Madrid’s staff received the surprise announcement at a special staff meeting on Tuesday. The $7,500 School Lounge Makeover® contest is sponsored by California Casualty Insurance and Tanaka, who is retiring this summer wrote a heartfelt entry that was selected from over 30,000 entries nationwide. “I was so excited to find out I won because I never win anything,” Tanaka said. “I’m really happy for the teachers and staff because the area they have used needs serious attention. Our school is 23-years-old and I think everything in the staff lounge is original, and it’s not the most inviting of places. My seven years at Madrid is the longest I have been at any site and it warms my heart to leave something to the incredible people I

work with,” she said. “Many of our staff members were almost in tears when they heard the exciting news.” According to Jana Charles of California Casualty, the School Lounge Makeover® contest started in 2011 and so far 10 school lounges have been made over across the nation. “At California Casualty we appreciate the hard work and dedication teachers and school staff put in each day and we want you to have a nice and inviting place to relax during your breaks and lunchtime. We are thrilled to do this for Bonnie who is an amazing principal and Madrid’s staff.” Also on hand for the special announcement was designer, Mark Canady from Eon Office Products, who will be heading up the lounge’s transformation. The City of El Monte’s Junior Recreation Leader Volunteer Program (JRLVP) has already reached the half-way mark in its inaugural year of existence. Spearheaded by the City of El Monte’s Parks and Recreation Division, the program was initially launched Sept. 2014 to help mentor youth and offer job training. Thus far, it has been a great success. “This program gives teens a proactive and creative outlet,” Mayor Andre Quintero said. “It also challenges students to focus their energy into positive actions that will directly benefit our El Monte community.” The JRLVP presents teens with a unique opportunity to work side by side with the city’s recreation staff on programs and events. The program also provides mentorship and leadership training opportunities for

City teenagers in grades 7th through 12th who wish to enhance their life and work skills and participate in onthe-job training. Teens have embraced the prospect to be involved in the community and make
