Parkviewâs transitional kindergarten through 6th grade students, decked out in red, white and blue clothing, hats and accessories, enthusiastically waved American Flags and signs as they marched by classroom down the street. Each class chose a president to research and study and created banners and decorations related to their chosen president. Patriotic songs and cheers for the U.S.A. could be heard loudly as they marched down the parade route lined with hundreds of community members and students from surrounding schools. âThe parade is an extraordinary and beautiful event,â said David Siegrist, from the El Monte American Legion Post 261. âItâs gotten so much bigger over the years and is a wonderful community event,â he added.

San Gabriel Mission High School Senior Named Tulane Posse Scholar by Staff Writer San Gabriel
San Gabriel Mission High School is proud to announce that senior, Claire Cruz, has been named a Tulane Posse Scholar. There were over 2,500 nominations from Los Angeles alone, and only 110 were chosen as scholars. The Posse Foundation started in 1989 when a student dropped out of college and claimed that, âI never would have dropped out of college if I had my posse with me.â According to Posseâs website, âthat simple idea of sending a group of students to college together to act as a support system for one another was the impetus for a program that today has become one of the most comprehensive college access programs in the United States.â The Posse Foundation âpartners with 51 partner colleges and universities and by 2020 expects to be in 10 cities,
collaborate with 100 college and university partners, serve 5,000 Posse Scholars programmatically each years, and count 6,000 Posse alumni in the workforce.â The application and nomination process started in August of 2014. To select the scholars, there was a process called the Dynamic Assessment Process (DAP), involving 3 rounds of interviews over the span of 5 months. Claire was notified in December that she was a Posse Scholarship winner. According to Claire, âI chose Tulane University, a private, 4-year research institution located in New Orleans, Louisiana.â I asked her what challenges she may face. Claire said, âIn New Orleans, I face the challenge of adjusting to being a minority both as a Latina woman and a liberal Democrat from California.â Claire
