City of El Monte Celebrates Grand Opening of State-of-theArt Public Works and Transportation Yard

The City of El Monte celebrated the new home of its much-anticipated stateof-the-art Public Works and Transportation Yard with a grand-opening celebration on Thursday.

“This is another step in the right direction for an improved El Monte,” said Councilmember Juventino “J” Gomez. “This new facility is just one of several notable projects that include our Veterans and senior housing developments, demonstrating that we are investing heavily in a better future for our community.”

SEMHS Launches Swap Meet to Benefit Student Programs So. El Monte

To benefit the school's athletic programs and raise funds for student scholarships, the South El Monte High School PTSA has launched a swap meet every third Sunday of the month. Sellers can take advantage of a great location to exhibit their wares, right off the 60 freeway, and for buyers, free admission and parking.

"The idea of the swap meet came from the need to raise funds to support South El Monte High School students," said Olga H. Lopez, Assistant Principal of Activities. "One of the parents in our PTSA came up with the idea. We had the first one on March 17 and it was very successful."

Last month's swap meet attracted more than 70 vendors and a large crowd of potential buyers scouting the various booths for new and used items and unusual finds.

"We are hoping the swap meet idea really takes off," said Lopez. "In these tough economic times, it will provide a good amount of revenue for our athletics, band and scholarship programs."

Located at 1001 North Durfee Avenue in South El Monte, hours are 7 am to 3 pm. Gates open at 5:30 am for vendors and space is limited. The next swap meet is scheduled for May 19. For additional information, contact Olga H. Lopez at (626) 2585613.

by Mavis Hansen Once again, California weather shows us how lucky we are to live in this wonderful State. The so-called “rainy month” of April has hardly passed and already I am looking forward to the warm months of summer and lots of outdoor activities.

“Everything is Coming Up Roses” will be the President’s theme this year for the El Monte Friend O’’Garden Club. The monthly meeting will be held on Friday, May 3, 2013 at the Norwood Library, 4550. N. Peck Road, El Monte, California. President Rita Cazares will conduct the last meeting of her term of office before the new club officers are installed. In keeping with the theme, “Everything’s Coming Up Roses”, a Rose Show, for members and guests’ will be conducted by Steve Heimple. Awards will be: First Prize for Best Overall Rose, Second Prize for Rose with Best Color, Texture and Structure and Third Place for the Most Promising Rose.

The El Monte Airport Restaurant, Annia’s Kitchen, will cater the special occasion the lunch. The incoming 20132014 Officers are: President, Steve Heimple; First Vice President, Esthela Torres De Siegrist; Second Vice President, David Siegrist; Secretary, Mary Jo Kolakoski and Treasurer, Rita Cazares.

Larry Giangrico will serve, as Parliamentarian and Mavis Hansen will be the Sunshine and Hospitality Chairman and Arboretum Representative.

Installing Officer will be Ms. Sandy Fout. Two new members will be welcomed this month, Susie and John Juarez, daughter and father. The objectives of the El Monte Friend O’Garden Club are to stimulate interest and disseminate knowledge in all phases of gardening, to encourage home gardens and to promote the preservation of natural resources. Membership is open to those who have an active interest in gardening. El Monte Friend O’Garden Club was Organized and Federated in 1956; is a member of the Arboretum District of California Garden Clubs, Inc, The National Council of State Garden Clubs, Inc. and Pacific Region. President’s flower will be the yellow rose.

Student's Corner Random Acts of Kindness

In my faith as a Christian, I’ve learned to notice true wonders of the world. I have really started to see little miracles that appear to be God trying to reach out to people.

Over spring break, I was truly inspired by a man named Salim.

He approached my mother and me at a gas station in my neighborhood. He sang and played guitar for my mom as she pumped gas, in hopes of getting a little spare change. When I got out of the car, he began to sing to me as well. I looked into his eyes and there was a sense of joy. Salim was just happy to

be alive and singing. The fact that a stranger was serenading us at 11:30 p.m. wasn’t the extraordinary part; while he sang to us, a butterfly appeared and flew around us. Every time he opened his mouth to sing, the butterfly fluttered like it was applauding him. I had never seen a butterfly at night, so I knew right away that it was God showing his joy at our happiness. God was joyous because we showed that two people from completely different paths of life can come together and show each other kindness and love. That’s how God intends

for us to treat one another.

