Christmas Around the World

Christmas is celebrated all over the world and has a variety of names and traditions that are very special during this holiday season. Here I have named just a few. Hanukkah is the “Jewish Feast of Lights” or “Feast of Dedication” This holiday begins on the eve of the 25th day of the Hebrew month of Kislev, lasts 8 days and usually falls

Then, we have Kwanzaa, which is an African-American holiday that lasts for 7 days, beginning December 26th and ending January 1st.

At Kwanzaa time, AfricanAmericans think about their people, their struggles and their future.

In Mexico, Christmas is called “Navidad.” The main celebration is “posadas” which means “inn.” And for 9 nights friends gather for a parade, carrying small figures of baby Jesus, Mary and Joseph. They re-enact the scene at Bethlehem.

Ending on Christmas Eve, the figure of baby Jesus is placed in the manger and everyone sings songs and says prayers, while bells ring. A big party takes place and then everyone goes to church. In addition, Christmas in Iran today is called “Little Feast.” They begin to fast on December 1st, eating no meat or diary. This is “considered a time for peace and prayer.” The Little Feast begins after church on December 25th, where special foods are prepared and served.

Then, the “trees of light” are what Christmas trees are called in China. The Christians decorate their homes with “beautiful paper lanterns and decorate their trees with paper chains, paper flowers and paper lanterns.”

And, when Santa comes to visit, he is called “Dun Che Lao Ren.” In Sweden, the holiday festivities begin on December 13th. This is St. Lucia Day. On this day, they celebrate the “Festival of Light.” Then on Christmas Eve, families have special dinners and open their gifts.

On Christmas Day everyone goes to church and then rests.

In Italy, the Italians celebrate “Natale.” No matter what part of Italy you are from, Christmas is the time to spend with your family. Wonderful dishes are always prepared while tables overflow for this grand feast.

Traditional menu dishes may include lasagna, sausages and eggplant. Special bread known as “panettone” is served as well as wonderful desserts like the nougat candy known as “torrone” and pastry shells filled with

creamy ricotta called “cannoli.” On Christmas Eve in France, children “put their shoes in front of the fireplace” in hope that “Pere Noel” (Father Christmas) will fill them with presents.

And, in Germany they make special spicy cakes called “Lebkuchen” and place them on their Christmas trees as ornaments, while in Austria and New Zealand Christmas comes in the summertime.

Whatever your traditions may be this holiday season, the most precious gift we have is to spend time with family and friends.

No matter where you live, remember our soldiers and those who have lost homes to fires and floods. May your holidays be merry and may the New Year bring health, peace and happiness to us all. HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

In a world of confusion throughout the holidays, there was a calming of the storm when the communities of El Monte and South El Monte met to share the blessings of giving back. At the Grace Black Auditorium on December 11, 2013, the El Monte community came together to give to those that were less fortunate as they donated many teddy bears, and toys of all kinds.

The Emergency Resources Association appreciated the support, as they continue this wonderful tradition.

Beautiful Christmas trees were on display along with the wonderful choir from Mountain View High School, who entertained us all.

Up with East SGV Coalition to Provide Winter Shelter for the Homeless

Tuesday, December 31 Torchlight Parade: Ring in the New Year, Snow Summit-style! Every year, the mountain is lit up when over 200 Snow Summit staff and employees make their

way down the mountain by ski and snowboard, each carrying a torch. The mountain is illuminated against the night sky, and can be seen near and far. This parade is truly one-of-a-kind!

Each year, as winter approaches and temperatures drop, people experiencing homelessness have a much higher risk of developing exposure-related conditions such as hypothermia and frostbite than the general population.

In an effort to help our homeless or near-homeless neighbors, the City of El Monte has partnered with the East San Gabriel Valley Coalition for the Homeless, and a variety of other public agencies, private organizations, foundations, and ecumenical groups in the community to provide the Winter Shelter Program for the homeless.

