Nyquist Wins First Jewel in Triple Crown by Annick J. Downhower Arcadia

It’s possible the roar from the crowd of 22,831 at Santa Anita last Saturday, May 7 echoed all way to Kentucky. Ladies in fancy hats and gents in dapper attire had gathered under cloudy skies to watch live racing and participate in the largest Kentucky Derby party west of Kentucky. The crowd was on its feet for the Derby simulcast, cheering as undefeated Nyquist won. The pre-Derby talk had some analysts doubting Nyquist was up to the race’s 1¼ mile distance. His sire, Uncle Mo, had never been successful at such a length. But, that didn’t stop bettors from making Santa Anita-

based Nyquist the 2 to1 favorite. The sun was casting long shadows over the Churchill Downs track as 20 horses entered the starting gate for the 142nd running of the Derby. Trained by Doug O’Neill and ridden by Mario Gutierrez, Nyquist had drawn post position 13, the same number he had when he won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile last October. When the gates opened, Gun Runner and Nyquist came out fast but then were content to let Danzing Candy take the lead. Near the far turn, Gun Runner moved to challenge Danzing Candy with Nyquist at his side. As

The Mountain View School District and El Monte Union High School District collaborated again this year to present a wonderful concert featuring the school bands from both districts. Over 300 student musicians in sixth through twelfth grade participated in the annual Combined Band Concert held at Mt. View High School. Playing to a standing room only crowd, the students put on an amazing performance. The purpose of the combined concert is to show the student musicians, as well as parents and audience members, the sequential growth of the students’ skills as they progress through the

school music programs at the elementary, middle and high school levels. “Welcome to this exceptional night of beautiful music by our wonderful student musicians,” said Lillian
