Kranz and Madrid Schools Participate in Annual Homewalk

At dawn, a light rail vehicle from Metro’s fleet entered into the Foothill Gold Line project jurisdiction for the first time. The vehicle, a $4 million AnsaldoBreda P2250 weighing over 100,000 pounds, was outfitted with specialized gear to test clearances, wheel/ rail interface, rail switches, and the Overhead Catenary System. The testing will take place over the next two weeks between Arcadia and Irwindale and include live wire testing between California Ave in Monrovia and the San Gabriel River Bridge in Irwindale, where power is now energized.

by Mavis Hansen Happy Holidays! “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year” and also the busiest for most of us. Time for all that Christmas shopping, planning and attending all kinds of events. Those lists just seem to keep growing.

So very many dedicated clubs, groups and organizations whose volunteers work diligently year round providing donations and funding of various needed items for those in need and unable to provide for themselves, from infants to the very elderly, including our veterans, are now asking for your help this holiday season. Yes, there is always a need for cash donations, but many volunteers spend countless hours sewing, making items to be sold or planning fundraisers in order to provide something extra during this season when we remember, “It is better to give then to receive.”

The Women’s Club of El Monte, whose club lounge is located within the El Monte Community Center, 3130 N. Tyler Avenue, El Monte will host a boutique with a very large variety of items for sale. Proceeds from this annual fundraiser are budgeted for the many philanthropies, donations and scholarships provided to the community. The Annual Christmas Program will be held on Tuesday, December 9, 2014 instead of the regular 4th Tuesday of the month due to the Christmas tradition of the El Monte High School Choir and music students presenting a Christmas Musical. After a short business meeting, conducted by President Rita Cazares, there will be a special Christmas Luncheon. Luncheon hostess are Jane Myring and Millie Rawle. Social and Hospitality Chairman is Eleanor Garcia.

With so many events during the holiday season, it is sometimes difficult to decide where you want to go or whom you should help support. MERCI’s 25th Annual Trees of Enchantment Brunch was held on Sunday, December 7.

MERCI began in 1955 when a group of parents of children with developmental disabilities from the San Gabriel Valley and East Los Angeles formed a school because at that time there were no educational options for their children. Over the years MERCI has moved into supporting adults with day programs and adults in

residential homes. MERCI presently serves 125 adults with developmental disabilities from all over the San Gabriel Valley in five programs and two residential homes. This 25th Annual Trees of Enchantment Brunch honored three unsung heroes to MERCI: A.J. Glassman, Daniel Pedroza and Nathan DeFilippo who have all donated their time and effort to MERCI. The MERCI Jingles, a group of twelve clients, performed Christmas Songs.

Oct. 25, 2014 was the 24th Annual Make A Difference Day; USA Weekend and NBC joined together, so they say.

Nation’s largest day of a community service event; Across USA, it’s the millions of volunteers’s full intent.

To work hard to improve the lives of others; It’s great when helping our sisters and brothers.

They want to inspire the nation just one day each year; Celebrated the 4th Saturday of October, let’s cheer.

I know there’s many people who do this day in and out; Thinking and helping others is what their life is about.

I am blest to be a volunteer for the mid Valley News; Write true stories that rhyme and not sing the blues.

I do enjoy meeting the folks along the way each week; I get a lot more out of it than anyone would think.

I know that you also can make a difference too; If you choose something that you really like to do.

I’m proud of my friend Bill and his wife, how they feel; Ever since they started delivering Meals On Wheels.

I think it’s so much better to give without greed; If you’re a people person then this is what you need.

‘Time Jockey’ Unbroken

Remarkable…. The movie Unbroken, directed

by Angela Jolie, is scheduled to be released on Christmas Day. It is based on the book written by Laura Hillenbrand which has sold over 4 million copies since it was released in 2010. The best seller has become so popular that it has been translated into 29 languages and has sold all over the world. Unbroken is the life story of Louis Zamperini as told from his perspective of a youth through early adulthood. His story is an incredible one based on determination, courage, strength and faith. The book records the challenges in his life starting with his delinquent days as a youth, a champion and Olympic athlete, a World War II veteran, prisoner of war and motivational speaker. Zamperini’s story is fascinating and I’m sure the movie will more than adequately bring it to the big screen in a manner which will make the story even more incredible. I don’t know what’s in the movie but there are many story lines in the book that may not make the final movie version. Here are some interesting notes from the book which I found to be worthy of sharing with you. Louie was a mischievous youth and was on his way to becoming a juvenile delinquent.

His older brother Pete tried to encourage him to take advantage of his Godgiven talent of running and encouraged him to put a greater effort into his skills.