In the Gospel of Matthew 25:31-46, it describes how people will be separated based on the things they’ve done for others. It’s telling us that we should be helping one another.

Of course, we helped Salim with food and money, but he helped us as well. He helped my mom and me feel close to God by doing what God would have liked for us to do. We did something for absolutely no gain but ended up gaining the most. In the end, as a Christian, I desire to be in the image of God, and in that moment I felt I was.

LEARN Launches Ice Cream Shop to Aid El Monte Youth

In its' commitment to provide quality afterschool services for grades K through 12 within the communities of El Monte, Whittier, Pico Rivera and La Puente. LEARN (Learning Enrichment & Academic Resources Network) has launched Emmy Doo's, a new social enterprise that will help sustain youth programs for area students.

"Emmy Doo’s is the first cookie and ice cream shop of its kind where business and education coalesce to affirm education equity for children in the Los Angeles area," said Robert Arellanes, LEARN CEO. "All proceeds from Emmy Doo’s will keep school doors open and kids safe in LEARN’s ASPIRE, PREP, and KidsPlay programs."

underserved students.

Local junior and senior high school students will serve as Emmy Doo employees through a 12-week internship program where they will gain not only valuable work expe-

rience and business management skills, but learn personal financial management as well.

Students will also attend various workshops and take field trips focusing on career awareness and small business entrepreneurship.

The store is run by three social enterprise coordinators, one who owns her own candy confectionary business, who are trained on how to

mentor the students. The ice cream and cookie dough are purchased pre-made but the cookies are baked in-house.

"Not only will customers be able to satisfy their sweet tooth from a large selection of ice cream and fresh baked cookies, but they will also be doing their part in investing in future generations," said Arellanes.

Emmy Doo’s, located at 13102 Philadelphia Street in Whittier, celebrated its grand opening March 22 by giving away free ice cream cookie sandwiches during the first hour of its opening. Business hours are Monday through Wednesday from noon until 9 pm, and Thursday through Sunday from noon until 10:30 pm.

“LEARN is excited to be launching Emmy Doo's as a new social enterprise that will help sustain programs for area youth,” said Arellanes. “We hope the public will support our youth by supporting Emmy Doo's, where you can Eat Good and ‘Doo’ Good!”

Rio Hondo College officially celebrated its 50th anniversary in high style with more than 400 public officials, community members, college alumni, emeriti, faculty, staff, and friends gathered for a festive evening at the City of Industry Expo Center Friday, April 19.

The occasion of Rio Hondo’s 50th anniversary provided its Board and administrators the chance to thank and acknowledge the community that initiated plans and funded construction for a community college that began serving students in 1963.

El Monte Mayor Pro Tem Norma Macias has been elected as Chair and Montebello Councilman Jack Hadjinian elected as Vice Chair of the Board of Directors of the Alameda Corridor-East Construction Authority (ACE). The $1.7 billion ACE program in the San Gabriel Valley calls for constructing 22 rail-roadway grade separation projects, where the road goes over or under the railroad, and safety improvements at another 39 crossings.

“I appreciate this vote of confidence as ACE enters into the busiest period ever in its 15-year history,” said Macias, elected Chair at the ACE Board meeting on April 22. “The ACE grade separations are needed to eliminate congestion, emissions from idling vehicles and safety hazards at crossings along the freight rail corridors through our communities which accommodate about 60 percent of the goods arriving in South-

Rio Hondo Forensics Student Wins Gold at National Tourney Whittier

The Rio Hondo Forensics Speech and Debate team brought home gold and two bronze medals after competing in the Phi Rho Pi National Tournament. Hosted by Los Angeles Valley College April 16-20 at the Warner Center Marriott in Woodland Hills, the national competition drew more than 60 college teams and 400 students.

Phi Rho Pi is the National Forensic Association for Community Colleges.

preparation paid off for gold medalist Steven Villescas, 20, who competed against students from all over the country in Prose Interpretation. Vanessa Cazares, 24, earned Bronze Speaker in Prose Interpretation and another Bronze Speaker in Dramatic Interpretation.

Rio Hondo College was represented by ten students, three coaches and two judges, the most ever from the forensics program to attend the national competition.

Cazarez is excited about the growth in the forensics speech and debate program.

"This tournament is extremely competitive," she says, "but I know that our team is progressing. We're getting better and better every year."