The program will operate continuously until March 2, 2014 – providing shelter from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. every night. Shelter locations in the San Gabriel Valley include West Covina, Glendora, Hacienda Heights, Valinda, and Rowland Heights.

At the shelter clients will

be provided food, clothing, hygiene kits, soap and towels for the showers.

Transportation to the shelters is available. Two daily bus pick-ups are scheduled in El Monte from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m, with a third in Baldwin Park. Book Review Local Historian Publishes Book

Long-time San Gabriel resident, Mr. Richard J. Arnold is now part of “Arcadia Publishing’s popular Images of America series.” His book is entitled San Gabriel. It took 3 years to complete this project. Why did he write the book? According to Mr. Arnold, he inherited his love of California history, cars

and photographs from his dad.

Mr. Arnold is a retired San Gabriel Police Department Captain. He served in the San Gabriel Police Department for 33 years.

Mr. Arnold is a graduate of Cal-State, Los Angeles and has spent the last 30 years researching his book. “He enjoys the investigative

process of researching and has spent many enjoyable hours researching the vast collection of rare books and photographs at the Huntington Library.” Some of the other resources were: the California State Library, Los Angeles Public Library, the USC Digital Library as well as the San Gabriel Historical Association.

Will his book leave a lasting legacy?

According to Mr. Arnold, “San Gabriel only touched the surface of the history of this community but hopefully it provides a good foundation for those folk that want to do more research on the community by reading further.”

He said about San Gabriel, in the words of his favorite author, Mr. David McCullough, “It’s what you feel about it, this work you’ve done; this offering you’ve

made, and whether or not it’s going to stay in print and whether it’s going to stand the test of time.”

I found the book fascinating, especially the vintage photographs of the San Gabriel Mission and the surrounding land. The changes from the past to the present are surreal.

The historical information presented is invaluable and

gives readers some fascinating facts. Local residents can learn about the rich history of their city and actually see

the past through these wonderfully chosen photographs.

“a professional quality singing organization comprised of amateur performers.”

While they may be classified as amateurs, they are quite a

Pasadena Crown City Chorus: Christmas Barbershop Style

On December 14th, I had the pleasure of attending the Christmas show of the Pasadena Crown City Chorus, including the barbershop quartet, Impact. It was a wonderful performance with guest ladies quartet, Hot Topic. It was a great way to get into the holiday spirit.

The Pasadena Crown City Chorus is a group of talented men who meet every Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. at the Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1757 North Lake Avenue in Pasadena. The Pasadena Crown City Chorus was formed in December of 1946. They belong to the Far Western District of the Barbershop Harmony Society, singing 4-part harmony.

And, each year the chorus competes nationally in barbershop chorus contests. In watching John Minsker, the Musical Director with the group, he really knows how to produce the showmanship and styles needed to win competitions.

Arroyo Student Elected to WEBB'S RULES Serve With Board of Trustees

Arroyo High School student Courtney Nguyen has been elected by the El Monte Union High School District Student Advisory Council as the first student trustee to serve with the District’s Board of Trustees.

The Board believes “that engaging the student body and seeking its input and feedback regarding the District’s educational programs and activities are vital to achieving the District’s mission of educating District students.”

Nguyen, a member of the District’s Student Advisory Council, was selected by a vote of fellow Council members. After delivering a prepared speech, each candidate then provided a written statement and answered questions from

other Council members.

Each school site has four student representatives (one for each grade level) on the Council, with the exception of Ledesma High School, which has two.

As student trustee, Nguyen is seated with other Board members, is recognized at Board meetings as a full member, receives all Board materials, with the exception of closed session items, and can participate in discussing issues. She may make motions that may be acted upon by the Board, except on matters dealing with employer-employee relations. While the student trustee is given an advisory vote, the vote shall not be included in determining the vote required to carry any

measure before the Board.

Nguyen hopes to fulfill the board’s vision of student trustee and “do a good job of what they have in mind.”

“I know it’s difficult, but I hope I can serve the other schools as if they were my own,” she added.”