But Louie didn’t like to run or train, and after a spat with his parents he decided to runaway from home. He was only 15 but his parents let him leave to find himself. Taking a friend with him, Louie hopped a train and headed east towards an unknown destination.

They snuck into a boxcar and even though it was hot and the ride uncomfortable, it was better than walking.

Unfortunately, the railroad police caught them and sent them on their way. Louie reconsidered his going back to his home, returned and asked for forgiveness. The following summer, he dedicated himself to running, even staying in a cabin on the Cahuilla Indian Reservation in Southern California’s high desert. Each morning he got up and ran, ran in the afternoon,

ran chasing horses and ran back in evening. By the end of the summer, he returned home in the best shape of his life, was now hooked on running and saw a future with his running skills. In time he would go on and become a track champion in high school, at USC and in the Olympics. Later in life, Zamperini was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Army Air Force (AAF) during the war and was trained as a bombardier. He was assigned to a crew on a B-24, a craft which was hampered with mechanical problems.

Its fragile wings were known to snap off in flight while an outage of one of the four engines would cause the plane to spiral to the ground. The high crash rate of the huge bombers earned the plane the ominous name “The Flying Coffin.” In World War II, there were 52, 173 AAF crew members killed in combat. Each airman was required to complete 40 combat missions in order to fulfill their tour of duty, but due to the high rate of mechanical problems and enemy encounters, only 50% of AAF men survived the war. Unbroken is filled with numerous stories which represent the severity of the war, and the story of Louis Zamperini is a testament to all the obstacles he overcame to become a hero in life……

The Kiwanis Club of Temple City recognized two outstanding students from Cloverly Elementary School.

Accompanying the students was long-time TCUSD teacher Ms. Krista Carlson.

Isabel is 11 years old and in Mrs. Stokes’s class. She has a younger sister and enjoys drawing and designing.

Isabel said, “The best things about Cloverly are the great, nice teachers, the big library, and the big grassy field.”

The best thing that ever happened was being chosen a Student of the Month. If she could change one thing, it would be to have reusable trays in the lunch area. If she could build one thing it would be a tall tower. Each level is a classroom that educates students. Personal goals are to become an author, an artist, and play the violin better.

Ysabella is 11 years old and in Ms. Carlson’s class.

She enjoys soccer, dancing, singing, riding ATV’s, cooking drawing, Spirit Rallies, gymnastics, swimming, painting nails, and doing hairstyles on people. Ysabella said, “The best things about Cloverly are the Spirit Days, field trips, the teachers are nice, and the various clubs such as KCKeepers, Student Council, Chess Club, and Chorus.” The best things that ever happened was getting her dog in 2008, her baby cousin in 2012, getting her iPod Touch in 2013, and the CIMI trip. If he could change one thing it would be to have no bullies and bad people. Personal goals are to build a robot to help people, get good grades, go to a good college, make as many friends as possible, and she wants to make sure she does not get

referrals and to turn in her homework on time. (I think referrals are not good) Each week the Temple City Kiwanis Club is pleased to recognize outstanding students and their teachers from Cloverly, Emperor, Longden, Oak Avenue, and the Dr. Doug Sears Learning Center. Kiwanis treats students and their teacher to lunch. Students receive a certificate, a letter for their parents, a bumper sticker, a gift certificate from The Hat Restaurant, and a photograph of them receiving their award. Their photo will also be published in Mid Valley News, and

posted in the lobby at the Temple City Unified School District Office and on their website.

Temple City Kiwanis has been serving our community since 1939. Members are dedicated men and women who desire to make a difference in the quality of life for the youth of Temple City. El Monte-Rosemead Adult School Holds Meet and Greet

The El Monte-Rosemead Adult School celebrated the fall semester with a Hawaiian themed week full of activities to encourage students to become familiar with the school and their fellow students.

“On Tuesday, the children from our Granada Center LAUP classes performed a variety of songs in colorful Hawaiian costumes in the main lobby of the school,” said Assistant Principal Sara Shapiro. “On Wednesday, our musical performers included students from Mr. Miyahara’s class in the morning, with Ms. Hinojosa and Ms. Nguyen’s students performing in the evening.”

Teachers and students also

demonstrated various Hawaiian dance steps to those in attendance.

“We held a limbo contest, a pineapple throw, singa-longs, hula dancing and gave awards for the best costumes,” said Shapiro.

Adding to the festivities were colorful attire, an international greeting board and Hawaiian trivia activities.

The week’s activities concluded with the arrival of a tropical island food truck serving a variety of foods.

“Everyone seemed to enjoy the week with the Hawaiian spirit being felt by the hundreds of students and staff who participated,” added Shapiro.

The annual event is a community celebration sure to get you in the holiday spirit. Proceeds from the Menudo Breakfast benefit the student body funds, and over the years it has been a great success for the District, drawing crowds of about 1000 people.