Program Coordinator Libby Curiel leads the team along with coaches Grant Tovmasian and Steve Rohr.

Speech faculty Gilbert Puga and Adam Gonzalez also assist.

Gidley School Holds Jog-A-Thon as Fundraiser

Gidley held its 2nd annual Jog-A-Thon recently. All students grades K-8 had the opportunity to participate by running, jogging or walking laps to raise money. Gidley’s goal was $10,000 this year.

Actual monies raised were $6,200.00. The total number of laps ran by students was 13,435. Many parents and teachers walked and jogged with the students.

St. Luke’s Parish Fiesta A Huge Success St. Luke’s Parish Fiesta was held on April 19th, 20th and 21th. This year marked the “26th Annual Fiesta,” which included a car show on Saturday.

Cars lined neighborhood streets and kids could be heard screaming as they enjoyed the variety of fast rides. The aroma of all of the food being served filled the air. People with smiling faces enjoyed the wonderful food selections offered, making repeated trips back to

Rosemead San Gabriel Temple City Rosemead San Gabriel Temple City ‘TIME JOCKEY’ Tale of the Tailings

An Environmental Feat …. The Mother Lode area of California’s Gold Country is the home to a number of engineering feats which were initiated by the Gold Rush.

Kennedy Tailings Wheel Park in Jackson, California is the home to one of the more amazing environmental construction projects in the early 1900’s. In 1848, the mining site named Botellas was founded and the next year the mining camp Jackson Creek was established. The camp housed many of the miners of lucrative Kennedy Mine.

The Kennedy Gold Mine, the deepest in the world when it was closed in 1942, the Kennedy Tailings Wheel System and the historic mining camp of Jackson Gate make up the entire tailing wheel system.

So what is a ‘tailing wheel’?

Well first let’s start with the Kennedy Mine, which was a combination of three Quartz claims filed in 1851. By 1860, the three claims merged into one mine under the ownership of Andrew Kennedy and the Kennedy Mining and Milling Corporation was established in 1886. Over $34 million dollars in gold was reaped from the Kennedy Mine, making it and the Central Eureka mine the richest gold mines in the entire Mother Lode.

The mine was over a mile deep when it closed in 1942 and over 4,500 feet below sea level. To put it proper perspective, the mine had a vertical depth of over 19 football fields. Gold ore was extracted from the mine and then crushed under large and heavy mining stamps. The stamps crushed the ore and separated the gold from the quartz rock.

The gold was captured and the remaining rock or tailings were remained as leftover rubble. The Kennedy Mine operated 100 stamps, all operating 24 hours a day. Each operated with a load booming sound and mine operators often lost their hearing from the excessive noise. All was going well for the Kennedy Mine until 1911 and a 20 inch rain season brought unplanned consequences. The leftover rubble from the large stamps washed down to the valley below the Kennedy Mine causing problems for downstream agriculture interests.

A lawsuit was filed against

the mine, and the courts ruled in favor of the farmer owners and the environment. In order to comply with the court order, Kennedy engineers designed a wheel based solution to move the tailings up and down hills and finally to a waste basin to further begin the eradication process. Four wheels were used to move the tailings through the system.

Each was built of cedar and redwood, stood 58 feet high and weighed over 800 pounds.

The wheels allowed the tailings to be lifted 42 feet up and then move through a series of flumes filled with water. The last wheel dumped over 850 tons of waste each day into the waste basin. Today, three of the four wheels are still intact and efforts are being undertaken to preserve them from the elements. The environmental damage caused by the Kennedy mining process caused one of the first successful environmental protection projects to be completed.

The Kennedy Tailing Wheel project initiated to preserve the remains of that significant project is truly a project with an engineering and environmental impact.

The DMZ is the No Man's Land between a divided Korea. A thriving South Korea, with her capital at Seoul, and the communist nation of

Soon I would be visiting two of them, China and Vietnam, but in Korea I had to settle with viewing North Korea from a distance.

The recent history of Korea is this. Japan controlled Korea during World War II. At the conclusion of World War II, Russian forces (our ally at the time) occupied the northern half of Korea and American forces occupied the southern half.

Competing governments were set up, a communist one in the north and a republic in the south.

Funny how the NFL not only has its regular season, its playoff season, its Super Bowl... but draft season, and the NFL Draft itself is one of the best sports days of the year.

