The Whale Tail grants program "distributes funds from sales of the Whale Tail® license plate. The grants support programs "that teach California’s children and the general public to value and take action to improve the health of the state’s marine and coastal resources." The 94 students began by testing the impact of various river pollutants on living organisms in the classroom, followed by a visit to the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, which features a collection of over 11,000 animals representing over 500 different species.