“I am very excited about working with the Student Advisory Council and our new student trustee, Courtney Nguyen, who represents them,” said Superintendent Nick Salerno.

“I am impressed with the caliber and enthusiasm of the students who are serving on the Council and their willingness and passion to help improve our school district and community.”

Christmas is a wonderful annual event; It’s a good time to be grateful and repent.

For it’s a special time to honor Jesus’s birth; And for us to reflect, why we are here on earth.

Many things we do at Christmas without any fear; We should be doing throughout the entire year.

Everyday we need to love Jesus for he’s our guide; And our feelings for him, we should never hide.

Santa Claus only appears at Christmas each year; And just as quickly, Santa will disappear.

But through Santa, we’ve learned the joy of giving; Which I truthfully feel is the secret to living.

We certainly don’t need all the material things; Just giving love and sharing is what happiness brings.

To all of God’s children, let’s us be considerate and kind; While holding fast the love of Jesus in our mind.

So everyday let’s help people and love each other; Regardless of their faith, race or their color.

All of God’s children are our sisters and brothers; With unconditional love we can love one another.

The December EMCSD Board of Education meeting was full of emotional farewells and warm welcomes.

The packed house included prestigious local city politicians and school board members from surrounding school districts.

• The Board said to goodbye to board member Mike Barrios. Mr. Barrio’s wife, daughter and new grandson were attendance. Mr. Barrios was presented with a plaque and each board member spoke fondly of the leadership Mr. Barrios showed through 14 years of service.

He will be missed.

• The Board welcomed newly elected member, Jessica Ancona. Mrs. Ancona’s family proudly watched her being sworn in by El Monte Councilwoman, Vicky Martinez. Mrs. Ancona took her seat on the Board with a shiny new name placard in front of her.

• Roberto “Bob” Cruz and Elizabeth Rivas were also sworn in with their families acknowledged among the large crowd.

by Joe Castillo were selling burgers based on each order. The average serving time was reduced from 20 minutes to 30 seconds. Sales jumped 40% in three short years, and the increase in business caught Ray Kroc’s eye. Kroc had begun his career in sales, starting with paper cups.

He changed products and began selling ‘multi-mixers’ which were used to make malts. The ‘multi-mixers’ could mix three malts at once whereas the older mixing machines could only make one malt at a time.

Kroc made contact with the McDonald brothers and got them to order more ‘multimixers’ for their stores and eventually negotiated a contract. Kroc eventually made an offer to the McDonald brothers and in time McDonald’s grew into a worldwide operation. The success of McDonald’s No. 3 was a contributing factor in the expansion of the McDonald Restaurant franchise….

Jolly Saint Nick recently brought holiday cheer and gifts to El Monte children as the City’s Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department hosted its annual Santa at the Park event on December 10, 11 and 17.

Every year this event draws in crowds of hundreds of children anxiously awaiting their turn to visit with Santa.

This year’s event drew in over 3,000 participants as many families lined up early for the opportunity to visit Santa Claus. Mr. Claus made an appearance at the Gibson Mariposa Park, Mt. View Park and Zamora Park.

The department was able to provide every child with a gift thanks in part to the generous donations from city employees, fundraising efforts, caring friends of the parks and community members. All funds raised or donated are utilized to purchase balls and stuffed

animals for all children wishing to visit with Santa Claus.

The event was held in conjunction with the City’s popular Santa Float, sponsored by the City’s Santa Float Committee/Public Works Department. Joining Santa were El Monte High School Song “Elves,” the El Monte Community Choir and many community and

city employee volunteers on the holiday trolley.

This magical event brings joy and holiday cheer to many as children’s faces light up with joy. The Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department would like to thank all supporters, volunteers and all participants for helping to make this event spectacular!

Fast Food Growth .….