“Tebow doesn't drink, so he never got a chance to read the bar napkin the Jets' offense was scribbled on.”---Funny Washington Post comment on the New York Jets releasing of quarterback Tim Tebow.

I’m a Tebow fan, but he’s not built for the CFL. He’s built for the NFL and has a second round playoff appearance to back it up.

Wasn’t he going to be released before we got to spring training this season?

Did West Virginia’s Geno Smith seemingly get shafted?

Yes. Did he show a lot of guts and character by sticking around for the second day of the draft? Yes. Should he be the Jets starting quarterback by Week Eight 8? Yes. So did all that transpired around him work for his benefit in the end? Yes. Go Geno!

When Jay Mohr broke in doing comedy he was edgy, he was funny, he was different.

Since he’s become a sports talk show host, he’s turned into the most common, ordinary, least inspiring voice on radio.

Why? Because this edgy, out there personality, has become a major suck up without one independent thought.

Next Add Dodgers: If the Dodgers end up winning the World Series this season (with this current cast), then doesn’t the trade of James Loney, Ivan DeJesus, Allen Webster, and Rubby De La Rosa to Boston for Crawford, Adrian Gonzalez, Josh Beckett, Nick Punto become one of the greatest in MLB history?

The Peterson Principal

I know what they're saying. He doesn't have the arm strength. He isn't mobile enough. He didn't lead the Trojans to enough victories.

But I still maintain they missed it with Matt Barkley.

He's not a fourth round pick. If he went in the middle of the second round or even early in the third I could buy it. But fourth round? For a guy that started for four years at a major university? It doesn't make any sense. And E.J Manuel is the best quarterback in the draft? Really? He's got the size and the mobility but his accuracy has always been a question. Don't you need to hit your targets as a quarterback? Geno Smith should have been the first quarterback taken. Manuel was a reach.

Besides arm strength is sometimes overrated. How many NFL quarterbacks are required to throw the ball down the field 60 yards on every play? Those calls are few and far between.

Barkley can make all the necessary throws to play in the NFL. The other puzzling thing about the pick though is that it was the Eagles that drafted him. Apparently Chip Kelly isn't completely committed to running the same offense he did at Oregon.

Barkley will be fine. One thing film and camps and pro days don't take into consideration is heart. And Barkley has plenty of that.

When Ryan Nassib's college coach passed on him the red flags immediately went up. Doug Marrone, now the coach at Buffalo, and who coached Nassib at Syracuse, sent Nassib spiraling down to the fourth round when he took Manuel in the first round. I'm sure their next conversation will be a little awkward.

Good to see UCLA's Datone Jones go in the first round. Nice pick up for Green Bay. The Packers were partial to the powder blue and gold in the draft as they also selected running back Jonathan Franklin in the fourth round.

In regards to Smith he was wise to stick around for the second round. Leaving early and pouting would have been a PR disaster.

Smith was a nice pick for the Jets in round two and it was a definite message to Mark Sanchez.

Jon Gruden's rant on Miami's selection of Oregon's Dion Jordan with the third pick in the draft was classic.

Gruden definitely showed his “Chucky” side when he questioned Jordan's athleticism, called him one dimensional and said his speed would be easy to defend in the NFL. If you didn't know anything about Jordan you felt you did after listening to Gruden. Yeah, he made me believe the Dolphins biffed on that one.

It would be hard to argue that the Vikings didn't get the best of the draft- or at least the first round. They picked up Florida DT Sharrif Floyd at 23, who some had slated in the top five, then they got Florida State CB Xavier Rhodes at 25 and Tennessee WR Cordarrelle Patterson at 29, both great athletes.

On the bright side for Marrone and Buffalo is that the Bills did get a quality receiver in the second round with USC's Robert Woods.

Regardless of Manti Teo's girlfriend, or lack thereof, Teo was a legitimate second round pick. He disappeared against Alabama in the National Championship game and that was the biggest factor in Teo dropping out of the first round.

Still trying to figure out why Dallas drafted Wisconsin center Travis Frederick, a fourth round pick on everybody's board, in the first round. Is Jerry Jones turning into Al Davis?

No I don't think the NFL Draft is overrated. It's much more compelling than the NBA playoffs.

Speaking of the NBA, does it seem like there's a lot more wrong with the Lakers than just injuries?

