Potrero School Teachers Receive Grants from Retired Teachers

Two appreciative Potrero School teachers in the El Monte City School District recently received classroom grants from the California Retired Teachers’ Association #71 (CalRTA-SGV). Principal Liz Raymond was present at the faculty meeting to welcome the CalRTA #71 School Grant Committee to the campus. Secondgrade teacher Yelitza Day had requested a donation for a Vietnamese Rosetta Stone program, English levels one and two, to meet her students’ needs. Rene Siegel, sixth-grade teacher, had asked for funds to help her purchase a wireless printer for the computer lab. Both young women expressed their gratitude for the school grants. This is the tenth year that CalRTA #71 has awarded grants to help teachers fulfill their classroom needs. The grant presentations also serve to acquaint future retirees with the organization. First Emmy Doo Interns Complete LEARNer Program

San Gabriel Valley

Thanks to LEARN (Learning Enrichment & Academic Resources Network), the first group of Emmy Doo interns have completed their 12-week LEARNer Internship Program where they gained valuable work experience in a small business setting, learned business management skills as well as personal financial management. Located in Whittier, Emmy Doo's Cookie and Ice Cream Shop was launched by LEARN this past April as a new social enterprise that will help sustain youth programs for area students as they serve as Emmy Doo employees during their internship period. During this time, students also attended various workshops and took field trips focusing on career

awareness and small business entrepreneurship. “Getting into this internship was one of the best and most productive things I have done in my life so far, said Frontier High School graduate Roman Rocha. "It gave me the push I needed to prepare for life after high school.” “Two years ago I would never have imagined myself joining the LEARNer Program," said Pioneer High School junior Victor Rodriguez. "It taught me to balance my time and get done what needed to be done.” According to LEARN
