University of California Irvine (UCI). This collaborative has established guaranteed enrollment and priority registration for El Monte

For the third year in a row, Beholder won the Zenyatta Stakes, one of the five Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In” races run at Santa Anita’s Autumn Meet on Saturday, September 26. The blistering 97 degree heat meant all the horses in the day’s eleven races waited for, “Riders up,” in the Saddling Barn, rather than in the Parade Ring. But, the intense weather didn’t stop Beholder’s diehard fans from flocking to her saddling stall 40 minutes before her race started, eager to see their favorite. Trainer Richard Mandella’s 5-yearold mare exited the barn to cheers from the crowd. The Grandstand echoed with roars of approval approximately 15 minutes later when she crossed the finish line in front of challenger My Sweet Addiction.