Do You Know Who This Guy Is? On this date, May 1, 1937 the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Brooklyn Dodgers 4-2 at Ebbets Field.

Going one for four at third base that day for the Dodgers was El Monte (Class of 1928) alum Tony Malinosky.

The hit was his first in his only Major League season after being called up the week before.

Malinosky, who spent the next month as a regular at third, would finish the season with a .228 average and 3 Rbis in 79 at-bats. In July he would be farmed out to the American Association Rochester Royals where he would be a teammate with

future Dodger Hall of Fame manager Walter Alston. A knee injury would short circuit a return to the Majors.

He would play for four

different teams (Sacramento, Houston, Columbus, Rochester) in 1938 and then retire.

He would serve in the army during World War II and see action in the Battle of Bulge (December 16, 1944 to Janu-

ary 25, 1945).

At the time of his death on February 8, 2011 he was the oldest living Major League Baseball player. He was 101 years old when he passed.

As a Dodger he made $100.00 a week.

“In my opinion the modern day ball player is over paid,” said Malinosky in 2009 interview with KCLU Radio in Ventura. “What the hell do they do with all that money?”

Note: The day Malinosky got his first hit long time Chicago Cub second baseman Woody English was playing second base for the Dodgers. English was a very prominent member of former MLB players who hung out at Santa Anita Race Track in the 1980s. Notables in that group included Bill Singer and Dick Allen.

Kranz’s video captured the attention of the contest judges and the school was one of five schools selected and the only middle school chosen to attend the 4th Annual Lakers Fit For Life Health Fair in El Segundo. Sponsored by the Lakers, the Fit for Life Contest was created to educate the community about the importance of physical fitness and nutrition in an effort to help fight childhood obesity and encourage all Laker fans to be fit for life.

Kranz’s efforts were led

by physical education teacher, Chad Greene, along with his colleague, Chris Cornell and a few Kranz students who met during lunch and after school to brainstorm and shoot the video. The group came up with the top ten reasons why Kranz is Fit for Life including the school’s P.E. program, the Students Run the L.A. Marathon (SRLA) program, the girls softball league, the Cougar Band, after school sports, Soccer for Success, lunch time sports, and nutrition activities and Harvest of the Month curriculum.

The winning video entry allowed Kranz to take 50 students and four chaperones to the Fit For Life event.

The day at the outdoor training facility began with each student receiving a Fit For Life with the Los Angeles Lakers t-shirt and a healthy lunch. After fueling their bodies, the students fueled their minds by hearing a presenta-

tion from celebrity Chef Marsh Mokhtari.

Today the North Korean Army and the ROK Army are two of the largest in the world and they are constantly facing each other.

Besides visiting the DMZ I also visited Tunnel #3.

Tunnel #3 is a huge tunnel dug by the North Koreans to invade South Korea which was discovered by the South Koreans. Four such tunnels have been discovered so far.

This long stalemate has given the DMZ almost a surreal like feel. On the South Korean side of the DMZ you find all sorts of businesses flourishing. They even had an amusement park nearby.

The threat is real, but after all these years the South Koreans live their lives as normally as they can --- fully knowing that on any given day things may change rapidly for the worst.

Korea was an interesting place, but my ship was now sailing to Shanghai in China.

Temple City Tweets: The Rosemead Boulevard Enhancement Project is well underway. It is a streetscape redesign effort by the City of Temple City, dedicated to improving traffic safety, reenergizing one of the city’s main commercial corridors and creating a vibrant community destination.

Through physical improvements and beautification elements like new sidewalks, added canopy trees and public art; as well as incoming amenities like outdoor dining and bike lanes, this Project is set to transform the two-mile stretch of Rosemead Boulevard within Temple City from an auto-oriented pass-through thoroughfare, into an attractive place for community life.

I am sure there are many inconveniences to residents and businesses but the beautification project will be worth the effort when completed.

Today I am very proud to be here to celebrate the past 20 years and I look forward with anticipation to many more years of academic success for Madrid students,” McEntire added.

An original member of the class of 1993 was on hand for the celebration and raved about her years at Madrid.

“My middle school years here at Madrid were so much fun!” said Isabel Sauceda, former student. “The teachers were great and we had a lot of activities we could participate in. I have many great memories of my time as a Bulldog.”