World-known McDonald’ Restaurants got its initial start right here in Southern California. As a matter of fact, the oldest existing McDonald’s is still in operations right here in the southland. Located in the city of Downey, at the corner of Lakewood and Firestone, sits the 3rd McDonald’s Restaurant ever built. It is in an old-school style business with walk-up and order windows and large golden arches outlining the physical structure. And most important a 64-foot neon sign of the Speedee Hamburger rises above the surrounding parking lot. The store opened on August 8, 1953 and was the third store built by the McDonald’s brothers, Richard and Maurice. Today, there are over 25,000 stores world-wide, with billions of hamburgers served, and astonishingly enough 1 of 8 people today have eaten at a McDonald’s. The first McDonald logo was the Speedee character, which lasted until 1961. Speedee was designed by Richard and Maurice McDonald and stood for Speedee Service System and was introduced at the San Bernardino store in 1948. The 2nd logo was Archie McDonald but it only lasted a short while as it was deemed too gaudy. The golden arches logo appeared in 1968 and the slashed ‘M’ logo followed. Ronald McDonald was introduced in 1963. The hamburger stand was first colored blue and white and opened with 15 cent burgers. The initial menu included its famous hamburger, fries, malts, ice cream, soft drinks and coffee. Richard and Maurice McDonald first got started in the fast food business with a hot dog stand in Des Plaines, Illinois, which became McDonald’s #1.

Seeking more success they moved to San Bernardino to open another store, a hotdog drive-in, which would shortly close due to a lack of business. But the McDonald Brothers were undeterred and started another business, a hamburger stand McDonald’s #2, and soon the focus of the business would shift to speed and efficiency.

Reducing their menu from 25 to 9 items and removing the car-hops while allowing only walk-up services, the McDonald business grew.

The brothers perfected fast production and low cost hamburgers at a time when other hamburger businesses

La Primaria’s Folklorico Dance Troupe Performed at the Holiday House

On December 7th, 2013 a talented group of children from La Primaria Elementary performed at the The Holiday House event at the El Monte Community Center on Tyler. La Primaria’s Folklorico Dance Troupe performed the traditional Ballet Folklorico under the instruction of Dance Instructor Connie Navarro.

Mrs. Navarro instructs the children in Ballet Folklorico which combines elements of Mexican culture, history, folklore, and religion with rhythm and body movement.

The children who performed from La Primaria Elementary ranged from grades 1 through 5 and meet each Thursday to practice.

The boys normally wear black slacks; a black, wide brimmed hat (sombrero); and a red belt and tie.

Women traditionally wear full, colorful skirts with either black or white boots.

The costumes hint at the heritage of the region.

The girls danced with warm smiles on her their faces while twirling their multicolored skirts round and round while the boys were clicking

their boots on the hardwood floor and dancing circles around the senoritas. This is a unique example of ballet folklorico.

Mrs. Navarro has been teaching Ballet Folklorico for 4 years at La Primaria.

She is married and has 3 kids who all dance. As they say a family that dances together stays together. Mrs. Navarro and her husband met while dancing and have been dancing strong for over 20 years together.

If You Ever Saw... ...a fellow by the name of Brad Muster play for Stanford in the 1980’s and later with the Chicago Bears and New Orleans Saints, then you know who freshman USC fullback Ty Isaac’s looks like on the field.

Prep Football St. John Bosco in Bellflower is not in our coverage zone but they are the number one ranked team in California and the number three ranked team in the nation. On Saturday night they defeated longtime California powerhouse Concord De La Salle, 20-14, in the state title game.

De La Salle had won the four previous state titles.

Girls Basketball Note After starting the season 5-1 the Temple City Lady Rams have lost five straight, including losses to Arroyo,

Arcadia, and El Monte.

The setback to Arroyo was Temple City’s second to Arroyo in December. Giliene So and Gabriella Chan lead the Lady Rams in scoring.

After leading the Baldwin Park Braves football team to the CIF playoffs in 2013 head coach Chris Williams has stepped down citing lack of support from the school’s administration.

The Braves finished the season with a 7-4 record, losing in the first round of the Mid-Valley Division playoffs, 56-53, at Arroyo.

In 2012, Williams first season, injuries and setbacks caused the team to go 0-10.

