Internal Organs Inducted into Hall of Fame

Putting a musical twist on the study of internal organs, fifth graders at Parkview School presented the science musical – The Internal Organ Hall of Fame. Under the guidance of teacher, Ramona Chandler, the students spent two months studying the human body leading up to the musical performance.

“Over the past two months we’ve been reading about the human body in science and writing about the internal organs like the heart, lungs and stomach,” said Chandler. “The musical complements our studies greatly and aligns with the science standards, plus the students had a great time doing it.”

While presenting a comprehensive look at the internal organs and their functions, the musical was entertaining and funny.

Students portrayed the brain, lungs, heart, arteries, and intestines and there was even a raging hormone. Each body

Five Temple City High School students were recognized at the Los Angeles County Career and Technical Education (CTE) Student Recognition Award competition on March 10, 2015 in Irwindale.

by Mavis Hansen Another busy week for club members and volunteers with activities for all interested in the many community activities provided began on Monday April 20, 2015 when DVAC (Domestic Violence Action Coalition) met for their regular monthly meeting at the Covina Woman’s Club, 128 San Jose Avenue, Covina.

The meetings are conducted

by Co-Directors Kim Plater and Alice Slaughter and attended by many organizations such as YWCA Wings, House of Ruth, Crossroads and Project Sister who provide services to women and children needing help because of issues such as domestic violence and also attended by legislative representatives and community volunteers. Many DVAC members participated and gave their support to “Denim Day” held on Wednesday, April 22, 2015 at the Pomona Civic Center.

The next meeting of DVAC will be on Monday, May 18, 2015 at the Covina Woman’s Club when donations of items needed by women and children will be presented to the various organizations.

A very special day will be celebrated by the many members and clubs on Friday, April 24, 2015 as the General Federation of Women’s Clubs celebrates 125 years of community service.

GFWC’s accomplishments are many and as long as the members continue to do lifechanging work in their communities, around the country and the world, that list will continue to grow. California boasts of four Districts with 261 clubs and nearly twelve thousand members. The San Gabriel Valley District has 26 clubs and close to 1200 members. Membership is open to those interested in community service and who will support the Mission and Goals of the Federation.

The California Federation of Women’s Clubs is: An organization of members located in cities throughout California. The El Monte Historical Society held their Quarterly Tea on Sunday, April 26, 2015 at the El Monte Historical Museum. In commemoration of the 150th Anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg, the program was presented by Patrick L. Barnes, who with maps, historic postcards and award winning needlework, explained what led up to, and what took place during the historic battle that lead up to the famous Gettysburg Address given by President Lincoln, on November 19, 1863.

Community Church of El Monte located at 4602 N. Peck Road in El Monte is preparing wonderful music for Mother’s Day on May 10th and for Pentecost/ Memorial Day on May 24th. For Mother’s Day, the choir will be performing an anthem, “Love is a Special Thing” which will include the children and their mothers. After the performance, the children will present flowers to their mothers.

Rev. Douglas Edwards will be the presiding pastor for this service.

For Pentecost, there will be exciting music appropriate for the occasion. “Spirit of the Living God” and “Go Ye Into All the World” will be performed. The Rev. Don Maddox will be the guest pastor for this service. Since Pentecost is the birth of the church, we will celebrate with a birthday cake following the service and there

As the first public event for new Pasadena mayor Terry Tornek, the 42nd annual Pasadena Mayor’s Interfaith Prayer Breakfast will be Tornek’s first proof

of leadership in bringing the city together.

Or so say community insiders about the May 7 event. The deadline to buy tickets is Sun., May 3. Only tickets purchased in advance will be taken at the event.

No walk-ups will be allowed.

“It’s an opportunity for Mayor Tornek to share his commitment to bringing us together as a city,” said Denise Campbell(cq), chairwoman of the interfaith-breakfast committee of Friends in Deed, the Pasadena nonprofit that is hosting the annual event. “And it’s a chance for the mayor to talk about how he will work to lead our community in the spirit of unity.”

Tickets to the breakfast

are $35 per person, while sponsorships and Table Sponsors range from $750 to $1,500.Friends in Deed— a 121-year-old interfaith collaborative--helps financially struggling San Gabriel Valley residents with the Women’s Room, a daytime shelter; the Food Pantry; a bad-weather shelter and other social-service programs.

