Latino Family Literacy Project Helps Mountain View School District by Michele Earle El Monte

The Mountain View School District continues to provide parents and families with educational experiences to support their child’s success in school. A valuable program offered this year for parents and families at a few schools was the Latino Family Literacy Project. A family reading program that teaches parents the importance of establishing a family reading routine with their children, The Latino Family Literacy Project was well received by parents who participated. In addition the program helped both parents and children learn English vocabulary, verbs, grammar, and conversation. The program teaches parents the skills they need to share literature and to be involved in the school-going process with their children. At Voorhis Elementary School, 20 parents participated in the 10-week bilingual and bicultural family
literacy program led by 3rd grade teacher, Juan Orellana. Classes were held once a week for one hour and involved and engaged families by supporting family reading, improving
English language skills and strengthening parents and child interaction. “Each week the parents were given a culturally relevant book in English and Spanish to take home
and read to and with their children,” said Orellana. “We practiced reading aloud in our class and they shared their experiences reading at home. The most important subject for English Learners