The claim of lack of support is not new at Baldwin Park as former head coach James Heggins shared the same with the Mid Valley News when he stepped down at the conclusion of the 2011 season.

With Williams operating

the offense Baldwin Park was the seventh highest scoring team in the division with 398 points and fifth in total yardage with 4.878 yards this fall. Quarterback Michael Moran accounted for 41 touchdowns, 34 passing, and seven running.

Williams intends finish his schooling and get back into coaching down the road.

South El Monte Names Saavedra

Roy Saavedra is in as South El Monte’s new varsity baseball coach. He’ll be taking over for Dave Sheiner who resigned back in September.

Saavedra has coached competitive traveling baseball for years for his son Aaron Saavedra who is a South El Monte alum and

All-Mission Valley league defensive back and second baseman.

South loses players like Saavedra, Mario Lopez, Pablo Ocegudea and Romen Aguinaga, but do have a nice bunch coming back with LHP-Mariah Quintana, INF-Fernando Calderon and

OF-David Mora.

Saavedra and staff will try to turn around a team that went 7-8 in league last year and 10-12 overall. Eagles haven’t made the playoffs since the 2012 season and hasn’t won a MVL title since being co-champs with Mtn. View in 2006.

Now that’s the way to finish off a season. USC showed up, put Fresno State early and coasted to a 45-21 win in the Las Vegas Bowl.

That was a far cry from last year’s Sun Bowl disaster.

Considering the Trojans played for three coaches, and met four, a 10 win season and a bowl victory over a team that went 11-2 certainly isn’t bad.

New Coach Steve Sarkisian was also apparently impressed as he extended an offer to interim HC Clay Helton to join his staff and is reportedly reaching out to former interim HC Ed Orgeron to return.

What does a Bowl win mean for recruiting? Greg Biggins of Scout.com tweeted that Serra quarterback Jalen Greene committed to USC on the drive home from the Vegas Bowl.

Despite multiple injuries and just four touchdown catches (two in the Vegas Bowl) I think we’ve seen the last of Marqise Lee. Safety Dion Bailey looks like a goner too.

Speaking of goners, now that Cordell Broadus has caught the first train out of Diamond Bar doesn’t it seem like Antonio “Noodles” Hull is next one out the door?

I’ve heard the rumors about Dale Ziola showing interest in the Cal job but nothing is confirmed as of yet. My first question is why? The two programs seem to be going in opposite directions. While the Conquerors were a win away from the semi finals, Cal missed the playoffs all together. And with Jim Arnold, who always had the Condors in the hunt, stepping down, it could take a few years for Cal to bounce back.

Did you know that among other players, Los Altos has “Touchdown” Tevita Sina.

Lorenzo Silva, Matt Hayashi, David Tomalchoff and Daniel Valdez returning?

That alone is a nice nucleus to build around. One would think Ziola would want to take that next step.

With James Heggins stepping down two years ago and Chris Williams resigning this year after leading Baldwin Park to a playoff berth, and both citing non support from the administration, you have to wonder what’s wrong with the administration? Baldwin Park went from 0-10 last year to a seven win season this year and then fell by three points to Arroyo in the first round of CIF. What else did the suits want from Williams? I don’t think Jon Gruden is ready to take the job. Or as South El Monte

Coach Ibis Aguilar said last week, unless Mack Brown is coming in I’m still the coach at SEM. Gruden might have other opportunities though soon that might be more to his liking. With the way the Detroit Lions self destructed down the stretch, you have figure Jim Schwartz is as good as gone. This seems like this an annual occurrence for the Lions. Mike Shanahan should be receiving his walking papers soon as well with the Redskins going down in flames and Rex Ryan might be ousted on Broadway.

Gruden seems like a fit for any of these positions. Unless of course he decides to take the BP job.

Every Fan Down in M-Town Liked Football a lot…

But the Blogger, who lived just north of M-Town, most certainly did not!

The Blogger hated Football!

The whole Football season!

Now, please don’t ask why.

No one quite knows the reason.