Tornek is the first new mayor in 16 years, and only the second directly elected mayor in city history.

The prayer breakfast, which will be held at the Pasadena Convention Center, is part of a national web of mayors’ breakfasts-held on or around National Prayer Day, May 7—which have helped heal racial, re-

ligious and other divides in our country since 1973.

‘Time Jockey’ Post Watergate

After Nixon …. On August 1, 1974, President Richard Nixon had reached his limit on the heat he was taking for the Watergate break-in. He decided early that morning that he would be resigning and the battle he had fought with Congress for the previous 15 months was about to end.

Special prosecutor Leon Jaworski had requested the Supreme Court to direct President Nixon to release the final 64 tapes of conversations recorded in the Oval Office, conversations which would point cover-up of the Watergate break-in to him.

Nixon’s primary confidante was General Alexander Haig, a 49-year old Army General who had directed the President’s wishes since Congress began its investigation months before. Haig was summoned into the Oval office on the morning of August 1st, and was told by the President what was going to happen in the next day or two. Nixon ordered Haig to inform Vice President Gerald Ford to be ready to take over the Presidency but to provide no further information and to keep it a secret. Ford had never run for national office and was appointed as Vice President in 1973 when Spiro Agnew was forced to resign due to financial difficulties. According to the 25th Amendment of the Constitution, a new Vice President needed to be appointed by the President and approved by Congress.

Nixon nominated Ford who had served for 25 years in the House of Representative, and now after 8 months he was in a position to be named the next President of the United States.

Haig met with Ford in his office just before 9AM but Ford was holding a meeting with a newspaper columnist and Haig did not want to speak in front of him.

He told Ford only about the additional tapes which Jaworski had ordered. Haig left without informing the Vice President of Nixon’s decision but scheduled another meeting for later in the day. At approximately 3:30PM, Haig met again with Vice President Ford, this time they were both alone. Haig informed the Vice President of the President’s decision. Ford was stunned but he said he was prepared to assume the job. Haig asked Ford for

his thoughts on what plan of action he would take and Ford asked for President Nixon’s opinion. Haig responded the President had offered no opinion and Vice President Ford had no plans of action as well. Haig then listed six options that the White House lawyers had come up with. Nixon could temporarily step aside from the Presidency according to the 25th Amendment and then wait and delay the impeachment process. There were three pardon options including Nixon pardoning himself and then resigning, Nixon pardoning his aides and then resigning, and finally the new President could pardon Nixon. Haig offered no recommendations and gave Ford a legal document which explained the powers of the President regarding pardons. On Friday August 9th, Nixon resigned and Ford was sworn in as President. For nearly a month, Ford contemplated how to handle Nixon, and sent an aide out to California to visit him.

The aide returned and said Nixon looked tired and depressed, he was afraid for his well-being. Ford decided to offer a pardon to Nixon but Nixon would have to admit guilt in order to accept the pardon. Eventually, Nixon agreed to the conditions of the pardon, and on September 8th, President Ford pardoned former President Richard Nixon. Ford, Nixon and Haig all contended that no agreement was made prior to Nixon’s resignation.

Ford based his decision on healing the county but the Nixon pardon was costly as he lost re-election in 1976.

San Gabriel Mission High School’s Lauren Peters Signed with Concordia College

The Athletic Department at San Gabriel Mission High School would like to announce that on April 23rd Senior Lauren Peters signed with Concordia College to play college volleyball.

Lauren made her announcement surrounded by faculty, coaches, family, teammates, friends and well-wishers.

In talking with Lauren, she credits her coaches for her achievement. She cited a poem (author unknown) that expresses how she feels: “For a coach who saw more in me, more than I thought I could ever be, who taught me to discipline this mind and the body I am

in, who raised expectations and dreams, beyond just an athlete’s schemes, beyond normal endurance, beyond myself, and ever since, I am a greater woman for it, because you taught me not to quit.”

Lauren continued by saying, “I would like to thank all of my coaches, especially Coach Ivan, for believing in me, even when I continually doubted myself. It was their words of encouragement that have helped me get to this point in my athletic career.

I am very ecstatic and a bit nervous to attend Concordia, but I am ready for the challenge.”

