eryone. Festivities begin Friday, September 4 and run through Sunday, September 27. The fair is closed Mondays (except Labor Day, September 7) and Tuesdays. So, what’s new? Premiering at the fair is “Popnology,” a 33,000 square foot showcase examining current technology inspired by popular culture. Interactive displays include robots and a virtual reality experience modeled on the Star Trek Holodeck. Mars Rovers, a DeLorean used in the “Back to the Future” movies, the T2 Terminator, and R2D2 droids will be on display. “Luminasia,” returns for a second year. The large, illuminated lanterns handcrafted by artisans from China will have new displays including Panda Park and the Kingdom of Birds. Open from 6pm to close, the separate admission price has been lowered to $5. New Orleans’ Mardi Gras is the Flower and Garden
Pavilion’s theme. The Millard Sheets Art Center will feature art and the five human senses. The Grandstand hosts the “End of Summer Concert Series” including the following headliners: Patti LaBelle & Chaka Khan (September 4); Alejandra Guzman & Ana Victoria (September 6); Kool and the Gang (September 11); ZZ Top (September 12); Justin Moore & American Idol’s Kellie Pickler (September 13); Bell Biv DeVoe (September 17); Lynrd Skynrd (September 18); Paquita la del Barrio & Mariachi Reyna de Los Angeles (September 20); The Beach Boys (September 24); Chicago & Boz Scaggs (September 27). Rio Hondo College will receive $1.1 million in grants over the next five years from the U.S. Department of Education to help low-income, first-generation and underrepresented college students pursue transfers to four-year universities in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) majors. The College’s TRIO/ Student Support Services (SSS) Program will receive $220,000 annually to serve 120 program participants. “STEM skills are a primary focus for Rio Hondo College as we seek to prepare our students for their future college goals or for our increasingly demanding 21st century marketplace,” said Rio Hondo College Superintendent/President Teresa Dreyfuss. “This grant

it created its Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA) program. MESA provides