It could be his team didn’t beat St. Francis just right.

It could be, perhaps, his defense took San Marino too light.

But I think that the most likely reason of all, May have been his internet connection was two sizes too small. *** Staring down from his cave with a sour, Blogger frown, at the warm lighted windows below in M-Town.

For he knew every Wildcat down in M-Town beneath, was seeking to hang a third championship wreath.

“And they’re buying their tickets!” He snarled with a sneer.

“Tonight is the title game.

It’s practically here!” *** Then he plowed on his keyboard, Blogger fingers nervously drumming, “I MUST find some way to stop this title from coming!”

For tomorrow Coach Maddox would have Paraclete singing the blues, M-Towners would wake early to read the Mid Valley News!

They would read how the Wildcats, young and bold, would feast and feast.

They would feast on the Clete’s Tyler Carvalho, and the Antoyne Hutcherson rushing beast.

The thought of…The Blogger couldn’t stand in the least! *** And THEN they’d do something the Blogger liked least of all!

Every Wildcat down in MTown, the tall and the small, would stand close together, and sing the alma mater for all.

And the more the Blogger thought of seeing another Wildcat title ring, the more the Blogger thought, “I must stop this whole thing!”

“Why, since 1935 I’ve prevented it nine times before now!”

“I must stop this title from coming! But how?” *** Then he got an idea! An awful idea!

The Blogger got a wonderful, awful idea!

“I know just what to do!”

The Blogger laughed in his throat. “I’ll write a few words and sink this green boat.” *** “I’ll speak ill of Mike Minter, call Ryan Maddox a lout, come down on Brett Walsh, and negative about GeVontray Ainsworth I’ll spout.”

Then with a nasty smile and a maniacal grin…

“Tales of Mason Bryant being too small I’ll spin.”

Then to the web his grubby fingers flew to the Star, the Trib, and the Mid Valley too!

He loaded some garbage about the defense not getting enough sacks.

He slammed them all with vicious attacks, from one site to the next before making quick tracks. *** The Blogger was jealous, he hated them all.

His anger and his venom through his keyboard he thrust.

He slithered and slunk, as he prayed for the Refs, with a smile most unpleasant, hoping they’d deliver the Cats yellow clothed presents. *** The anthem was sang, the kick off had come, the runner got banged, the Blogger stayed mum.

But the fans they cheered as the players went up and down.

The Refs they jeered with every sad frown.

The Blogger delighted when Blake Heyworth would slip, he howled with excitement when Chris Campbell’s shoulder would dip.

Tackles! Backles! Smashes and trips!

Bruises! And hackles! And all kinds of fat lips! *** In the fourth quarter, with no score, there was a pick by Craft.

They gave it to Ainsworth… and SUDDENLY he was gone like a draft!

Through a hole opened no bigger than an inch, GeVontray burst through, making it look like a cinch.

The Blogger’s hopes unraveled and down went his head, when Ainsworth crossed paydirt, his dreams were dead. *** Eruption came from the Wildcats along with hysteria.

Potts, Bryant, and George Frazier they danced.

The song girls tumbled and twirled in a strange, but happy prance.

Thorn, Haney, and David Gallegos embraced by lot.

The cheerleaders circled in a

victory trot.

But did the Blogger like this?

He most certainly did not. *** His web frothing and bad mouthing had not turned the trick.

A new feeling formed inside and he felt kind of sick.

He stared at the faithful of M-Town with a pain not so much the same…

What he had prevented so many times before for a third time had came.

And the Blogger, his feet freezing in the cold, stood puzzling and puzzling: “How will this story be told?” *** “It came without anger! It came without fears!”

“It came without bitterness, envy, or tears!”

And he puzzled three hours, till his puzzler was sore.

Then the Blogger thought of something he hadn’t before! *** “Maybe Football,” he thought. “Doesn’t live on the web.”

“Maybe Football…perhaps…should just be enjoyed instead.”

And what happened then?

Well…in M-Town they say, the Blogger raced home and gave the Wildcats praise that day.
