The Mountain View School District partnered with EcoVoices, an environmental education program of the San Gabriel River Discovery Center Authority to provide 50 third through eighth grade students with an Expedition to the Solar System. The two-week summer expedition was comprised of two guided inquiry adventures including Space Robotics where students designed, devised and deployed Microlanders to explore planetary surfaces and Planetary Geology where
students explored, discovered and learned about ice in the solar system and planetary ecosystems. “We are happy to provide this summer science academy for students,” said Dr. Richard Shope, EcoVoices Director. “We want to stay on course to help kids be and become scientists. By
participating in the program they are exposed to scientific study and learning to be self-directed learners.” In the Planetary Geology class students learned how to classify and identify minerals and crystals using tools geologists use. Students expanded their vocabulary as they
described minerals and crystals as equigrandular, poikilitic, subhedral, and euhedral. They also created 3-D contour maps depicting a planet’s surface. Exploring the solar system, students drew posters, conducted research, and presented their findings about

They were all so involved! I loved it!” commented Claudia Molina, whose tasks included