Several prizes including bicycles, toys, gift cards, food and holiday items will be raffled off to those in attendance.

Big Bear Resorts 11th Annual “Hot Dawgs and Hand Rails” Competition

Big Bear Resorts kicked off the ski season early with their annual Hot Dawgs and Hand Rails competition this past September. Mid Valley News was able to attend an awesome, spectacular competition which displayed high flying tricks at the “Hot Dawgs and Handrails” snow ski and snow boarding competition this summer. Yes, we said summer.

Big Bear trucked in ice and created their own snow.

The temperature was just right for the several tons man-made snow being made onto the two custom snow stages, created just for this competition, in late September 2014. Crews worked hard at making sure that the stages were set just right with jumps, rails and ramps for the competitors to show off their skills, to dazzle the spectators.

Before the competition kicked off, spectators could

cruze around all the booths from several vendors showing off the latest snow ski and boarding gear. There was plenty of food and drink to tickle your taste buds.

Some of the food included was of course the hot dawgs, burgers, fries, coffee and snow cones.

Now that the ski season has officially kicked, it’s time to head up to the local mountains and enjoy the fresh powder that has just

In the San Fernando Valley, Metro will introduce a new express service between the Valley and the Westside, which is complimented by the modification of three Metro Rapid and two Local Valley lines. A group of young ladies from Madrid Middle School with an interest in engineering attended the 5th Annual Invent It. Build It. Workshop, a hands-on engineering experience for middle school girls. Held at the Los Angeles Convention Center, Invent It. Build It. is a collaborative event of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE), Girl Scouts, and Design Squad and is made possible by a grant from the Exxon Mobil Foundation.

Madrid’s 11 scholars were accompanied at the workshop by their math teacher, Christina Urmanski and instructional assistant, Blanca Gutierrez.

Invent It. Build It. takes place annually at the SWE Conference, and this year’s theme was A Global Exchange for Change.

Madrid’s students had the opportunity to experience the creative and innovative sides of engineering through hands-on projects, working alongside women engineers from around the world.

“It was a great field trip that exposed the young women to engineering, science, and applying mathematics,” said Urmanski. “It was entertaining and educational for the girls as they did experiments and worked in small groups to create miniature robots.”

According to Karen Horting, SWE executive director and CEO, Invent It. Build It. is an important, fun-filled event for young girls, educators and parents.

“Invent It. Build It. offers young girls the opportunity to engage in activities that explore areas of the engineering world they’ll find truly compelling,” said Horting. “It also provides a

creativity while applying their knowledge of math and science. They had a lot of fun but they also learned and gained confidence in their skills,” said Urmanski.

Last Friday Crescenta Valley defeated Downey 21-14 to win its first CIF title since 1973. On the same night up in Lancaster, Pomona won it’s first CIF title since 1951 with a 37-29 victory over Paraclete.

The losing team to CV in 1973 was Monrovia. The losing team in 1951 was Monrovia. Both games were played on December 14th.

Galaxy Wins MLS CUP!

Robbie Keane scored on a breakaway in the 111th minute and the LA Galaxy went to beat New England 2-1 Sunday to win the MLS

Cup in two extra times.

Keane got a pass on the run from Marcelo Sarvas in the sixth minute of the second extra time and drilled it by

the goaltender to give the Galaxy the lead. The Galaxy then held off the Revolution over the next nine minutes to start the celebration.

I don't know if Connor Van Ginkel's catch was a touchdown or not, (it appeared his left foot was out) but I do know this. What a great catch! Who makes catches like that? Who does this guy think he is? Odell Beckham Jr.?

He's been doing it all year as Brian Gadsby's favorite target but that was off the charts. If you get a chance check out the video we posted on our site. Don't focus on whether he was out of the endzone or not, just look at the beauty of the play. Unbelievable! Please tell me this guy is getting some looks.

As for Downey's Stacy Chukwumezie (did I spell that right?) it looked like a catch on the You Tube video. From my vantage point on the CV sideline I couldn't tell at the time, but I saw the official was right on top of it and figured he got it right. But upon further review...it looked like a catch.

Now now here's the thing. A referee missed a call. Welcome to high school football. I'm trying to remember a high school football game when a referee didn't miss a call.

It happens every week. It might have been a bad call but it was probably one of at least ten bad calls on both sides throughout the night.

Van Ginkel's catch? Bottom line is bad calls cannot be used as excuses. Downey is a good football team but Crescenta Valley won 21-14. The Falcons are the Southeast champs. So let's accept it and move on.

Oh and the next guy that says that Jack Williams is a bad coach needs to sign up for a class called Football 101. Save those comments for another site. Oh and Chukwumezie is a great receiver.