Lauren is a 2 Time All CIF, 2 Time All League Most Valuable Player and is listed in Southern California as Top 50 in the Blocks category.

Lauren had full scholarship offers from: Alcorn State University in Mississippi, Division 1; Daemen College in New York, Division 2; and Concordia College New York, Division 2.

“This is a very exciting time for Mission High School,” according to Betty Ann Overley, Vice Principal and Athletic Director at SGMHS.

Students will receive their bronze medals and certificates at the TCHS Senior Awards ceremony in May. TCHS Career and Technical Education teachers nominate students that have gone above and beyond in class. TCHS staff members, Debbie Singh and Cary Smith, work with students from January through March to prepare them for the competition. Students meet individually and in groups, are instructed how to best articulate their responses

during the interview, and participate in an on-campus panel interview.

TCHS is allowed to send six representatives to the district competition. At the competition, students are interviewed by a panel of judges and also present a project from their respective CTE courses. The interview allows the student to highlight their CTE course and the impact that it has made on them, their postsecondary plans, and career plans. Students are also required to submit a professional resume and complete a job application.

Long time area assistant coach Matt Lopez has joined the staff at Buena Park as wide receivers coach. Lopez has previously had stints at San Gabriel, Temple City and most recently San Dimas.

“I’m excited to announce I will be heading to the OC and joining the Buena Park program,” Lopez posted on his Face-

book page.

Lopez, the father of two, played his high school football at Temple City under Mike Mooney.

Buena Park has had several coaching staff changes so far this off season. Long time Arcadia assistant Eric Elias landed at Buena Park in February to work for head coach Anthony White.

The Peterson Principle

I said last week that I'm not into the NBA playoffs and I'm really not...at least not until the Finals in June.

But I have to admit the Golden State Warriors are fun to watch.

Stephen Curry alone is worth tuning in for a while.

If he's not the MVP of the league then I'm not sure I understand the meaning of the word.

What comes first? Tim Duncan's retirement or his admission as a member into the AARP? I don't think the Clippers problem is that they aren't mentally tough as Magic Johnson suggested the other day. It's just that it's... well...it's the Clippers.

With the Clippers things just happen.

Danny Manning's knee injury happens. The Byron Scott trade for Norm Nixon happens. Drafting Michael Olowkandi happens. Benoit Benjamin happens. Donald Sterling happens. The Clippers happen. And they will continue to happen until the team finally wins a title. **I understand Arte Moreno's frustration with Josh Hamilton. I don't understand why the Angels are required to pay him and he avoids suspension because he came forward about his relapse. Doesn't this set a precedent for future cases?

Basically it's ok if you relapse as long as you admit to it? Seems like it will open a huge can of unwanted worms.

The concerns about Brandon McCarthy were whether or not he could pitch a full season. But I'm sure the Dodgers thought he would make it through April. The Dodgers may have the highest payroll in baseball but with McCarthy now having elbow problems and HyunJin Ryu already out with inflammation of the shoulder they also have starting pitching issues. Sunday they had to start Scott Baker.

Scott who? Exactly. **The only professional football team in Southern California is struggling.

With a 68-30 loss to Arizona on Saturday night the LA KISS fell to 0-5. However despite their woes they may have the best receiver in the Arena Football League in Donovan “Captain” Morgan. The catch that he made against Arizona is now on You Tube and being compared to Odell Beckham, Jr's TD grab last year. The pass looked like it was going to be intercepted when Morgan suddenly reached behind his body with one hand, pulled it in and was off to the races for a touchdown.

And I can guarantee the beers aren't $14.00. **Word out of Rosemead, and all points in between, is that head coach Marc Paramo is going to be calling his own plays now that former OC Pat Ahhing is no longer on staff. It could work. It's been done plenty of times before. There are numerous area head coaches that call either their own offense or defense. But it does give the HC, whose plate is already full, one more thing to worry about. It does make it easier though when you have a quarterback like Steven Nava.

Rio Hondo Prep's Big Unit

Standing 6-foot-9-inches tall atop a mound raised 10-inches above home plate makes opposing batters more than uncomfortable when they face Rio Hondo Prep’s junior left-hander Sampson Sly-Hoar.