What Dale Ziola has done at Los Altos is nothing short of remarkable. Did you know that as recently as 2010, Los Altos was 0-10? In three years Ziola led the Conquerors in the CIF Finals. “I hope that this is a launching pad,” Ziola said Saturday night after his team lost to Colony. If Ziola stays Los Altos could be a power for years to come.

Colony is legit...

Who is the most disappointed coach in the area right now? Is it Williams?

Is it Norm Dahlia? Ziola?

Maybe La Mirada's Mike Moschetti after getting knocked out early? No it has to be Aaron Jamieson who had read about his team,

I would prefer an eight team college football playoff but four is better than nothing. And for once I think they got it right. No way Alabama or Oregon drop out after big wins, and you can't shut out an undefeated team (Florida St.) out of the top four. So that leaves Ohio State and the Buckeyes beat a good Wisconsin team 59-0. TCU and Baylor will be upset but somebody always is. Again let's just accept it and move on.

LA was up 1-0 late in the second half and appeared to be on its way to a shutout when Chris Tierney scored the tying goal in the 79th minute forcing extra time. The first extra time was scoreless before Keane finally won it in the second.

Keane missed a couple of opportunities earlier in the game before getting the game winner. “I don’t worry about missed chances. I knew I’d get another one,” Keane said. “In the end we played the best through 120 minutes. Thankfully we got the goal. New England is a good team. They battled us all day.”

The first half was scoreless and neither team had many chances to score. The Galaxy had five attempts on goal compared to two for New England. The Revolution had possession 57 percent of the time to just 43 for LA. Each team had one shot on target.

Gyasi Zardis finally broke through as he scored in the 52nd minute for a 1-0 Galaxy lead. LA had a couple of opportunities to get a second goal but couldn’t get it to go. Donovan had a free kick after a penalty but it sailed high. Keane had a shot in front of the net but it didn’t have enough on it and he was stopped.

“We weren’t that good today for whatever reason.

We shouldn’t have allowed that goal. But I give New England a lot of credit,” said Galaxy Coach Bruce Arena.

“It is a bit of a dynasty at this point with three championships in four years. That’s not easy to do,” Arena said.

Keane was named MVP of the game to go along with the MVP he already earned for the 2014 season.

St. Vincent

“St. Vincent” is one of the best Indie movies of the year. A comedy drama that brings to life the old cliché, “don’t judge a book by its cover.” Vincent, a retired old man, was befriended by a young boy, going through the growing pains of adolescents, while starting a new life in a new school and a new home. Together

Vincent and Oliver realize that friendship can be found in the strangest places you would never expect. No matter the age or the inexperience someone has, we can all benefit from one another.

“St. Vincent” brings together two people in two different stages of there lives to help on another.

Keeping true to its Indie

photos by Devette Johnson roots, first time director and writer Theodore Melfi decided to make his own Indie film, with a small twist. Using A list celebrities for his main cast, Melfi was able to better develop his characters and story.

Bill Murray, who plays Vincent, is best known for his role in “Ghostbusters,” “Caddyshack,” “Groundhog Day,” and for his voice in “Garfield.” Melissa McCarthy, who has had a booming career in recent films such as “Bridesmaid,” “Identity Theft,” and most recently “Tammy,” plays Maggie, a recently divorcee struggling to make ends meet and raise a young boy going through struggle of adolescents.

Naomi Watts best known for “King Kong,” plays Daka a pregnant Russian stripper and Missus better known as the lady of the night. Jaeden Lieberher, new to the silver screen, plays Oliver, son of Maggie and friends with Vincent.

I really enjoyed this film. It brought to life the struggles of many people in different stages of their lives, but concentrated on the relationship between Vincent and Oliver. Their relationship developed from hate to respectfulness and then mutual appreciation.

The story is not a unique idea, but it’s portrayed in a way that has never been done before. It was clear, concise, and to the point. I give the writing a 10. What better way to portray Vincent than with Bill Murray. I liked Bill Murray’s carefree representation of Vincent and his approach on Oliver.

Every single actor did their

part to bring each and every character of the movie to life, I also give acting a 10.

Melfi’s touch in direction was just as good as any A list director. No scene was too long and no dialogue was too short. I give direction a 9 because Melfi can always improve since he is new to the game. As an Indie film, St. Vincent’s production team did not spend a lot time or money on sound or its look and feel. For example, there was

race track scene that could have utilized more sound of the horses and ambience, that’s why I give sound, look and feel average score of 5.

Overall, this movie took you on a roller-coaster of emotions, that made you happy, sad, angry, and it even had a moral to the story; which was no matter how rough or mean a person can be if you take the time to know them, you’ll discover they are a saint. Grade: B