“It’s almost like you’re hitting out of a hole in the batter’s box,” said RHP Head Coach Todd Carson. The 2015 season is Sly-Hoar’s first full season on varsity and he has impressed. He is 7-2 and has posted a 0.91 ERA in 46 innings pitched with 74 strikeouts and 17 walks. Opponents are batting a paltry .147 against him.

“Those two losses bothered me. Our seniors like Eric Mosher, Gabe Shriver, RJ Chang and Steve Martin have worked so hard and are such great teammates I don’t like letting them down,” said SlyHoar. Rio’s senior catcher Gabe Shriver, who is also the Kares’ leading hitter, has caught almost every inning for Sly-Hoar and provides a unique perspective on his talents.

“He’s able to hit spots, and mix up his pitches,” Shriver said. “We like to keep hitters off balance, and Sam is able to do that by throwing whatever I call.” Sly-Hoar only started pitching in the summer of 2013, and burst onto the scene a year ago when he pitched six shutout innings against Pasadena Poly in his

“Sam still has a lot of maturing to do both physically and as a pitcher, he has a really high ceiling,” Carson said. “He probably won’t be fully developed until college.”

Sly-Hoar’s fastball tops out in the mid-70’s, which according to Carson is a good thing for him long term. “He’s had to learn how to pitch and get people out with different pitches - not just overpower people,” said Carson. “He throws a nice breaking ball and change

up, is working on a splitter, and his fastball is only going to get better as his career progresses.”

Where that career takes him is a long way from being decided, but if Sly-Hoar had his choice he’d stay on the west coast. “I’d prefer to stay in California or go to school in the northwest, but I’m open to going anywhere,” said Sly-Hoar. The Kares are 10-3 and in the midst of their league schedule with an eye on a Division 6 CIF playoff birth.

Hollywood U2 Shakes and Stirs AXS TV

One of music's now legendary bands is the phenomenally successful Irish rockers known as U2. Lead by guitarist David Howell Evans otherwise known by his stage name “The Edge” and front man Paul David Hewson, known by his stage name “Bono,” the band formed in Dublin way back in 1976 with a postpunk rock sound. The band successfully incorporated a more popular musical style that would eventually propel the band into worldwide stardom.

The tribute band Hollywood U2 has managed to encapsulate, replicate and electrify the elements of the original band into an

amazingly faithful tribute to those Irish rockers that is enveloping and incredibly wild in every way imaginable. They are in fact so good, AXS TV and its producer/host Katie Daryl invited the band to appear on their television show World's Greatest Tribute bands on two separate occasions, which is a first in the show's 5 season history. Hollywood U2 lived up to that honor last Tuesday night. The legendary club, Whisky A Go Go on the Sunset Strip exploded with energy as the band rocked through U2's classic catalog, even going so far as to include the lovely Anne-Marie Smith in

recreating the belly dancer moments from the U2 video “She Moves in Mysterious Ways,” which could very well have been the highlight of the show. With Stevie Adams as “The Edge” and Joe Heir as “Bono,” Mikhail Davies on bass & Roy Murray on drums Hollywood U2 brings along all the vitality, craftsmanship and style of everything that is best about U2.

Beatles Love

The Beatles Love Cirque Du Soleil is a theatrical production combining Beatles music with circus based dancing and acrobatics. “Love” started in June 2006 and has had many performances and it’s close to reaching its one-year anniversary. Ringo, Paul, Harrisons wife, and Yoko attended the grand opening which received great positive feedback. The stage itself is a state of the art stage that has 3 speakers on

the chair for each person meaning they have over 6,341 speakers. The show is about the Beatles obviously and during the formation and breakup of the Beatles featuring many of there hit songs including Help, Lucy in the Sky, Hey Jude, Lady Madonna, and Revolution.

Never being in a Cirque Du Soleil I didn’t know what to expect and what I saw did impress me. I felt though that it wasn’t meeting my full expectations. The

performance at some point did remind me of street performers. I guess that’s where they can expect to make it to Cirque Du Soleil fame. The technology what made this show to me a lot more interesting and it’s the combination that makes it interesting. With out the tech its just a circus but together it’s special and make it themed by the Beatles we have a great show. Favorite part of the whole thing was Lucy in the sky, when they turned the arena into a space area full of stars. If you haven’t seen it I suggest you go check it out.
